Meru Lee Hello again all! Meru here once more..
Anyways, thanks to those who had helped me with my last question earlier, I still have yet to get a new mouthpeice, but my birthday comes up with promises to get to the store.
I come to you today with a different problem and question though. Reed warping! Okay, I dry and clean my reeds off fully before I put them into their cases and I do my best to take care of them, but the thin edge of my reeds always warp- sometimes even after only a few days of playing. My school sells med-hard La Viz reeds, which I think are decent and since my parents can't get me to a store alot anyways I end up having to get them. But my question is, is it the reed type I got that makes it warp? Should I change to a different style, and if so what type?(something that is around a 3 1/2 and can produce a good tone if what I'm looking for) Or is there a way to fix this problem? oaky so I didn't, I thought I did...i remember reading the post :/ hm.
well, the one thing that affects the reed is the temperature, or if you leave your instrument unattended the water/saliva/water created from the air blown into instrument...well if you have a wooden clarinet, it will expand or warp, same goes for the reed.
if you play outside and its humid or extremely hot or cold it can affect your instrument
many musicians who wish to keep their reeds in good condition for months and even years use a special type of reed case to keep their reed in that keeps their reeds at the right temperature. vandoren makes them.
I honestly would suggest for you to try vandoren, although I must say after about half a year using their newest, the rue lepic 56 vandoren, i'm starting to realize that they have slight flaw, they are inconsistant; they suck sometimes but then like every once and while they sound beautiful...then go back to playing like crap, i really noticed it when my instructor and I started having this conversation about reeds [he gets big boxes of all kinds of reeds from friends for free !!! sfdakjkldfasj!], I'm thinking of trying their v12S, I wouldn't reccomend the 56 though, they are too expensive and again inconsistant, great, but inconsistant.
try many reeds, my teacher has been using RICO RESERVES for quite a while, atfirst I thought he was joking..but then i saw them..and let me tell you,he just got a position in the recording studio... he sounds pretty crazy...especially when he played blue shades with pacific....::sighs:: sorry I had tiramisue a while ago :];
but just goes to show, try any reed and if you feel that its the reed for you go for it

AW! Don't worry, you'll get better in no time! Did you just start out playing?
I've been playing Clarinet since 5th grade, (I'm not in my first year of college) and I LOVE it. my grade 12 band was able to play some pretty nice pieces. ^_^ I still have copies of the music I liked 'em so much! 3nodding

Kepakemapa sweatdrop I suck at playing the clarinet. You sound like one of my best friends who plays the clarinet. She swears thats she's horrible. All you have to do is work at it and strive to get better. Trying is the most important thing, just try ur hardest. How long have you been playing? That could also have somethingto do with it. I'm 3rd chair out of 7 clarinets and i've been playing since 7th grade and i'm a sophmore in high school now

Kit here~ I've been a Clarinetist for 10 years now.. Since 5th grade biggrin I own a Artley Resin 17s and a crappy! Buffet Resin..
I graduated from Lakota West High School, West Chester OH in '06. My band was in the last Tournament of Roses parade and went to Midwest Clinic last year. I was in the Marching Firebirds for 3 years (we don't march freshman, the music and marching is way hard for them x.x; ) and went to Hawai'i my senior trip, we did the Waikiki Holiday parade and played at Pearl Harbor.
Now I am a sophomore Clarinet performance major at Sinclair Community college and hopefully I should be switching over to the University of Cinci's Conservatory of Music.
If it makes you guys happy, clarinets were the biggest section in my band x3 My senior year we had 53.
Woodwinds kick brass, period. x3

Hello everyone it's me once again I'm in my sophmore year and I'm in the JV and JAZZ bad right now I'm so happy playing the clarinet. Though I've been wondering.
Have any of you had a natural handicap that made it hard to play the clarinet?
everyone knows the normal hand position but physicaly my pinkeys are literally 1/2 and inch shorter then they should be so it's almost impossible to have the right hand position and do all the fingerings. He's been really cracking down on us and he knows I have midget pinkeys but he's getting mad cause I can't keep the right hand position. I usually keep my pinkeys on the lower b key and side c key. So now I'm wondering if any of you have any helpfull tips for this cause I've been practicing with the right hand positions for awhile but I get wrong note bad quality and lots of squeeks because I can't fully cover the holes with my fingers.
Please Help T.T

my band director always says, "i'd rather be last chair in the bet band ever, than be first chair in the worst." i felt like putting that randomly...

i just started lessons again today, and my teacher told me something that improved my tone A LOT. she explained the proper embouchure i should have. i'll try to explain it. these are the steps you want to use...
1. smile 2. tighten the corners of your mouth around your mouthpiece 3. have your tongue in the position of when you say the letter "E"
i wish i had a picture, but i don't. cry i hope this'll be able to help some people. the thing i had to change was that my chin was jutting forward too much, and i wasn't gripping my mouthpiece tight enough.
