Lumiere Meridienne
"How much have I missed, exactly? Three? Or four?" he asked, his voice as steady as it had ever been, and free of anything resembling excitement. If he let himself get excited now, he'd end up losing focus, and then he'd be one of the ones pushed into the sand, with a torn open shoulder and a snapped bone.

Merik turned to Zafir with a grin and an affirming sort of nod. "Great! I didn't think you'd seen me." He didn't bother keeping his voice down, as there wasn't a Dragonet on the sands that very second.
"The first two... a Gold and a Brown that could've been a Bronze. I think six boys were mauled, and I didn't even count the girls. There's been a lot of bloodshed. The Brown almost went after that poor healer fellow." He chuckled. "I don't know either of their Riders, but the Weyrlingmaster gave them a time trying to keep those two from fighting. Did I mention that; they almost fought? And this last Blue, he only scratched up one boy before he Impressed. People are grumbling about touchings all around, and I feel like I've missed something important. But stay on your toes, the Hatchlings so far have been out for blood." Maybe not intentionally so, but they'd sliced open more Candidates than Merik had even thought possible. It was best to be wary either way.

Not long after Redhath had claimed his did the American Paint Egg begin to shake. Perhaps the egg was small, but its efforts certainly weren't! Each movement was precise, not the least bit out down. The dragon inside was not frenzied at all, not like its siblings. It was in no hurry, no hurry at all. It bumped into the Kiger Mustang once and stopped its moving for a few moments.

While the American Paint Egg ceased, the other patchy egg began to move. Slightly larger, the Gypsy Vanner Egg moved with much more intention, its movements just as precise as its sibling. And then, with no great show at all, a dark blue broke the shell, struggling for only a moment before he was completely free of the egg. It was then the light patches became obvious; the young dragon was completely breath taking.

He did not make his way towards the candidates and instead, approached the American Paint Egg, slowly weaving his away around eggs. His sibling had resumed methodical movement and the blue sat and waited. And waited. And waited and then, only then, did a nose poke through. And a foot. And another foot. And with one finally smash, a patchy green, much like himself, stepped forth. The pair regarded each other thoughtfully and the blue gave his sister a nudge.

With what could only be called a look of exasperation, she started to move towards the girls, her brother following closely behind. Woe be the soul that tried to move in on his sister.

Raedue nodded in agreement with Merik. "It has been bloody. I'd say its almost good that you weren't here for those first two. They were just so angry. But you're here now. THat's all that matters anyway, right? The chance to impress." He shook his head lightly. Three hatchlings and all three of them have caused damage to at least one candidate. The odds for getting out of this in one piece were definitely getting smaller.

More, Arioth demanded, gaping her jaws wide. I must grow bigger and stronger than him. I will show him that I am better! How dare he glare at her like that! She would show him!

"He's not doing a sharding thing to you, Arioth. Even if he was, he couldn't take me from you." That thought warmed Rinfala, somehow. Arioth was full of fire and agenothree, but she was hers. There wouldn't be a boring day in either of their lives, now.

He is LOOKING at me. I will not have him look at me like that! Snarling, Arioth nearly choked on the next chunk of meat she gobbled down.

Rin gave her a flat look. "It won't kill you. Choking on your meat might."

The young runner snickered at how the newly hatched blue followed his green sister like a protective older brother. He'd heard of those human's who had a sister complex. It looked like it didn't stay just with humans. THough this boded ill for the girls. "I don't like this...." he whispered to his friends. "That blue doesn't look like he's going to let the girls who might impress his sister off easy."

With a soft giggle, she observed the pretty pair that had just hatched. After the bloody display of the first pair of siblings, this overprotective brother was almost a relief. A boy had been mauled dreadfully with the previous dark blue hatchling, and if the green darted for her new partner before this blue...perhaps there would be more maulings, after all!

Hands flexing eagerly, eyes alight on the pair, Inaari couldn't help but gently nudge Goran again. "See? I told you it might happen! Maybe one is for you!" Really, he was much too grumpy! Much like the old Candidate Master, who'd had a curmudgeonly spot in her big heart. The teen had already decided to take this one under her wing, and give him something to do instead of brood.

Certainly she'd done a bit too much of that to know how bad it was for you! No brooding would be allowed, she promised herself, and turned her mind back to the pair.

"Whups, looks like I"ll be back later," La said slightly apologetically to K'em, dashing off after Cordel when he set off for the newest victim. She bit her tongue as Cordel spoke to Jessan, because her own manner of addressing it would have been, frankly, 'Stupid, stupid stupid. Don't they teach you anything?'

Standing behind Cordel and watching him dress the wounds, she found her gaze drawn to the two new hatchlings and gasped at their colours. Oh, gorgeous.

---

Weylin was of the same mind as he watched the new pair, no sympathy spared for the idiot who got himself mauled for standing between the gorgeous Blue and his rider. The new pair made him smile a little bit; that was good proper respect to show a lady, even if they were both dragons.

All right; the mauling wasn't happening to him, only idiots, and this was exciting now.

---

At this point, Hanya was seriously beginning to regret standing at the back. "Shards, can anyone see what's happening?" she asked softly.

Another Blue and the first green, and both of them gorgeous! Vaythel couldn't help but grin--the two that Impressed to them would be very lucky indeed. The Green began to make her way towards the females, with the Blue following close behind. Vaythel stifled a chuckle at the protectiveness of the Blue, as it reminded him of his brother and he when Vaythel had been but a child. The happy memories restored his hope, and Vaythel stood on, waiting for the next eggs to hatch. Maybe he would Impress a Brown? Or possibly a Bronze? He recalled that Greens Impress to just about anything, so that was an option as well. He had to stay on the positive side of things for now, anyway--otherwise he might just break before the Hatching was over with.

Oh, two more out of the shell now, it seemed-- and again, much to Canth's relief, dragonets of a decidedly less violent demeanor. The first to arrive was another blue, dark and pretty, circling towards... another egg, it seemed? This was rather odd to note, but she watched it with a strange fascination. Apparently newborn dragons sometimes had a sense of patience as well as irritation: a suspicion confirmed when, sure enough, the second egg cracked a patchy little green.

Much like the queen and brown, these two seemed to lump in a pair of sorts... but no, the blue was acting more like a protective older brother than a sibling rival. It was oddly... touching, almost, she way he kept so close. Like so many of the times Canth had dealt with her smaller siblings and village children back ho-- ...

... She pushed that word and thought out of her mind all at once, shaking it off with a light shrug before setting her jaw and focussing on a light shift from foot to foot instead. So long as no one disturbed the little green, she figured they'd find their people quietly now.

Or so she hoped, anyway.

"What a change of pace!" Ollen exclaimed looking at the patchy blue and green. They did not look angry and bent on injuring a candidate. Although, it was still possible for them to accidentally bump and thud the others. Ollen stood very still as she watched the pair approach.

She did not want to be a victim in this hatching and she watched the dragonets with apprehension. She thought of the few dragons she had contact and wondered if these were how hatchlings naturally acted.

Firyal couldn't help hearing E'rik shout his friend's name. His voice was trained to carry over crowds, and carry it did. She smiled to herself for a variety of reasons. First and foremost that Mal had Impressed. He would never have to go though the nervewracking experience of a Hatching again. Not as a Candidate anyway. Lucky him. Secondly she smiled because E'rik claimed he had suffered debilitating stage fright when he came to the Weyr, and it would seem he had overcome it since then. Probably Dara's doing. She adored that brown dragon, and even if E'rik had turned out to be a total a** she would have been smitten with Dara in spite of his rider. She wondered if it was possible to befriend a dragon but not their rider.

And then her attention snapped back to the eggs on the sands as first one egg and then another began to rock. The blue that emerged first was remarkable with his dark and light patches on his hide. She watched with a great deal of interest as the blue waited patiently for the American Paint egg to hatch as it had attempted to do earlier. The relationship between the pair seemed to have formed in the egg. How did that happen? She knew dragons formed mental bonds with their riders, but how did they bond with each other from within the shell? Or did the bonding take place even earlier?

Her attention returned to the pair once more as they moved toward the girls. Firyal was in the front of the girls, and not too keen on being mauled a second time. Her weight was already on the balls of her feet and she was ready to move aside quickly if either of the pair showed signs that she was in their way. She just hoped she'd be able to interpret the signs correctly and in time.

Distracted by the recent arrivals, Sen turned to where she could get a better look, then stood on the tip of her toes to peer over a particularly tall individual in front of her. She couldn't help but laugh at the sight, and this time, it was funny.

"The little green seems anti-social," she said to no one in specific.

Merik ignored Zafir for a bit to watch the two newest Hatchlings- a Green and another Blue, though they were both decently sized. Even having been alive for mere moments, the two seemed very close. He didn't even think their bond could pose a problem for the girls, just regarded the two as sharing a penchant for female Riders, and supporting eachother in the lonely first moments of life. They seemed very sweet, good and sure in their movements. Not completely mad like the last few. Neither looked like it had much interest in him, but he liked this steady pair especially, and found watching them much more interesting than chatting.

They were better than the rest. That was a given. Kagiya had known that she was better than the rest, but only now had Dolmin risen to her standards of best. They could be friends now. ... They were friends. "Bet they woulda! That's 'cause they're wherries an' scared, an'... we're better," she asserted smugly. Good. She needed a friend who was as good as she was. ... Almost as good. It was hard to meet Giya's exacting standards, but maybe he'd prove it over time. "They didn't come, so they're gonna miss out. But we don't we know they've gots a Blue an' a Green."

And that the little Queen, Brown, and other Blue had Impressed, too. They'd seen the blood, and they'd heard the screams. Was there nothing that they had not seen? Their parents might not approve, but that didn't matter so long as they had the inside information. "D'you think they'll Impress fast?" she asked Dolmin, nudging her friend curiously. She wasn't too scared now, not that she had found her courage. It seemed like he wasn't either. Good.

--

"Oh look," Vera said, pointing out toward the Hatching Sands. "A Blue and a Green!" Beautiful little creatures. Truly lovely. And there was Mal with his gorgeous darling, and she couldn't be happier. Especially as it seemed to her that S'van was speechless with glee at this point. Good. He wouldn't be saying anything else to upset Marko with. They really, really did not need that. At her side, S'van was making incoherent giddy noises, clearly nearly as excited now as he had been when his best friend O'asis had Impressed.

Westren wouldn’t deny that he was slightly relieved when the angry Gold and Brown Impressed, followed by the annoyed Blue. He was beginning to suspect that this would not be the end of angry Hatchlings, a thought that made his pulse quicken. He had said once that he would be honored to have any dragon for a partner, and he stuck by this, but he had foolishly never contemplated the possibility of having an angry dragon partner.

‘ Mine?’

Quinnel slouched in the stands, watching her brother with a blank face. Some would likely find it strange that she was not swaying, or humming, or grinning like a fool. In fact, her body language was nearly the opposite of normal: her shoulders were tense, her eyes narrowed, and her lips pursed ever so slightly, making it obvious that Quinnel was quite aware of what was going on and was worried for her brother. She had missed the last Hatching and was grateful that her brother had not fallen ill, but it would seem that in the absence of disease, a new danger had presented itself: angry dragonets.

‘ Mine, what has happened.’

Realizing that she had been ignoring poor Winath, who had decided to stay outside the Hatching Grounds, Quinnel sent her a faint wave of affection.

‘ A very large brown hatched, then a Gold. Both were angry, both hurt Candidates.’ Quinnel paused, squinting at the girl standing beside the new Gold. ‘ Not all bad. The Queen went to Rinfala; nice girl.’

Another angry Hatchling – a Blue – and another Impression.

‘ An angry little Blue has Impressed too.’

‘ Your clutchmate?’

‘ Safe. So far. A Green an Blue have hatched. They do not seem angry.’
