i need to work on my tone. i sand my reeds which helps a lot, but my tone isn't where it needs to be yet.
should i get a better ligature or change my embouchure?

it doesn't matter what tpe of ligature you have. just try a new reed or tighten your embouchure. btw, how long have you been playin, and who uses cloth ligatures?

Actually, Ligature means a lot when it comes to tone. A 20 dollar Luyben is a lot better than the metal ligatures because the Luyben secures the reed in a different way then the normal ones do. That makes the reed vibrate better for better tone, and easier sound.

Ligature means a lot.

Long tones help a lot with tone, I was like you two years ago, except I didn't really know how horrible I was until I changed teachers, but I had horrible tone and was a real amateur when it came to playing, but the day my new teacher came almost two years ago changed my whole musical perspective....O_o; sounds cheesy but I did long tones every single day

and I improved alot :] if you do long tones it'd help, Ligatures help too but then you don't really get the full use of any of the great clarinets or their ligatures etc etc until you mature in your tone, then it makes a difference with ligatures and everything. If you do want to do long tones you should try doing them in fifve intervals chromatically [ E B E, F C E, F# C# F# etc etc, one octave for now] half notes, tempo 60

then you'll wow everyone, if you do it every day, it takes ten minutes out of your day, but you won't regret it.
good luck!

Hello again all! Meru here once more..

Anyways, thanks to those who had helped me with my last question earlier, I still have yet to get a new mouthpeice, but my birthday comes up with promises to get to the store.

I come to you today with a different problem and question though. Reed warping!
Okay, I dry and clean my reeds off fully before I put them into their cases and I do my best to take care of them, but the thin edge of my reeds always warp- sometimes even after only a few days of playing.
My school sells med-hard La Viz reeds, which I think are decent and since my parents can't get me to a store alot anyways I end up having to get them.
But my question is, is it the reed type I got that makes it warp? Should I change to a different style, and if so what type?(something that is around a 3 1/2 and can produce a good tone if what I'm looking for)
Or is there a way to fix this problem?

Yeah just what is a good way to cleen ur mouthpeice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a mild soap like dish soap works and a small bottle brush. thats what i use. i wouldnt soak it because knowing me i would probably do something wrong and the cork would fall off. i would get a funny look from our instructor if i told him i needed him to replace because it fell off when i was cleaning it....

oh and about being the masters of the controlled squeak..that is totally true. we actually got to play a song for marching where we were supposed to squeak. it was like a hole bunch of old scary movie theme songs. i think it was from "Psycho".

Well if you're in it for tone, then I suggest the black (Or clear) Luyben ligatures... They're like 12-20 bucks (really cheap compared to the metal ones) and they're really good... PLUS, I'd also suggest some good Vandoren reeds (Their best make is the 2 and a halves. If you're three, it's not very different. If you're two, you just need to tighten up your embouchure a little bit). You can try sanding them, but all that really does is adjust you to a size in between two. It'll only help you if you can't get a size up, or half-size down to work.

I know Vandoren reeds are expensive (REALLY expensive) but they're totally worth it. They're a French brand, and they also make a REALLY good B45 mouthpiece.

Now don't go and buy a B45 (Which is about 100 bucks) unless you have the professional model to go with it. Professional Mouthpiece needs a professional clarinet.
