Sr. Romero Valentín
República Bolivariana de Venezuela
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Romero glared back at Rutilio with equal venom. “Think whatever you like,” he retorted caustically. “If you had been there at the general store and saw what I saw, you would see that I am not lying.”

It infuriated him to just stand by and watch Luz María’s demon attempt to sway the incoming state with her pretty words and false insults. How dare she try to turn a fellow Spaniard against him? For despite their little spat just now, he and Rutilio were related, if only distantly now. But the Venezuelan smiled again when the demon made the mistake of saying Ayúdame. Anyone who so much as interacted with his Central American sister knew that she never asked anyone for help—let alone her blood relatives and fellow Spanish colonies. Her erroneous outburst also had the pleasant side effect of getting Rutilio to lower his pipe and his wrath towards Romero. It did not escape his thoughts that the demon probably wanted him and Florida to fight between each other and ignore her while she escaped and caused further destruction to town outside. But there was no way he was going to fall into that particular trap—especially since he had seen the favorable results of his last verbal tactic. While Rutilio’s sudden appearance in the alley/battlefield was quite an annoyance, he was in no way angry enough at the state to start a pointless fight that would clearly help the enemy.

However, it didn’t seem like the Floridian was about to forgive him completely just yet. Romero was startled to see Rutilio not only walk up to María in a trusting-looking way, but also order him to apologize for his supposed name-calling. Romero bit back his venomous response that he had never called María any names, and had even exclusively referred to the demon as demonio or espiritu—albeit with some decorative adjectives attached—and instead quickly thought of a way to turn this little dilemma around.

Venezuela hit upon an idea, and he smirked at the opportunity to turn Mexico’s demon’s ploy against her. Of course, he had to keep up pretense to avoid tipping his enemy off too early. He folded his arms and sighed, not moving from where he stood, acting every bit as if he was only reluctantly relinquishing his angry pride to give in to Florida’s order. “Hmph. I guess you’re right,” he said slowly. Then Romero turned to face María. “Lo siento para burlarte cuando estás estresada, María. You’re a wonderful and strong sister, and I am very glad to have you by my side. I apologize for any injury I have dealt you in the past hour, and I truly hope you will forgive me my insensitivity.”

He bowed his head in false apology for a moment and then stepped forward to drive in the metaphorical dagger. Without changing his tone, he continued. “You’re too strong to give in to anything—not to my words, not to anyone else’s, and certainly not the pathetic phrases that this lying demon is spewing out at us. Don’t give in, María!" he ordered again. "You can fight this disembodied spirit! Estoy contigo!”

The imposter could see where the Venezuelan was going. He was expecting her to say something the real Luz Maria wouldn't say. After living in her body for several months, he was able to learn a bit about her mannerisms. Now, what would she say at a moment like this? "Damn right, you're sorry. I may be a b***h, but I still have feelings. And stop with that gooey talk, you're going to make me puke." She raised her eyebrow at the last part. Is going at it again? "What're you-?" A shot of pain was felt in her head, she held it as the real Luz Maria was fighting back "GAH! You a*****e! I won't let you out! You'll pay for this!"

Rutilio continue to frown disapprovingly at Venezuela until the nation finally seemed to accept that he was in the wrong and was willing to apologize. There! That was much better. The Floridian smiled approvingly when the other former Spaniard expressed his deepest regrets for upsetting Mexico. Now they could simply put all this behind them, maybe eat some snacks or drink tequila, then go take a nap. Well, hopefully Maria would agree to a nap. She never did seem to take well to the idea of random napping throughout the day when there was work to be done...

Florida jumped in surprise when Romero started shouting at his sister about possession and spirits. He had never thought of Venezuela as being so superstitious before! It seemed so strange and out of place in the modern era. The Floridian was about to tell him to stop when Mexico shouted threats back at Romero. He stared at his cousin awkwardly when she said something about not letting "you" out.

"M-Maria...?" Rutilio asked uncertainly. Had both of them lost their minds? There was no way the Venezuelan had been telling the truth... right? He took a small step back from his cousin with a concerned and bewildered expression. "You seem more unwell than I first assumed..."

The girl fell to her knees as she kept holding her head. "No! You won't win this time! This body is mine!" There was an inner struggle between Luz Maria and the beast that lived within her. Something within the girl was preventing her from winning, she wasn't sure what it was.

Romero raised an eyebrow at Rutilio as if to say I told you so before returning his attention to his possessed sister, who was now on her knees and clutching her head once again. He had begun to run out of variations of encouragement to hurl at the demon, and lack of inspiration led him to commit to a potentially foolish move. The Venezuelan stepped forward warily, closing the distance between him and Mexico by about three steps for now, his right hand on his sword just in case she tried to pull something. “Al fin, demonio,” he declared. “As long as you are alone on this plane, you are lost. You can never take what was never yours.”

Out of Caracas: Derp. I'm out of ways to say "You can do it!" I have an idea for a "final" move, but I'll use this to test how wise that move would be first...

All of a sudden, there was a small sign of the Mexican girl. tears started flowing down her cheeks "G... get away... Forget about me. Just go! I might kill you guys! I'd never forgive myself if I ever killed mi familia." she sobbed as she was holding back the monster as best she could, she didn't know if she could win this battle.

Rutilio's eyes went wide as Mexico began to cry. He had never seen her cry before. Never. The Floridian still had trouble believing this and he certainly didn't understand it. All he knew was that one of the nations he had been born to protect--his family--was in danger. And he had no idea how to protect her. The pipe he had been holding slipped from his fingers as he unthinkingly rushed to her side and fell to his own knees. Florida gripped her shoulders gently yet firmly as he spoke to her in a soft yet mildly panicked and certainly confused voice.

"Maria, do not cry," he tried to soothe her even as his heart pounded anxiously while he scrambled for some way to defend her from something he could not fight. "We are right here. No one will die or be killed, si? Me and Romero will stay right here. Do not be scared, Maria... I know you do not like to hear it, but we love you so we will stay by your side until you are better." He smiled weakly. "Besides, Alta and Boss Spain would never forgive me if I left you."

The tears continued to flow. it's been so long since she cried. Luz Maria groaned as she could feel the monster clawing his way out "No te creo! If they really loved me, or even cared about me, then why did they leave? Not once did any of them looked back and said goodbye... All of them, just abandoned me. They didn't think about how I would feel." She knew what negative emotions would do, but she couldn't help how she felt. She wished she didn't feel this way, but these emotions were etched into her heart. it was hard to fight them back when her past kept haunting her.

Florida bit his lip and was forced to look away for a moment. He knew who she was talking about and didn't like the topic either. Rutilio sighed lightly before resting his forehead against hers as he closed his eyes. "I love you, Maria," he said. "I know that Alta is rude and troublesome and never knows when to keep his mouth shut, but he loves you, too. I am sure the others do as well. So does Spain and so many others. I know it hurts to be betrayed... I know." His mind briefly flickered to Georgia and he nearly flinched at the memory, but smiled softly instead as he recalled their promise to meet for dinner at 8. "But... betraying and hurting one another does not mean we stop loving each other. It hurts... and it hurts to betray one anther. They felt leaving was best for them and their people at the time. That does not mean they stopped loving you, though. I am certain of it. You must stop pushing away the people who wish to be close to you, Maria. It is even worse to be alone, si?"

Everything Rutilio said was true, but it still hurt being left alone. It felt like she was just thrown away. Did everything they do together meant nothing to them? Luz Maria hugged her cousin and sobbed onto his shoulder "Idiotas! They could've at least told me instead of just walking away. It hurt so much, I stopped being close to people due to my fear of abandonment. They have no idea how I felt when all of them left me."

Florida almost fell back when Luz Maria hugged him, but managed to maintain his balance. He smiled as she cried into his shoulder and held the Mexican close. Rutilio blushed lightly. When was the last time she hugged him or let him hug her? It felt like eons since his cousin did more than ruffle his hair in her affectionate yet distant way. For a long time he thought she was being strong, but now he realized all that time she had been afraid of getting close. Perhaps he should have paid closer attention.

Rutilio placed a soft kiss on her head as he let her cry against him. "You do not need to be alone anymore, Maria," he said. "I cannot promise no one will ever hurt you again, but you do not need to face it by yourself. You have many people who want to support you if you will let them. I know it. Your family loves you as much as you love them."

For so long, Luz Maria has hid her true feelings from everyone, including her family. But maybe it wasn't so good keeping them bottled up, it's been causing her problems, especially with this curse she's gotten "Haha.... I'm pathetic, si? I'm one of the oldest colony, and I'm getting lectured by a ninito. And, I think... I knew that all this time, but I didn't want to risk getting my heartbroken." she sniffled.

Sr. Romero Valentín
República Bolivariana de Venezuela
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Romero had been expecting the demon to give way, but he hadn’t expected the how. As a result, he could do little but stand and stare blankly as María finally defeated her demon and collapsed into tears. The Venezuelan was so stunned by this particular display that he allowed Florida to react first. Then Romero was left to watch as María cried and Rutilio consoled her, leading her through his words all through the issues that had been causing her the most pain—her former colonies. Romero knew it had been quite a sore spot for her when her upper half seceded, but he hadn’t realized it was that sore a point in time for her. At least Rutilio knew enough about that part of her history to comfort her through it all. The Venezuelan was glad Florida had intervened now, because he would have been quite lost answering all of that alone.

Finally, María gave a self-deprecating laugh and called herself pathetic for letting herself get in such a state. At this, Romero finally stepped in. “It’s not pathetic to face your deepest torment and finally understand why it happened,” he stated, walking closer and kneeling next to his sister and Florida. “Do you know how few humans and even states and nations can claim that, hermana? It’s as I said earlier—you can’t just isolate yourself from everyone. Love always deserves a second chance. Sometimes it appears in funny ways, but it’s always there, como tus hermanos y tus colonias siempre están contigo. There’s nothing wrong with letting someone know how you really feel; in fact, it does a lot more good than keeping it bottled up inside. No matter what sort of crap life throws at you, I’m always here for you. Me, Luis, Antonio…” Romero wanted to hug María right now, but at the same time, it felt a little awkward to him and Rutilio was already doing that. Instead, he draped an arm across her shoulders in a sort of man-hug. Then he gave a laugh. “Te sientes major después de ventilar todo? Mejor que contener todo, ?”

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Out of Caracas: WOW you guys move fast. I'll let Maria decide when she's feeling all better and Romero can take her back to her dorm so FLA can go on his date.

The Mexican sighed. She couldn't believe she was being lectured by a bunch of young former colonies. Well, at least it was nice to now that they really did care, and not sympathize her. She wouldn't forgive them if they did "Gracias, hermanos.... Oh, and also..." she tugged at both the boys' ears "If you tell anyone about this, I swear I'll kick your a**." A little something to let them know she's still herself "Romero, if you'll be so kind, take me back to the dorm. I'm a bit tired...."

Romero winced as María yanked on his ear, but the move was over with as quickly as it began, so he didn't think too much of it. He nodded agreement with the Mexican's decision to go back to her dorm, but protested somewhat against her requirement that he and Rutilio tell no one else what had transpired here. "Claro que sí... Pero, estás segura, hermana?" he asked. "Demon or not, it might help if nuestra familia knew you have it and knew how to help you cope. At the very least, I've got to update Inglaterra on the matter, since I tried to call him for help first."

The Venezuelan offered Mexico a hand up, although he quite expected her not to take it and stand up on her own. "Either way, let's go, María. Thanks for your help, Rutilio. I'll see you around."

As they walked, Romero took out his phone to send a quick text to Arthur to update him on the demon thing:

"Never mind. Rutilio and I helped María suppress the demon on her own. The while process was a lot less painless than I thought it would be. Text me back; I think I now have something that can help with that black blood issue." ~Romero
