Even if you don't use it, it can always be a nice conversion piece, or paint job. And there may be a use for him that you decide upon in the future. Maybe you can just run him for a few games, and see how he plays?

1!ZZ
looks like a pretty decent list.

I have an Ethereal kickin around and was just kinda wondering how people generaly use ethereals in thier armies, preferably mobile armies. I got the model just to have and paint, something to look pretty but I want a reason to field him so yeah, any suggestions?

Thanks

To put it bluntly, the new Ethereal rules suck. If you're going to use him, for the Greater Good, take an honor guard. It's the only good thing about him. Take an Honor Guard of 11 Fire Warriors, and mount them in a Devilfish. Yes, if you drop them real close to the enemy then you can be in big trouble, but the honor guard is BS4. Huge advantage when rapid-firing and/or when boosted by a single markerlight.

the problem is when in devilfish, Ethereal cant influence battlefield
and the second he steps out, everyone and their dog targets him!

If all your troops are mounted, then he's not influencing them either. Most cases he's not influencing the battlefield much anyway. And this way, he can actually provide some utility by giving you a unit of BS4 Fire Warriors. Besides, 1!ZZ specifically asked about mobile strategies, and this is the only way to include an Ethereal in a mobile army, because otherwise he becomes the only footslogger.

I actualy just tried him out last night and he worked out fairly well. He didnt die until the last turn and I was able to manipulate the battlefield with him and his honour guard quite well biggrin

That's VERY lucky in my opinion.

lol you have no idea. I thought I was gonna get massacred first turnn because I was playing against a deathwing army that teleported around my army. I was actualy lucky enough to take minimal casualties and clear out half of his army.

Let me re-phrase...
UBER LUCKY

actualy really in hindsite it wasn't anything spectacular, all my rolls were pretty much average. I would hit 6 times with 12 Bs 3 shots stuff like that, like consistently. So my situation obviousely wasnt too dire. It just came down to how I manouvered.

I guess i'm just very unlucky.
Actually, that is true...
Every time I use a railhead solid shot, I always roll a 1, not a 2, a freaking 1! WHY GOD, WHY?! crying
I'm not even kidding, I always roll a 1. I don't remember a time where I didn't with that stupid cannon. I actually gave up trying and moved to killing multiple units and hoping that another heavy weapon doesn't kill me first. sweatdrop

I feel your pain. Whenever I need to hit with my railhead's submunition, I roll a one or two and miss horribly. It always happens whenever I could splatter 8+ models with one shot, or when it's crucial that I hit. Azimaith can attest; he plays alot of horde armies and he almost counts on me missing my submunition shots.

Oryn needs to get his railhead gunner off the sauce is why. I don't "almost" count on it missing, I actually *count* on it missing. I think in its time against me its hit around 3 times I can remember. The more crucial the shot the worse it rolls. In fact that seems to happen alot. Reminds me of a story with a single live destroyer with 3 of his downed buddies, 3 crisis suits with fusion guns and 3 hits, and a 3 rolls of 1 to wound.
