"She's a sweet kid," Nita agreed. "It's kind of hard to imagine anyone not liking her."

Nita shrugged and sat silently, a bit uncomfortable. She felt bad for Rex, and annoyed with herself for pressing the issue. Even if she really hadn't meant to upset him. "I'm sorry," she murmured, reclaiming her hand.

"Really! It's no big deal. I can accept that they were pretty awful people, but y'know.. whats passed has passed." They needed a subject change as the very last sliver of the sun disappeared over the endless sea, though the light still shone orange in the sky. "Want to swim? The water takes longer to cool down than the sand so it'll feel nice and warm." Plus that was the whole reason he came to the beach, anyway.

Nita frowned again, but nodded. If Rex was willing to change the subject, so was she.

"Sure," she said. "I'm out here a lot at night, since it means I don't have to worry about getting sunburned. Nita held out her freckled arms, the undersides of which shone slightly in the last of the sunlight. "I'm a pale, pale little white girl."

Nita pulled off her jeans, revealing the same rather dingy blue swimsuit. She had gotten a lot more use out of it in the past weeks than she'd expected.

Rex crawled to his feet and chuckled, "I never really had that problem. Good genes I suppose..." He made a few steps towards the waters and said over his shoulder, "Plus I don't have the whole 'girl' thing either." He smiled and jogged into the waves, flipping like a whale's breach before splashing into the water, splashing at the shore to encourage Nita to come in.

"I burn, and then I peel... and then I get more freckles." Nita snorted. "And no, you're definitely NOT a girl!"

Nita waded in, relieved to find that the water was still pleasantly warm. She stopped when the water reached her thighs. "Just a warning," she called out. "I don't swim that well."

He'd swam out into the deeper water and treaded idly over the slowly sighing waves."Don't worry about it. I dove off a darn ship to try and save Avery! Then I taught Colche how to swim, you'll be safe with me." He smiled and stroked back to where it was easier to stand, the water came up to his chest. His fur and hair matted down wetly across his body and face, Rex shook his head to get his hair out of his eyes and sent bullets of water through the air in all directions. His hair stood on end, stiffer and thickker than his hair had been before he'd gotten to the island...

Nita bounce-walked out a few more paces, having forgotten how buoyant saltwater was. Of course, water reaching Rex's chest was up to Nita's chin. She stood on tip-toe to keep the waves from splashing her in the face. After dunking herself a couple of times, Nita blew water out of her nose and leaned back, clumsily but effectively treading water.

"And I thought kitties didn't like water," she joked.

Rex laughed and moved in even closer to the shore so it was easier for the girl to stand through the pulsing waves, "Y'okay?" He couldn't help but smile, she was so petite!

He paused, thinking about the water and cats. "To tell you the truth, I frankly just don't know!" he laughed, but continued to analyze, he was still getting used to his new instincts, whether they were wanted or not! "I.. don't feel anything different in the water. It's not any different than normal." Maybe those insticts just hadn't hit yet, though he hoped they never would. Rex loved water in nearly any form, living out of it forever would kill him before the doctors did.

"Oh, I'm fine," Nita said airily, although she did take the chance to move into shallower waters. "You're just too tall!" She blushed, realizing she'd said the same thing to Lauren only a few nights before.

"I think some big cats do like water, though. I've seen stuff on Animal Planet with tigers swimming." Nita shrugged. Red pandas probably weren't too fond of the ocean.

"Hey, I'm not that tall, you're just a shorty!" Rex laughed and sent a splash her way. He, too, had a memory of Lauren. He really enjoyed her company, though he'd only seen her briefly at the beach party since then.

Rex had a distinct memory of some kind of big cat swimming as well, maybe it wasn't so strange. There were some weird superstitions and presumptions out there, things were different when you were living as that lie. "We're pretty dang cut off out here, on the island... No TV, no computers, no phones." He kicked back in the water and bobbed gently along the surface.

"Pff, that's what they all say," Nita shot back, sticking her tongue out at Rex. Oh yes. Very mature. She squeaked and dodged the splash, only getting water in her ear instead of full in the face.

Nita folded her arms, pretending to be cranky. She sighed. "Yeah, I do miss the internet. And they've got a lot of TV shows on DVD in that rec room, but it just isn't the same."

Rex caught a wave and floated in towards the shore, scrambling to his feet once again and trudging up to his towel. The moon in the sky reflected on the water's rippling surface, shaking in the wakes' disturbance. He dried off his face and chest, then ran his towel down his legs and wrapped it around his waist. "Well that was refreshing!" He sighed and smiled.

Nita half-bounce-walked, half-swam back to shore and retrieved her own towel. She brushed the water from her arms and legs, spending a couple of minutes wringing out her braids. Shaking sand off of her towel, she wrapped herself up and slipped her sandals on.

She nodded, staring out across the moonlit water. "Mmhm. And it was good seeing you again." A yawn split her face. "All this salt in the air makes me sleepy."

"Yeah! it was nice to see you as we-!" Rex's sentence was cut short by a large, cat-like yawn. His fangs became much more pronounced and his tounge unfurled like a red carpet. He blinked a few times and said, "I think I ought to get to bed... I'll see you around though, okay? It was nice to see you!" Rex smiled and waved, walking back to his duplex through the jungle.

Nita grinned, both because yawns were contagious and because of how feline Rex looked just then. "G'night Rex," she called after him. Gathering up her jeans, she walked slowly back to the village, following the tideline until she needed to make her way through the darkened jungle.
