Kirin pulled out an old but clean tea set and used magic to create the tea. He made three cups, took one, and put the other two in front of Garin and Sanvi.
Those two might not have known, but the tea contained an herb that Kirin remembered Sanvi was allergic to. When she drank the tea, it would make her pass out.

Garin carefully took one of the cups and sniffed the tea, making sure there wasn't anything weird in it.

The herb would have no effect on Garin, and he shouldn't have been able to sense that it would do anything bad.
Sanvi picked her cup up, pretended to take a delicate sip, having smelled the herb, and put it back down, going back to her book.

Garin sipped the tea when he found nothing funny in it. "Thank you," he said.

"Fancy that herb being in the tea," Sanvi muttered bitterly. She stuck her nose into her book, reading about magic circles.

Since Sanvi hadn't touched the tea she'd be fine.
"Where did you live with the Kidens?" Kirin asked. "When did you go to them?"

"I am sorry," Kirin said quietly. He didn't continue the conversation, anticipating Garin asking something about how Sanvi ended up with Jace.

Kirin coughed, avoiding the answer.
"Jace kicked him out of power as the clan leader and made a deal that if I went to Jace papa would be allowed to live peacefully," Sanvi said dryly. She stood up and snapped the book shut.
