Ugh... A winced passed over Shinratsu as he felt his heart rate suddenly becoming almost painful...the note he dwelt on faltered, but again he ignored it and the music continued, growing stronger in melody. Elruda wasn't paying attention to the music now... She had noticed. But he didn't want her to notice...she was so excited about this audition...as the partner she had chosen, Shin didn't want her to suffer disappointment - especially not after the crew members considered her fitting for the heroine's role.

The tone of the music had changed again. And this time, its sweet melody was addressed to all those listening...a quiet reassurance, a certain strength...like the gentle buds of spring blooming into flowers of every kind... Like the cowardly lover in the legend, who could not tell his dearest person how much he loved her... Soundless words, a tacit understanding - a mutual connection of the souls that could only be expressed through his music. Indeed, it was beautiful...capturing the mood of the scene exactly... The serene dance under the moonlight, a contemplative mood...a distant, yet desperate plea... Not heart rending nor hopeful as his two previous performances...but somewhere balanced in between. The notes of the flute would glide smoothly in some parts, slipping away quieter, like the dying swan...before gradually growing stronger again...

The notes dimmed to a comfortable diminuendo and then gradually to a stop. Well. That was some start. He hadn't performed the whole song, true, but the second movement was crystal clear and brought to a comfortable cadence. Shinratsu casted a side glance at the crew, who were busy discussing his performance with each other. To be honest, he didn't really mind the criticisms...it was true. This was a handicap. However...after a few long moments, he was surprised to see the acting director address him. His heart skipped a beat. What? They were considering him...? But of course, there was a catch... If he would mix in a couple moments of accompaniment dancing during the pauses between the flute movements, the orchestra could fill in before he begins again... In short, his final test would be one on coordination.
The crew began showing him at which places he should stop and wait for the orchestra to sound and at which parts he should pick up again. Shinratsu's lips pressed tightly together - he had not failed to notice that they had conveniently forgotten to mention for how many measures do the orchestra fill in... So, he demanded for a complete copy of the song: that had the flute part and the accompaniment. They gave it to him.

He was allowed a few moments to look over the song. Even though the level of the music he was playing was at intermediate difficulty, Shinratsu poured over the notes easily, committing them to his sharp memory. In less than ten minutes, he told the crew that he was finished. They seemed a little surprised: they had expected that he would take at least half day. So they asked him, if he was sure...to which the Hyouton prince just scoffed and said nothing. Since he insisted, they allowed him to perform the final portion of his tryout.
Since not all of the orchestra members were present, they only had an accompaniment on the harp and another on the bagpipe. Shinratsu didn't mind though. That just makes his job easier too. Placing his flute gently to his lips, elegantly suspending the instrument between his fingers, his eyes softened to his usual half-lidded expression...and Shinratsu began his song. In the background, Elruda seemed a bit fidgety. She knew very well that this was the last determining testing factor...
If he could do it, there was no reason that they would bar him from being her partner for the play.

The notes floated out smoothly, comfortably, cascading out gently like the waves to the shores of Kiri... The song he was playing was a comfortable pace: not too fast nor too slow. Just right, setting the pace for a fairly slow but beautiful dance... Here and there the harp player added elegant flourishes and Shinratsu...he was initially surprised to hear the odd music of the bagpipe join in to the song. He did not falter, but it was...strangely pleasant to hear the music of the other woodwind and the stringed instrument complementing so perfectly with his song's melody.
Then came closer to the part where he must stop... The tempo of the song picks up quickly, almost abruptly, but the smoothness of the transition is never broken. In short, it was the trickiest part to perform. Shinratsu brought the melody to a diminuendo as it drew closer to the closing cadence of the first movement.
The transition movement was next, and the harp player picked up her speed, and, as she gradually dropped it, like a gently swinging see-saw, the bagpipe player added lovely bits of transitional melody here and there. Closer... It's almost time for him to pick up. There. The notes floated out smoothly but at the quick speed of the second movement - while the first movement was contemplative, as it should be to complement the geisha dancing under the moonlight, the second movement was rather doleful - the geisha and her dearest person...locked in a hopeless love.

Before he knew it, the song has ended. Regret washed over him in waves...he wished it could last longer. But from the reaction of the crew...he knew he passed. The sheer beauty of the song and its three performers...but mainly from how well done the flute, which played the main melody, was done...it drove tears to many of the listeners' eyes. For this song...this scene...was also the last scene the hero and the heroine spends together...after the night, it will quickly draw to its climax - and then to its tragically beautiful ending. For some reason...this scene...it feels as if...as if there was something so solidly real behind it...
An unreadable expression had crossed Elruda's face. Saying nothing except for the polite excuse, she got up and left the room.

Dammit... Why didn't she think of it until now? In the restroom, Elruda was angrily glaring at the running water before, dipping into her hands under the icy water, splashed some on her face. She ignored the fact that some droplets soaked her lovely outfit... She hated it. She hated just how... Why did he have to... No, she was being unreasonable. It wasn't Shin's fault...it wasn't Shin's fault that his music reminded her... The tragic love story of the heroine...it was just like her mother with... Her eyes grew sad. And the geisha's danna... Angrily, she kicked the wall. Why...? Why does she have to think of that now? It wasn't her fault that she remembers it so vividly, she had been old enough then after all...three years ago...
Ake...ru...
A sniff left her lips. That's right...she shouldn't think about him.
It was forbidden, after all.
Her mother's story told enough...
"El-ruda-hime...?" Shin's soft voice floated in through the door, from the corridor. He was there, standing at the door, looking highly uncomfortable. Shinratsu did aim to do his best in the auditions...but he hadn't considered Elruda thought he had outperformed her... His intention certainly wasn't to make her cry. What...what was wrong? Surely, if she doesn't want him to, he'll be more than glad to drop...
Elruda quickly splashed cold water over her face, before rubbing it furiously with her sleeve. "I-it's nothing..." She was glad that she was able to keep her voice as steady as she did...however...
"Gomen nasai. If I had displeased Elruda-hime in any..."
"No. That's not it..." She looked away. "And stop addressing me that way...half my family believes me to be dead, I'm probably not even the official heiress anymore."
A soft pause. "Then...what is...the matter?"
"..." Her next words were chosen carefully. Expression growing distant again, she replied: "I didn't realize...that the scene would be so sad..." And without saying another word, she walked past him.

Her reply wasn't cold...nor was it indifferent...there was just...an unreadable note in her tone, a equally unreadable expression on her face... As if...as if the scene just made her remember something about the past... Shinratsu sighed, rubbing gently at his temple. Girls...they were hard to please.
Elruda hadn't gotten very far when heavy arms wrapped around her neck. Eyes widening, she did the first thing which came to mind.
She screamed.

W-what the...? Elruda! Crashing the restroom door open, Shinratsu found himself alone in an empty hall. "Dammit!" He cursed, his fist crashing into the nearby wall. Of course, it probably didn't injure him, as he was wearing thick metal gauntlets. Never mind that! He had to find her...otherwise, how would he look Yokou in the eye? His eyes swirled crystalline blue. Whoever took her couldn't possibly have gone far... His field of vision was limited to normal here in a non tempest area, but he was still able to see the pattern of air.
An abnormality...look for an abnormality...

There!
Eyes returning to normal, Shinratsu suddenly whipped out a kunai. The weapon split through the air, cutting cleanly through the air, and struck the culprit just as he had attempted to move out of the area. Caught off guard and the sudden pain from being impaled by a metal blade...the culprit fell to one knee and let go of Elruda, who in turn, after connecting a kick with that man's stomach, retreated back...to beside Shinratsu. A muscle twitched in the corner of his mouth. It was none other than the general director from before, who was ogling Elruda earlier. "You sleezball." Shinratsu growled, cracking his knuckles. The kunai hadn't hit a vital point. Good. Then he can give this lecher a beating he won't forget...

A foot landed on the director's head. Sure, Shin wasn't wearing boots thankfully...but that didn't make the wooden samurai clogs any less painful to feel. "You dirty, low-down..." He went through a list of insults, as Elruda watched, sweatdropping...even perhaps feeling a little sorry for the receiving end of the beating... "...never, ever mess with a shinobi..." Kick, kick. "Filthy ***** would have thought the director of such a famous filming company...a lolicon..." Kick, kick.

"S-shin-k-kun..." Elruda began, futilely tugging at the raging boy's yukata sleeve, as if that could somehow prevent him from doing something he would probably regret... But fortunately, that task would not be in her hands. The rest of the play's crew had shown up.
"Aren't you stupid now?" Commented the stage crew head, to the injured director. Another manager sighed. "That idiot..." "You know..." Continued the stage crew head, a frown on her lips. "Just cause I told you to substitute our missing person for the fight scene..." Her voice trailed off.
"You didn't have to go straight off and kidnap the heroine." She finished flatly.

She turned her attention to Shin now. "So yes, will you two be..." But her proposal for them to attend the first rehearsal never even was finished...
Shinratsu scowled, interrupting abruptly. These people... "No, we're not interested. Have a nice day!" Still scowling, and dragging Elruda along by the hand down the corrider, Shinratsu stormed out the front door.
A terrific crashing bang, of the shutting grand doors, marked their departure.

Because she was so unfortunate Sakeme was shoved into another room. Upon entering another stood, shrouded, in a corner. This person would be Sakeme's opponent in the next test.
"Alrighty now... look who we have here... A little heroette?" A small smirk played across the lips of the girl who stepped out into the light. As she came closer it was easy to tell that the new girl could beeasily called a stunt double... someone who looked similar, but was no identical.
In the distance the director called out, "Alright girl... you're fighting your clone to prove that you are the real you... and ACTION!"
With a sadistic smile, the girl attacked. It was only a matter of time before she would throw the first punch, but would Sakeme be taken by surprise and get hit?

Sakeme rolled her eyes. What luck... I get stuck fighting... what is she? My clone? Give me a break, would anyone fall for this crap? As soon as the other girl started running at her it was obvious she was going for a full frontal attack. Her body practically screamed it. Though she wasn't a taijutsu specialist... she could dodge, almost pulling a matric by bending backwards as she did and pulling back up in time to throw a fresh strike as the "clone". "I hope that knocked a tooth out..."
