Working in a restaurant I can state that a lot of back of the house people do indeed wear Crocs- but not the kind with the holes. Generally black, no hole, clogs or whateverthehell. They're non-slip, light, and supposedly you can stand for long periods of time in them and your feet don't hurt. I figure it's true with so many of people wearing them. A lot of big chain restaurants have all their employees order uniformed shoes from
Shoes for Crews due to the fact that if every single employee has them and one of them slips wearing a pair of their shoes they will cover the insurance/hospital/pay/whatever for the injured individual. They sell Crocs (even ones with holes) on their site. I do not believe the shoe is any more melt able then a normal shoe, although it certainly looks like a ridiculous choice in a kitchen at glance. On the other hand, if you're not working in a 4 or 5 star restaurant more then likely the kitchen runs on a kind of assembly line and most workers don't move much beyond turning around to face the stove then turning around again to set up food to be placed in the window. Line cooks are far from being not active, but they don't really move around a lot and even though they've got knifes and hot water accidents barely happen - especially in relation to feet. Hands and eyes however...
Desensitized by work a lot of our staff walk to work and home in them; but never around town. Here Crocs = Tourists. If you're Kama'aina, being assumed to be a tourist is not a barrel of fun. It's a pride... Thingy. I can't even pinpoint the reasoning (in ten words or less); but no one wants it.
