Something older than Toby! That was a first. He always seemed to think he was ancient, it was nice to find something that disproved that. Maia grinned at him, pausing when music started to play. She looked around, hoping to spot a firework.
The only warning that she'd gotten in Oregon was fireworks starting.

The song ended and the fireworks began. They were most often singular at first, then growing in intensity and patterns. Toby smiled and turned to see Maia's expression. Maybe she'd want to lay down with him? It had been so nice that first night she'd watched the stars with him after the change.

Maia was watching the fireworks, eyes wide. She reached for Toby's hand as the patterns increased. She leaned back onto her pillow, watching the fireworks. This really was better. They were closer than she'd ever been, and they were stunning.
It was a shame this was only done twice a year.

Toby let Maia take his hand. Why not? It was a special occasion. He even laid down beside her on his own pillow. He was smiling the whole time, reveling in her closeness.
Dari didn't seem like he was looking. He never did. The secret was being able to see 360 degrees at all times. He didn't smile, he didn't flinch, but he saw and was glad. Besides, the fireworks were beautiful.

"Look, that one looked like fireflies," Maia pointed as one that particularly caught her interest ended in a shower of golden sparks. They blinked a few times before fading.

Toby's smile broadened and he let his head fall to the side as he peered over at Maia. He was greatly resisting the urge to kiss her. His feelings for her had developed in their time together, he knew that much, but she was a selkie. It was so, so dangerous. He didn't want anyone to get hurt, Maia especially, so he'd just live with his secret.
He did kiss her cheek, just a quick one, and wriggled his finger in Maia's hand.

It was lucky it was dark, Maia decided, as she blushed. She looked over to Toby and smiled. "These are the best fireworks I've ever seen," she confided in him, instead of acting on desires to return the gesture. She gave his hand a squeeze.

"Mm?" Toby 'asked.' His voice was quiet and fond. Dari heard that too. "I'm glad." He nearly made some corny comment about beautiful selkies but caught himself. He wasn't sure, but joking about things like that might be upsetting for Maia. She seemed on and off that she was interested in him too.
Then came the finale, the great bursts of fire and sparks came all at once, one after the other, colors and spectacle everywhere. Toby watched it and lifted Maia's hand with his playfully.

Maia didn't want this closeness to end, nor the fireworks. In protest she stayed laid down on her pillow for a moment. "I wish it could go on forever," she said, looking up at the now firework-smoke filled sky. "Thank you for bringing me here," she added, turning to smile at Toby.

It would have been the perfect moment; a first kiss under the bright fireworks. Dari was here though. And they hadn't even flirted before, let alone gone on a date. "Of course," he said with a smile, giving her hand a final wiggle. "Are you ready to go home?"

"Yeah," Maia said, reluctantly. She sat up, wishing the fireworks would start up again. "Let's go home," she said. She gave Toby a smile and started to pack up their things.
"Ready, Dari?" she asked, reaching for the alien's hand. She wanted to keep track of him, it was hard to see when it was so dark!

Dari nodded and began gathering up their things with Toby. When they were well-packed they headed for the car. Toby already missed the closeness of the event. Oh well. There would be other times.

It was mid July when Maia noticed Toby at some woman's desk. She had intended on bringing him a coffee and a bagel, and froze. Hm. Girlfriend, maybe? Friend? They seemed to be flirting.
Quite in the way he flirted with her, actually. "I brought you a bagel," she said, offering it to Toby. "And coffee."
That done, she gave the room a quick glance around for Dari. Why hadn't he told her Toby was interested in someone else?

Toby had been nearly sitting on Kelly's desk, laughing with her. They had an odd sort of friendship, a close workplace one, and flirted with wild abandon. There was no romance between them though. Kelly was a bit rough, not really Toby's type, and Kelly herself preferred men who weren't men. In fact she didn't like men romantically at all. Thus, Toby always found it safe to flirt with her and use her as a sounding board.
"Oh, thanks!" Toby said, taking the bagel from Maia, and opening his mouth to introduce the two, but Maia had already stalked off. Uh...?
Dari was in their office working, completely unaware that anything had gone awry.

Maia headed to the agents' office, after failing to find Dari elsewhere. She opened the door. "Hi Dari," she greeted the alien, frowning slightly. "Toby's flirting with another woman," she complained, immediately. She sat down in her chair, crossing her arms. "Why didn't you tell me he liked someone else?"
