Well gee that was rather rude. A lot of people don't know how to write music for their particular instrument. Drumming's easy because there is not a lot of theory involved, but when it comes to bells and what not, it's tricky. It takes many years to master the talent, and I don't think it's fair for you to come in here and say, "you all are not percussionists because you can't write music." If everyone could write music, there would be no legends like Mozart. You're being very short sighted.
While I will admit I am not the best mallet player in the entire world, I can play battery instruments with relative ease. It's not easy being a drummer, and most are cocky, but not stupid. I've never really had to play mallet instruments, as I did not learn "percussion" as stated through any conventional school system terms. I am a musician in that I can play other instruments outside the percussion realm.
This topic relates to the fact that many people do not feel that drummers/percussionists are real musicians unless they can play "another" instument. I take offense to this. The piano, my friends, is one of the foremost percussion instruments in the field. Where would music be without it?
I will be one to tell you that being a drummer is different than being a percussionist, but not on the ground started above because they are unfair. "Reading music" is the same for drummers as it is for any other instrument. You don't just fall out of your mother and know how to do it, and it does, in fact, require quite a bit of skill. You are entitled to your opinion, but that's not how I see it. So consider this a comment of disgust at your present attitude.

Maybe you were lucky and actually had a decent set if percussionist or drummers in your school. We had 2 in our history that qualified as percusionist and not drummers.
A oercussionist shoudl be able to read all music and know key signitiures. Drummers really only need to know meter and time signiture and how to care for the instrument.
I think your getting the wrong idea about me. Every one knows how to write music. if you can read it you can write it. Its supossed to be a basic part of every single band class the basics of theory and writing music.
If you know what nptes sound good together and where they are in the staff then you cna write for your insturment. Thats all.
No its not easy being a drummer and I dont wnat to be a drummer. Being a percussionist is just as difficult as it requires a skill that drummers dont nessicarily need.
I grew sick of the "drummers" in my highschool and I'm glad I can play more then one instrument for it. My expertise is in percussion simply because I have the most experinace with it.
They took percussion because it was "easy" and thus we an award winning highschool did horribly all year long.

Rhap-chan HelterSkelterX I don't know how many people in this guild are drummers. I started drumming with I was 4, which by all rights should've make it easier right? Yeah...so marching band music is in no way, shape, or form the same. Why can't there be more rudimental drummers out there?! ^_^ **waves** Greetings, fellow drummer! Though perhaps I should be called a xylophone addict. ^_^ That's my thing really. My boyfriend began his drumming career at the same age, though he's a set drummer mostly. Marching band music is evil and wrong (^^ kidding, but it's definitely hard). And there aren't many rudimental drummers out there because.... many "drummers" can't play rudiments! Like me! But at least I have an excuse, being a xylo addict. I'm glad someone made a topic for percussionists! Struggle on, my friend. I am a xylophone addict to! I love playing the marimba, vibes, and all the mallets instruments! Amazing! Do you play with four mallets? I did, and man did that mess with the hands majorly! But oh so much fun! Go percussion! heart biggrin

Its supossed to be a basic part of every single band class the basics of theory and writing music. If you know what nptes sound good together and where they are in the staff then you cna write for your insturment. Thats all. SO NOT TRUE. I can write lyrics, but not music, and I am no drummer sir. I have never had a theory class on writing music.... I can improv a little, but because I can't write music doesn't mean I can't be a percussionist! You can't type accurately, but that doesn't mean you can't use your computer well. dezidemon No its not easy being a drummer and I dont wnat to be a drummer. Being a percussionist is just as difficult as it requires a skill that drummers dont nessicarily need. Just because you don't want to be a drummer doesn't mean you need to look down on the rest of us non-music-writers. dezidemon They took percussion because it was "easy" and thus we an award winning highschool did horribly all year long. People do that for every instrument. The last chair clarinetists, the last chair trumpeters, last chair percussionists..... It is worse in the percussion section but not all drummers &/or percussionists are like this. AND FINALLY..... sorry if this upsets you, but your words upset us. Please try to understand. And let's move on now, shall we?

The Stevens Grip is annoying and the other grip I know is nearly impossible to manage octaves with...... But it is fun. ^_^

I don't know if I posted in here or not, but I'm going to, again. I play pretty much all the percussion instruments with at least a smidge of skill, except for the xylophone. GOD. I hate xylophone.. no offense to the Pit people.. sweatdrop But.. yeah. I played Bass in marching this year, and I will either be playing snare, cymbal, or bass for next year.. I really don't like cymbals, though. So I hope it's not that. Damn you'se.. freshman! stressed

elfymcflee Hookani Keiki Because our freshman were learing this year. (one senior [me] two new sophmores and 6 freshman). . . . we constantly got yelled at "LISTEN BACK" I think it's finally burned into their skulls that they need to listen back to the dl. stare At least next year we'll have a few good new vets. o man... we get yelled at to LISTEN BACK alll the time... well the pit does. this year we had a TON of freshman, but suprisingly they were very talented and awesome. our pit music for this show was simply awesome. most of them played four mallets for the first time. it was awesome. I try to listen back, but in Indoor, the person who counts off (I don't like her...) is in the front center, so we can't listen back unless we have the line behind us. I sometimes get yelled at to listen back, but it's as a section.

Sorry to interrupt, but does anyone have the sheet music to Super Mario Brothers? Just curious. I'm really not in the mood to take but I think three weeks to listen to it on my CD player and play it over and over again. Anyone got it? Keyboards? Mallets? Please? Even a piano part I will take and I can transfer it.

If you have trouble with this, PM me. The 2 notes together means play them both at once. ^_^ I wish I knew the rest of it for you.....
