Andarien's brow furrowed slightly. "Well, sure they take time to make, and it's really hard when there aren't any forges around to make the parts, but just doing the calculations to resize the gears wasn't hard. Maybe my first ones weren't as accurate as the ones I made after I apprenticed to a gear smith, but they worked."
Then he remembered to answer Eron's question. "And yes, do take one. I already made one for Nana and Ada and Miyuki and ... well, you get the idea." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Anyways, it'll be important if you're going to help keep watch at night or something. Besides that, you're one of our group now. We all share."
He grinned at Eron. "Go on. Pick one that you like."

That was really kind of the boy, and he did seem insistent. Looking back at the pocket watches he picked one where he could see the gears working inside the watch.
"Thank you," Eron smiled and felt he couldn't express how grateful he was, "These are all quite wonderful."

"Thanks," Andarien beamed. "I like making things, I just ... don't get much opportunity."
He shifted his position and turned serious. "But that brings me back to my first question," he said quietly. "Would chemistry help me with the things I make at all? Or it is something that wouldn't really help me?"
If it would, he was eager to learn all about it.

Eron thought about it for a bit.
"Some chemicals or chemicals mixed with electricity could help etch designs into metal and glass. So the designs can become more elaborate. Metal plating is also a chemical process, that's where you take one mental and plate it with another metal that might have qualities that the metal underneath does not."
Both required chemicals and to an extent electricity, he wasn't sure how comfortable he was with the idea. Those chemicals could be very caustic at times.
"If you use charcoal for your forge, you probably already know that's a hard material to get a hold of, but they do burn the hottest fires. It's possible to learn how to make it, but it's a very time consuming process..."
And the amount of wood it used, however in the old days (and still now) there were nomads who traveled from forest to forest making charcoal. This prevented the forests from being decimated from having too much made.
"Otherwise, for these items, there's not much that could be improved by a chemical process."

"It would be handy for it to be easier to control the temperature of the fires," Andarien admitted. "Although until I have a forge of my own, I guess it's a bit of a moot point."
He started gathering his things up again. "I'm hoping that I can sell some of it to get some money to buy more materials," he added simply because he was talking with someone new and who didn't already know all of this, "but part of me thinks I should use the money - if I make any - to get more supplies for traveling."

Eron looked thoughtful, "If you manage to get your own forge, it might be better to buy more material, as long as you're making a profit, you can slowly increase the amount of material you buy, and lead to being able to buy other things such as traveling supplies."
Assuming of course the boy wanted to make a business out of it, it was always hard to tell what was a hobby and what was for a living with some youth.

"Oh?" Andarien finished putting his things away and closed his chest again. "I hadn't thought of that ... maybe I should ask Mi how the home is coming."
He was thoughtful for a moment, and then he opened his mouth to speak; but then he seemed to think better of it and simply smiled instead.
"I should put my chest away again, and I'll let you finish eating," he murmured. "Whenever you're ready, our tent is that one there." He pointed it out to Eron. His tent, the one Eron would be sharing with him, was between his parents' tent and the one shared by the nekos.

Eron nodded at this, though he wondered what Andarien meant by, asking Miyuki how the home was coming. He continued to eat though, now that Andarien was putting everything away he did remember how hungry he was. He also remembered how good it was to have a hot meal.
Once he was done, he thought about having a bath, but decided to just sleep instead, and so headed for the tent that Andarien pointed out to him.

Shoneah had almost the same thought as Eron, but she took the time to take a bath and wash herself before she went to sleep. In dry, borrowed clothes, with a dry blanket, on flooring that was smooth, and with a fluffy pillow beneath her head, she was asleep the moment she closed her eyes.
So deep was her sleep that she slept through the entire afternoon and evening, not even stirring when the aroma of Lancaeriel's dinner wafted through the area, or when Wren and Miyuki joined her in the tent for bed, or when Wren went out that night for her shift, or when she returned.
In the morning, just as the birds were beginning the dawn chorus, she woke with a start. She looked around, disoriented, her heart racing, one hand reaching instinctively for the hunting knife she usually kept sheathed in the back of her pants. There was a brief moment of panic when she couldn't find it; but then she remembered where she was and that she was not wearing her own clothes. She let out her breath and put her head in her hands, rubbing her eyes gently as her heart rate returned to normal.

Eron had woken up before Shoneah (since he went to bed before her), and so took that bath he hadn't taken the night before. Once he was cleaned and in borrowed clothes, he began to meditate.
It was something he tried to do when they had time, which was very rarely. For Eron, it was hard to practice skills left to flounder for decades when they were always on the move. He had to take himself back through all the steps he was taught as a child.
He was so occupied with trying to find his grounding that he didn't even notice Miyuki taking a seat beside him and starting her own meditation. Since he never did study magic sensing, it also didn't bother him because he simply never noticed.
Miyuki however, noticed him, she noticed how his magic was reaching into the earth, but also noticed how it was sporadic at best. Like he was tripping mentally every once in a while. She had thought, when she joined him that he was a veteran at this like her teacher, apparently not.
Meanwhile Ai was also trying to meditate, leaving Yasu to watch his little sister, which was completely not working. Suki liked to try and crawl over people while they meditate often earning a n** from Ai.

Andarien had also woken and he had stuck his head outside the tent, intending on seeing if there was any breakfast, but when he saw Miyuki and Eron meditating, he went back inside. He hadn't had his goggles on, and when people were meditating the magic that was visible was the worst.
Kaede snuck out while the flap was open and ran towards where Miyuki and Eron were meditating, and as she ran past the girls' tent, Shoneah stepped out, nearly tripping over the little Eevee.
"Careful now, little one," she murmured in her native dialect, the language that still came to her the most naturally.
Kaede pounced on Shoneah's feet in return, and Shoneah smiled and picked her up, stroking her head softly as she headed over to join Miyuki and Eron, the only others she could see who were up and about.

Miyuki frowned, after the nth 'trip' she reached out her hand to Eron and touched his arm. Eron jumped slightly not expecting the touch, he opened his eyes to see Miyuki still sitting cross legged, her eyes still closed but her arm out touching his arm with her finger tips.
"You're not syncing with your breathing," she told him, "Take a deep breath and let your magic roll out with your breath."
"You mean spread my sense out with my breathing?" Eron asked, not sure what Miyuki was asking.
Miyuki cracked an eye open to look at him, "Your magic, you use magic to sense the ground, it's spread out around you but every time you're out of sync, your magic trips and your concentration breaks. Just breath, let your magic be a sense that spreads out, don't think about it so much."
Now that last bit sounded familiar to Eron, like an old teacher from his childhood. In fact she reminded him so much of that old teacher it didn't quite occur to him that she could probably pass for a high school senior or college freshman.

Shoneah felt like she was eavesdropping as she approached Miyuki and Eron, and she slowed her pace. She didn't know much about magic at all, nor about mediating, and really she didn't have much use for it.
Instead of joining them, she just sat near them, holding Kaede in her lap and letting the little Eevee sniff at her.

After a few more tries, Miyuki stopped Eron again. It was better, but she could still feel him tripping once in a while.
"Let's stop, you're going to give yourself a headache if you keep that up," Miyuki told him.
Eron chuckled a bit and rubbed the back of his head, "I'm afraid I haven't done this since I was young..."
He never had to, despite the fact he still used magic, he did so for personal reason, and as a profession he never felt the need to. Now that Eron was no longer meditating, he noticed Shoneah there.
"Morning, did you sleep well?" he asked her.

Shoneah nodded slightly. Once again around people she did not know well, she was reserved and quiet.
"You?" she asked softly in reply.
Kaede seemed to sense that Shoneah's attention wasn't on her anymore, and she hopped out of the girl's arms and ran to pounce on her sister.
