Well, as far as cliches go, you need a rainy night, which comes hand-in-hand with a little angst. And of course, they share the same room.

Rainy night, my word, yes. Very typical.
The fact that Sanzo and Hakkai share a room in oh-so-many-ocassions certainly provide a convenient setting for a 383 story.
Another typical setting: Sanzo reading newspaper, Hakkai watching.
