Erinn & Riley

"Can't you move any faster Erinn?" Riley's voice said, cutting through before the Eevee himself. The magician was wide awake despite the late hour, due to his stolen treasure that he would do anything to have back. The charm had been destroyed once, then remade and reinforced, and he would not allow it to be taken from him again. Erinn morosely trudged behind his companion without a word. Something was weighing heavily upon the Paras' mind, and his companion had somehow failed to notice. He wasn't quite sure whether it was good or bad, but it was simply the way it was.

The pair took their search to the Commons Room without further mishap and began to search...

((Once again, sorry about how short this is...))

Erinn and Riley's search would take them around the room and into just about every nook and cranny it had to offer. It was just as the pair were about to give up and leave that the slightest noise would graze Riley's ears and send his gaze upwards.
"s**t."
There he would find three Furret, each hanging to a different light fixture on the ceiling. One was immediately above Riley. The other two were a distance off and they quickly took advantage of that distance to jump to the ground and sprint off with their stolen goods.
The last, remaining Furret stayed by himself, clinging to the light fixture. However, unlike the other two, he didn't have any bag or anything to imply that he was carrying any of the stolen possessions.
Erinn and Riley would have to choose between chasing the other two as a gamble or staying behind to guarantee the capture of this one. If they stayed behind, the temporary escape of the other two was assured--the palace could be a vast and difficult to navigate set of hallways and corridors at times. They could give a general direction to any passerbys, but by the time anyone caught up it would be likely that the other Furret would have found somewhere else to hide.

Choose a course of action. You can either chase Furrets 1/2, or you can stay behind and keep Furret #3 cornered. Please state which course of action you're taking in your next post. If you choose to chase after either of them, you'll be able to follow them straight to the next area.
p.s: if anyone metagaems this I'll throw a fit. Let Darky choose a course of action before posting in this thread--if you really want to post here, wait until after she's made a decision.

Erinn & Riley

The pair scoured the Commons Room from top to bottom, looking about for any sign of the thieves. Erinn's searching was quite tentative but Riley's was fast-paced and determined; clearly the Eevee would not rest until every corner of the place was searched. Every time that Erinn slackened his pace, Riley was at his side, turning him around another corner before racing off to another place. It was no easy task searching the entirety of a place so large as this, but the two managed it, though Riley did most of the work. The magician was worked into a frenzy over his lost treasure and the unwillingness of his partner didn't help his situation in the slightest. Needless to say, by the time he was finished with his search the Eevee was disgruntled and out of breath, and his ears drooped with disappointment; his hat was askew and his cape fluttered half-heartedly, while his eyes gleamed almost to give an impression of madness. As Erinn took in the sight of the Normal Type he cowered back slightly, terrified of a reprimand that was surely coming. Indeed, Riley was opening his mouth to utter something or another to the Paras, but just then the faintest of noises flitted past the Eevee's ear and instantly his head shot up towards its source: in that instant all hell seemed to break loose.

On the lights above three Furret hung, and it was evident at once that these were the ones they'd been searching for. Riley tensed as the further two jumped off and began to scamper away whereas Erinn's eyes widened and he looked rather as though he might faint dead away. It was, for the Paras, a nightmare come true. "-rin. Erinn!" Riley's sharp tone cut through the Paras' thoughts like a knife, "This is no time to be just standing there!" The Eevee knew that there wasn't enough time, and that he'd have to decide what to do and fast if he wanted to make a manuever to pursue either of the others. "Erinn, we have to move!"

The Paras looked at Riley with staring eyes, like he'd never seen the Normal Type before. As a matter of fact, he hadn't ever seen Riley like this, even when the magician had been cut off from them after the experience with the ghosts he had never been like this. The only way Erinn could venture to describe it was half-mad with worry, and he couldn't say that he liked it too much. The Eevee had at last seemed to give up his attempt at rationalizing with Erinn in favor of beginning to bolt after the Furret himself, they were ahead but there was still time, he could still catch up. "N-No!" Erinn's voice screeched, and the Paras caught Riley by the back paw, leading the Eevee to trip and fall and watching his golden chance slip away before his very eyes. "No, we can't leave!" Erinn's voice quavered but he stood strong, looking down at Riley for just an instant before locking his eyes on their captive up above. "We have one Riley, we can leave the others to the rest of the Guild." The Paras' eyes were regretful but determined at the same time, "If we'd gone after those two we might have lost them. There was no guarantee, but this one can't get away, not with us here to keep an eye on him." Riley didn't respond, rising to his paws and looking out the door after the other thieves wistfully. He adjusted his hat and pulled the brim to shadow his eyes as he looked back up at their prisoner. Erinn offered a tentative smile to the Eevee, relieved that he hadn't been reprimanded as they stood as dual sentinels over the remaining Furret; what the Paras couldn't see was the tears of frustration that sparkled in Riley's eyes as he stood there, helpless to do anything about his own precious treasure.

It took a minute or two of the Furret staring down at Erinn and Riley. Just a minute or two.
And then he had a startling, amazing realization.
Erinn looked like he couldn't handle his morning toast in a battle and Riley was... well, Riley was just an Eevee.
What the hell was he scared for? Their combined weight wasn't even half of his!
With this thought in mind, the Furret dropped down from the ceiling and quickly grabbed Erinn at the base of the pincer to prevent him from retaliating.
"Don't move or your buddy gets it."
Furret generally weren't known as the strongest of creatures, so just how significant that threat was was hard to say.
Though... Paras weren't exactly that strong themselves.

((Not your fault, Darky. I've been out of sorts lately.))

There was a lengthy short pause in which the three present simply stared at one another, the two Teammates from the ground and the thief from above. No one said the slightest word as their glances were exchanged, making it quiet enough that the swinging of the light was the only thing disturbed the silence. To Erinn, this silence was very ominous; he knew now what had happened for certain and he was expecting retribution from Arceus or some such character to strike him down from above. This was all his fault and he knew it, and that knowledge was miserable to possess. This was physical proof of what he'd thought for a long time; he didn't deserve to be a member of a Rescue Team, he only brought misfortune because of his cowardice. No one talked about it mostly, but the Paras had the sinking suspicion that the Team was ashamed of him. He knew that he would be ashamed of himself in their situation. I'm just a horrible person, aren't I? he thought miserably as he stared up at the Furret. It was hard to tell considering all three of the Normal Types had looked similar but he didn't think this one was Don. If ever he met that Furret again then the rest of the Guild would know what he'd done with only the slightest of words from that Pokemon's mouth. There was no doubt in Erinn's mind that Don was one of the three, or even if he wasn't that this had certainly been planned by him. It was too much of a coincidence to think otherwise. The knot in the Paras' stomach twisted and made him feel slightly sickened. It's all my fault...

At that very instant the Furret from above dropped down and grabbed the Bug Type by the pincer in one swift motion. Erinn's eyes opened wide with alarm as he found himself caught in a situation that he couldn't easily get out of. He couldn't stand without both claws and to get out of the Normal Type's grasp would require some sort of force. Unless of course he did that... The Paras thought the better of it for the moment and settled with pulling backward with all the strength his tiny legs had to offer though the struggle was in vain. Although the Paras grunted and whimpered as he tried to pull away, Erinn was surprisingly quiet. He didn't cry for help from Riley, he didn't even shriek in terror at the situation he'd been placed in when it had first occurred. He honestly saw the situation as decent retribution for what he'd done. If he was able to get out of it he'd be forgiven, if not then he'd gotten what he justly deserved.

Riley swiftly turned as the Furret jumped down and grabbed Erinn by the claw, eyes glittering beneath the brim of his cap where they were still hidden. "Don't move...?" the Eevee asked darkly, "Alright, I won't move." There was something especially ominous about the magician's words, as though he had an idea up his sleeve. As a matter of fact, he did; the Eevee made it his job to do as such. Tapping into the energy of the magic sort, the Normal Type prepared a Baton Pass and let the attack loose. With any luck it would succeed in jumbling their positions and remove Erinn from immediate danger, then in that split second of surprise that would remain from his trick move he’d then be able to act from whatever position he ended up in.

((Sorry to hear that Cys.. :/ I hope you feel better soon.))

The Furret stayed quiet but wary as he held onto his hostage. His mind took constant steps as he tried to figure out exactly what the best plan was. He didn't have much physical stature so really the moment he let go of the Paras he lost his trump card. Eevees weren't really much of a threat, but all the same.
It was then, to the Furret's surprise, that he found himself in the air and staring up at the ceiling.
Riley's Baton Pass had been successful, but unfortunately for him he hadn't really considered the possibilities very well. Where Riley had been standing was now a safe (but likely startled) Erinn while the Furret had shifted to where Erinn was mere moments ago. This, of course, left Riley with only one place to be. Immediately underneath the Furret.
The resulting crash ended with the almost seventy-five pound Furret landing on top of Riley, who in all likelihood didn't even weigh a fifth of that.
The thief's head smacked against the ground, leaving him further confused and disoriented.
Most likely, the only one left to act would be Erinn.

Erinn & Riley

It's funny how sometimes when everything goes according to plan it turns out exactly the the opposite of how it was intended. That was what happened to Riley as the Baton Pass came into play and the risk that he'd anticipated before became realized. He'd bet on a chance that had apparently been too great of a chance. Long story short, Erinn was safe but now he was in the Furret's position from before and that was not a safe place for an Eevee in the slightest. In the split second that he had to act before the other Pokemon fell on him, Riley went completely limp to minimize the eminent injury that was certain to occur. And so it did. The Furret fell atop him immediately after and the Eevee saw stars at the sudden weight. He gasped for breath as it was forced from his lungs and struggled to maintain some semblance of consciousness. These situations were exactly when he needed what had been stolen; his Endure TM was a part of that charm and without it this task was exceedingly difficult. However, Riley was determined of one thing: he was not about to die from a Furret sitting on him. He'd been through too much to let that end him. Still, he was in quite a bit of agony which didn't help the concentration needed for any sort of magical attack. Erinn... he thought hazily as he struggled not to submit to unconsciousness, Now would be a good time to do something!

From Erinn's point of view, things were more shocking than ever. One second he was up in the air and the next he was staring at Riley who was almost immediately hit by the falling Furret. It took a moment for the Paras' mind to catch up with what had happened, though he was certain it was Riley's doing. He stood staring for a moment and then his mind caught up. It was perfect, the thief was dazed and he was completely free to act. If only he could actually build up the courage... No, don't think, just act. Just do it, just do it! The Bug Type garnered all of the moxie he could muster and released a Stun Spore from his mushrooms that he sent toward the thief. He gave a mental apology to Riley, getting the feeling his friend would be caught in it to if it was successful, but this was all he could do. Just this once! he thought, pleadingly, Just this once let me do something right!

The Furret was completely unaware of the advancing cloud of spores until the moment he inhaled a small cloud and quickly set to coughing violently. He rolled off of Riley in the process and quickly got to his feet, but the spores got to work and did their job quickly. Unlike electrical paralysis, however, the spores merely numbed the body. Feeling was lost in the tips of his paws. And then it stretched upwards and it sunk into his body until his touch had become numb.
The result was a very angry, disoriented looking creature whose feet slapped against the ground with every step. The numbness made it incredibly hard for him to control his body beyond even the most basic of motions, leaving every step a trial as he tried to keep himself from falling. Every motion would result in him having to balance himself against the rest of his body--a body he couldn't properly feel.
He didn't say anything, though past his addled mind he was obviously trying to think of some sort of a plan. He just stared at Erinn carefully.
Not that escape seemed possible. Even if he left and Erinn ignored him entirely, chances are he wouldn't get far let alone manage to find a decent hiding spot.
Though... it was hard to tell. Pokemon could be rather resistant, after all.

Erinn & Riley

Erinn watched with delight as his plan worked, even as he watched the spores begin to take effect on their victims. In fact, the Bug Type was so excited that he'd managed to do something right for once that it took him a good moment of watching the Furret get to his feet before the Paras realized that he had to keep going now that he'd started off so nicely. "Oh-Oh right!" he mumbled to himself before sending a Giga Drain at the Furret to keep drawing away at the thief's will and energy to escape. It was really satisfying to be winning a battle, in all honesty, the Paras hadn't done this more times than there were legs on his body. It was...exhilarating.

Even as Erinn was relishing his miniature moment of victory, Riley lay panting on the ground. He too had breathed in the numbing spores which were actually a blessed relief from the agony that his limbs had been feeling; he wouldn't be surprised if something was broken, but now at least he was relieved of the pain and could breathe again. Through dim eyes he watched Erinn's attempt at continuing the fight and closed them against with the slightest of groans. He didn't want to move, didn't want to think, let alone actually act and do something like participating in a battle. But his anger over the loss of his precious treasure granted him enough strength to pull one last ace, even from where he lay upon the ground. Tapping into his weary energy, a pulsing wave that was scarcely visible rippled from the Eevee across the entire room: Synchronoise. Erinn would be spared from its effects, being a Bug Type, but the thief would feel it almost certainly unless his efforts were to no avail. Riley couldn't really tell himself. He couldn't feel his limbs though he sensed the stir of energy; all of it was really left now to chance.

The two attacks combined left the Furret stumbling until he hit the ground with a dull thud. Apparently, it had been enough to knock him unconscious.
With the Furret now defeated, the pair would be free to take him to the authorit--... Maybe not, he weighed a lot more than they did.
Well, they could always retrieve his ill-gotten goods... but he didn't have any with him, the other two took off with everything.
Er...
What exactly could they do?

Erinn & Riley

"...We...We did it..." Erinn breathed in astonishment after the Furret had toppled to the ground. He'd helped, he'd actually helped! Surely that was somewhat redeeming, right? Sure he'd caused it but he'd taken care of one of the thieves at least, even if it wasn't Don. It made the Paras nervous to know that the other Furret was still out there, he'd been right to begin with in suspecting the Normal Type and now all this... But Don was tricky and very smooth-talking, there was a possibility that if he was one of the three he could still get out of here if he hadn't been caught yet. That would never do, they'd have to keep searching and find him and the rest of the stolen items. The Paras would know Don by a look, or by his voice if he found him, that much he knew at least; for once Erinn seemed determined to help. As the Paras thought all this through he failed to acknowledge the fact that his Teammate was lying on the ground nearby, mostly unconscious by this point. When Erinn's gaze did go over to Riley it was mid-sentence. "We have to take care of him somehow," the Paras said, "Do you have any idea-Riley!" In another moment Erinn had scurried over to his Teammate and looked down with bright, frightened eyes, "Oh Arceus, Riley, Riley hang in there! Riley!"

The Eevee was slipping back and forth between consciousness and a haze of subconscious by now. He'd watched with a small spark of satisfaction as the Furret had fallen, but the resulting thud seemed oddly distant to his ears. He definitely knew something was wrong but he didn't have the energy to move limbs he couldn't feel and try and get an oblivious Paras' attention. When Erinn came over and spoke to him he looked up vaguely, trying to come to terms with how odd he felt. It was like feeling pain without feeling any pain. There was no real sensation to it because he could feel it, and yet it tingled, almost like it wanted to hurt but couldn't. "Help, help, somebody help!" Erinn cried. The sound of his companion's voice reached in a delayed manner and Riley managed to crack a smile. Erinn was panicking again without good reason, if he felt up to talking he would have mentioned just that to the Paras but he was still catching up on recovering from his lack of oxygen and wasn't sure that any words would come out particularly intelligible just now. What he really had to worry about was getting the feeling back in his limbs, then he could address the wounds that he'd taken and figure out just how bad they were. Crack!

As if she had heard the Paras' pleas, a Gardevoir appeared gracefully behind the duo, her red eyes dark with worry. "Erinn, what's wrong?" she asked the Bug Type, who simply whimpered and extended a claw to point toward Riley. "Oh my..." Irilyss murmured, kneeling down beside Riley. The Eevee looked up at his other Teammate in surprise, Irilyss didn't leave the Team Room often if she could help it. He hadn't honestly thought that she'd show up coming after them. The Gardevoir caught Riley's eye and smiled slightly, reassured that he wasn't in bad enough shape to not recognize her. "Hold still," she said softly, "I'll help you." Placing her hands on his back carefully, the Psychic sent a Heal Pulse through the Eevee's body in an attempt to address the issue.

The results were immediate: Riley instantly began to feel the tingling receding from certain parts of his body as the healing magic worked its job. He felt more alert and his lungs were now more willing to accept the air that was being drawn into them. Clumsily the magician moved his paw to dig into the bag that was lying in front of him. It was fortunate that he hadn't fallen on that, it would have hurt a good deal more than it already had. At last he felt the thing he'd been searching for, grateful that he could still get some sense of shape at least, despite the numbness, and he pulled out a Cheri Berry which he promptly and indelicately shoved in his mouth. At last the odd numbness that made his movements clumsy faded and he could feel his own limbs again, although this was both a blessing and a curse. He winced as the pain that had been held back now hit him full force and he felt the place that it was the worst. The Furret had fallen across him and must have pinned his left hind paw strangely for it didn't feel entirely right. Maybe it was a muscle or a bone, he was sure; what he did figure out was that he could walk with somewhat of a limp in spite of it. Aside from being very sore and the fact that he now appreciated the ability to breathe a great deal more than he had before, he was otherwise alright though. All in all he'd been very fortunate, it could have been much worse (but wasn't thanks to a certain guardian angel). "...Thank you Irilyss," he said with a smile, "Now we just have to take care of him." The Eevee pointed, with much more control this time, to the Furret who lay unconscious on the ground with a slight frown on his face.

The Gardevoir gave Riley a blank look and Erinn stepped in for the Eevee, tripping over himself to explain. "Wh-What Riley means is, that's one of the thieves! We caught him and defeated him, but we couldn't take him anywhere. Now that you're here you can help, right?" The Paras looked thoroughly hopeful, heartened by the fact that Irilyss had arrived and helped Riley to recover so quickly. It was endearing almost, like the way that puppy looks when expecting to be praised.

"...I suppose," Irilyss said, a little surprised by the sudden request. "You say he was one of the thieves the Guild is after?"

Erinn nodded vigorously. "That's right, we saw all three of them, they're all Furret just like this one," he reported, "We saw the other two run off, we might be able to catch up if we're lucky." The Paras was, of course, being extremely optimistic, but there was no need to halt that considering it was better than his usual state of constant panic and pessimism.

Riley nodded in affirmation of Erinn's words, looking to Irilyss again. "If you take him to Solaris it should be fine," the Eevee said, "Just tell him that you found one of them and he can probably take it from there or at least tell you who to take him to." He smiled again, "Once your done you can catch up with us again, we'll be around searching for those other Furret." And what they've stolen...

Irilyss stood and nodded. "Very well," she said, walking over to the unconscious Furret's side. "I will see you both shortly." She spared a second look for Riley, that lasted only an instant before adding "Take care of yourself." Then, with another crack the two were gone.

Riley turned back to Erinn and picked up his hat from the ground in a paw. He straightened it and deftly flicked it so that a burst of glittering sequin-like objects came off of it before placing it back on his head with a smile of satisfaction. "Come on Erinn, that's one down!" he said cheerily, before starting to lead the way toward the exit that the other two Furret had taken. Odds were they were still in this general direction although they could be anywhere by now, at least they had some sort of bearing to base off of although they couldn't follow the thieves directly. Erinn trailed behind Riley, glancing around warily to see if any conspicuous Furret-shaped shadows were still lurking around the area. Seeing none he seemed contented and hurried after the Eevee with a lightness to his step that wasn't there before. It was confidence: Erinn was starting to believe that there was more to him than just the coward. Maybe there was more to courage than being brave: maybe Paras could be heroes too.

A cloaked Gardevoir led the way into the Guild's Commons Room, scarcely mindful of where she was leading. Anues had wanted to get out of the cold so she had attended to that: in the end that was really her only purpose for coming here now. Irilyss removed her cloak wordlessly, finding it somewhat damp from the melted snowflakes that it had absorbed. She carefully folded it and held it in her arms, proceeding to sit down in one of the many chairs nearby a roaring fire that someone had thoughtfully stoked to keep out the chill of the winter day. Irilyss had been rather quiet on the way down, preoccupied with one thing or the next that was on her mind, but now she watched the fire idly until Anues seemed to be settled before picking up their conversation as though they'd never left it off in the first place.

"I can think of other words besides pleasant if you'd prefer. Neutral maybe, or complacent. Perhaps carefree or definite. Or would fixed be more to your liking?" She spoke through the words without really thinking about them, concentrating more on just saying anything at all. Maintaining conversations was, needless to say, not her forte. "Whatever word you want to choose though, there's still a difference. I suppose it can't be helped though." The Gardevoir's train of thought drifted off the topic and she fell silent again, eyes falling to the cloak in her lap when they found nowhere more interesting to look at while she waited for a response from her companion.

Anues

The Gardevoir never took to settling in once they entered the room. His eyes preferred to examine it only before walking aimlessly, though never making as much as a flinch to touch anything. He was listening to the female's words, but the more she progressed the more he assumed she was messing with him somehow. Provoking him, but to do what? Anues came still, though still not turning to face the other Gardevoir as she entered silence. He merely closed his eyes for a few seconds before finally turning to face her. "You're a naive being. But I suppose that's why you're where you are, and I'm where I am." He turned back on that note, proceeding toward the window that caught his attention prior. He was in no rush with Irilyss. It let him collect his thoughts.
"Disciplined, for lack of a better term. Why, though? ...Experience, indifference. Negation, you may even call it. Of course, I never asked for it to happen. Not directly. It simply played out as such, though I couldn't say I mind. Pity really is something..." His voice trailed off on the thought before finally turning back to Irilyss again. "So you escape death so you can live to throw your life away personally." The statement wreaked of contempt while his expression could not despite him in reality honestly not being far from that same idea. Irilyss didn't know that though and this waste of time was for her, not him.

"You have every right to live a pleasant existence yet you choose not to. Maybe I shouldn't help you as I may be unable to. But I would like to help you." Though passively stated, it was true. He didn't know her situation, but the mind was easily manipulated once it felt a sense of security. If she spoke of anything, he progressed. Anues hovered momentarily before a clear purple aura formed below him where he crossed his legs and sat in wait for the female's response. She kept the topic going, after all. Not him. Regardless, he changed the subject after but a second or two of silence, simply to see which route she would take. "So you like the snow. I imagine we'll be getting enough of it."

"Are you implying something with that statement Anues?" the female asked immediately after his first statement. There wasn't accusation in her tone but rather a hint of amusement. She continued to listen as he spoke, but her expression remained somewhat bemused as she mulled over his comment. Irilyss allowed him to talk his way through to the end of his statement without saying a word in response, waiting it out with her characteristic patience. When he finished with his change of subject she smiled slightly, raising her ruby eyes to meet her companion's. "Naive is one word for it, to coin your phrase," she stated simply, her tone light as she smiled slightly. "Tell me something Anues: have you ever walked through fire and not been burned?" The question seemed just as lacking in context as his own about the snow, but hers was made for an ulterior reason. "At first you're grateful, you feel as though you've had great fortune befall you, but then you realize that your blessing is a curse. You realize that you're the only one without a burn and that makes you out of place. There is something that you've lost by evading harm and that something can't ever come back to you."

Irilyss spoke in a calm and rhythmic manner, almost singsong in tone though it wasn't mocking: the Gardevoir was completely serious. She absently smoothed the fabric in her hands as she continued, "What is and isn't a pleasant existance is subjective. Choices are too. Some would say we have them and others would disagree. Am I beyond help? Do I need help? ...Could you help me?" Her phrasing grew disconnected and hushed for a moment at that statement, almost as though she was truly asking the question of him, but then she shook her head. "Who knows? I don't chose to live my life in misery, I chose to live it as the hates of fate turn it. I appreciate the good and cope with the bad just as any other person would. There are sins that we have that can't be forgiven, but there's no use crying over them or trying to repent. What's past is past, that's all the more there is to it."
