A sympathetic smile came across Lena's face. Seeing Adrian look out the window so distantly, so haunted yet handsome at the same time. She wasn't sure what spurred her to do so, but she reached out and gently held his hand. "Look at it this way," she started and glanced out the window herself, looking at his car. "Seems like a good paying job."

Adrian Darcy "We actually don't get paid for it. That car comes from my inheritance," he said, turning his hand and clasping hers. "Well, my great-grandfathers inheritance. Technically, I'm Adrian Darcy the Fourth."

"Fourth, huh?" she mused. "What were the three before you like?"

Adrian Darcy He blushed and looked down, toying with her fingers. "They...don't exist. I'm in the books as the Fourth, but I'm the First. I have to be "reborn" every generation to keep out of the public eye."

She blinked. "So... You're all the Adrians?" she tried to make sense and dipped her head to think of it further. "Does that mean you're your own grandad?" she quickly gasped with wide eyes.

Adrian Darcy Adrian laughed, spreading out her fingers. "It's like this. I was born, grew older, became a Carrier, and have lived ever since. My grandfather is long dead, and most of my first generation is dying. I'm immortal, Lena."

Lena only furrowed her eyebrows. "So... You're old enough to be your grandad?" She never knew her own grandparents. Her father was fairly old, he was a Vietnam War - Era guy.

Adrian Darcy "Unfortunately, yes," he said quietly, almost shyly. "That's why I'm ridiculed in the Rider world for not having a Companion yet. I'm too old not to."

"What exactly is a Companion, Old Man Jenkins?" Lena asked with a wry smile. "Is that a girlfriend or something?"

Adrian Darcy He smiled sadly, staring at their hands. "A Companion is a Rider's forever spouse. They will never part, and are even both granted with special powers and immortality. Even death can't keep them from each other."

"I'll do it." she said without hesitation; not even apprehension showed on her face, just an eager and confident smile.

Adrian Darcy Adrian looked up in shock, his eyes wide. "What? You...you want to be my Companion?"

"Sure, why not?" Lena beamed as if being asked a childish question. "Besides, I think we'd have a problem if another girl went around being your Companion. It would make these dates awkward, don'tcha think?"

Adrian Darcy "B-but Companions are like...glorified married couples!" he replied, still astounded. "And once were Bound, we can't break up. There's no divorcing Companions! You have to be completely sure about this, Lena. It's not something you can just...leave..."

Lena flicked a packet of sugar at him to gain his attention, though she did find him adorable all flustered. "I'm sure." she said confidently with a reassuring tone. "I've only met you for, what, a day? And already you've done so much more than any guy I've ever met." She curled her fingers around his hand, smiling gently. "Don't act like you don't share these feelings." she nearly scolded.
