Dari was not surprised any more by Maia's sudden appearances, but the way she conducted herself this time was some cause for alarm. His hairless brow raised.
"What? Who?" It was the only logical reaction he could muster at the moment.

"Some woman, he's over flirting with her at her desk," Maia frowned at him, seeming to realize Dari was just as surprised by this turn of events as she was. She moved to hug him. "I don't know. Maybe they're close friends or something."
Very close friends.

Dari was a bit too surprised at first to return the hug but did in a moment, patting Maia's back in what he hoped was a comforting way.
"Who was it? Where?"

"I don't know," Maia frowned in thought. "She had dark hair, and was wearing make up." She hadn't paused long enough to assess the situation, or to put a name to the face.

Dark hair and makeup. Okay. That was a good sixty percent of female employees here at HQ. He'd bet he had a good idea who Maia was talking about, though.
"Was it Kelly? The one receptionist out front with very short hair?"

"Yes," Maia frowned again. Her anger was ebbing away though; Dari would have told her if Toby liked someone else. At least, if he'd known about it.
"What are you working on now? Something exciting?"

"Yes, they have an interesting relationship," Dari admitted, and then offered Maia a smile. "You know I can't tell you. We're really not even supposed to let you in here."

"I know," Maia said. "I'm still curious." She leaned back in her chair. "When do you think I can tell him?" she asked. "Its been months." She didn't want to ruin what they had, but she also wanted to let Toby know how she felt.

"I'm not sure," Dari said, giving up on the task at hand to turn toward Maia. "Honestly I'd expected him to make a move by now. He has, in little bits. Maybe it's almost time to tell him after all."

Dari Had expected him to make a move? He had made moves? "He seems happier now," she mused. "I don't want to ruin everything by telling him. I'll think about how to do it. Might give him a Gaelic lesson. I promised him one ages ago."

"He will probably panic. Probably, not definitely," Dari said with a nod, "Be careful with those lessons, though. Toby doesn't like to be tricked."

Probably panic wasn't much better than definitely panicking. "I'll be careful," She promised. "Some common phrases, that's all." But how would she tell him she loved him? She'd have to expect a freak out.
"How do I tell him?" she asked.

Dari sat in silence a while, mulling it over. How should she tell him? What would make for the least backlash?
"I'd say don't use the 'l' word. Not yet. Say you want to talk about feelings for him or something."

Maia hadn't thought about that. Dari was probably right, saying outright that she loved him would probably cause panic. "I could do that. Maybe he'll panic less." She looked to Dari. "Do you think I could say I have feelings for him without his freaking out?"

Dari's lips pursed slightly but his unblinking eyes went nowhere. It was his thinking face, and anyone who knew him well enough knew what it looked like. Everyone else was pretty freaked out by his apparent lack of emotion and expression.
"No. Not entirely. It's been a very long time since Toby has acknowledged anyone's feelings for him, and you're his roommate."
