Selphie walked up to the window and smiled warmly. It reminded her of the forest back in Johto, so peaceful and calm yet so full of mystery. Maybe one day she’d be able to return home and deal with the fame, but for now, she was just happy as could be being ‘vanished.’ She didn’t really want to think about Chad though, and why he was so happy with her being kind. Perhaps it had something to do with becoming famous. Yes, when you’re famed, all your actions become you, so it was only natural for Selphie to be as kind as could be with Chad. Perhaps she had changed a little. “You’re welcome Chad.”
Selphie turned around and watched as Chad’s Pokémon came out of their Pokeballs. It was Smeargle that caught her attention first, mainly because he decided to paint something on her hand. When she looked, it was a smiley face made out of green ink. “That’s very nice of you Sketch.” Selphie used her clean hand to pet Sketch’s soft fur. “Here’s my other Pokémon.” Selphie held out a Pokeball and allowed her Pidgey to join the party. “You know, I won’t be able to do this so much once my Pokémon evolves. It’ll just be too big, but for now it’s good. Pidgey, meet Sketch, Nincada, and of course Chad.” Pidgey flew around the room, looking at all the Pokémon from an aerial view before landing on top of Chad’s head and singing a chipper tune. “Sorry, Pidgey likes to sing whenever she’s not in a battle, I hope that doesn’t bother you too much.” Selphie turned to Nincada and Deino. Apparently Deino was simply sitting there, but Nincada seemed almost too reluctant to even get to know him. “It’s okay Nincada. Deino likes to bite, but he wouldn’t eat you, that’s how he gets to know his surroundings, but I’ll make sure he won’t bite you.” Deino sighed but understood that he wasn’t allowed to eat the Nincada. “I know, how about I feed your Pokémon some PokeFood? I’m pretty sure they’re hungry right?” Selphie smiled and walked over to her bag and pulled out a can of something using her clean hand. “All Pokémon love it!”

Chad watched as Selphie walked over to the window and then let out her flying type Pokémon which was a lot cooler to Chad then it should’ve been. He’d never actually seen a flying type yet in someone’s possession. They always seemed like they were so hard to catch because they were always flying around. “Oh cool! You got yourself a flying type. I have a normal and a bug or ground, whatever you want to call Nincada.” Chad laughed as the Pidgey landed on his head and began to sing. “I’m fine with him being there, just as long as he doesn’t want to leave bird droppings there.” Chad had never been splat on by a bird before and he didn’t plan on allowing this to the be the first time. Carefully, he took the Pidgey off of his head and held it in his lap. “So you seem like you know a lot about Pokémon. I take it you completed the whole thing when you were in Kanto and Johto, as in the gym leaders and elite four?” Chad smiled and thought about what it must be like to take on that many gym leaders. It must’ve been tough, but then again, as time goes on, Selphie would’ve only gotten stronger so it might’ve actually been easier.
Chad watched with an excited eye as Selphie pulled out PokeFood. He’d heard about it, but never actually thought about buying any at the PokéMart. “Wow, that awesome. Okay, sure, why not, I’m sure Nincada and Sketch would love some.” Chad looked at Nincada who was carefully looking at Deino with more curious than fearful eyes now. However, his interest in Deino died down the moment it saw the Pokémon food in Selphie’s hands. Smeargle, more casually knows as Sketch, walked over to Selphie and waited patiently for some food as well. Clearly they were eager to get some in their stomachs. “That’s interesting. Makes me kind of wish I knew what I was doing when it came to Pokémon.” Chad laughed at his own naivety in comparison to this woman’s.

Selphie smiled as she handed the food to the Pokémon and watched as they dug in before answering Chad’s comments about her experiences in other regions. “Actually, I wouldn’t be that amazed with me if I were you. I was just an ordinary trainer who made it to the elite four, but realized that they were too good for me. I’m just a, a failure.” Selphie sighed, doing her best to keep this lie up. She didn’t want false sympathy from Chad though, otherwise she’d feel guilty for the lie she just told. “Don’t worry about it though, I’m going to do my best here and who knows, we might end up fighting each other if we take the same path to championship.” Selphie could tell that Chad was a bit upset about how Selphie seemed to have so much more experience than him.
Casually, Selphie sat down on his bed next to him and smiled, thinking about the right thing to say. “You know, I’m not that great of a trainer myself. I have never came in first in a championship for the title of champion. That basically means I’m naïve, and I don’t know what I’m doing. Some people say that you need strong Pokémon to win but let me tell you a secret, that’s not true.” Selphie pointed to Smeargle and then Nincada. “You can work with your Pokémon’s personalities and size to your advantage. Coordinators do it all the time. I learned a thing or two about Pokémon from coordinators as well, and I can pass it all on to you over time if you want. It’s not about which Pokémon has the highest special attack or biggest tank, it’s about the bond you and your Pokémon share and always remember to have fun when battling. It shouldn’t be about winning or losing, it should always just be about having a good time and making friends.” Selphie sighed before continuing, “Some people have forgotten that and let their egos consume their heart.” Selphie looked down, thinking of her ex-boyfriend for a moment before snapping back to reality, “You won’t do that, I can tell.”

Chad listened to Selphie and practically ate up everything she was saying because it seemed to be coming from a place she had her own experiences with. “Well, I can’t say that I fully understand much of this, but I know that I’ll get it as time goes on.” It was nice talking to someone who had something more to say besides talking about how they were going to do their hair or how they planned on taking over once they became champion. “You seem like a pretty grounded person. I guess that just comes from personal experiences though. I’ve met a girl recently who wanted to free my Pokémon from my ‘clutches’ along with Becca and Naano. I never really got to meet her though. She said that we were enslaving our Pokémon and that they should be set free.” Chad found it kind of odd that someone would actually go after him of all people. It’s not like he was abusing his Pokémon. He could definitely name a few others that he didn’t agree with the tactics of, but himself? That just seemed like it was a random draw and he was the unlucky person that day. “I don’t have much of an ego when it comes to myself you’re right. But I honestly can’t say the same for Kadaj.” Chad hesitated for a moment, realizing that something gossip-worthy might slip past his lips, but he felt like he could trust Selphie with these things. “Kadaj is really big on his own self-worth, beyond the point of being conceited. He got angry with me after he lost to me in a battle, but I’m worried that he might start blaming his Pokémon for his losses sooner or later.” Chad shook his head, “I can’t believe I’m telling you all of this. I’m just worried about him, I don’t want to think that he’s going to become one of those people.”

Selphie smiled and nodded, yes she had been called a down-to-earth kind of girl before, but at the same time, many people didn’t like that because her life advice wasn’t always something that they wanted to hear. Chad just happened to be asking all the right questions that made her seem like an approachable person, but if he was to get on her bad side, then she’d have no problem telling him how she felt. “You’re an okay guy yourself Chad. Whoever ends up with you is one lucky person.” Selphie turned back to the Pokémon to see that all the food was gone. “Well, you four eat fast.” Selphie laughed at Deino he seemed to have crumbs all over his face. “Chad can you clean up their mess? I’m going to the washroom to get this paint off of my hand.”
Selphie walked into the bathroom and turned on the sink before rinsing off her hand and wiping them on a dry towel. Once she was done, she walked back into the room to see Chad. She sat on top of her bed which only had Pidgey on it so far. “So Chad I need to be honest with you on this one. I can’t promise anything for Kadaj, all I can do is tell him what’s right, but most people who are full of themselves don’t believe in the advice of others, so naturally I’m going to have to say that you should just stick by his side for the time being and help him be guided through subtle hints. Don’t make anything obvious. I’ll be there with you if you would have me, but of course, I’m not a big fan of being the third wheel.” Selphie laughed and continued, “Tomorrow if it’s still raining we’ll set out. This is what it’s like being a trainer, and so we have to endure. But while we’re here, tell me more about yourself. I know you don’t like spoiling it on the first day, but come on, there’s got to be more about yourself that you’re holding out on.”

As Selphie left to go to the bathroom, Chad turned to all the Pokémon and kindly pushed them out of the way before picking up crumbs and the can off of the floor before throwing it all away in a trash can. “Okay you guys, now that you two have eaten, it’s time for you to come back in your Pokeballs.” Chad held out both of the Pokeballs that had once contained Sketch and Nincada and in a blink of an eye, the two returned to them. Chad then recalled how Selphie had mentioned she could tell he was new because of how uncomfortable he was keeping Nincada out of its Pokeball. ‘Hmm, maybe she’s right. I don’t like letting him out that much because he could get stolen, or maybe I’m just paranoid.’ It seemed like everyone was out to get him sometimes.
Chad smiled towards Selphie as she walked back into the room. “Hey!” Chad’s smile vanished as Selphie explained what she thought about Kadaj. She clearly had done some thinking while she was in the bathroom. “Yeah you’re right when I think about it. It’s just hard to picture him doing something like that. Ugh, let’s talk about something else?” Chad smiled nervously and scratched the back of his head before following Selphie’s lead and sitting on his own bed. Once there, he decided to show Selphie some kind of mercy and start talking about his life. “I basically was in an orphanage. There’s not really anything there I’m completely comfortable explaining. I don’t really understand what it means to be loved and love in return, but I’m trying to be patient and figure out what it’s like. I think I love Kadaj, but it hurts to love him because I know what he could become and I just don’t like… thinking about that.” Chad turned his head sideways, ashamed of himself for stooping so low for someone. “What do you think of me? Be honest.”

Selphie turned to her Pokémon and withdrew them. Once she did, she turned her attention back to Chad and sighed heavily before thinking about what to say next. “An orphanage!?” Selphie looked at Chad, slightly amazed by that piece of information. She’d never imagined that Chad grew up in such a place, just by how kind he was. Not that she wanted to stereotype, but most people Selphie met from orphanages ended up being the kind of people that liked to exert their power into their Pokémon and make them fight for evil, or at least something like that. Selphie decided that it wouldn’t be right to mention that though since Chad seemed like a nice guy who didn’t need that kind of grief.
Selphie decided to reply with an appropriate response whenever she realized that Chad had asked her for her opinion yet again. It seemed like he was beginning to rely heavily on Selphie’s opinion which, for the most part, she was fine with. “Well let’s see… I think loving him is perfectly fine, and if you’re really worried about him, and you truly want to help him, then I don’t see how sticking by him would be a problem. You seem like you’re really into him from what you’ve told me.” Selphie felt slightly saddened by how Chad said it hurt to love him. What kind of lucky man could end up with Chad? It just didn’t seem fair, but then again, most of Selphie’s life was rushed, so she didn’t have time to settle and find the right guy. “You know what, I think you might just need to take a break from him and see where that gets you. For all you know, you could just be falling for him because you’ve been spending so much time with him. Of course, I could be wrong… Tell me what it is that you love so much about him.” Selphie smiled, and placed her hand on Chad’s knee, reassuring him that she was his friend and here for him.

Chad laughed at Selphie when she appeared shocked about him coming from an orphanage. For the most part, he understood why it was hard to believe, which is why he didn’t tell people most of the time. He didn’t want that kind of curiosity because he didn’t like talking about it. It’s not that he was ashamed of his past; he just couldn’t find the right words to describe it because it always seemed like something he should’ve had a better feel for. When he thought about it though, it just seemed like a blur. Almost like his orphanage experience was something he wanted to forget. He knows what it’s like to have parents and be loved, so when he went to the orphanage, it was a big change for him to have to deal with. “Yeah, I went to one. It’s not really fun because up until the age of ten I did have a family that I loved and was loved in return for. So when you go to an orphanage right after something like that, and ‘hope’ that other people will love you, it’s kind of hard to deal with. I thought about really sad things while I was there, but it’s not something I want to share because I’m not that kind of person anymore.”
After that conversation, Chad listened in on Selphie’s much needed, (in his opinion,) advice on Kadaj. “I don’t know if I could do this without him, but I see your point. It’s scary to think of leaving him here or something. I feel like I should at least say goodbye to him first. Or better yet, how about you come with us!?” Chad stood up on the ground and faced Selphie, excited about his idea. “Yeah, think about it! If you came with us, you’d know the signs and could help me stop it. I don’t know anything about people who go rogue.” Chad smiled to Selphie and waited for her thoughts on that idea.

Selphie couldn’t honestly say that she understood anything about being in an orphanage, so she simply nodded whenever Chad talked about his experience. It was good to have a perspective on people. “Sounds like it was an intense time in your life.” Selphie watched as Chad stood up, slightly confused by his sudden enthusiasm to have her come with him on a journey. She’d always sort of assumed that she’d be able to, but didn’t expect him to be so eager about it. “I guess everyone needs someone they can talk to…” Selphie sighed as she thought about the fate she’d have in store if she travelled with this man on a journey. The last thing she wanted to hear before she went to sleep was two men going at it from their tent. “Alright, I’ll come with you, on the condition that if you and this ‘Kadaj’ fellow get busy, I’m not there to hear or see it. I love gay guys, just not visualizing them making love. It’s actually kind of gross to me.” Selphie laughed and playfully shoved Chad before standing up and laying on her own bed. “You seem like a good guy so I’d come with you either way. I just don’t want to think about things going on while I try to get to sleep, so if you have to do it, please make sure there is no moaning.”
Selphie couldn’t believe what she was saying. Why did she even have to tell Chad that she wasn’t okay with two men making love right next to her? It should’ve been obvious, but she just wanted to make sure in case one day Chad decided to be a funny guy and take advantage of Kadaj. Besides, Selphie had only known Chad a day, there was some ideas that just seemed like they would probably be up for debate since it had only been a day. On the flip side, she could tell that Chad was going to be like her best friend here. “Alright then Chad, are you going to bed? Tomorrow once we find Kadaj, we should have ourselves a battle.”

Chad nodded as Selphie mentioned that he had an intense time. It wasn’t so much intense as it was a dark time, but it really wasn’t her business. He just wanted to think about the future and moving forward. “Yeah, I needed someone. I couldn’t talk to anyone else about Kadaj most people I knew, he knew as well. You’re the only person who seemed like you wouldn’t be biased or something of the sort. Don’t worry though, call it dumb, but I trust you more than most other people I’ve known a long time. You’re pretty good with advice.” Chad smiled and sat back down on his bed once Selphie was laying on hers. He wasn’t tired in the slightest bit, if anything, it was only evening so naturally he wanted to stay up until the sun went down and it was officially the night. “I-I’m not going to do an-anything with K-Kadaj! Are you serious Selphie? What kind of guy do you think I am? I don’t want to do that right now, not until I’m positive that he’s the right guy for me. I just don’t know, I mean, I love him and all, but I don’t know if I can get past some of his other odd traits like the fact that he’s so into himself.” Chad sighed and shrugged as he slid under the blankets on his bed. He wasn’t going to sleep yet, or at least, he didn’t plan to, not with his mind scattered like it was. “Yeah, a battle would be nice. Try to go easy on me. I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to the whole Pokémon thing. Loser has to buy the Kadaj and the winner lunch.” Chad secretly hoped he would lose at that point so that he could treat his two friends to a nice meal.

Selphie followed Chad’s lead and slipped under her own covers. She was kind of cozy but didn’t like the idea of sleeping in the same room as Chad, just because it’d only been one day since she met him, and as much as she’d like to think he was a good guy with good intentions, doubts always plagued her mind thanks to her ex-boyfriend who made her realize that even the most amazing kind of guy could just be a great actor. “No funny business tonight or I’ll have Deino do a number on you.” Selphie giggled, trying to play it off as a joke, but she was still serious. “Thanks for that. I try to be, most of my advice comes from my own personal experiences in life. When I was growing up, I only had one boyfriend, so it’s not like I had the kind you’re talking about, but I did have a friend like that. I tried to stop her from joining a bad band called Team Rocket, but it was no use. She joined them and I ended up defeating her in a Pokémon Battle and she was sent to prison. That’s the only thing I could do for her at that point. She was beyond the point of no return.”
Selphie slid under the blankets, hiding her face from Chad. She didn’t like to admit it, but even she failed sometimes and her friend going rogue and joining Team Rocket was one of those times she just wanted to hunker away and vanish. “I was kidding about the whole Kadaj thing, chill out.” Selphie said this as she wormed around under the blankets. “If we’re battling for who is buying lunch tomorrow, there’s no way in heck I’d go easy on you.” Selphie laughed as she pictured him begging for mercy, which caused her to emerge from the blankets, feeling somewhat better now. Maybe she could stop Kadaj from becoming a bad guy. Then again, she would have to evaluate him whenever she met him.

Chad smiled to himself as Selphie slid under the blankets. He couldn’t say that he understood her reasoning, but at the same time, he’d never lost a friend to the clutches of evil either like she had. Also, from what she was saying about this Team Rocket, he was starting to wonder whether or not they were the same organization that Serah was a part of. “Don’t worry about it. We win some and lose some, like you said though, you did the best you could for her. She was too enveloped in her own ideas that she couldn’t see the light, or whatever. I don’t know, I’m not the one who’s good with advice, you are.” Chad laughed as she squirmed around under the blankets. “I know you were kidding, I couldn’t really picture you being serious about that anyways.”
Chad bit his bottom lip, feeling himself sweating a little as he thought about having to buy lunch for Selphie and Kadaj. He figured that Selphie wouldn’t eat a lot, but if he wasn’t paying, Chad had a feeling that Kadaj would order out the whole restaurant, no question about it. “Well, I should warn you, Nincada has been through a lot of battles already and is practically a seasoned pro. You might not even get the option to go easy on me if you want to win.” Chad turned around so that he was no longer facing Selphie, but instead facing the window. It was now night outside and he felt like he could finally go to sleep. “Alright, let’s get some sleep. Whoever wakes up first tomorrow needs to wake up the other so we can head out.”
Chad yawned before closing his eyes, allowing his mind to rest on Kadaj as he drifted off into sleep. He just hoped that he was doing okay. Kadaj didn’t seem like the type of guy to get too confused by all the rain though, Chad was sure Kadaj knew what to do.

Selphie looked up at Chad as he tried to calm her down. It was kind of strange hearing advice from other people, so naturally she couldn’t quite take it to heart, although she did manage to convey it as him caring. “Thanks Chad, I get it. We’ll worry about everything tomorrow. We need to get some rest so that when tomorrow comes around, we’ll be ready for a Pokémon battle, of course that’s after we find your Kadaj.” Selphie smiled and watched as Chad turned around to face the window. It seemed like in a way, he’d been through more than she had. Sure she travelled two regions, but she never had to deal with being an orphanage of gay. Being gay wasn’t always something that was smiled upon. “Tomorrow is a new day, just keep reminding yourself that.” Selphie looked up at the ceiling and imagined herself back in the Kanto region, fighting with her former best friend. ‘I can’t say I see any of her in Kadaj, but I’ve never met Kadaj either. I think he’s definitely a scary person though if he can get someone like Chad to fall in love with him.’ Selphie shrugged and decided to ignore it for now. If he was truly a bad person, she didn’t have doubts that Chad would listen to her, but even if he did, that didn’t mean he would go with what she said. If anything, she kind of felt like he would be the kind of guy that thought he could change Kadaj if he just endeavored the storm.
‘No, I won’t let Chad make the same mistakes I made.’ Selphie nodded to herself and decided to evaluate Kadaj tomorrow. To do that, she might end up having to battle him just to see how he works with his Pokémon.
With that, Selphie closed her eyes and fell asleep, more than eager to get back on the road.

Kadaj had spent the whole day pretty much wandering around town and getting to know people. At one point, he was even talking to some sort of priest or something which turned into an argument about being gay, of course he had to leave the situation before he ended up fighting. He couldn’t stand dumb people and this town seemed to be full of them. ‘Whole day and not a sign of Chad. I guess I’m going to have to go rest up at the Pokémon Center.’ Kadaj had managed to avoid the rain by resting inside of a cathedral in the city that seemed to be worshipping Latios and Latias, strange community. While there, he met a priest who didn’t seem to have anything nice to say about gay people.
Kadaj walked into the Pokémon Center and waved to the nurse who simply suggested that he go rest in one of the chairs since all of the rooms were taken. “Ah, just my luck!” Kadaj let off a heavy sigh before dragging himself to one of the chairs in the back of the room that wasn’t very visible unless one was to squint and look. Mainly because there were so many decorative plants to block the view but he wasn’t the only one sleeping inside. It seemed like a lot of trainers couldn’t come here in time for a room. ‘Well, tomorrow I’m going to find that dude and learn what the hell’s going on. He can’t be leavin’ me like that. It just ain’t right.’ Kadaj crossed his arms over his cold chest. Refusing to put on a shirt was something he always did. But tonight, he decided to put on shirt just for the sake of being warm.
He grabbed the shirt that the weird kid with cat ears gave him and slipped it over his body before laying back down in the soft chair and going to sleep.

Chad was the first to awaken. He looked out of his window to see that it was still sunrise. Kadaj probably wouldn’t be anywhere around since he normally slept at least until morning if he wasn’t woken up by Chad. However, today Chad decided that he would see if Kadaj was in the Pokémon Center it seemed like the appropriate thing to do, at least before Selphie woke up. ‘I’ll come back before she even wakes up.’ Chad stood up and stretched before slipping on his shoes and grabbing his pokeballs and walking out the door.
Apparently, a lot of the Pokémon Trainers seemed to be early risers because most were walking out of the bedrooms and making their way down the hall-ways. “Alright then.” Chad walked into the main room where people brought their injured Pokémon and he saw a lot of people sleeping here. If there was anybody who wouldn’t be able to get a room, he knew it would be Kadaj.
Carefully he made his way through the sleeping trainers until he came upon Kadaj, who happened to be wearing a shirt for once. ‘Finally he decides to put on a shirt!’ Chad nudged Kadaj, hoping that the simple gesture would wake him up. “Kadaj, Kadaj wake up.” Chad didn’t dare bring his voice over that of a whisper in case he woke up all the other sleeping trainers. The last thing he wanted was to make a bunch of enemies on his journey. ‘I’ll have to introduce him to Selphie. I’m sure she can do something to help him stay grounded.’ It was at that moment that Chad realized that he had confessed his feelings for Kadaj to Selphie. The only thing he could do now was hope that his opinion of her was sound and that she wasn’t some big mouth who would tell Kadaj later down the road.
