kyonkyon-chan Hyper Sharpie kyonkyon-chan sorry.. i wouldn't know.. I have only used rico and Vandoren... and i dont use rico anymore :p =o I use Rico. ;D Band director makes every reed player play on vandoren :p That's weird. Mr. Blackwell doesn't have any preferences. (then again, he's a precussionist, so he doesn't really care a bout reeds.) I myself have used Rico, but I use Vandoren now. Size 3. I used to use 3 1/2, but when I tried out for All State, one of the judges suggested that I go down a step or two because it's easier to get the notes out. So I went down to 3. Oh, and for those who have trouble with new reeds, just keep adjusting it. The tiniest measure from the original spot could make the biggest difference. At least I've found that out. It works for me! ^^

Scnope I just gotta throw this out there. I love the taste of a new reed :] Sadly, Bassoon reeds dont taste as good. sweatdrop So when one of my clarinet friends get a box of new reeds i beg to suck on one. blaugh OMG I know! I've always loved that taste! And being a sax player, I don't have to ask ;D It's weird, though. If you get a box of reeds that have the individual reed cases wrapped in a wrapper, they don't taste good. I miss the taste....

I miss the taste of fresh vandoren sax reeds. Oboe reeds don't have a distinct taste sad I had a clinician come judge our band before contest, my senior yr. of HS and he told our section that synthetics are like walking in glass shoes, whatever that means.... Yep, cane gives....well, a natural sound!

so. couple things about reeds. a) i like the taste, too. b) when i first started on clarinet, the place i got my reeds and stuff had this stuff they could dip the reeds into to make them taste like mint or bubble gum. it was yummy. c) i have a friend who plays bass clarinet and, when our band director lets him in songs that have one, contra-alto clarinet. he has to buy all his own. he has no job. we're only in high school. sad

toco clarinet MezzoPianoX im a freshman and I play a 4 vandoren is that bad? o-o that's HORRIBLE. a GOOD musician should be able to sound good on a size 1 rico >_> Erm, I'm not too sure on that. I was always told to never play on anything softer than a 2 when I first started, and you should always to to play the hardest reed you CAN HANDLE.

I was always told to never play on anything softer than a 2 when I first started, and you should always to to play the hardest reed you CAN HANDLE. that must be because you're not a very good musician smile . sure, some reeds work better for certain people (not EVERYONE, mind you), but that does not mean they don't sound good on different reeds as well. it's common sense that if you sound good on a mitchell lurie size 3, your preference of reeds will be a mitchell lurie size 3. but i'm sure that if you're at least a decent musician, if you find yourself at the disadvantage of not being in possession of your favorite reed at the time you are required to play, you will make do with whatever is available. even if that happens to be a size 1 rico. also, i'm curious. you said that you've always been told that you shouldn't play on anything lower than a 2. have you ever tried to play on anything lower than a 2? if not your opinion is invalid and doesn't have any real weight within this conversation. i mean no offense, but if you have never tested opinion, how can anyone else trust that you're right? to address your statement regarding the usage of the hardest reeds you can handle: No. you should not. i can handle a size 5 mitchell lurie quite nicely, but i use a size 3. i sound much better on a size three than on a size 5. i don't sound bad on a size 5, like i said, i can handle them quite nicely. but why make myself sound less than my best just to impress people? from the audience, no one can see the size of your reed, the brand of your clarinet or mouthpiece, and most of the time they don't even care. they want to hear good music. they don't care how impressive it is that you can play on a ridiculously sized reed or how hard your music is.

The bigger the size, the harder to play.
A girl in my band was using a reed size 4, and our BD had a huge spaz at her. (Our BD NEVER EVER EVER EVER spazzes) She was all, "WHAT???? A SIZE 4???? MY HUSBAND, A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN, PLAYED ON A 4 WHEN HE PRACTICED FOR OVER 4 HOURS A DAY! AND IT WAS EVEN TOO MUCH FOR HIM! YOU'RE GOING TO HURT YOU'RE MOUTH IF YOU KEEP TRYING TO PLAY ON THAT!"
Our BD was actually furious. To this day, that is the only time I've seen her yell, and it was scary.
The lower sizes are for beginners, it sacrifices the sound, but is easier to play on.

i'm very very picky when it comes to reeds
for my bass clarinet, i play on strength 3 vandoren reeds i've tried rico, rico royal, and la vos bass cl. reeds and i've found them to be too.. woody feeling, and harder to get a good, even sound out of
i also use strength 3 vandoren's on my tenor sax (but i plan on trying something new soon.. something better for jazz)
and on my Bb clarinet, i play on strength 3 rico royals, and sometimes a 2.5, but not often
don't you guys hate expensive reeds are? D: the other day i went to the music store and got two bass cl. reeds, a tenor reed, and two Bb clarinet reeds and it was around 50 dollars ridiculous!
