As my first post to this guild (yay!) I've got a few contributions after reading six pages of this thread.
Pairings that make NO SENSE to me: Hiei/Botan, Hiei/Shizuru, Hiei/Yukina (ACK! eek ), Hiei/Kuwabara, Hiei/Keiko, Kurama/Yukina, Kurama/Botan, Kurama/Shizuru, Kurama/Kuwabara, Kurama/Karasu (damn, leave the boy alone), Yuusuke/Yukina, Yuusuke/Botan, Kuwabara/Keiko, Koenma/Hiei (XD).
As for pairings I do kind of like . . .
Hiei/Kurama . . . ech. It's ripped on mostly because it's almost never done well. I'm a personal fan, having watched the series and seen how they interact, but the way fanfiction writers carry it off makes me want to forswear reading altogether. >.< As for why I think it works in theory, I can't really say -- that's just a possible conclusion I came to.
Heh, Koenma/Yuusuke is hilarious if done right. I've seen it once or twice. I'm more a fan of this pairing as a one-sided deal on Koenma's part, given that Yuusuke has, as mentioned, a problem with authority.
Yuusuke/Kurama has to be my personal favorite, although once again it's usually done appallingly badly. I just think that those two characters have probably strangest and most intense emotional connection of whatever sort in the entire series. Oddly, I still like and respect the canon Yuusuke/Keiko pairing, even though I don't care for Keiko all that much. She's a little too preppy for my taste. But anyway. I digress.
Yuusuke/Hiei, in the right twisted circumstances and probably one-sided, has my attention. But only because I'm an angst whore, and this pairing is probably the most angst-ridden concept ever. I guess I would consider it not entirely out of the blue given a couple of canon conversations, but it would take an obscenely long time and a lot of development before it would be worth calling a "pairing". Not that I'm not willing to put in the time. xd
I suppose that's my take on YYH pairings in general, excepting Yuusuke/Keiko and possibly Kuwabara/Yukina: they'd all take a huge amount of work to do right, and some are probably downright impossible. But I'm a big believer in character development in fanfiction, which is bloody rare these days unfortunately, since it's pretty much the only thing that can take tiny little seedling possibilities and make them plausible. As the YYH characters stand on their own, fresh from the series, no pairings but the above two have any business being tossed out there.

I also hate KuramaHiei pairings where Kurama's demon spirit has left his human body, so the body turns human. Gender changes are not as simplistic as that. burning_eyes
HieiMukuro is not canon, though it's severely hinted at. But you can never really decipher what the relationship is, and I think it's meant to be open-ended.
Sorry I missed this.
I meant that Hiei had a possible straight relationship and most people
don't want to even talk about that.

Also, Younger Toguro/Yusuke. That's more than a little disturbing.
Oh yeah, and Sensui/Botan, Hagiri/Botan, and Mitarai/Botan. Yes, this was all in the same fanfic.

Well, some Mary Sue fics are okay when written with proper grammar (good for all stories wink ) and said Sue is not too fangirly
