Dear Journal,
Well, we're almost done moving into the new place. We had to stop for awhile during the holidays cuz Dad wasn't around to help. His job had him go off to this fundraiser thingy the radio station he works at was hosting. Mom wasn't too crazy about having to put things on hold, but he's back now.
I think Aunt Karma kinda wants us out of here soon, though. That or she's just worried because Arkie's not home yet. Its hard to tell with her, but the house IS crowded.
OH! Kendall's showing me how to play this new Katamari game he got. I'm getting kinda good at it. At least it isn't as bad as when he tried to get me to play Clocktower with him. Mom told me it would give me nightmares...I still don't have the guts to tell her I had bad dreams about Scissorman for a week afterwards.
At least spring'll be here soon. I miss being able to go outside whenever I want without having to wear a sweatshirt and a coat. That and about this time of the year, the snow stops being pretty and it gets all gross and gray. Dad says as long as he doesn't have to shovel it, he doesn't care what color it turns or how long it sticks around.
Anyway, I gotta go. I'm supposed to be helping Phaerna get her toys in boxes and stuff. I just wanted to try out this journal thing. Still need a good place to hide it.

It had been a seemingly-endless winter. When you had one child who wouldn't stop poking his nose into things in the name of curiousity and another that jumped at shadows who you had to convince the snow was NOT a flurry of bugs, it tended to wear your nerves ragged.
Talon sat sprawled on the couch in the midst of a sunbeam, the tip of his tail twitching pensively. In most cases, things could not be better. He was learning to enjoy his new job, it netted them more than enough money to exist on, and he still had plenty of time to spend with his kids and wife.
On the downside, however, the entire household had acquired a nasty case of cabin fever. Yeande had practically burst from the house as soon as the soil was thawed enough to dig in to begin planting bulbs, Zhane had been harrassing them at every opportunity to take him on hikes and such, and Phaerna....well, he couldn't really complain about Phaerna. She was behaving herself rather well.
He turned his head slightly, watching as the little drow nymph quietly sat on the carpet, poring over one of her picture books in silence, examining each page with terrible concentration before turning to the next. She was so careful and quiet about her presense, that unless you looked for her, you didn't even know she was there.
"Phae?" he said quietly, making her jolt and look up at him with wide eyes. "You want to go to the park?" She blinked slowly, the wings on her back giving a faint flutter as though she was heavily considering this. Talon, in spite of himself, smiled a bit.
Yeande had been going on about taking her to a child psychologist for her social anxiety, but as far as he was concerned, it wasn't an issue. What was wrong with being shy, after all? With any luck, she'd keep it up until she was well into her adult years and he would never have to worry about the dating demon rearing its head under his roof.
Stretching, he got up from the couch and approached her as she continued to goggle up at him. She no longer cringed when her parents approached her, and THAT was something, at least...
As he bent to scoop her up, she absently grabbed the leg of her mouse plushie to take along with her. "At this hour," he continued "everybody's going to be eating dinner, so nobody will even be around to bother us. It'll just be you, me, and a couple of squirrels, what do you think?"
"Nyah..." she murmured noncommittedly, not sure if she liked the idea of squirrels or not as he fumbled his keys out of his pocket
"Where ya going?" Zhane inquired, poking his head around the corner, summoned by the jingling of car keys.
"The park. Your sister looks like she could use some fresh air."
"COOL! Can I come??" he asked, already grabbing for his jacket off of the stairs.
"If you promise not to run off again, then yes." Talon sighed. "I'm not fishing you out of another drainage ditch."
Phaerna's eyes flicked back and forth between her father and her brother as they spoke, breaking a smile as Zhane trotted up in his jacket and reaching for him. Talon surrendered her as she clung to her older brother like a koala and opened the front door to let the children outside.
"Can I sit in front?" Zhane asked, grunting a bit to readjust Phaerna in his arms. He didn't mind playing taxi for his sister, but she was so danged heavy!
"No. I need you to stay in the back and make sure she doesn't try to Houdini her way out of her carseat again." Talon replied, tapping a button on the keychain to unlock the car.
"What if we both sat in front?" Zhane tried. "She's almost big enough to not need a carseat anyway!"
"So I can get pulled over by a cop trying to meet his quota? I don't think so." his father replied, jerking a thumb toward the back seat as he opened the driver's door.
"You're no fun." Zhane pouted, opening the back door and hefting Phaerna into her car seat.
"Neither are tickets. One day you'll learn that and hopefully not while you're under MY insurance plan."
Phaerna held still as she was buckled in and waited for Zhane to climb over her and slam the car door behind him. She didn't mind sitting in the back as long as someone was back there with her...but when everybody else was up front, it just felt so LONELY back here. That had been the only reason she'd tried to escape...
As the car's engine ground and then caught, she began to absently chew the ear of her mouse plush, hoping that wherever they were going was not too terribly noisy.

A Visit To Maban Mabwysiad
What had begun as a trip to the park, had quickly taken on a more ominous tone. Talon, Phaerna, and Zhane had been there no less than an hour before Talon's cel phone had buzzed in his jacket pocket. A deep rumbling voice had informed him that he or Yeande ought to come to Maban Mabwysiad at their earliest convenience and to bring Phaerna.
That it was part of their new "policy". Something about the man's voice had made Talon uneasy, but the number had checked out as matching the one he'd kept in his directory for MM, and so he'd told the strange voice that he'd be right over.
"Howcome we've gotta go HERE?" Zhane complained as his father pulled the car along the curb and put it in park.
"I don't know. They want to see your sister."
Phaerna looked up from playing with her mouse plushie inquisitively. Usually when 'sister' was mentioned in Zhane's presense, they were talking about her. The black-haired ijiou hesitated and then unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed out of the car, circling around back to unstrap Phae and pick her up.
"Maybe its her real parents and they want her back." Zhane suggested, making the bottom drop out of Talon's stomach.
"Don't say things like that." he growled.
"But what if it is??" Zhane pressed, not understanding that what he was saying could be taken as being very hurtful.
Talon's lips thinned to a bloodless white line as he looked at Phaerna and the little drow nymph gazed steadfastly back at him with green eyes that matched his own, despite not being a blood-relation. They wouldn't take her back, would they? Not now...not after all of this time.
Phae cracked a smile and he had to look away.
"Just...we'll see, okay? I'm sure its nothing." Talon assured his son as the three of them entered the MM building.
Unlike most days, when the building seemed to house such an eerie silence, the adoption agency was now filled with sound... Many sounds, actually. There were four small children seated in the middle of the floor playing with a pile of multi-colored wooden blocks. The one with thick, chestnut hair seemed to be in 'control' of the situation, directing who would put which block where. The girl who, from the looks of it, must have been Skye's daughter, was ignoring him completely... As were the two identical boys who were happily gnawing on blocks while black wings fluttered against their heads.
Seated on the floor not far from them was the dragoness who, upon hearing the door open, quickly scrambled to her feet. "Talon... Hello! I'm glad to see you." Her voice sounded quite cheerful despite the over-abundance of brattlings on her floor... And despite the rather large man in the black suit who stood not far behind her looking as intimidating as possible. "And Phae and Zhane as well... My, they've both grown."
"Hi Miss Skye!" Zhane waved and then quickly had his attention drawn to the children playing on the floor. It had been awhile since he'd played with any kids other than his sister...every time they went by the GMFC and looked in, the place seemed deserted these days. He stood, watching them, his tail twitching as they played with the blocks. Little kids were neat. They weren't all uppity about things like older kids and adults were.
Phaerna, as was her custom when dealing with anyone who was not her mom, dad, or brother, promptly buried her face in Talon's chest and tried to make herself as small as possible to hide.
"Nice to see you too." Talon nodded once respectfully, trying pointedly NOT to look at the hulking gorilla of a man that stood nearby. "I...got a call not too long ago from someone over here. They said they needed me to bring Phae..." He was inwardly praying that it was not The Human Wall that had summoned them.
The little boy who seemed to be 'in charge' turned at the sound of Zhane's voice, brow furrowing slightly. The soft feathers of his wings fluffed with a bit of distaste but a quick glare from his mother set him playing with the blocks peacefully once more.
The little girl with the fiery hair and the pretty blue eyes offered a sheepish smile to the Zhane while waving tiny fingers. "P'ay?" Her words were still a bit hard to come by and, sometimes, harder to understand... But it should have been understood easily enough when she held up a block. Maybe he could make something better than her brother could.
"Yes... A call..." She coughed, letting the toe of her slipper-like shoe dig into the carpet. "Actually, before we go any further, I'd like to apologize for that. It... Appears that, upon opening this adoption agency there were a few... Legal technicalities that we... Overlooked." Her eyes narrowed as a snort-like laugh came from the muscular man leaning against the wall. "It seem as if those who govern this section of Gaia saw it fit to have a social worker step in to oversee our work... See to it that everything is legit and that the children are being cared for." Her brow furrowed slightly, eyes drifting down as she continued. "It also seems as if a few of our adoptive parents have been improperly caring for their children..."
Talon's wings tensed a bit on his back, hoping it was not being implied that he wasn't properly taking care of Zhane and Phaerna. "I see..." he nodded, finally daring to look at the larger suited man. Now that he was here, there wasn't much to do except wait to see what they wanted to speak to him about.
Zhane lit up immediately at the invitation and approached the small group, dropping to his knees among them. "Okay!" he said brightly. "What're you building?" he asked whoever cared to try and answer.
Knowing well that she wasn't the best mother in the world, she herself wasn't completely comfortable woth the massive man standing not far off. Granted, she didn't trust many men as of late anyways... But this brute was supposed to work with children? If anything, Talon should have seen the fit she threw when the man first arrived.
"I think he just wants to ask a few questions. I've assured him that most of our parents are good, responsible people and, if they aren't, then their spouses or significant others are..." She laughed, trying to break a bit of the tension. "If you wouldn't mind just stepping into my office, we'll get this over and done with as quickly as possible..." Her voice dropped low as she leaned in towards Talon. "Between you and I, we became a great deal more picky when it came to applicants after the first batch... And it's that first batch that we had the issues with. I'm sure everything will go well and, if it doesn't, I'll bash him on the head while you run."
"Cass'le." The little girl spoke once more, letting a soft smile slip into place on rosie lips. Yes, she was definately her mother's daughter... There would be no question about that. "Li' s--st'ory." She nodded. A fairytale castle... Like the one in the story the big man who reminded her of the big guy in armor that they saw in town had told them.
The eldest of the three boys, her brother, ignored them both, trying to gather as many blocks as he could for his own building purposes. The twins, clad in tacky rainbow and cloud pajamas, continued their gnawing for the moment, content to chew... And drool.
"A castle, huh? Like the one in Sleeping Beauty? Or like the one in Rapunzel with the BIG tower?" He was accustomed to making small talk with kids by now and had hashed out the role of "big brother" pretty well for himself.
Talon's ears perked to catch all of what she'd said, but it was somewhat comforting to know that she didn't like this man either. At least it erased the idea that they were ganging up on him. And that he might lose Phaerna over it. "Sounds like a plan," he nodded, holding Phaerna just a little tighter. "Sorry you've been having issues, by the way. Were people really just..." his eyes wandered to the kids playing on the floor. "...leaving?"
"Rrrrora." She nodded, nose scrunching slightly as she struggled with her 'r' sounds. "N'ba'd fae'rrr'ies." No, no bad fairies. There was no need for a bad fairy of any sort when her brother was around. She liked the story the best at the end... With the good fairies... And the color changing dress.
The twins seemed to take intrest in the 'building' now, but only slightly, eyeing the larger boy with wide eyes. The wings on the sides of their head fell still as they watched on with great curiosity.
She paused their conversation for a moment as another man entered the room. This one, with soft waves of blonde hair and innocent blue eyes, was clearly not a threat. No, he would keep an eye on the little ones while they were having their 'meeting'. He was good with children and Skye trusted him with her twins so she saw no reason why she shouldn't trust him with someone elses as well.
Once she was certain that her children's 'guardian' was watching them she turned back to Talon with a nod. "Yes. According to Barty (short for Bartleby, my twins had a field-day with that), at least, who found those two on one of his first checks this morning..." She shook her head slowly and sighed, leading him towards her office with the large male bringing up the rear. "I really don't understand... People come here wanting children and..." It was too much for her to continue, at least without getting frustrated.
"No bad fairies, gotcha." Zhane smiled, reaching out to place a block on the castle and help them build it. It was actually pretty good, considering how young they were...probably wouldn't be in danger of toppling over until it got a bit higher. "You guys are all visiting at once, huh?" He didn't seem to notice as his father and sister were led off by Skye and the stranger in the suit as supervision was taken over by Barty.
"They see it in the movies, I guess...parents taking care of a rambunctious kid and they think its all sunshine and rainbows. It isn't." Talon tried to keep a tone of bitterness out of his voice as he reminded himself that he had NOT wanted children in the beginning and had been buffalloed every step of the way by his wife.
Zhane and Phae had grown on him, though, thankfully. He barely remembered what life was like without them these days. Phae dared to draw her eyes away from her daddy's shirt just enough to peer at the adults taking her into a strange room in this strange place. Her wings began to shake a bit on her shoulders, as she wondered what they planned on doing.
This wasn't another doctor's office, was it? She wasn't going to get a SHOT, was she??
"Mam broug't'us." The little boy with the darker hair and the feathered wings spoke up finally, reguarding the others with a cool, green gaze. Something about him seemed... Off. As if there was something more than just a sweet, innocent child sitting there.
The little girl who had been talking to Zhane simply nodded in agreement. "Mam broug'us... An'... Bar-tee-bee brough'tem." She gestured with tiny hands towards the other, younger set of twins. She didn't know their names... But Mam did. They were quiet... Didn't even talk yet.
The two boys in question blinked at the same time, lowering the blocks from their mouths. They couldn't remember ever being in this place before... But the blocks were good and the strange-lady and stranger-man seemed nice enough.
He snorted softly, shutting the door behind them after everyone entered the cozy office. It was unlike most offices, complete with a couch and a large, reclining chair... Right along with a desk and a refriderator as well as a microwave that seemed as if it had never been used before. "That's exactly what it is. Seen too many cases of it lately. Luckily, seems like most of the adoptive parents from this place check out... Most of them."
Skye rolled her eyes before taking a seat on her desk... Then, after recieving an over-the-sunglasses look from Barty, she hopped down, taking a seat behind the desk. "Make yourself comfortable, Talon. Anything I can get for you?" She glanced down to the little girl who was shaking like the leaves her coloration matched. "... Or for her? A lolipop or something?"
Zhane quirked a brow at this, not really understanding what they'd said, but he nodded regardless. Sounded like someone named Mam had brought them here. Did one lady really take care of all of them at once? That must've been a busy household... deciding to change the subject, he turned back to the subject of the castle being built "Too bad there's no little figures, huh? It would be cool to put a knight down here guarding the door and maybe a princess up in the tower there..."
Talon awkwardly took a seat on the edge of the couch, Phaerna clinging to his chest as though for dear life. There was no way she was getting handed off to one of the two strangers for shots or other doctor stuff. If they wanted her, they'd have to pry her off.
"I think we're okay..." he told her, looking down at his adopted daughter's clenched state. "Sorry, she gets like this around people she doesn't know very well. We tried leaving her and Zhane with a babysitter one night while we went out....never again." he sighed, recalling the babysitter's constant and frantic calls to his cel phone about how Phaerna would not come out from behind the couch until he and Yeande had given up on having a peaceful evening out and had come home to rectify matters.
"Mam sa's I'ma prin'sess." She nodded, smiling that odd, Skye-like smile... A smile that seemed to broaden as she heard the laughter from the blonde-haired male who was sitting nearby keeping an eye on the little playgroup. "Bu'... No k'nig'its. Draaaagons." She nodded once more, letting her wings fan out behind her as she did, fluttering them happily.
The fluttering of her wings caught the attention of the pale-haired twins whose head-wings began to flutter as an instant result. They giggled, clearly entertained.
"No, it's alright." The large man nodded as he pulled out a clip-board, flipping through the first few pages slowly. "Her mother was a nymph, right? Then it's a good thing she shows such trust in you as her parent. Those sort... Tricky." He nodded, marking a few things down on the paper. "Tell me a bit about yourself... The family at home, other children..."
She attempted to lean over her desk and peer at the paper, quite curious as to what his 'notes' said, if anything. Her nose scrunched when it was pulled out of her view.
"Really? I'm a dragon too! ...well...kinda..." Zhane said, fluttering his own purple-and-blue wings. It was nice to find something in common. "Mom and Dad don't really know what they are, but they look like dragons." That, actually, was something that annoyed him...that neither his mom nor dad knew what they were and that neither of them really seemed to care to find out, either. HE wanted to know...
Talon cleared his throat, feeling like a fly under a microscope as he straightened up a bit, his small wings flaring a bit as though trying unsuccessfully to give him an air of authority. "Well..." he began. "....I live with my wife, Yeande, Phaerna obviously, and you saw Zhane in the waiting room. I work on a radio show from about seven till ten every night with weekends off, Yeande is a stay-at-home mom and is a big fan of gardening..."
He was shooting in the dark, here, not really knowing what the man wanted to hear. "Zhane is our biological son...he and Phae are very close, actually. Ever since they were babies. Somewhere along the line, he had a growth spurt before she did, though..."
"Keif's'a d'agon too." She nodded happily while admiring his wings. Hers were like that... Alot like that, with bluish purple for the main part, almost black in some places. Of course, the webbing from her wings was a silvery blue in color. That seemed to match her far better than the dark wings. "Rrr'ian's'only haf." Yes, her twin was only 'part dragon'. He only had a tail... And fluffy wings.
He snorted, crossing his arms over his chest. As far as he was concerned, he was more of a dragon than his sister would ever be. She was too nice. Not at all like the big, mean dragons in stories... The stories that his mother had insisted that Doe'kitty wasn't allowed to read them, but had anyways.
... ... ...
"Biological kid, eh?" He nodded, almost as if in approval of some sort. "And they get along?" Repeat, repeat, repeat. "Good. Very good. We get alot of households that have biological kids that don't get along too well with the others. Makes 'em feel like their being replaced, so I've been told."
He glanced down at his sheet for a moment, letting his eyes drift towards the dragon-lady before they shifted back to the man and his daughter. "Seems like Ms. Starrfyre's actually done her job well with settling that wee one with you. A mother who loves gardening for a plant-life nymph."
It was her turn to snort now, eyes narrowing slightly. "Don't sound so suprised. Told you we made at least least a few good decisions."
"Lots of dragons, it seems like..." Zhane smiled at the little girl. Man, if these kids were here all of the time, he'd have to come back more often. He'd forgotten how much fun it was to simply sit and play as he placed another two blocks on the structure. "Did you ever see that movie The Reluctant Dragon?" he asked. He'd only seen it himself recently on Disney.
Talon's hold on Phaerna loosed just a bit when it began to sound as though they didn't intend on labelling him an unfit father. "Yeande adopted her when Zhane was still very small because of that very thing. The doctor said she couldn't have any more kids because of the strain it put on her body, so she looked into this place. She didn't exactly TELL me at the time, but...we worked things out."
"S'cuz of Mam." She nodded. Her Mam was a dragon... And that meant that her kids were dragons too. "Nope." She said that word quite clearly, almost as if it were one that she'd practiced saying before. "S'goo' moofee?"
Bored with their conversation, Rian stood up, towering over their castle. From the looks of things, he almost seemed as if he was going to kick it over... But he didn't. No, not yet, at least.
... ... ...
"Women." He shook his head, ignoring the look from Skye... The look that said if he spoke of 'women' in that way once more she'd toss him out of her office and out of her adoption agency, even if he was a good foot taller than she was (a good foot wider as well). "Well, from the sounds of things you're doing a fine job. Only one more thing you can expect from me before I'm out of your hair for a good while... Gonna have to set up a house visit."
"Well, *I* liked it..." Zhane began, his eye turning warily to Rian, waiting to see if he'd kick over the castle or not. "Aw c'mon, don't do that..." he urged the young boy. They could just rebuild it if he kicked it over, but it would probably upset the other kids to have it knocked down, regardless. And he wasn't very good with crying kids...at least there was an adult there to see what was going on, though so nobody could blame him if everybody suddenly burst into wailing.
... ... ...
Talon blinked forcibly. "A house visit." he repeated. "I....okay. I guess. I'll need to tell Yeande, though." It wasn't as though they lived in a slum...as far as he was concerned, they were actually doing okay for themselves all things considered, they'd just never actually had company over. He hadn't even invited Karma over to see the new house and didn't exactly intend to.
He glared down at the older boy for a good, long moment before storming off, crawling up onto the couch to sulk. He'd just ignore the rest of them... And get back at his sister for it later.
She scrunched her nose slightly, half tempted to stick his tongue out at her brother... But she didn't. "I'll ask Mam 'bou' it." She nodded at Zhane. If he liked it then it had to be pretty good. Afterall, he seemed.. What was that word? 'Cool' enough?
... ... ...
"You pick the date and time and I'll be there... No suprise visits. Don't think you need one of those." He nodded before looking to Skye. "Now... Some of these other parents..."
She stood up, moving towards the door in order to open it. "You leave my good parents alone... Go pick on someone your own size... Like the Jolly Green. Or Leon. Talon, you're free to go now." She smiled before mouthing 'Run, I'll hold him back.'
Talon did not need further prompting as he stood, adjusting his grip on Phaerna as he did so. "I'll call once we agree on a time. Thanks" he said, before gratefully leaving the office, happy to be able to -breathe- again. As nice as the office was, there was simply not enough room in it for two normal people and The Hulk.
That hadn't been so bad, he decided....well, 'not bad' meaning Phaerna hadn't been taken away and his head hadn't ended up squashed. For now, though, all he wanted was to go home as he strode out toward the waiting room.
"Zhane? C'mon, we're leaving." he called to his son.
"Aww, already?" he complained. He was having fun! Giving a sigh, he turned to the little girl. "I gotta go now, I'll try and come back sometime, though."
"Zhane..." Talon said, a tone of warning creeping into his voice.
"Com-ing!" he called back, hopping to his feet and racing off after his dad.

"Hey da-ad!!" Zhane called from his bedroom, making Talon look up from his book in annoyance. A half hour to himself....that's all he wanted. Just one goddamned half hour... "DAD!"
"What??" he barked back.
"C'mere! Something's wrong with Bonnie!"
Talon hesitated and then, reluctantly, laid down his book and stalked out of the office toward his son's room. That ******** guinea pig. He didn't know why he'd ever let the kids talk him into letting them have it, but it had been nothing but trouble since it had arrived. There was very little keeping him from grabbing up its entire smelly pellet-infested terrarium and heaving it out the damn window. Let that shaggy finger-biting nightmare fend for itself.
When he reached the doorway, he was greeted by both Zhane and Phaerna crowded around the glass tank peering inside at the unmoving ball of gray-white fluff. Gently shooing them out of the way, the ijiuo hunkered down to have a look himself.
"She won't wake up." Zhane explained from where he'd moved off to the side as he tapped the glass with one fingertip. "She's been laying there all morning."
Talonfaust didn't even need to take off the lid to know that the guinea pig inside was quite dead. From what, god only knew...maybe it had finally tried to come to terms with what a horrible little monster it was and had given itself an anurism. He looked to the two pairs of green eyes watching him expectantly and vented a sigh. These were eyes that had never seen or had to understand death before and, lucky him, it looked like he would get to tell them all about it.
"Iz she seeping?" Phaerna inquired, reaching up to idly scratch at her cheek.
"No, Phae, she's dead." Talon replied. The children exchanged a confused look and then looked directly back at their father.
"Dead?" Zhane asked.
"Dead." Talon confirmed, reaching up to unhook the screen lid from the top of the aquarium and....hoo god, he didn't want to touch the damn thing's corpse...!!
This is all in the name of education... he reminded himself, delving a hand into the cedar chips and fishing out Bonnie's rigid husk. The cold flesh and fur felt absolutely loathesome and made his skin crawl as he offered the dead guinea pig out to the kids. Zhane and Phaerna, still not understanding, approached without hesitation for a closer look.
"How come she's all stiff?" Zhane inquired, venturing a finger out to prod at Bonnie with.
"That happens when something dies." Talon explained. "Its--well, you've watched TV. You've seen what its like when people die in movies, right?"
Zhane thought for a moment and then nodded. "Yeah, they turn see-through and keep walking around but nobody else can see them."
"....no." Talon sighed. Well, so much for making his job easier. "When something dies, Zhane, that means....it isn't alive anymore. Its like going to sleep forever and never waking up. You don't eat, you don't breathe, you don't talk, you don't move." Zhane furrowed his brow, trying to wrap his mind around this influx of information.
"Why would anybody want to do that?" he asked.
"Nobody wants to die." Talon paused and then relented. "Well...some people want to die, but MOST people don't."
"Bon-neeee...." Phaerna said quietly, reaching out to touch the guinea pig. "Bon-neeeeee....'ake up..."
"Then how come they do?" Zhane asked, confused.
"They don't really get much of a choice in the matter. Some people get really old and their bodies get too weak to work anymore, some people get really sick and something in them breaks and stops working, and some people have accidents that kill them."
"Did Bonnie have an accident?"
"I don't know...what did you feed her last night?" Talon inquired, laying his ears back slightly.
"She threw up some of her kibble so I thought she needed some seltzers in her water to make her stomach calm down." Zhane informed him. Talon blinked and fought the urge to slap his forehead.
"Then yes. She had an accident." he muttered, moving to get up. He wanted to put the dead rodent in a plastic bag or SOMETHING. Anything so he wasn't directly touching her anymore.
"So she's gonna stay like that forever?" Zhane asked, following his father into the kitchen with Phaerna bringing up the rear.
"Yes." he nodded, opening the pantry with his free hand and fumbling out an empty plastic shopping sack in which he gratefully deposited the guinea pig. .
"What're we gonna do with her, then?"
"Well, we can bury her out back, I guess....you two can make her a gravemarker and decorate it."
"BURY her?" Zhane exploded in disbelief.
"That's what you do with people when they die." Talon explained, trying to think of a graceful way of explaining it other than the obvious because if we don't, she'll stink up the entire damned house "Its so they won't be disturbed. Laying them to rest....its respectful."
"Yeah but what about the worms??"
"Eh?"
"Wouldn't the worms come and bother you?"
"That's not--" he broke off, realizing this was going nowhere. "....something for you to think about, I guess." He squeezed the air out of the bag and twisted it three times before knotting it. There. That was as good of a death shroud as she was going to get, provided by the generous people at Albertsons.
"When're we gonna bury her?" his son asked, peering at the near-meaningless hump in the plastic wrapping.
"Now, if you like..." Talon replied with a slight shrug. He hoped Zhane did, really...the sooner he got Bonnie out of the house, the better. The kids were actually taking this better than he thought they were going to. No theatrics, no tears, that must have meant that he and Yeande were doing -something- right... "Or we could wait until your mother gets home."

Dear Diary,
Dad explained this whole 'death' thing to me and Phae, I know, but I don't really get it. Or like it. Bonnie was A-OK last night. She was squeaking and jumping around in her cage like nobody's business and then today, boom. Just gone. Never coming back. It happened out of nowhere.
Dad says everything eventually dies. That means me, Phae, him, and mom too. He said some people can die if they get really sick like Bonnie did after she ate those seltzer tabs, or they can die if they have a bad accident, but most people just die after they get too old. I asked him how long we would all be around and he said he didn't know. He said humans end up living anywhere from seventy to eighty years and that its a really long time.
It doesn't seem very long to me, though. And we're not humans either. What if we don't even get to live that long? Dad says not to worry about it, but I can't help it. I don't think I want to die. It seems like such a waste to be fine one minute and then have to lay still forever. Its like a permanent time out except you never get to come out of the corner and go back to watching TV.
I wonder if there's a way not to die. I tried asking mom and dad, but they said they thought the topic was getting old for the night and that it was upsetting Phae. I think maybe it might have been upsetting THEM, though.
They said we could go get a new guinea pig if me and Phae really wanted one, but I don't think I do anymore...

"H'lo?" Zhane asked, poking his head into the kitchen. He could still smell the aftermath of breakfast as the aroma of coffee and the sweet tang of cereal still permeated the air. Karma was seated at the table, looking through that morning's paper, but looked up at the sound of his voice.
"Zhane! Hi!" she smiled, absently folding the paper closed. "Whatcha need?"
"Um..." he rubbed the back of his neck and shifted his weight awkwardly. "I kinda need to ask you something." he admitted.
"Oh?" her ears perked up. "Well go ahead, that's what I'm here for."
"Its kinda personal." he said, fidgeting. Karma blinked, her brow knitting.
"Don't tell me your dad refused to explain the birds and the bees...." Zhane, in spite of himself, smiled.
"Nah, I already know all that stuff. He and mom checked out a video from the library and made me watch it."
"Oh, what -chickens-!" Karma chuckled. "They didn't even TRY to tell you on their own?"
"Yeah they tried...then they kept getting pissed at each other and decided the movie'd be easier." he explained.
"Don't say pissed." she absently corrected. It was reflex anymore.
"Sorry." The smile slipped away back into as much of a serious look as his young face could summon, making him look painfully like his father. "But anyway, that's not what I wanted to ask."
"Right." she nodded, gesturing at the chair across from herself. "What's on your mind?" Zhane didn't answer immediately as he ventured across the kitchen and climbed into the offered chair, situating himself comfortably before continuing.
"I wanted to ask you about....um....about before."
"Before?" Karma repeated, confused.
"Yeah. Before Mom and Dad were here, I mean."
"How much before are we talking?" already she was wracking her brain. It was honestly hard to remember what life was like before the house had been filled with people.
"I just wanna know where they came from."
"Oh...! You mean they didn't tell you?" the foxcoon asked, arching a brow. Zhane shook his head in the negative.
"Mom says that she doesn't remember and Dad says he doesn't want to talk about it."
"Somehow that doesn't surprise me." Karma sighed, shaking her head. "Its not some big dark secret, Zhane, its just...weird." The boy's earfins expanded a bit as his eyes focused on hers, ready to hear whatever she wanted to tell him. "Okay....awhile back when it was just me and Dave, and I could get away with having little things around the house that wouldn't get broken or eaten, I was big into collecting. At one point, I found these statues at a thrift store..."
"What kind of statues?" he inquired, green eyes glowing with interest.
"Dragon statues. They were carved out of some sort of stone. It looked like granite, but it was such strange colors. Your dad's was blue and veined with white and your mom's was black with little flecks of gold and purple in it." Zhane's eyes stole briefly down to the mottling of blue and purple on his fingertips, but he said nothing. "They looked like they might have been incense holders or something, since they both had little scoops carved out of them in about the same place. The guy at the thrift store said that they had been part of a big lot of things someone had dropped off a week ago and that he wasn't sure what price to put on them since they didn't seem to come from any collections or have any specific origin. They DID have nice craftsmanship, though, and he said that since he wasn't sure if the stone they were carved from was precious or not, he would let them go at twenty dollars apiece."
"Twenty DOLLARS?" Zhane asked, eyes flying wide. To a child who rarely had even a dollar in his possession, it seemed like a fortune.
"Yup." she nodded. "I thought that was kind of pricey for knick-knacks, but he was firm on it. I was going to say no at first, but then I remembered Christmas was coming and I hadn't gotten anything for Youko yet..."
"So you bought both?"
"That's right. I kept the blue statue and I gave the black one to Youko as a present. It was probably not until about mid-January that your dad was born, though." her look of amusement faded into one of thoughtfulness as she steepled her index fingers. "I'm STILL not sure what happened. I went to bed with a blue statue on my mantle and woke up at three in the morning to a very confused and disoriented naked guy stumbling around in my living room." Zhane couldn't help himself and dissolved into giggles at this mental image. "Laugh all you want, but it scared the crap out of me." she told him, also chuckling.
"Dad probably thought you were his mom, huh?" Zhane questioned, finding this all too amusing as his legs swung idly on the chair
"Oh GOD no." Karma snorted. "He was half-panicked, pissed off, and didn't know which way was up. He came after me because he thought *I* was responsible for whatever had happened somehow and I clocked him in the head with the TV remote. I would have called the cops if I hadn't realized he was just scared."
"Dad was -scared-....?" Zhane inquired, voice hushed with awe.
"Your dad's not the unwavering wall of masculinity he pretends to be, kiddo. You should've seen him when he found out he and your mother were having you. He holed up in his room for days looking like somebody told him the bomb was about to go off."
"Because I was an accident."
"Oh Zhane, no....nonono...." Karma's ears wilted. She hadn't meant to give him THAT impression...even though it was true. That wasn't something a kid needed to carry around on his shoulders.
"Nah, its okay." he said with a dismissive wave of his hand. "I'm just collecting stuff to use when I get old and write my book."
"Write your--" she sighed and shook her head. Whatever. "Anyway, your mother was born about a month later in pretty much the same way. Apparantly she was much calmer than your father about things and simply accepted all that had happened. I didn't know what to do with Talon any more than Youko knew what to do with Yeande...I mean, these were total strangers that were suddenly living in our houses that we knew nothing about at all. We ended up deciding to let them stay, if only because we agreed it would be unfair to turn them loose in a world they knew nothing about and had nothing in."
"And then they fell in love and the rest is history, right?" Zhane said, not really wanting to get into the mushy stuff.
"Heh...pretty much. You don't wanna hear about all that anyway." She had honestly been hoping he wouldn't want to....she didn't want to recount the months of not-so-subtle rutting and bitching that had gone on between Talon and Yeande prior to Zhane's conception.
"So how come I didn't come from a statue?" the child then asked.
"Well, your mother and father didn't have parents. They just kind of....are, I guess. But they were both YOUR parents, so you didn't need one."
"But where did their statues come from?" he pressed.
"You're just full of questions today, aren't you? What brought this on?" Karma asked, furrowing her brow.
"Nothin'." he shrugged. "I just wanna know."
"Well there had to have been something. Usually you're not THIS curious."
"Its just..." he bit his lip and fidgeted in his seat. "Bonnie died yesterday."
"Aww...your sister's guinea pig? I'm sorry..."
"Yeah." he shrugged faintly, having already gotten over it. "Anyway, it kind of bugged me when it happened so mom decided maybe I needed to read a couple of books about dying so I would understand it better and took me to the library last night. I decided I wanted to see what the computers had to say about me and mom and dad, and I couldn't find anything about ijiuos. So I went and looked for books instead and I couldn't find anything in there either. Not even in the books about dragons." He fixed the foxcoon with a befuddled look. "Why is that?"
"Because I don't think ijiuo are a real species." Karma explained gently. "Your mother and father didn't know what to call themselves or what they were, and they invented their own title for it.
"So you mean we're the only ones?" Zhane asked, looking upset.
"You might be, Zhane." she nodded.
"In the whole WORLD??" he squeaked. That seemed impossible. The world was a big, giant, huge place! How could he, Yeande, and Talon be the ONLY ones?
"Could be." Karma said again, really not sure what to tell him. Damn it, this was supposed to be his parents' job. "Are you all right?" she asked, though knew he clearly wasn't at the moment. His eyes were wide and hunted-looking as his mind furiously tried to wrap its mind around this latest bit of information. "Zhane? Do you want some juice or something?"
He shook his head vaguely in the negative and then slid out of his chair. "I'm gonna go watch TV."
"Okay." she seemed relieved to hear this and reached out to ruffle his hair. "Be good, okay?"
"Kay." he said, turning and walking out of the kitchen without further ado. Karma listened to his retreating footsteps pass through the living room, down the hallway, and then heard the soft click of his door's latch as it closed. So much for watching TV, she guessed, with a sigh. For a moment, she almost went after him and then decided against it. If he were HER son, maybe, but it wasn't her place to meddle at this point. That was for his mother and father to deal with.

Meeting Luna
"C'mon, Zhane, its a shot, not the end of the world..." Kendall sighed, holding the door open with one arm and flicking his tail impatiently as he waited for the younger boy to enter the GMFC.
"How come they call it a booster shot anyway?" Zhane grumped as he stuffed his hands in his pockets and reluctantly sidled into the clinic, his wings tensing a bit in the air-conditioned lobby.
"Because they inject it into you so hard that it boosts you straight up to the ceiling." Kendall replied non-chalantly, already grabbing Zhane's arm before he could bolt back out the door, snickering as he hauled him toward the sitting area. "Because it gives your immune system a boost so you don't get sick every time you go outside, that's all." he explained.
"But I DON'T get sick every time I go outside..." Zhane argued. Ordinarily he was pretty compliant, but the idea of sitting still while someone jabbed a needle in his arm didn't sit well with him.
"Yeah, not NOW, but then someday you'll get stung by a bee, and BAM! You're gonna spend the rest of your life in a plastic bubble wearing a nightgown." Kendall countered.
Zhane opened his mouth to retalliate, found he had no argument for this mental image, and shuddered slightly. The idea of never going outside again was enough to make him agreeable. For now. Keeping a wary eye on Kendall, he sat down and grabbed for a magazine.
Stupid booster shots.... Luna's head tilted as the pair entered the clinic. Two unfamiliar people... both upside-down. Well. Right-side-up, to be precise. It was she who was upside down.
Feet on the floor, back on the chair-back? Bah. It just wasn't as comfortable as having her head on the floor and her legs resting on the back of the chair, with her legs crossed at the ankles. Her skirt was frilly enough to cover everything her mother warned her to keep covered in public (Or even in the house), so it wasn't like she was doing anything wrong, anyway.
Shots, was it? Luna smiled faintly, holding out one arm. There was a roll of gauze pressed against her inner elbow, held by a bright pink band-aid. It couldn't be any worse than having blood drawn, and it didn't even hurt all that much.
Just like a mosquito bite.
Right? She punctuated her thoughts with that one projected word.
Zhane rifled through the magazine in pensive silence for a moment, the only sound passing between the two boys being the sound of paper shifting.
"Look, it wasn't MY idea, okay?" Kendall sighed. "Your mom called me this morning and asked if I'd mind bringing you here because she was going shopping with Dad and Envy."
More silence and three more pages turned.
"I'D rather be home playing Jaws, if I could have it my way. Its my day off." he continued before a flash of pink caught the corner of his eye and he turned his head, realizing they were not alone as he eyed the upside-down girl sitting by herself in one of the chairs.
"Hey," Kendall smiled, flexing his fingers at her in greeting. "Didn't see ya there."
Zhane looked up, blinking at Ken and then turned his head in the direction of whom he was addressing. Wow, somebody HIS age. That didn't happen very often these days. His reservations about the shot momentarily forgotten, Zhane likewise smiled at Luna.
Hello! Luna grinned widely and waved her arm awkwardly, her position making it difficult for her to fully wave hello.
You have to see the doctor too?
"Yeah..." Zhane sighed, his face going gloomy again. "I've gotta hold still and let him stick me with a needle."
"Booster shot, kiddo..." Kendall corrected him, catching him in a playful headlock and noogeying him, though he relented quickly when the younger boy didn't put up much of a struggle.
Not bothering to straighten his touseled hair, Zhane's eyes fell to the small bandage on Luna's arm and he winced.
"Aw man, they got you too?" he asked, trying to sound sympathetic though his eyes were suddenly aglow with curiousity as though he was asking a soldier how he lost his leg. "Was it bad? How big was the needle?"
Different! Luna shook her head from side to side, the smile not leaving her face. Different needle for different things. I got a rubber band around this arm and it SQUEEZED and that hurt more than the needle. Her feet kicked slightly as she considered the ordeal.
Not so bad. They had to take some blood for some tests. Your needle will be different. Just a little stick in the arm for a second.
"A rubber band?" Zhane questioned, and then turned to Kendall accusingly "You didn't say anything about a rubber band!"
"They're not going to use one, that's why. Now settle...you sound like your dad." Kendall muttered, having picked up a Highlights For Children to leaf through.
Deciding Luna was infinately more interesting company than Kendall at the moment, Zhane got up from his seat and relocated closer to the pink-and-purple young lady and plumped down a couple of seats away from her.
"What kind of tests?" he questioned, looking her over as his tail lashed slightly with intrigue. "Do they give it back afterward?" Obviously Zhane and doctor's offices weren't well-acquainted after he had grown beyond being an infant.
"My name's Zhane, by the way." he offered, realizing he hadn't yet. "Sorry, I'm just kinda out of it right now. Ken didn't tell me what we were coming here for till we got to the front door."
"Because it would've been that much harder to wrestle you out the door, that's why." Kendall put in, not looking up from his magazine.
It's different, Luna emphasized, biting her lip in thought. And I don't really know what they're for. Mama said the government needed to know some things about me that are in my blood.
Finally deciding the chair was getting a little TOO uncomfortable for her liking, Luna slowly slid downward until her legs were suddenly below her head, and she was holding onto the seat bottom to regain her sense of up and down.
My name's Luna Edae. It's nice to meet you, Zhane!
"Nice to meet you too, Luna!" Zhane grinned, deciding he'd asked enough questions about needles and blood. Somehow, it didn't feel polite, despite the fact nobody had told him to shush yet. "I hardly ever get to meet other kids...we live kinda far from here."
"Cuz your dad's a creepy hermit." came the peanut gallery of Kendall once more.
Zhane rolled his eyes and opted not to answer. "Do you come here a lot?"
Luna tilted her head to the side, studying Zhane intently. Well, he certainly LOOKED different, that was sure. She idly wondered if people with his kind of ears and tail licked each other hello, as well?
She opted not to risk it.
Kindasortamaybe. An emphatic nod. There are good puzzles here. Jo and I come here because I like the puzzles. She paused briefly. Jo's my guardian. He's on the roof right now. He has to stay close or else he gets really upset, but he didn't want to be TOO close when I had my blood taken. My hurt hurts him a little, and he probably would've been all like-- "RARRRRR!" The last part, she said aloud, bringing her hands upward and mimicking a monster's claws.
Zhane looked briefly at the ceiling as she explained, as though that might help him see this elusive Jo. All he saw was light fixtures, however. At her massive "RAR" he jolted a bit and then laughed.
"I live with my mom and dad....and my little sister." he explained. "Dad doesn't really like people so we only go out when we have to...it really sucks."
He swung his legs idly from the chair, his wings resituating themselves into a more comfortable position on his back. "That's why when I get old enough, I'm gonna be an explorer and see all kinds of places and people."
Another headtilt. You have a little sister too? I have a big little sister!
Luna giggled quietly, pacing in front of Zhane. Reeeeeeeeeally? Are you going to see other planets, too?
"We adopted my little sister." he nodded. "Her mom couldn't keep her or something...I dunno...I was too little to remember and Dad gets mad whenever I ask him about it and says it'll upset Phae."
At her question, Zhane's eyes seemed to sparkle. Other planets...? He hadn't even thought of that. Frankly, he would've been happy just to explore that thicket of trees that was just beyond the park...
"Wow, maybe!" he grinned. his wings vibrating with excitement. "That'd be awesome! What about you? What're you gonna do when you're older?"
Ohhhhh... Luna frowned slightly, clasping her hands behind her back. Perhaps it would be better to focus on the more fascinating topic at hand.
I don't know! She furrowed her brow. I never thought about it, really. Maybe I'll... "Hmmmm." Maybe I'll help people. Maybe I can teach! And... and maybe I can be an explorer, too! Someone who talks to new peoples and makes peace and friendship and... She paused as she struggled to come up with the word. A diplomat!
"Like the ones on TV!" Zhane put in, clearly enjoying this conversation. That actually sounded pretty cool too, but he was less about peacemaking and more about poking around in new places he knew nothing about. "You can talk to the people, and I'll explore the caves and the mountains and stuff!"
"Zhane Breslin?"
The mood of the happy conversation was shattered as a nurse appeared in the doorway of the waiting area, a clipboard hugged to her chest as she looked between the two boys there.
"That's your cue, kid." Kendall smiled over the top of his Highlights.
Zhane felt the bottom drop out of his stomach as he eyed the nurse warily.
"Um...yeah?"
"Follow me, please." she said with a winning smile, beckoning him closer. To Zhane, it looked like she was trying overly-hard NOT to look like she was going to jab him with a needle at the earliest opportunity.
He gave a deep-chested sigh and looked to Luna helplessly. "Guess I gotta go..." he groaned.
Luna giggled behind one hand, considering Zhane's offer. So that means I get to go with you when you explore? It's a deal!
Her attention snapped to the nurse as she called for Zhane, and then back to her new friend.
Be strong, okay? It's only a second, okay?
With that, she waved slowly. I'll see you another time, okay! Hopefully when we're not getting poked. With a reassuring nod, she retreated to a half-finished puzzle left in the corner of the clinic. I'll be right here. Good luck!
"Thanks," he said, offering her a half-smile before trudging off to meet his fate like a man about to go forth on death row.
"Don't worry," Kendall called after him. "I'll tell everybody you went out without a blindfold. You'll be a hero."
Had it not been for the presense of the nurse, Zhane might have reacted again like his father and presented Kendall with a one-fingered salute. Instead, he merely continued his trudge out of the room as the nurse swept the door closed after them.
Kendall quietly made note that from now one when Talon and/or Yeande called to ask him to drive Zhane anywhere near this place, he was going to conveniently be "on his way out the door to work".

The house had certainly seen better days. He imagined at one point it was likely a summer cabin someone had founded some fond memories upon, but now it was what most people would consider junk.
It sat nestled in the backwoods, partially obscured by overgrowth, a sagging and lopsided parody of what it had once been. To most people it might have seemed creepy, but to Zhane, it seemed like opportunity.
The ijiuo's footfall creaked quietly on the rotting floorboards as he made his way through the front hall. Moss now grew on the walls, and a small sickly-looking pine sapling had found its way up through a crack between the boards, nurtured by the meager light that filtered in through the windows.
It was not what most people would consider a hobby -- skulking around in abandoned ruins of buildings -- but he found it thrilling to set foot in places no one else had been in a very long time. In a way, it was like discovering them all over again.
"This was probably the kids' room...." he muttered aloud to no one in particular as he played his flashlight beam over the first empty husk of a bedroom he stopped at. There was nothing in it that would betray that it WAS a kids' room, but it was fun to pretend. The paint was yellowed and peeling from the walls, and the carpet was little more than a few ratty brown strands, the bulk of it having been stolen by various animals for their nests.
"And over here was where the parents slept..." he went on, shining the beam into the room across the way which, for all intents and purposes, looked identical to the other, save for the few abandoned pieces of fast food wrappers on the floor and the scrawled white graffiti on the wall reading "ARUN WUZ HEER".
He played the beam over it and shook his head "You're a scream, Arun..." he muttered, clicking off the flashlight momentarily to turn around and head to the end of the hallway where one door remained.
"And this..." he said, pausing to think up a good story for it as he clicked the beam back on. "....was where they closed up the dog at night because he got into stuff if they left him out." he decided, reaching out to nudge it open with his fingertips...
...only to be met by a pair of large glowing eyes on the other side.
Giving a cry of surprise he turned to run, his ankles tangling with one another and spilling him to the floor with a thud. From behind him there was a startled bray and a thunder of footfall all around him as something large leapt over him, and then hauled itself full speed for the door.
Zhane looked up in time to see the fleeting white-tailed rump of a deer as it skittered into the brush, gone as quickly as it had come.
"Jeezus CHRIST..." he muttered, from where he laid, his heart thundering in his chest as he pulled his limbs beneath himself to regain his feet. Fetching his flashlight from where it had fallen nearby, its beam shining stupidly at the wall, he focused it into the room the "visitor" had just departed from.
It quickly became apparent as to how it was the animal had closed itself up in a bedroom, though, as the entire back wall of the room had collapsed, leaving a wide enough space for whatever wanted to to wander in and investigate. The deer had probably been just as confused as he had.
Venting a breathless, sheepish chuckle at his own spazziness, he leaned against the wall, reaching up to smooth a hand through his hair.
There was more to the place....he'd yet to investigate the basement, after all, but that would have to wait for another time, he decided. As most of his excursions went off without a hitch, he'd taken the deer's interruption to mean that he'd worn out his welcome for now.
Clicking off and pocketing the flashlight, the ijiuo headed back the way he'd come, stepping back out into the open canopy of the woods.
As time had gone by, he'd found himself most at home while -away- from home. It had begun with simple walks through the fields near the neighborood, and had graduated into something far more interesting as his wandering brought him deep into the woods to discover places such as this one.
Talon and Yeande had hated it at first and had warned him up and down of the dangers of such places. The terms "you could break your neck" and "it will cave in on your head" were used liberally, as were the more outlandish warnings of crazy homeless guys and rabid dogs.
The more they'd protested, though, the more he'd continued to go out, sans asking their permission. Maybe it WAS a little dangerous....but maybe that was exactly what he'd been looking for -- a little danger and seeing the unknown to spice up his otherwise-predictable life. Just because Talonfaust and Yeande seemed most content with maintaining an environment that was expected and controlled didn't mean that he had to exist there as well.
He breathed deeply of the tangy scent of the pine trees and cast a quick look at his wrist to examine the time. Five twenty-five....he winced as he realized he'd promised to be home no later than five. He was going to get it. Again.
"So what else is new...." he sighed aloud, breaking off at a brisk jog back toward the woods' end to head home.

Zhane waited for the computer to finish its startup before opening a text file which had begun as a documentation of his outings, but had become a sort of journal for himself. It was more secure, anyway, since Phae had found his childhood journal under his mattress and had asked Yeande to read it to her. Since then he'd been a bit reluctant to try keeping another. But the computer had what a written journal did not -- password protection. Flexing his fingers a bit to limber them, he began to type. I finally got a look at that cabin I wrote about last time. Outside, it looks like it just dropped down from Oz, inside it looks like its been abandoned for at least a few years. The forest is already trying to grow inside of it and everything.
Three bedrooms, two of them were vacant. The third turned out to be a surprise Deer-in-the-box that scared the s**t out of me. Nothing special other than that, though. Not even any interesting graffiti....just as long as we all know that Arun, in fact, was there (ha!)
I didn't get a look at the basement. I'd like to say I just noticed what time it was and had to run home, but that's a lie. I chickened out if you want the truth.
Provided dad's not still pissed at me tomorrow about being late for dinner, I might go back for take two.
I wish I knew what his problem was....its not like I'm going out doing drugs or robbing houses. I'm just....I dunno...LOOKING. I'm not hurting anything and he acts like its the worst damn thing in the world. He paused, realizing his teeth were clenched to the point that his jaw was trembling and lifted his hands from the keyboard to rub at his eyes. As he'd gotten older, it seemed the confrontations between himself and Talon had become more and more frequent. He'd been able to see his fault in them at first and accept blame, but anymore he'd come to accept it as par for the course that the 'fare' for going out by himself for awhile was coming home to a lecture. The problem was he didn't understand WHY. The problem, at first, had seemed to be that his dad didn't think he was mature enough. He had attempted to remedy the issue by becoming more independent and proving that he was fine to make his own judgements about certain things....but if anything, that had seemed only to make matters worse. So, anymore, he felt as if he was stuck at square one. And he was quickly losing patience with it. Drawing a deep, calming breath, he returned his hands to the keyboard. Note to self: creek tomorrow. Bring camera. Saving the document, he closed it again and pushed back from the computer to get undressed for bed. One thing, at least, he knew for certain. If something didn't change for the better, and soon, he was going to go bananas.

It was nearly noon when a sharp knock at his door roused Zhane from his slumber, making him groan and shift onto his back as he blinked blearily in the noise's direction.
He instantly knew two things -- that this was not the pleasantly-shaded lakeside that his dreams had taken him to, and that he did NOT want to be awake to leave it.
Giving a muffled grunt, he turned over, yanking his pillow over his head as he screwed his eyes shut. Maybe, his half-awake mind told him, if he pretended really hard, the day would go away and forget about him.
"Zhane?" a voice said sharply through the wood as the knock repeated itself as he vented a sigh.
"I'm getting there." he called back as the door opened and Talon peered in at him.
"You've been in bed all morning." his father noted. "What time did you go to sleep?"
"I don't remember..." he said, letting go of the pillow and letting it slide off of his head as he realized getting back to sleep was not looking like so hot of a prospect at this point. Dammit...
For his part, Talon stood silently, the tip of his tail flicking in annoyance as he watched his son go through the waking process, recalling with some ire the days HE could stay in bed til all hours of the morning.
"I suggest, in the future, when you make plans, you don't stay up all night on that damned internet." he said, crossing his arms over his chest.
"What plans?" Zhane muttered, reaching clumsily for his alarm clock to steer it in a direction that he could better read its digits. In doing so, his fingers met with the weather-polished surface of the seashell on top of it which he must have, at some point, placed there before sleeping. Picking it up to look at it once more, he forgot to be annoyed at the situation....but that was all right. It seemed Talon was more than capable of being annoyed enough for the both of them.
"Your mother talked to you yesterday about it. Karma called and asked to borrow you to help clean out her attic this afternoon, which you, I am told, agreed to." he said with the same grated patience he once spoke to people on the phone at his old job.
"Oh, right...." Zhane replied, eyes transfixed on the shell and no longer giving his father his full attention.
"'Oh right.' " he parroted, trying not to hit his head against the wall. The books had not been kidding when they said teenagers were a creature all their own. Zhane had, seemingly overnight, gone from a happy, inquisitive, child to being a moody, independent adolescent.
It wasn't so much that Talon begrudged him his love for exploring, it was that Zhane, quite simply, never said where he was going. If he said he was taking a walk "down to the creek", what that translated into was "I will be at whatever undisclosed location I choose on this side of the mountains". There was no way to reach him, and no way to FIND him, people were just simply left to guess when he might be coming back.
Yeande had repeatedly told him that it was all part of Zhane getting older and discovering the world for himself. He got that. He understood it just fine. That didn't mean he had to LIKE it.
"Just...get dressed. I'll drive you over."
"I can drive myself." Zhane offered, sitting up to swing his legs over the side of the bed and fish his jeans out of the rumpled heap they'd fallen in with the rest of his clothes.
"I'LL drive you over." Talon reiterated more forcefully. "You just got your license, I don't want you upending yourself against a mailbox in a car I'm still paying for."
The words made him feel an inward pang of relief that Talon hadn't discovered he'd borrowed the Camaro to make his trip last night. He wasn't going to win any prizes for his driving, but he liked to think he had enough of a handle on it by now that getting behind the wheel with him didn't feel like playing Twisted Metal or anything.
"All right." he heard himself say with resignation, struggling into his shirt. After the happy note last night had ended on, he wasn't in the mood for a fight today. As he straightened the hem, his eyes stole to the computer and he chewed his bottom lip in thought.
Had she written since last night, he wondered?
"Let's get going." Talon said, moving to leave the room. "I need to be at the studio in an hour."
"Sec. Gonna check my mail real quick." he said, moving for the computer desk.
"NOW, Zhane."
He flinched at the sharp tone of voice and shot a dirty look at the back of his father's head, but sighed and followed, grabbing up his shoes from the floor as he went.
Maybe Karma would let him use HER computer...

I met Nani last night. I guess maybe mom might be right about me eventually getting lonely by spending so much time by myself in the woods, because its all I thought about all day.
I'm not going to say where we went or what we saw, because I promised her I wouldn't, and because I still don't entirely trust that somebody else isn't gonna get into this log and read things they shouldn't be reading.
I AM going to say that she wasn't what I was expecting her to be at all (and I don't mean that in a bad way, either). Hopefully she feels similar. I really can never tell if I'm making a good impression or not.
I spent the day at Aunt Karma's helping clean. Dad bitches that we have too much stuff in the attic, but he's apparently never seen hers before. It looked like Area 51 up there...boxes and boxes of stuff and she had no idea what half of it was.
It took all afternoon just to get it all downstairs and into the garage, and I guess tomorrow I'm going back over to help sort through it all and figure out what's getting thrown out and what's staying. She says she trusts me more than she trusts Kendall to do it because he'd just want to keep everything.
Sure....I've got nothing better to do than poke around through boxes of baby clothes and old magazines, I guess.
Bleh.
I've decided to keep the seashell here on my desk. I enjoy looking at it...

"I've got....more books over here. How about you?" Karma asked, standing on her tiptoes to reach the bottom of the large cardboard crate as she rifled through the stacks of musty-smelling paperbacks, most of which she'd never read nor had intention of reading.
"Toys again." Zhane said, picking up one that resembled a plastic storybook and opening it curiously. It was littered with plastic buttons with various pictures on them, which he prodded at until he was rewarded with a tinny male voice stating matter-of-factly "Dad...danced with....a funny....worm....in my spaghetti"
It was so incredibly off that it startled him into laughter as the foxcoon's ears flattened.
"I remember why that thing is in the attic." she said. "Raven and Ken drove me NUTS with it."
"What the hell IS it?"
"Its like mad libs for toddlers." she explained, heaving an armload of books out of the box and pitching aside the ones that didn't interest her. "You push a button in each row and it makes a random sentence out of it. The twins thought every damn thing it spouted was instant comedy."
Zhane pushed the plastic book closed again, still smiling. He could definitely see the appeal for a smaller kid....hell, HE'D gotten a kick out of it and he was what most people would consider way too old to appreciate it.
"Is it all toys in that box?" she asked, as he set it aside.
"Yeah, I think so." he replied, peering back into the contents and seeing only colorful plastic and rubber.
"All right, go ahead and put them on the junk side."
He nodded, getting up to give the crate a shove to the left side of the garage (the "junk side", for now) before grappling the next box off of the massive pile of them to tear open. They'd been at it for hours and it still looked like they'd barely made a dent in what needed sorting, he realized with an inward groan.
Karma must have been feeling it too, as she half-heartedly leafed through one of the books, her ringed tail giving an agitated flick, before she closed it.
"You know what, Zhane? Let's break for lunch." she said, tossing it back into the box.
"You sure?" he asked, his fins pricking. She nodded in reply, standing to stretch a bit.
"You've been a big help, and you haven't complained this entire time. So what would you like on your pizza?"
He lit up instantly, the box he had half-opened momentarily forgotten. Pizza was one of the things that rarely found its way into Talon and Yeande's home unless there was absolutely nothing else in the house to make and neither of his parents felt like going out to get anything.
"Ground beef and black olives?"
"A man after my own heart." she chuckled. "Go get washed up, I'll order."
Not having to be told twice, he dropped the box to the garage floor and headed back into the house. Though he had last lived here when he was very young, Zhane still knew the house well enough to navigate it without trouble, and followed the hallway to the downstairs washroom.
As he cracked the faucet and placed it his hands under it to rinse away the grime and dust of sifting through the artifacts of years past, a slight wave of nostalgia washed over him. The reason this room was a 'washroom' and not a 'bathroom' was because it was no longer possible to bathe in it, despite the fact there was a tub directly behind him with its curtain drawn.
The reason, if he recalled correctly, was that Raven had managed to do "something" to the pipes when she'd been a child. Karma had never divulged details, only that it had involved a Wacky Wallwalker, a wrench, and two weeks groundation.
As he lathered his hands with soap and rinsed them, Zhane felt his eye drawn to the closed curtain, wondering if it had ever been fixed. Shaking the water from his fingertips, he took hold of the obscuring sheet of linen, pulling it aside....
....only to find the tub filled with water. He felt himself blink in puzzlement. As he watched, he became aware of a small, blue, something bobbing in the shallow depths of the tub. It did not appear to be alive, and moved only when the water did.
As he peered closer, he realized it was an egg of some sort....a very ODD-looking egg, at that. It was a deep blue in color, and the size of a melon with odd fin-like appendages on either side of it.
"You raising sea monkeys in here?" he called out into the hallway. There was a pause, and then shuffling footsteps in his direction.
"Am I what?" Karma asked, poking her head into the doorway, and then letting her gaze settle on the tub. "....oh. Hell, I'd forgotten all about that." she sighed.
"What is it?" Zhane inquired as she reached past him to pull the plug on the drain, letting the water swirl out of the tub.
"Well, I was told that it was going to hatch at some point." she explained, watching as the egg settled on the bottom of the basin as its water left it, its once-billowing fins becoming damp mats beneath it. "....but its been over a year and its not done much of anything. I think its kaput."
As she spoke, Zhane kneeled and prodded a finger hesitantly at the egg, finding its surface had a cold jelly-like texture to it. He'd never seen anything like it before.
"What're you gonna do with it?" he inquired, venturing a cupped hand beneath it to roll it into his grasp as he lifted it from the tub.
"Throw it out, I guess, why?" she asked, eying the way he was raptly examining it. "Don't tell me you want it...?"
"Could I?" he asked, turning it over carefully in his grasp, careful not to let his fingers rupture or punch through the membranous shell. If it was dead, or rotten, it didn't give any indication of being so.
....in a way, it reminded him very much of the mermaid lake Nani had shown him.
"Zhane, why? What on earth would you DO with it?"
"I dunno. Its just really neat-looking" he shrugged. "Put it in a tank? I think we still have Bonnie's somewhere..."
She shook her head in response, clearly not understanding why he'd want a dud egg.
"If you really want it that bad, I guess...." Some kids had geodes as awesome conversation pieces on their shelves. Apparently Zhane had defunct fishspawn on his....whatever made him happy. "Here, gimme..." she said reaching out for it as he handed it over with slight reluctance. "I'll stick it in a bag and you can take it home with you later, okay?"
He opened his mouth to thank her, but was interrupted as she continued.
"And if your father asks where it came from, do NOT tell him I gave it to you. Its been a little over a year now since he's accused me of trying to corrupt you or his life in general, I'd like to try for two."
"Heh....I doubt he'd even notice." Zhane said, betraying his annoyance on the matter with a lash of his tail. "He only comes looking for me when he wants to yell about something."
"Yeah, you're getting about that age." Karma nodded, making it unclear whether she was sympathizing with Talon or with Zhane more as she turned to pad back down the hallway, Zhane following after her. "Aside from your dad riding your case, anything else noteworthy going on? School? Job? Girlfriends?"
At the last query, he felt a flush rise to his cheeks as he shook his head.
"None of the above." he replied.
"Oh? Why not?" she questioned, looking briefly back at him.
Because I'm a spazz that likes to wander around in abandoned warehouses and willingly gets himself lost in the woods. Find me a girl who thinks that's hot... he thought wryly. "Would YOU wanna bring girls home to meet my dad?" he said instead, making her crack up laughing.
"Point." she told him as they entered the kitchen and she set the egg on the countertop, fishing under the sink for the box of garbage bags she used on the smaller kitchen trash can. As he watched, she went about the business of carefully wrapping it up for him as if it were a baby in swaddling blankets. "I think..." she said, tying off the top "....that you need to look at getting out on your own."
"Maybe." he shrugged. "Dunno where I'd go, though."
"Gaia's a big place. I'm sure if Raven and Kendall can find an apartment, you can find somewhere. I just think you and your dad are gonna bite each other's heads off eventually if you keep on like you are."
"At least then it'd be quiet." he snorted, making her smirk as she handed him the knotted bag.
"Its something to think about anyway." she told him.
"Yeah I guess..." he shrugged, gingerly taking the wrapped egg into his hands. "How much more sorting did you wanna get done today?"
"I might be done for the day, actually." she said, stretching a bit. "If I put my hand in one more cobweb, I think I'm gonna scream. You gonna need a ride home?"
"Probably. Dad never said what time he was getting off work."
"Okay, I can handle that." she said, even as the ring of the doorbell interrupted her, making her turn her head in its direction. "But first, I think you and I had a date with Dominoes."

He popped the tab on his soda with a hiss and leaned back in his chair to relax a moment. Finding Bonnie's old tank hadn't been hard....however, getting it dressed up to transform the former home of a dead guinea pig into the aquatic holding vessel for a weird egg had taken some work and a visit to the pet store. Nonetheless, Zhane had been pleased with the final outcome. Behind him on a cleared spot on top of his dresser, the water-filled tank hummed and bubbled quietly, glowing with purple light as, inside of it, the blue finned egg rested lazily on the gravel, moved by the occasional current. The tank was also populated by three goldfish he'd bought on a whim, which darted brainlessly about the tank, pausing occasionally and seeming to investigate the egg before continuing on with whatever fishy business they had. It was one hell of a coffin for what was most likely a dead egg, but for the moment, it looked nice...and putting it together had been a pleasant waste of an evening. As Zhane drank off the first swallow of his can of Sprite, he set it aside and double-clicked his messenger window, scanning its online occupants and finding himself a bit crestfallen not to see who he was looking for. No FairyImp today. Since their first meeting, he'd found he'd become eager for their nightly talks to the point that he'd counted on them as being part of his day-to-day routine. Not one to immediately assume the worst by her absence, he opened his Email program. From: blukirin @ duremware.com Subject: Hey there =)
Hi Nani,
You're probably busy with Seiji or out someplace as I write this, but just giving a heads up that I'm probably headed to bed soon. I wore myself out setting up a fish tank today (I'll tell you details later) and waited up a bit, but the soda's not helping tonight.
Was wondering if maybe you might be up for meeting again sometime? I think I've got a place in mind I can show you that you just might find interesting. If not, at least you'll get to see the kinds of places I end up spending my days in sometimes XD
Hope you have a good night, Zhane He had no sooner clicked 'send' than a chime sounded as an IM window popped up on his screen. His momentary swell of hope, however, was dashed as he read the name. xXxSeXXy4UxXx: hey QT ;x Got some new pics up. Check them out and more at My New SiteGiving an agitated sigh, he X'ed out the window, not even bothering to favor the nameless spammer with a reply. He pushed back from the desk, rising to stretch before he crossed the room to peer into the tank once more where exactly nothing had changed from when he'd checked it twenty minutes ago. The egg still bobbed and swayed gently, giving no indication of life. He watched it for what felt like a long time, captivated by something and not quite sure what. It seemed, to him, that the egg had become more vibrant since it had been placed in its new home. He'd been almost certain it had been a dark blue before, and now it was brighter, its surface swimming with swirls of opalescent color if the light caught it in the right way. Or maybe that was just the overhead light's doing. At length, he shook his head, propping open the lid as he fetched up a small canister of flakes, dropping in a pinch and watching the goldfish instantly jettison to the top to fight over them. He smiled a bit in spite of himself and cast one last look over his shoulder at the still-dormant computer monitor before reaching up to click off the aquarium's light. Ah well, maybe she'd at least get his note...
