"They're always pretty to see," Maia smiled at Toby. Her eyes veered straight ahead after a while; and though She couldn't spot Toby's house, the view was rather nice. "Lets go on this again when the lights are on," She suggested. "After we eat."

"Okay, we can do that." He might have to buy more tickets, but that was fine. He'd come here willing to shell out whatever it took to make Maia's first carnival experience excellent.
When the ride was over, Toby led Maia to the next ride. "Everything else goes a little faster."

Maia had undoubtedly seen fireworks before, maybe even from her own beach, but now she had friends to go with. She and Toby had packed a picnic, Dari had painted up well, and they had gone off to the field as the sun set to lay out their blanket and a couple of pillows and get ready to watch the show.
Dari was more concerned with letting Toby and Maia have some bonding time and watching the show, really.
"Do you want something from the ice cream truck?" Toby asked.

Maia had never spent a holiday with friends before, had never really watched fireworks apart from in the ocean. She had been thrilled when Toby had informed her of it.
"Ice cream?" she echoed, looking up from straightening the blanket. "Alright! Dari, would you like something?"

"No, thank you," Dari said.
Toby went with Maia to the truck and waited in line behind a bizarre mixture of children and adults. For himself he ordered a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, for Dari a Screwball, and then turned to Maia. What did she want?

Maia looked to see what the ice cream truck had, considering, before selecting a strawberry shortcake ice cream bar. "You got one for Dari anyway," she smiled at Toby. "Good." Ice cream was something Dari enjoyed, just like marshmallows. "Let's go make him eat it," she said.
Even for a bag of slime, it was perfect weather for ice cream, wasn't it?

"That's the plan," Toby said with a smile. They returned to their blanket and Dari didn't fight against his treat, instead peeling it open and going at it with the wooden paddle. Toby sighed and settled in beside Maia, his arm touching hers. Intentional? Who knew? He then looked down at his watch.
"Supposedly we're on on six."

Maia opened her own ice cream after ensuring Dari was eating his, And took a bite. When Toby's arm brushed hers she looked to him and followed his gaze. Six, that wasn't too long from now. "It'll be beautiful!" she said. "I've only seen then from the water. It'll be better here."
Better with friends. "I brought marshmallows for you, Dari," she said.

Dari perked and made a soft "hmm?" sound. Marshmallows?!
Toby just grinned. Maia liked to take care of his best friend, and he liked that.
"Never from the beach? They're pretty good from the water, but we're closer this time." Hence the pillows, in case it became more comfortable to lay back.

Maia grinned and looked for the bag in their picnic stuff. She handed It to him. "Here," She said. "I brought you a treat too," She said, looking to Toby. "Can you find it?"
"Nah, too many people on the beach," Maia said with a shake of her head. "On new years less people came, probably because it was always so cold."

Toby began to rifle through the bag. A treat? Like what? He turned up to Maia.
"You know, you owned that stretch of beach just outside your house. Legally you could have thrown everyone off or called the cops or... anything, really." Back to rifling.

"It would've been nice," Maia sighed. "But I wasn't aware my parents had purchased the beach. And they wouldn't have taken me seriously." Not until the last five years, anyway. "Adults never seem to listen to kids."
She grinned as he rifled. It was a small bag of Hershey kisses with almonds. "Chocolate," she said. "They're good."

Toby pulled the bag out and pulled it open with a little half-grimace, then took one to eat. He smiled at Maia.
"Thank you. They make all different kinds all year." Then he was back to his fruity children's ice cream. He offered Maia the bag of kisses. Did she want one?

Maia took a kiss, carefully unwrapping it and crumbling the wrapper into a ball. She stuck it in her pocket for later. "Do you have a favorite kind?" She asked.

"Not really," Toby said, shaking his head. "You know what, though? They're older than me, so that's nice."
The national anthem began to play through enormous speakers, echoing down the field.
"Ooh, it's starting!"
