They were in the front room for once, where Ice was eating lunch. Aleric sat by calmly, pulling the strands off of a piece of pineapple as he watched the argument.

"Look, I'm sure nothing's going to happen. If they take you from me, chances are good that you'd die. And what use would you be then?" She asked, sounding a little too logical for his tastes.

"They probably esperiment on feien before they die. It is a military, after all." Aleric said calmly, his affection for science fiction tinting his view. "It would be interesting to see how they incorperate feien into a hostile situation like that..."

"You're not helping, Aleric." Ice said, her right eye twitching. Aleric was usually the calming influence in this group... she wondered where she had gone wrong.

"Forgive me Ice. A hostile alien militia." Aleric said.

"That's even worse, Aleric." She replied, rolling her eyes. "Look, I'll see what I can find out, but it might take a while. Until then, try not to worry, okay? I'll set up the surfing pool for you and you can have a day in the sun or something."

She turned, heading for the back door, completely ignorant of the strange look on Silva's face. Aleric noticed, moving closer to the other feien in case his question was overheard. "What are you thinking?" He asked the taller feien, suddenly worried.

"Nothing much. We'll stop by the shop after I get some surfing in." He said, his tone not allowing for disagreement. But this time it didn't matter. Aleric was thinking the same thing.

They went outside, heading for the pool that Ice was filling and dropping down on the concrete to watch. "We need to get Aleric his own board, don't we?" Ice asked over her shoulder as she flipped on the water pump. "That way both of you can surf at the same time."

"If we're still here, that is." Silva drawled, earning a dark look from Ice. "You know, they'll have a problem with a**l probing, won't they?" He said, looking over his shoulder at himself. Aleric coughed, looking away.

"Silva..." Ice said, rolling her eyes. "This isn't like the movies. I doubt there will be... probing involved." She finished filling the water, turning off the hose and heading for the door. "Now I've got writing to do, so you two can hang out here, okay? I'm sure Nick and Nack will be showing up sooner or later." They nodded, Silva heading for the sand in the pool, dropping down to make himself comfortable.

"Not surfing?" Aleric asked, grabbing the board from the sand. "Then I'll go first."

Silva grunted, his eyes closed as he laid in the sand. "You ever get lucky old man?" He asked, making Aleric turn for a second.

"No." Aleric said, thinking of all the unlucky things that had happened to him. "Not really." And the draft just topped the cake as far as he was concerned.

"I haven't got laid since I was a kid." Silva muttered, his voice deep in his throat, a hint of irritation ringing in his tone. "And I'm damn near a year old."

"Hmm." Aleric said before mounting his board and getting into the water. As far as he could remember he'd had neither a childhood or a "lucky" moment. Silva didn't know how lucky he was.

"What about that blonde of yours? The one whose name doesn't fit her?" Silva asked.

"I'm afraid I haven't seen her since that time in the shop." Aleric said, swimming into the waves.

"Sorry about that." Silva muttered, sounding half asleep. Aleric blinked, not sure she had heard correctly. There was something bothering the other feien, he thought with a sigh. But it seemed to be too old of a wound to be healed easily.

"I'm sure I will see her again... someday." Aleric replied, slowly standing on the board as the waves got large enough. He would get surfing down even if it killed him, he thought, determined. Just about the same time the waves knocked him off of the board.

When he came to it was to the sight of an irritated looking Silva glaring down at him. He coughed up water, turning to the side to spit it out, then took a deep breath.

"Really old man, why in the hell can't you get this?" Silva demanded, pulling away. He was wet, Aleric thought idly.

"I guess I'm just not very lucky." Aleric said when he finally felt safe to speak.

"Yeah. You aren't."

I don't know what's going on. I went up to the store this morning and the sign said it was closed. And there's a new... office building place across the street that looks like it's opening up. But what do I tell the boys? Oh, right, yea, I work there. But that doesn't mean I know what's happening.

Suuuure, Silva would appreciate that. *sigh*And they were just starting to get to be friends. I was watching them without their knowing the other day. Silva actually saved Aleric's life. I never would have thought it possible. I just... I just don't know what I would do if they were taken from me... And I was hoping to get a third. A bloom again...

I wanted to see how Silva dealt with a child. I wanted to see if it would soften him. But now... now I'm not sure I'll ever get the chance...

Aleric's Journal
Silva saved my life. I'm surprised... shocked, actually. But that's not important. The feien shop is closed. Silva and I went over the other day. The shop is closed. I have yet to tell Ice, but I'm sure she already knows. So the draft has begun.

I wonder when they will come for us. I will miss this place, this family, my life. If this is my last few days in this world I suppose I should make the best of them. I will try to find a way out of it. It's not like me to go down easily. Nor is it like Silva.

I regret never having children. And as Silva said, I would like to go with no regrets. But somehow I doubt that is possible.

"Sooo..." Aleric started out. They were sitting on the edge of the surfing pool, or at least he was. Silva was towling off. "If we are drafted..."

Silva grunted, drying his hair quickly before turning to him. "You really think they'd want a b*****d like me?" He paused, pulling his toothpick out from behind his ear. "Now you, on the other hand..."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Aleric asked.

"You're the golden boy, right? The perfect son. Hell, think I saw that movie... but if they're going to take anyone, it's going to be you." There was a smirk crossing his face. "So see ya."

"If they're drafting all feien I highly doubt you'll be left behind." Aleric said calmly. But Silva's attitude about the whole thing was slightly amusing.

"Sure, sure. Whatever." Silva snorted. "You want the board?"

"No thank you. I don't think I'm up to drowning today." Aleric said. "It's true, if we are drafted I doubt we will be seperated. At least very far. But I worry about Nick and Nack." He glanced over at the two boys playing in the water. "Nack will miss you."

Silva twitched, his expression darkening as he chewed on his toothpick. He walked over to Aleric, effectively blocking the sun from the sitting feien's eyes. "Don't ever mention that again."

"Mention what?" Aleric asked, innocently.

"That brat's..." Silva motioned with his hand, as if having trouble coming up with the right word. "Damned obsession with me." He dropped down onto the sand, his wings moving to help dry himself. "When he was a kid he scared the s**t out of me."

"How?" Aleric asked, sensing another one of Silva's untold stories.

"You know where the hotspot is, right?" Silva asked, his voice lowered. "It's not the same for feien as it is for humans, all you have to do is touch a few spots and you're good. Well one night the little s**t got it into his mind to go to the feien shop. Without me."

Aleric glanced over at the skunk boy, cocking his head slightly. "And?"

"I found him. You know that rat they ride? Well I took the rat to fetch the brat back. And when he was riding behind me he..." He snorted, not quite looking Aleric in the eyes. "Leaned against my hotspot."

"...Oh."

"That all you can say?"

Aleric tried not to laugh... he really did. But the sound echoed through the air against his will, earning a dark look from Silva. "Shuddup, dumbass. You'd have had the same problem I did."

Aleric stopped laughing, but a slight smile played on his lips. "I wish I could have been there." He said. There were a lot of things they spoke about that amused him. A lot of things he had missed out on.

"I turn one on Sunday." Silva said, casually.

"Oh. Congratulations."

"Huh... maybe."

"What should we do to celebrate?" Aleric asked, expecting to be shot down. Silva didn't seem the type to celebrate such things.

"Don't know... I was thinking a bottle of vodka and a hentai marathon. Next best thing to getting lucky."

"Do you think Ice would agree with that, though?"

"How do you think I celebrated my last summonday?" He asked, shrugging. "Get her drunk enough and she starts laughing her a** off at tentacle monsters."

"Tentacle monsters?"

Silva just smirked.

Meeting Hamada
Earlier this morning...

Pavel Pavlovich Antipov surveyed the street below his new offices and watched the crowds pass by oblivious to the spectre of his form in the one-way window. Beside him stood Captain Maruo Hamada (Comm/Int) and Dr. M, a small, odd man whom Pavel considered his only living relative despite their never having shared any genetic forebears.

Pavel could see M reflected faintly in the window. The little man was bouncing up and down nervously, his hands stuffed deep into the pockets of his lab coat to hide their shaking. It only succeeded in making a curiously animated lab coat. "Jonathan," said Pavel, turning slightly so M would be reassured but keeping his gaze on the window.

The bouncing stopped but not the shaking hands. "Yes, Pavel?"

"You're unsettling me. Stop it."

"Yes, Pavel," replied M, his confirmation only minutely different from his question. The trembling of the lab coat quieted slightly.

Antipov let out a throaty sigh and rolled his head so the bones in his neck cracked. Four weeks he had been working on this project, four weeks of bitter arguments and arduous planning. He could hardly wait for it to be over. "Are the charges in place?"

"Yes, Pavel," said Dr. M. If he said nothing else, M could always be counted on to say "Yes, Pavel" even when he meant no. M's expression was strangely unreadable, eyes hidden behind thick sodapop glasses and mouth wrinkled into a slight frown. Antipov knew his relative was anxious.

The reason for M's anxiety was something both Antipov and Captain Hamada shared. Of the three, only Antipov's posture and expression concealed it. He was a professional. Had he been staring at the horrors of a nuclear explosion in Moscow he would have remained unflinching. Antipov was one of those unlucky few who had faced the peril of his own mortal demise and picked himself up afterwards. Compared to that, the rest of existence was hardly worth his time. Certainly the four weeks spent on the project fell into this category.

Now this first phase of the project was nearing its end and Antipov could get back to work. Most people would have considered this sort of project a vacation. Antipov considered it a hindrance. He was an important man, or so he told himself frequently, and his Directorship of the Intelligence Division confirmed his belief. Few appointments were so prestigious and certainly none was more integral to the war effort.

Antipov straightened, conscious of how he must he look in his tailored dark blue coat with its silver trim and black shoulders. He always liked to look prestigious during moments of historical significance. "Mr. Brinkley?"

The fourth figure in the room, obscured completely by a sub-phasic stealth shield, replied, "Everything's ready, sir." The voice was gravely and curt, leading to all sorts of speculation as to what the speaker might actually look like.

"Good," said Antipov. His attention turned from the crowd on the street to the building located directly beyond it.

Someone had thoughtfully put up a series of cones and caution tape around the faux-Tudor shop, a narrow but very important safety buffer for the people on the street. Antipov could not have cared less about their well-being. From his research he knew that he was looking at a crowd of pigs, one of the largest infestations of them he had even been subjected to. Several times in the weeks prior to this incursion he had considered the pigs and smiled cruelly to think of the bourgeois riches he would strip from them but he did not smile now.

Antipov opened his mouth to issue the order to blow the charges only to hear someone else's voice speaking.

"Shouldn't we at least check with the city authorities to see if there are any laws regarding building demolition?" said Captain Hamada. The Japanese man was looking directly at Antipov, having not noted the faint reflection in the window. His eyes were wide with concern.

Antipov's open mouth, so ready to issue the order, twisted into a grimace of anger. "Permits and papers. I am on the brink of a new revolution and you bother me with permits and papers?" His voice escalated into a shout too quickly. For a moment he had forgotten that he was standing inside a building talking to his subordinates and not outside rallying the mob to his cause.

Hamada looked offended. "I'm only suggesting it because this could have unwanted consequences later-- sir."

The nasal drone of Dr. M broke between them: "Are you sure this is not connected to your desire to see the shop location retained and used in some other capacity, Captain?"

As much as he valued M, there were moments when Antipov wished he would shut up and this was one of them. The shop's fate was sealed. Hamada's petitions for its reuse had been dismissed and there was no need to bring up the argument once more. "The building materials must not fall into enemy hands and that is the final decision of the Supreme Commander," said Antipov. "We will speak no more of it. As to the permits and local ordinances, I leave them to you to deal with later, captain."

Hamada looked as if he had just tasted something sour but he nodded. "Yes, sir."

Antipov addressed their fourth companion. "Mr. Brinkley?"

"Sir?" came the voice again, always ready and always on edge. Brinkley was a commander in the Assassin Core and his mannerisms reflected that.

"Are we still set to proceed?"

"Yes, sir."

Crisp and professional. A model subordinate. Antipov allowed his lips to begin curling into a smile. "Detonate the charges!"

There was a momentary delay as the order was relayed to the demolitions captain, just long enough to set everyone on edge. Then the entire structure of the feien shop erupted into dust particles. The cloud spread out across the street in the blink of an eye and turned the scene grey.

As abruptly as it began it was over, the dust settling into a thin layer over the screaming pedestrians. Now Antipov permitted himself an amused snicker. Behind him, Dr. M laughed in that peculiar, half-choking manner of his. Hamada just sighed and shook his head.

The explosion was perfect. Aside from the ring of dust stretching out into the street the debris (what little there was) remained perfectly contained within the narrow ring afforded it by the cones and caution tape. A small pile of shingles and twisted chairs was all the remained of the feien shop.

"Mr. Brinkley, please send my commendations to the demolitions captain for the show," said Antipov.

"I'll do that, sir," said Brinkley.

Antipov turned away from the window and looked at M. The doctor was still shaking with a combination of fear and laughter. He looked up at Antipov and went completely still for a brief moment. "Boom!" he said, and began to titter once more.

Antipov smiled again as he placed a firming grip on Dr. M's shoulder. "Yes, Jonathan. Boom. Careful now, you only have one lung left."

"Worth it," gasped M, and smiled merrily like a too-eager child. There were tears in the corners of his eyes.

Antipov took a moment to make sure M was not in any medical danger. Then he said, "The next step is yours, Captain Hamada."

Hamada straightened and swallowed. "Yes, sir."

Their eyes met for the briefest moment and then Antipov was gone, steering Dr. M out through the dimensional portal that flickered almost imperceptibly in the center of the room. The portal sealed automatically behind them.

Hamada looked down at the empty space across the street. There was a small curious crowd around it now that the danger was gone. He frowned to himself. He felt much like the former shop looked. This was not a job he relished. It was open, exposed, and involved a hefty bit of public relations. Hamada preferred computers. He was a technician at heart.

Then he remembered he was not truly alone and put on a look of grim determination. Time to work.

-------

The hubbub concerning the sudden demolition of the feien shop continued for several hours with a fluctuating crowd. Word spread throughout Gaia like wildfire. "Did you hear? A building just blew up!" "I wonder if it's part of a new special event?" "There haven't been any announcements..."

It was only after the crowd thinned and the chatter quieted that a sign appeared surreptitiously on the caution tape stretched between two cones:

"All feien, their bonds, and other interested parties are welcome at Battle Fleet Regional HQ located across the street."

Ice stared at the destroyed building, a blank look on her face. Silva and Aleric were sitting on her shoulders, both void of expression for a moment, until Silva spoke. "You know... that was almost enjoyable."

"Don't be an a**, Silva. Can't you see that Ice is traumatized?" Aleric asked calmly. He reached up, patting Ice's cheek. "Shhh, maybe we should see what's in that building over there." He said softly. Ice nodded, not really responding as she turned, heading for the battle fleet offices. She needed to know if she was out of a job or not.

The door, of course, opened when buzzed and revealed the dark, cramped stairwell leading up to the second floor.

"I think I've seen this movie before..." Silva said, smirking as he chewed on his toothpick. "There's this crazy b*****d that seems nice on the surface, then he tries to sacrifice--"

"Shut up, Silva." Ice muttered. But it was a sign of life. She took a deep breath and headed down the stairs, heading into the waiting room. She looked around for a moment, wondering if she should ring a bell or something. "Hello? Is anyone here?"

The waiting room was empty, but the first door on the right in the hallway leading back was open and from it came a moderate male voice, "Yes! Yes, I'll be right out!" A hop and a small crash later and a head appeared in the doorway. The man was around thirty, Japanese, with thick glasses. "How do you-- ah, I'm Captain Hamada, Maruo Hamada." He stepped further out into the hallway and extended his hand towards Ice.

He was average in height, dressed in a wrinkled tan uniform with blue and black shoulders, and seemed both eager and nervous. His eyes moved from Ice to Silva to Aleric and then back again.

Ice smiled slightly, taking his hand. But there was a hint of caution in her eyes as she replied. "Forgive me for coming in uninvited, it's just..."

"We noticed that the ond place was shot to hell, thought we'd see if we're getting drafted just yet." Silva interrupted coldly.

"Silva, could we wait until after we've told him our names?" Ice growled, his lack of manners clearing her head. "My name is Ice. These two are Aleric and Silva, my feien. I used to work at the shop across the way before it was destroyed. And I've been hearing rumors about what's going on, but frankly, I'm confused. I thought you might know something about what's going on..." She shrugged, making both feien grab her neck to keep from falling.

Hamada shook Ice's hand twice and released. "Yes, I've heard of you mentioned in the reports. Hopefully I can help clear up any confusion. I'm the S.C. of this project." He adjusted his glasses nervously and looked again to Aleric, whose appearance he seemed to find interesting. "Please, come into my office!" Stepping aside, Hamada gestured towards the open door.

"Yes, of course." Ice said, following. She could almost hear Aleric's and Silva's thoughts. "This place, it's really nice. Are there going to be feien visiting it like they did the shop?" She asked, looking around. She read the small gold sign quickly before they walked past it, slightly confused by what it meant.

"Yes, of course the feien of Gaia are welcome," said Hamada, closing his office door and ushering his guests towards his desk, oblivious to how repetitive he sounded.

Several holographic displays were hovering in the air above Hamada's desk which he quickly turned off with a wave of his hand. "Please forgive the clutter, I've been working on some paperwork, can I get you anything to drink?" A cup of steaming tea sat on the desk already, indicating either that Hamada's equipment was waterproof or that he was a very careless man.

No, I'm fine. Thank you." Ice said, she was looking around, as was Aleric, slightly awed by all the things in the room. Silva's eyes were unwaveringly focused on Hamada. "Wow... this is like one of those books you read, Aleric." she said to the purple feien, grinning slightly. "Are you an engineer or something?" she asked Hamada, glancing at him finally.

Hamada's face instantly dissolved into a joyful grin. "Yes, I have a degree in computer engineering. It's the primary focus of my work -- that and computer programming. I designed these systems here." He indicated the entirety of the surface of his desk. It was an impressive amount of equipment.

Aleric stepped off of Ice's shoulder, hovering slightly above the equipment. He looked up at Hamada, smiling. "You look to be very good at what you do, sir. I've never seen such complex pieces. Of course, so far most of my knowledge about technical things comes from books."

"I'm afraid I'm not that mechanically inclined. Aleric has to learn things on his own more often than not." Ice admitted. "Do you have a feien?"

"I have to be good, the fleet relies on me," said Hamada diplomatically. "I live with a feien named Johannes, he was one of the first five feien we bred in the Fleet. And yourself? Do you have any other feien bonds?" There was maybe the slightest hint of jealousy in Hamada's voice as he looked at Ice's duo.

"No, these are my two. I've had Silva since he was a bloom, and Aleric..." She paused, holding out a hand for Aleric to step onto. "Aleric is an ancient. I found his gemstone lying on the floor of the shop one day, and he came back to life. I haven't quite figured out how that happened, but I'm not about to complain."

"So... the... rumors about the draft... are they true?" Aleric asked, dropping down on Ice's hand. "Will we be forced to leave our bond?"

Hamada's eyes widened at the mention of an Ancient and he viewed Aleric with newfound respect. He had never met an Ancient before... "The, um, no. You won't be leaving your bond if you're still together at present. A few days ago we went through our surveillance and pulled every feien who was deemed to be in an unsatisfactory home. Since you weren't in that group you're staying where you are."

"Then..." Aleric paused, thinking of all the conversations he had had with Silva over the draft. He shrugged, a grin pulling at his lips the only sign of his relief. "That's good. I'm rather fond of my present home."

"I have to ask... I know that most of the summoner feien have left Gaia, how are you planning on breeding more feien?" Ice asked, figuring it was the best time to. "I know I had hoped that Aleric would breed sometime in the future, since he's an ancient. Of course, that would be up to him, but--"

"I would not mind assisting the feien race." Aleric said calmly. "But if there's no summoner--"

Hamada leaned forward on his desk so his elbows were resting on the edge and frowned slightly. He looked troubled by the question. "We have our own summoner feien," he said carefully. "Given the misuse of the process in the past, it's the official stance that breeding should be rigorously controlled by the Fleet. The best I can say for you if you want to breed is to volunteer yourself for selection, but you have no choice in when or where or with whom you breed." Hamada thought over his words, found them sufficient, and nodded his head slowly.

Ice nodded, looking at Aleric. "Aleric?"

"I do not remember my past life..." Aleric said calmly, looking at Hamada directly, "But I still have the genes of the past. In breeding I can pass on some of our past to the future generations. I get along with most people I meet, and have not met a feien yet that I would be adverse to breeding with." He glanced over his shoulder at Silva, a tiny little smile on his lips. "And I have met some that are more... difficult than others. As long as I was returned to my bond afterwards, I don't believe I would have a problem."

"Silva?" Ice asked, nudging her other feien with a finger.

"I'll have to think about it." Silva said grudgingly.

"Then I believe that is your answer." Ice said, grinning. "Aleric is very noble, don't you think?"

Silva snorted and a slight flush went up the back of Aleric's neck.

"Thank you," said Hamada, adjusting his glasses. "I'll note that down. About your employment, did you want to continue your job with us or terminate it with the closing of the previous shop?"

Ice blinked. "I would love to keep my job. It's a great excuse to throw feien parties and meet new owners. And I doubt Aleric would be happy if he couldn't help whenever he was needed. But with this place being as large as it is, are you sure you'll still need me?"

Hamada threw his hands down flat on his desk andleaned forward. "It would be an incredible weight off my back to have someone here to look over things. The offices are mostly self-sufficient and fully-secured, so you wouldn't have to do anything in that regard, but someone should be here to try and help people and I can't be here all the time. I have job responsibilities. I'll give you files of information so you can help people by answering questions and that sort of thing." Hamada's eyes were pleading as he looked over at Ice.

Ice grinned, not bothered by his job description at all. "Sounds great! And if I'm not here to answer I'm sure Aleric will be. Silva's a little... um... daunting to some of the other feien at times."

"He scares little children." Aleric added, remembering a few of their run ins with juvenile feien. Silva shot him a dark look. "He's quite good at it." There was a hint of laughter in his tone.

"Only if they're irritating." Silva replied.

Ice tried not to laugh. "We'll be happy to help." She told Hamada, ignoring the two feien.

"Thank goodness," said Hamada, sliding his hands over his desk to a machine that must have been an input device. Without warning, the various displays on the desk sprang into life. "If you give me one moment I'll get you a primer of all the new procedures. This is such a relief, I'd honestly rather be working on computer repairs than dealing with people."

As Hamada spoke his hands twitched through the air in inscrutiable patterns and the displays across the desk changed rapidly. A moment later there was a buzzing noise from somewhere on the ground. Hamada disengaged himself from the comptuer and looked odwn at his feet. "So that's where the printer went!" He disappeared behind his desk and returned a moment later with a slim stack of papers which he handed over to Ice. "That should be everything you or anyone else needs to know, and if anything isn't there you can go ahead and ask me."

Ice took the papers, wrapping her arms around them even as Aleric hopped back to his place on her shoulder. "Looks like I've got a lot of reading to do." She said, standing. "thank you for your assistance. You've dealt with a lot of our worries." She nodded, waving a hand under all of the papers. "And good luck with your engineering!" She called, already heading for the door.

"Thank you!" Hamada called after her, and sincerely hoped this would all turn out for the best. Now he just had to deal with the complaints from the city... With a sigh he went back to work.

The group was spread out on Ice's bed, at least the smaller group. Ice, Kisa and Jade were in the kitchen, baking cupcakes for the party in Ice's room. The sound of cries like "Aaaah! oooohhh...." and "uuuunnn..." came from the computer speakers. Silva was sipping a beer, leaning back against the pillow and looking extremely comfortable. Aleric was sitting on the edge of the bed, a slightly startled look on his face.

"This is the best part." Nick said, pointing from where he sat on the backboard of the bed.

"Can you turn it down, please? I'd rather not listen." Nack called from where he was sitting on the hope chest. As far away as possble.

"You bite, Nack. You should be watching this, you might learn something." Nick called back.

"Not all males are perverts, you know." Nack muttered, his cheeks bright red.

Aleric would have agreed, but he was still trying to tear his eyes away from the screen. It was disgusting... yet fascinating all at the same time. Offhandedly he wondered if Patience had survived the draft, then he cursed himself for letting Silva's baser interests affect him. He stood, turning and flying towards the door. "I'll go check on the food." He said, disappearing out of the room.

Silva snorted, not really paying attention to his "Brother's" comment. He should have been enjoying himself, he thought. He was irritated that he wasn't. Their little meeting with the Hamada guy the other day was still bothering him. There had to be something going on... something that they weren't being told about.

He was pretty sure that Ice had walked into their trap. He just wished he knew what the trap was...

"Cupcakes are ready! Could we please change the channel?" Jade asked, not even looking at the computer screen as she walked in with the treats. Kisa nodded, rolling her eyes.

"Where's Ice?" Silva asked, getting to his feet and stepping on the keyboard. The movie stopped.

"She said she'll be here soon. She was reading something that was really important." Jade replied, helping Kisa dole out the various snack foods.

Silva scowled. He had a pretty good idea about what she was reading... Those damn papers that Hamada had given her.

In the front room Ice sighed happily, flipping the page of her scif-fi romance. She had always had a thing for bad boys with tails...

Sunil was a juvenile, Ruya was a bloom, and Silva was starting to realize that he had lost his edge. He scowled, flipping the page of his hentai manga. He hadn't lost all of his edge... but some of it was definitely gone. He had actually felt protective of that b***h. Sure, she was a juvie now, but dammit, she was still Sunil. He should have beaten the s**t out of her like she had him when he was a kid.

And then there was Aleric. When did he start caring if the kiss up old man lived or died? And what in the hell had he been thinking when he saved his life? He flipped the page, not even bothering to read it. He was getting soft.

Another thing, what was he supposed to do when Ruya turned into a juvenile? Ignore her? Pretend that nothing ever happened between them? Hell, next thing he knew he'd probably be "Uncle Silva" who lives in the house behind them. It wasn't like he was dumb enough to tell her what they used to be.

"Oh, and by the way, we used to be lovers in your past life. But I was such an a*****e that you dumped me for Neruo. Then when we were talking again I skipped out for three freakin months at a time!"

Hell, maybe he should revert to bloom stage too. Forget all the bullshit he had been through.

...Nah. He'd wind up doing all of it over again. He sighed, turning the page back so he could try to read it again... or at least admire the pictures. He was done with relationships. No more girls, no more friends, and no more talk of raising a kid. He was too damn soft to raise a kid properly.

What had happened to him? Where had his smartass comments gone? The biting wit? Well, sure, it was still there, but he had mellowed. He was turning into an old man... one that would be stuck with his so-called "Brother" for the rest of his life, playing two piece chess.

He didn't even feel the urge to go visit a psychopathic killer... How pathetic was that? But he couldn't think of anything that might change him back. so he did the only thing he could think of.

He turned the page.

Tales of Silva
Tap tap tap. The tapping on the window was soft and subtle, gingerly made around the edges of the feien-sized door set into it. Through the glass Averno's face peered, distorted by the thickness of the barrier. "You're sure this is a door and we can go inside it, Arae?" She queried with a skeptical expression on her face.

"Indeed, Averno. I saw other fairies enter and exit through that egress the other day when I was watching the building. We should be able to pass." The green-haired ancient hovered in the air behind the darkness feien with a slightly uncomfortable expression. "I do think we need to proceed inside. We certainly can't go back to the shop as it was destroyed most violently."

Averno grunted at Arae and she straightened from where she'd bent to examine the bottom of the miniature door. She fingered the hilt of the plastic cocktail rapier on her him uneasily. "If they blew up the other shop, what makes you think it's safe for us to go in there?"

The question gave Arae pause and she blinked a few times as she worked it to and fro in her mind. "Well, for one, had they intended us harm, I think they'd have done so by now. They destroyed the old shop, a few feien certainly wouldn't pose any threat to them."

"Speak for yourself there, Captain Limeade." Averno retorted crankily. "I'm not a pushover afterall." Regardless of her derisive tone, the darkness feien pushed open the door and glanced through it warily.

Aleric floated through the air, his mind on the new project that Ice had told him of. An entire magazine dedicated to feien... It was a very interesting idea, no doubt. It also seemed like a good way to start a conversation with people he didn't know. One would just have to go "Did you read this article?" and you'd have a new friend. Or at least a good conversation.

He paused as he caught sight of two females near the shop, and smiled as he recognized Arae, flying over to them. "Good day to you, ladies." He called, waving.

Averno startled at the greeting from Aleric, but caught herself before she tumbled in through the open door. Her cheeks flushed with mingled anger and embarassment.

Arae smiled brightly at the familiar voice. "Aleric! It is good to see you again. I am happy to know you were not inside the shop when it was brought to such an abrupt end." The air feien slipped past Averno and into the HQ proper. "Is this news of an Empire of some sort and a battle fleet true?"

Averno grumbled and she stalked in after her fellow feien, stopping to watch the door close behind her. She frowned at the fact she could see out the window which was impossible to see in from the outside.

Aleric followed, blinking as the door almost shut on him, then slipping in behind Averno. "Um, yes, actually. So far I've met two of the new... owners? I'm not sure exactly what their titles are..." He turned, looking at the window as well. "Interesting... " Then he glanced back at Arae with a calming smile. "As of yet, those that haven't been drafted already will be staying on Gaia. It is good to see you two are fine as well."

"Then there is a draft? It wasn't just a rumor? I had heard such a thing was occurring, but when Averno and I came to the shop to ask about it, we found it destoyed!" Arae's face was troubled. "I hope no one was hurt when that happened."

"What are they trying to draft us for anyway? What the heck is an Emperial Whosa Battle Whatsa?" Averno folded her arms over her chest and moved to the edge of the window ledge, peering at the waiting room scrutinizingly.

"What I and my bondmate... and even Silva, actually, were told was that the fleet removed the feien whose households were not deemed fit for them to live in. I assume that means the feien were being abused or neglected. I am sure they would not destroy a building when there is life inside." He lied very calmly. In this case it was more important to calm those living than to worry about those that might have died.

"I am not... sure, exactly what the fleet is as of yet, but they seem to be very dedicated to their job. Hopefully that dedication will be given to the feien population, as well." He finished, thinking of Hamada's comment about having to be good, since he worked for the fleet. "They have provided us with a much more comfortable shop than the last. There is a kitchen and a lounge for us to use. Would you like to see them?"

"Oh my yes, a tour would be lovely. And I suppose when you put it in those terms, it sounds as if they were rescuing fairies from unfit households. Averno and I should be quite safe then. Sajhiri is a most caring and doting bond." Arae slipped her arm through Aleric's companionably. "Do lead on, dear friend."

Averno frowned darkly behind the pair and she craned her neck to see more of the waiting room. "Yeah sure, lead on. If we're part of some space fleet thing, will we get lightsabers, like in Star Wars? Or phasers like in Star Trek? Or even just good old blaster guns like in Battlestar Galactica?"

Arae chuckled and murmured under her breath to Aleric, "Pay Averno no mind. She has been watching too much Sci Fi channel and Sajhiri's DVD collections."

A slight flush crept up the back of Aleric's neck and he grinned sheepishly. "Actually, I've been wondering the same thing. I'm a sci fi fan, myself, you see. I've been trying to figure out how they would make those things on feien scale, though."

He led them slowly towards the map, pointing up at it. "That's the basic layout of the offices, we'll go down this hallway to the kitchen first. I haven't gotten the chance to see what's in there yet. Unless you'd rather go somewhere else?"

Arae smiled sweetly at Aleric and patted his forearm. "The Kitchen sounds like a good starting place. I haven't had anything to eat today as I was out in the gardens swimming in the pond for most of the morning."

Behind the pair Averno made mocking faces, silently repeating Arae's words in an uber melodramatic manner. Nevertheless she followed them.

"Swimming? It sounds like a wonderful way to spend the morning." Aleric said. This was actually one of the (very) few polite conversations that he had ever had. He didn't want to mess it up, but he couldn't help but ask. "Do you surf? We've got a small pool set up in the backyard, with a motor that makes waves. Unfortunately I tend to fall off of the board..."

He stopped at the kitchen door, looking in before entering. "But if you're hungry then we should raid the fridge." Yet another of his family terms creeping into his speech, he thought with a sigh. Oh well, no use pretending he was anything other than what he was...

Arae looked rather intrigued by the odd words flowing from Aleric's mouth. She had been without human company for ages, and was only recently beginning to assimilate their cultures in her newly bonded state. "Surf...ah...I think I saw that on Sajhiri's television once. You try to stand on a board in wavy waters? It sounds interesting but it looks rather dangerous." She smiled nonetheless.

"Hey lovebirds, I think something about the fridge and food was mentioned? Lets get on with it," Averno hissed in a disgruntled tone. Her wings flared behind her in agitation

Aleric laughed. "It can be." He said, gently pulling away from Arae and opening the fridge. He wasn't as strong as Silva, but this was easy enough. "Thankfully I have people that save me on a regular basis." He finished, motioning for them to help themselves as he held the door.

Arae flapped her wings and leapt into the air so she could observe the contents of the fridge. She flitted from shelf to shelf before grabbing an apple wedge and a cheese cube from what looked like a fruit and cheese platter. "Well I am grateful that someone is looking out for you then Aleric. There are so few of us from the ancient times afterall."

Averno poked about the shelves herself and came out again with a devilled egg in her arms. She plunked herself down on the counter and began to nibble on the edges of it, carving off smaller bits with her rapier.

Aleric waited until they were out to go in and get his own food. The door swung closed behind him, but he ignored it for a moment, heading for the fruit platter and grabbing a few pieces of pineapple.

Arae alighted not far from Averno and settled comfortably on the counter, propping herself up with her wings so she could lean back in a more relaxed manner. She used her claws to carve a bit of apple then speared it to pop into her mouth. "So, how long did it take them to build this place? I don't remember it from my last visit to the Feien shop before it was demolished."

Averno continued to shove bits of egg into her mouth, giving the other two feien the occasional glare. She didn't give one whit about this place or when it popped up. She wanted to know if she'd get sci fi weapons to inflict damage on her enemies with.

"Hmm?" Aleric asked, letting himself out of the fridge. He headed for the counter as well, dropping down on the edge with one foot tucked under the dangling opposite leg. One piece of pineapple went on the counter, the other he started to eat. "I'm not sure." He said after swallowing. "I didn't go to the shop often, Silva dislikes it. But it was here before the other shop was blown up, obviously. I wonder if they have some sort of speed construction..."

He made a mental note to ask Hamada the next time he saw him. He was sure the man would be able to answer. "Probably alien technology. Imagine being able to build an entire building in a few days..." He took another bite as he marveled at the idea.

Arae pondered the information thoughtfully and she nibbled on a bit of cheese. "That would be exceptional technology, indeed. I imagine they could do much good with such abilities." She pushed a strand of her hair back out of her face idly. "So, is this Silva your mate?" she asked innocently.

Averno spit egg out all over the counter in front of her, coughing and gasping for air, her eyes watering as she inwardly boggled at the question Arae had asked. She hacked and gurgled and thumped a fist against her chest as she tried to regain her breath.

Aleric blinked, barely restraining from choking as well. "Um... no... actually, Silva is my... brother." He coughed, trying not to laugh. He glanced over at Averno. "I take it you know him?"

Averno finally regained control of her breathing and she grabbed a corner of a paper towel to wipe her mouth off with. "Unfortunately, yes. He and I know each other well enough. Rat b*****d wouldn't tell me his name for ages." She proceeds to wipe up the spattered egg from the counter.

Arae ahs softly. "So he is to you as Averno is to I? You share a bond?" The gentler fairy continues to consume her meal delicately

"That sounds like something he would do." Aleric told Averno, a slight grin pulling at his lips. "Yes, Silva and I share a bond, somewhat begrudgingly on his part, of course. He can be quite difficult to get along with at times." Understatement of the year.

Averno hissed "I never thought I'd sympathize with Silva..." before she flew over to toss the towel into the trash. She huffed and grumbled the entire way.

Arae smiled wanly after her and then looked towards Aleric. "Averno was not pleased that Sajhiri bonded with me. But I had no choice. I was dying as my magics that protected me from needing a human bond for so long had finally failed. She was the first human I reached and would have been the last as well, had she not helped I would not be here now."

Aleric nodded, understanding completely. "My situation was similar. I was a gemstone that Ice found on the floor of the shop. When she touched me I was reborn, minus my memories and a bond. She had no choice but to bond with me. And when Silva found out he was... less than pleased." Aleric admitted. "But we have... somewhat... overcome our differences. It only took almost dying in Mexico together."

But considering Silva's hobbies, it wasn't that surprising.

"You nearly died...? In Mexico?" Arae asked with wide eyes. "That sounds like a tale to tell my friend. I love to listen to tales of adventure. Promise you'll tell me of it sometime?"

On her return flight, Averno caught the last of the conversation. "Nearly died, hm? How did Silva get his fat out of the fire this time?" She smirked. Oh yes, Silva was a constant source of irritation for the darkness Feien.

"Ahh, but it wasn't us that were in trouble at the time. It was our bond. Silva decided to go visit one of his old 'Friends.' You see, Ice has a magical door that allows us to go to other places, almost anywhere, actually. And Silva has been using it for quite some time if his stories are to be believed."

He paused, looking thoughtful as he searched for the right words. "Silva isn't... like normal feien. The people he calls 'Friends' usually tend to be more dangerous than not. And when he went to visit Snake I decided to follow and make sure he wasn't hurt. But Snake found the doorway to get to Gaia..."

"Oh dear, with a name like that I'm not surprised he was trouble. Everything is in order now, though, I hope?" Arae looked at Aleric in concern.

Averno snorted "Leave it to Silva to unleash a maniac on Gaia."

Aleric nodded, but went on, enjoying the tale. "The door closed behind him, leaving us stuck in Mexico. We tried IM'ing Ice, but she was busy dealing with Snake. So we were stuck there until Ice's daughter.. um... distracted him long enough for Ice to hit him back into the door. We were in quite a bit of trouble for that one..." He laughed a little, remembering Snake's flying back through the door and slamming into the wall unconscious.

"But Silva decided that I was tolerable after that, I suppose. He hasn't tried to kill me again since then, at least."

"He tried to kill you!?" The gentle feien seemed utterly shocked by that. "He seems a most disagreeable sort. I don't think I'd ever like to meet him in truth. I can't imagine anyone hating you, Aleric. You are a gentleman and a kindly soul."

And so begineth the eye rolling on Averno's part. She began sniffing about the kitchen just to get away from the sentiments Arae seemed to spew non-stop. All sweetness and light, that one. Averno was tired of feeling awkward and childish around her.

"Silva lives by a code of his own." Aleric said, frowning slightly at her assumptions. "He saw me as an intruder on the family that he takes care of. And since he is, in all reality, the man of the house, he felt he had to rid himself of a potential threat."

He wondered if that was understandable to such a sweet fairy as Arae... "You see, he has very few people that he loves, but those that he does are protected to his utmost ability. And if that means killing a threat, then..." He shrugged, doubting she would agree.

Arae pondered a long moment. "But Aleric, what wisdom is there in killing all perceived threats, if your perception is so horribly skewed as to thing a gentle soul a threat? He sounds to me as if he needs help."

Averno glanced over at the clock and she yelled back "Ok lovebirds, break it up! We need to get back to the tower before Sajhiri gets back from taking the brats to the doctor!"

"Silva is not as trusting as most, either." Aleric replied, shrugging. "To him a kind manner could conceal deception as easily as an unkind one. Trust must be earned." He stood, bowing to them both. "It was wonderful talking to you both. I look forward to our next meeting."

Arae rose and gave Aleric a warm hug. Perhaps she first emerged from her bloom in the 60s. "Well, one cannot earn trust if they are dead before they have the chance, hm? Take care of yourself my friend. I hope to see you again soon." She leapt from the counter to wing her way back to the waiting room and the feien-sized door.

Averno followed but paused by Aleric. "Don't let her get to you. She hugs everyone. All. the. time. It's annoying as all get out." She stuck her tongue out in a comical grimace before flapping her wings and flying after her co-bond.

He nodded at Averno's words and waved, but still a slight flush crossed his cheeks and a smile pulled at his lips.

"What's with..."

"He's in a bad mood."

"But... why?"

"Hell if we know."

Silva tried to ignore the voices, flipping the page of his manga again. Yeah, he was in a bad mood. And he damn well wasn't going to give it up any time soon. He was only now starting to feel somewhat normal.

"Have you offered him cherries?" Aleric asked. The very question made Silva twitch, but it wasn't a bad idea... some cherries, maybe some ice cream... He paused, never noticing the slight grin that pulled on Aleric's lips as he used his empathy.

"He's not talking to anyone right now. Just been reading that same book for the past couple of hours." Nack said. "Where have you been?"

"Treating two beautiful women to a fridge raid." Aleric said, trying not to laugh at Silva's reaction. The other male was jealous for a second. "One of them knew Silva. Averno?" It calmed Silva down quickly enough. Last thing he wanted to do was run into Averno when he was feeling vulnerable. "Arae was with her." Aleric said, flushing ever so slightly.

"She your girlfriend?" Nick asked.

"Why, no, she's just a very good friend. A very sweet... beautiful... good friend. As is Patience and Hari and--"

"The old man has a lot of female friends, huh?" Nick asked Nack, earning a nod. "Lucky b*****d. Think Silva does?"

"I've got a couple." Silva said, putting his manga down. "They just happen to be evil incarnate." He tried not to laugh as Quantel and Sunil and Averno came to mind. He hesitated at the thought of Ruya, then shook it off.

"Why don't we have any beautiful female friends?" Nick asked, pouiting.

Nack just shook his head, heading for the door. "I'm going to get the cherries."

"Yeah, yeah. I'll help. Wanna play tennis afterwards?"

"We'll have the cherry pit for the ball!"

Silva picked up his manga again. His perfectly good bad mood ruined. Dammit.

The Viper Pit
Silva
Silva paused in mid-flight, looking up at the Fleet building once again. Ice was stuck in her room, obsessing over one of her novels again. Her total concentration seemed to interrupt his work out for some reason..

Although he honestly had no idea why. He shook his head, glancing over his shoulder to see if Aleric had followed him. Oh, wait... the purple feien had said something about doing some writing. He'd disappeared into Kia's room sometime early in the morning.

So Silva was alone. A little smirk pulled at his lips as he headed for the buzzer. Just the way he liked it.

Sunil
After a few days of general disorientation, which seemed to be the worst when she first woke up, Sunil was feeling more herself - whatever that meant. At the very least she had been able to sneak out of the house while Zayne played court to a large group of cowering stuffed animals. As a result she was currently winging her way in the direction of the building which now apparently served as a feien meeting place.

As she neared the building, she spotted a familiar looking pair of maroon wings.

"Silva," she muttered, crossing her arms over her chest. "Figures."

She pulled up short behind him, saying nothing - assuming he would notice her.

Silva
He pushed the buzzer, then headed in. There was another magic power behind him, a familiar one. But he didn't look back as he spoke. "What? No brat this time?"

Although technically she WAS a brat in her current form...

Sunil
"No," Sunil responded. "Not this time."

The fact that he hadn't looked back rankled, but she was more than aware of the fact she wasn't currently in a position to fight with anyone. Especially not someone, who if she recalled correctly, had managed to hold his own when they were smaller than her.

"You don't have your follower with you either," she pointed out, slipping in behind him. "He get sick of looking at you?"

Silva
Silva snorted. "Probably." He headed up the stairs, still not looking at her as he stayed oddly silent for a moment. "I keep thinking I should repay the favor from when I was a kid..." He said, finally looking at her. "And beat the living s**t out of you."

Sunil
Sunil drifted backwards quickly, trying to gain a little space between herself and Silva. While she wasn't helpless, she wasn't in practice - but screw it. Placing her hands deliberately on her tiny juvenile hips, Sunil gave Silva a sarcastic grin.

"Go ahead," she said carelessly. "I'm not afraid of you."

Reaching inside reflexively, Sunil pulled out what she needed to cast shield on herself and held it ready in case Silva took her up on her invitation.
Silva
He snorted, then laughed out loud. "You wouldn't have a chance this time, midget." He reached the next door, opening it as easily as if it had been feien sized. "Come on. Let's go see if they have any beer."

Sunil
Pissed, Sunil dropped her hands off her hips but stood her ground.

"I am not a ******** midget!" She yelled after Silva. "I'm a juvenile," she muttered, mostly to herself.

After a pause, she decided she was more thirsty than proud and followed after Silva.

"I don't believe I've ever had beer," she said. "I hear it tastes like crap."

Silva
"It does. But I don't have high hopes for finding the good stuff here." He replied, not bothered by her midget comment in the least. In fact there was a little smirk on his lips as he headed towards the kitchen.

He stopped when he got to the fridge, pulling it open and looking inside. "Nothing. Oh well." He went inside, grabbing the nearly filled jug of orange juice and flying towards a counter. He paused, looking at her. "My guess is that you can't drink from the bottle, can you?"

Sunil
"I can do anything I want," Sunil said peevishly, glaring in Silva's general direction. Not following his line of thought, she crossed her arms over her chest and asked, "Why wouldn't I be able to drink from the bottle?"

Silva
He put it down on the counter, then turned to look at her. The jug was at least ten times bigger than her. One of those family sized white plastic deals. "Hell, guess you could dive in..." He turned, looking for some feien sized cups.

Sunil
The jug was clearly too big for her to handle, but the impossibility of a task rarely stood in her way once Sunil got an idea in her head. Landing next to the jug, Sunil tugged on it in an attempt to - well, she probably hadn't really thought the whole thing out. If she had been perhaps a bit taller, she might have been able to pull the thing over and ended up squished underneath. Instead, the jug refused to move at all.

"Well," she said, kicking the jug. "Maybe I don't want any juice."

Silva
He snorted, grabbing a dixie cup from those available and dropping it down next to her. "Hold this still for me." He ordered, heading to uncap the jug and hoist it into the air again. "Are you holding it?"

Sunil
"I don't take orders." Sunil said, holding the cup steady by hugging it to herself. "I do what I want."

Silva
"All right, Darlin." He said, tilting the jug by hooking a leg under the lower part of the handle. The orange juice started to pour into the cup. He stopped after a few seconds, putting the bottle down. It wasn't much according to him, so she should be able to lift it.

Then he lifted the jug again, tilting it towards him this time to take a drink. Straight out of the bottle. Was he showing off? Hell yes. But it was as good as kicking her butt in his oppinion.

Sunil
Grumbling unhappily to herself, Sunil tugged at the top lip of the cup while watching Silva out of the corner of her eye. Stupid small body, she thought, giving the cup a particularly strong yank. She grumbled even more as the cup pulled out of her hands and righted itself, sloshing orange juice out the side and onto her.

After she shook most of the oj off herself, not unlike a wet dog, Sunil tipped the cup down so she could drink out of it - careful this time to pay attention to what she was doing.

Silva
He put the jug down and wiped his mouth off with the back of his arm. "Not bad." He said, capping the jug and hauling it towards the fridge. He had to hold it one handed as he opened the door. He put it up, eyeing the food and grabbing a grape from the platter. "Has Ruya turned into a juvenile yet?"

Sunil
Sunil slowly let the cup back up to its original standing orientation, having now re-learned some of the laws of physics she was relatively sure she already knew. Grinning a bit as the topic of conversation changed, she sat down on the edge of the counter and kicked her legs into the open air.

"Nope," she said, sounding satisfied. "Zayne can't figure out why either."

Her legs kicked a bit more.

"I don't know why you care. She must have gone back to a bloom because she didn't want to see anyone for a while. Why else make that choice?"

Silva
"They way I hear it, you didn't choose to become a midget. Who says she got to choose to become a bloom?" He dropped down on the counter next to her, looking at his grape before taking a bite. "She won't remember either of us, will she." He said. It was a statement of a fact, not a question.

Sunil
"Hrm." Sunil grunted, kicking her legs a little faster and letting her heels bang into the counter as she did so.

"I asked to remember who I was." She said finally, without any of the smug tone she had earlier. "I didn't want to start over. I have to assume Ruya is a bloom because she wanted to start over. We didn't discuss our choices."

She took a deep breath before looking at Silva.

"No, I don't think she will. Does that bother you?"

Silva
"When she changes... I want you to keep shut about the fact that we were... friends, got it? In fact, as far as she should know, I've never met her before in my life." He handed the grape over to her, not feeling hungry anymore, and pulled out his toothpick from behind his ear. "I'm just another b*****d feien she should try to avoid."

Sunil
Sunil snorted, putting a hand up to forstall getting the grape.

"I already told you I don't take orders. I'll tell her whatever I want to tell her." Sunil grinned, enjoying this finally. "And I'm relatively sure that our old journals still exist somewhere in the house. I'd be happy to show her all her entires on you."

Pausing a moment to lean back onto her elbows, Sunil thought about this new idea. She hadn't been sure what she would do when Ruya became a juvenile, but this line of thought presented some interesting ideas.

"Or maybe I'll just tell her what I want her to know. You really think you can pretend you've never met her? She'll be back to naive Ruya, unaware of anything you put her through."

Silva
He gave her a dark look, tossing the grape into the trash. "You're dirty, darlin. But I won't have any trouble. She's going to be a kid, right? Kids don't interest me." But the diary part--

"What do you want in exchange?" He asked reluctantly. "For keeping your mouth shut and the journals out of reach. Preferably burned."

Sunil
"You don't have anything I want." Sunil said, obviously pleased with herself. "Except for the ability to amuse me with your awkward interactions with Ruya."

She kicked her feet some more and began to hum tunelessly to herself the way Zayne did sometimes when she was thinking.

Silva
"Dammit, Sunil..." He burst out, turning to glare at her. "The last thing I need is for all my past f*ck-ups to come back and haunt me. Especially in the guise of a snot-nosed brat." His eyes went cold and he relaxed, looking away again. "Forget it. I probably won't see her much, anyways."

Sunil
"Someone's a bit touchy." Sunil giggled, oblivious to the stare. "C'mon, didn't you enjoy your time together?"

Silva
"Which time would that be? When she was messing around with Neruo behind my back or when she was yelling at me for being a dumbass?" He replied coldly.

Sunil
Unfazed, Sunil kept needling. "Is that why you kept coming around? Beause you liked it when she hurt you? I didn't think that was the case."

Silva
"Who the hell knows anymore. Maybe I am a bit masochistic. But she won't be the same Ruya, darlin. We both know that. And I'm not the same as I used to be, either." There was no way he was going to go back to playing tag like when he'd been a brat. He chewed on his toothpick thoughtfully.

Sunil
"I don't intend to put you two back together like some retarded match-maker," Sunil grumbled. "I just want to have something fun to watch. Everytime you hurt her, I got to have the little thrill of watching and sometimes pushing her a little more away from her confident self."

She sat up, feeling her ablility to get a rise out of Silva slipping away.

"Although the real fun will be watching her fall in love with someone else, won't it?
"

Silva
"It's not like it hasn't happened before." He replied bluntly. And hell, if it was Neruo, then it probably wouldn't even bother him. He snorted, picturing the other tall feien having to crouch down to present his flowers. "I never figured I'd end up as anything other than alone. It works for me."

Sunil
"I don't think it has," Sunil admitted reluctantly, her feet ceasing their movement. She looked at Silva, while she puzzled something out in her own head. "What did you plan to do if it worked out? What if she had stuck to you?"

Silva
"Hell if I know." He admitted. "I'm not likely to change. I still do things that could get me killed on a regular basis. And I'm over a year old now. If I don't get myself killed by pirates I'll probably wind up dying of old age soon enough." He fell back, lying on his back and staring at the ceiling, his head resting on his hands. "And to think, I used to be younger than she was."

Sunil
"I'm older than you," Sunil snorted. "You're not going to die of old age if I didn't."

She leaned over so she could look down at him, her face not far from his.

"Pirates?"

Silva
He smirked, his eyes closing slightly as she asked. The pirates were one of his more interesting memories. "Which ones?" He asked, much preferring the amazon pirates to the last ones. At least there he had wound up saving himself. "I've also got some serial killers in my past."

Sunil
"Which ones?" Sunil said incredulously. "Either ones. I've never met any pirates."

Silva
"When I was a kid..." He started out. Then he paused, frowning. "Hell, was I still a kid then? It's been a while. But I went through the closet door." He figured she would understand that, Ruya knew all about the door, after all... or she had.

"It was a pirate ship. But the pirates were all women. Vicious bitches that had men crawing on their knees to keep from getting killed. For some reason that scene didn't surprise me too much. But in the back they were having this auction." He paused, chewing on his toothpick slightly as he picked up on a different magical signature. "Hmm..."

Sunil
"I think," Sunil pronounced happily, "that I would like these women pirates. Do you suppose they would take me onto their crew?"

She was oblivious to any other feien who might be in the vicinity.

"Yeah... it's dead..."

"It was dead when she gave it to him."

"But now it's thawed and dead." Nick and Nack's commentary were constants in his life, Silva thought as he stepped back from the once frozen piece of meat he had been using as a punching bag. A chicken leg this time, one almost as big as him. Aleric let go from where he had been holding it still, letting it swing lightly from the thread Ice had hung it with.

"Well at least it's tenderized now!" Ice said happily, coming into the kitchen. "Aleric gets to do the second one."

"Do you sometimes get the feeling we're being used?" Aleric asked calmly as Ice replaced the chicken leg with another one. Silva snorted, wrapping a new set of cloth around his hands and grabbing the leg. The cloth kept his hands from freezing off and any blood from his knuckles from getting on the meat.

"Are you supposed to tenderize chicken?" Jade asked from the opposite counter. She and Kisa were peeling potatoes.

"I'm not sure, but it can't hurt!" Ice replied. "This is much better when grilling steaks, but they need the workout."

Aleric slammed his fist into the chicken, noting that it didn't make nearly the impact that Silva's did. And that Silva didn't have nearly as hard a time holding the meat as he did. He would have to get stronger next, he thought. He had been working on his speed lately, running with weights on his back to build up leg muscles. But he was still no match for his brother and sparring partner. Thankfully most of Silva's comments were aimed at motivating him rather than tearing down his ego.

It wasn't that Silva cared about his ego, though. It was that he wanted a decent spar. Or maybe what Aleric thought were motivational comments would tear apart a lesser feien. In fact, that was probably it.

"Do it faster." Silva muttered, scowling slightly. "I know you've been working on that."

"I don't have the same power level..." Aleric muttered, putting more weight into his punch.

"With speed you can make up for it." Silva told him.

"I'm not as fast as you are, either." Aleric said calmly, but he sped up his hits anyways. It actually made Silva brace himself slightly.

"With speed comes a heavier impact. And people don't see it coming. Hell a fast enough feien could probably beat me if they had the endurance. Even if they didn't have the strength." Silva told him casually. "Although even then there's the question of experience."

"You've put a lot of thought into this, haven't you?" Aleric asked, slamming his fists into the frozen meat. Left, right, jab jab, uppercut. Just the way Silva had taught him. His knuckles never got as bruised as Silva's did and he didn't need as much cloth to protect him. It was the one thing he was proud of.

"Why do you think I'm training you?" Silva asked.

"What does that mean?" Aleric asked back, his words punctuated by fist against meat.

"You're slow now, but I can get you faster. And your stamina's better than mine. Not by much, but it is."

"So you're trying to get me to where I can kick your a**?" Aleric asked, pausing mid-punch. "Why don't you just work on your own stamina?"

"I do." Silva grunted slightly as the hits started again. "Never said I'd make it easy. Now go faster, dammit. You're putting me to sleep."

Aleric nodded, picking up on something in the other feien's emotions that wasn't being explained. "Why else are you doing this?" He finally asked.

"Because if I go crazy..." Silva said, thinking of all the times he had been nearing the brink of not caring about anything. "I want someone that can stop me. So put your weight in it, old man. You've got a hell of a lot of work to do before you're at that point."

Aleric nodded, doing as he said. But the very idea of Silva going crazy worried him. Could anyone stop him in the feien world? Maybe one or two... but he didn't want to risk finding out.

Silva had been silent for too long. Aleric looked up from where he was attempting to paint. He would need to get real paints, he thought, glancing down at the black and white paint that he had borrowed from Silva.

Silva was looking at something, not porn for once. Aleric took to the air, wiping at his paint splattered hands before dropping down next to Silva's garden. "Can I ask what that is?"

"It's a copy of the spell list." Silva said, not looking up. "They've got the original at the shop. Or used to, at least." He pointed at one of the spells. "See this? Berserk. Hell of a spell, don't you think?"

"Yes... yes it is." Aleric said, reading the description. "It also sounds quite dangerous."

"That's the fun part." Silva replied. there was a strange look on his face, one that Aleric had never seen before. He was almost positive it was... lust. "I think I'm strong enough."

"Silva--"

"I've seen movies about berserkers, you know? They could take out entire armies by themselves. Damn that would be fun... I bet I could take on a human with that..."

"Silva."

"Did I ever tell you how I took out Snake once?" He finally glanced up, a little smirk on his face as he chewed on his toothpick. "I wrapped his sheets around his ankles--"

"Silva, there's something I've been meaning to tell you." Aleric said, sitting on the edge of the garden.

"What is it? And what does it have to do with me learning berserk?"

"You told me you were training me to keep you from doing something stupid."

"Oh... right." Silva turned the page of his list then tossed it to the sand. "Tell me."

"We had a talk a while ago, before the draft, remember? About how you wouldn't mind having a kid around." Aleric paused, noting the mixture of emotions that rushed through Silva. Anger, regret, a hint of irritation. But he kept going. "You said you didn't want to breed. But that Ice could get a kid some other way."

"What are you getting at?" Silva asked.

"Almost a week ago I delivered a white envelope to the shop for Ice. It was a bribe. One that will... encourage the Fleet to deliver a bloom to us."

"...And what does this have to do with Berserk?" Silva asked.

"If we have a juvenile in the household... And you were to lose your temper..." Aleric paused as a twinge of hurt came from the taller feien. Silva's face didn't show it, though. "Well, wouldn't that make it even more dangerous?"

"I'm not that out of control, Aleric." Silva said coldly. "If I had a kid I would protect it."

"I know that, Silva. But you tend to protect a little too well."

"What are you, my ******** mate? If we get a brat in here, I'm not going to kill it, okay? No matter how weak or annoying it might be." His eyes were flashing, but he made no move to attack.

"And what if some other feien decides to bully her?" Aleric asked. He knew Silva. He knew him well.

"Then I'll kill the son of a b***h."

"And now we get to the heart of the problem."

"...What?"

Aleric sighed. He had a long ways to go.

"Wait, do we know it's going to be a girl?" Silva asked, not even noticing Aleric's problem.

"Yes, actually. We do."

"Thank God." Silva muttered. Then he paused. "Well, s**t..."

"What's the problem?"

"Having a kid here... means that the kids that live in the house behind ours will want to come over and hang out, right?"

"...Oh."

Fathers be good to your daughters...
Daughters will live like you do...
Girls become lovers,
And turn into mothers...
So mothers be good to your daughters, too...

A little girl... What in the hell did one do with a little girl? Not what he used to do with little girls, that much was obvious... Silva stared at the hopechest, taking in the various workout tools with a new eye. He had a gym. With a single plush toy couch. Definitely the household of a bachelor.

And he somehow doubted a little girl would approve of his porn collection, if Ice was any indicator. Not that he was going to give it up, just that he might have to hide it better. He scowled, dropping down next to the weights section of the gym. Two sets, his and Alerics, dumbbells, barbells, bolts used as bracelets when jumproping... Would he train a little girl like this? Would a little girl want to be trained this hard?

He paused, thinking of Berra. Maybe, but even if she did, he doubted it would be on this scale. Maybe some self defense would be good. In fact he would insist on it. But he wouldn't make her into a monster, not like he was. Not like what he was turning Aleric into... He wouldn't have to. She would have him, after all.

His little girl... Sure he had had Jade and Kisa, he still did when it came to that, but this one... this one would be just like him. Only shorter. And female. He could make up for all his screw-ups if he raised her right. Maybe... This time he wouldn't run away.

Often.

And this time he wouldn't... He stopped, his eyes going dark for a moment. What was he thinking? Dammit, really... what in the hell was he thinking? Who in their right mind would want him as thier old man? He was rude and crass and did things that could easily get him killed. He was self-centered, too. He'd be the first to admit it. Hell, he had tried to kill Aleric when he had first shown up.

And it was a girl he would be raising, not a boy. With a boy he would have been fine. Sure, he was an a**, but boys are tough. Boys can learn to deal with that sort of toughness, even thrive with it. Just look at Nick and Nack. He stared down at the weights blindly. He was raising them all... HAD raised them all, even Aleric, on a different level than a female should ever even see. No female should be raised in a gym! Even he knew that!

Boys you can break...
Find out how much they can take...
Boys will be strong, boys soldier on...
But boys would be gone without mother's good... good heart...

He cursed, throwing his toothpick out the window and looking over at the strangely silent Aleric. "You raise her." He told him, taking to the air. "I don't want anything to do with it."

"Silva--" Aleric called, irritated with the other male. "You're chickening out."

"..." Silva didn't reply, but paused mid-air before flying out the window. He had made his decision. It was what was best for all of them.

"But if the boss doesn't want anything to do with her..." Nick asked, hauling yet another bag of dirt over his shoulder and heading for the glass fishbowl on the corner of the hopechest. "Then why are we doing it?" He asked, pouring the dirt into the bowl. The bloom was an earth element, Aleric said, so they were making her bedroom.

"Because this way he won't have a choice." Aleric said calmly, flying in another bag of dirt. "He's going to help with this child, whether he likes it or not."

"But... isn't that dangerous?" Nack asked, looking at the plans for the bed. They would need some material for a curtain, as well as a pillow or two. They could even put in a small tree... "Making the boss do anything he doesn't want to--"

"He wants to. He's just not good with commitment." Aleric replied. "How about a few shiny rocks showing through the glass, Nick? Think that would help?"

"I think we could manage that..." Nick said, heading for the pile of rocks they had stolen from Ice's collection.

"I'm going to ask Ice about getting a bonzai tree." Nack said thoughtfully. We could transplant it to the bowl."

"Good idea." Aleric said. "Would we still need the curtains then?"

"No, I don't think so." Nack said. "Unless she wants the privacy."

"Will the tree get enough air?" Nick asked, standing in the bowl and rearranging the rocks. It's kind of stuffy in here... least it would be with too much clutter."

"You realize Silva's going to be staring at this while he works out, don't you?" Nack asked, going back to the main conversation as he made notes on the tree. "We'll pick up one of those aquarium decorations instead, then. They've got some cool stuff like that."

"I know." Aleric said, looking satisfied with that thought. He headed out the window to grab another thing of dirt from Ice's bag. Earth was a hard thing to make look pretty, really, but he thought they were managing quite nicely. They could add something around the brim of the bowl, to make it prettier...

"What in the hell do you think you're doing?"

Aleric winced at the cold tone of voice and headed back into the room. Silva was glaring down at Nick and Nack, and there was a tick developing in his jaw.

Nick grinned. "We're getting ready for the bloom!" He said happily. He climbed up the rope and sat on the brim of the fishbowl, as if they were doing nothing wrong. "We've got something of Aleric's in here, and something of ours, now we need something of yours." Silva looked past him, raising an eyebrow at the sight of a letter from Aleric and two pieces of candy.

"I've already taken care of that." Nack called, lifting a strange little necklace. There was a dark red scale hanging from the middle, with small beads to either side. It was the perfect size for a feien child. The scale shone healthy and bright, still having a trace of his magic. Silva almost choked on his toothpick. "I'm not sure how many feien have scales, though... do you think people would recognize it?"

"He's the only one that I know of." Aleric said calmly. "Anyone that knows him will recognize it, most likely."

"She can't have it." Silva said coldly.

"Why not?" Aleric asked. "If she wears that... if she's willing to wear that, then everyone will know who she's protected by. Even if you aren't the one raising her." He looked at Silva for a second. "You don't have to be with her all the time. In fact, you don't have to go near her."

Silva ignored him, glaring at Nack. "How the hell did you get that? That's a healthy scale, and I know for a fact I don't shed."

"Tweezers." Nack said casually. "You sleep well when you're drunk." He was still holding the necklace, he noticed. Which meant that Silva wasn't as pissed as he was acting. "We used a needle to tie it to the string, then got some of Kisa's beads." He motioned to the black and white beads that were as small as the tip of his finger. "It's one of Ice's hairs. It's a good luck charm."

"If she wears that certain... people will think she can be used against me." Silva muttered, still not looking happy. "But hell, who would wear that, anyways?"

"I would." Nick said, shrugging. Nack nodded in agreement.

"It's a little bohemian looking, don't you think?" He asked, happily.

"It's a scale. Like a f*cking snake. And she's a female." Silva drawled. "Forget it, keep the damn scale. Just get that fishbowl out of my room."

"We can't do that." Aleric said. Silva glanced over, his narrowed eyes narrowing even more. "If I'm going to keep an eye on her bloom it should be in here. I spend most of the time here, you know."

Silva glared at him, knowing he was well and thoroughly screwed. "Then get it out when she turns into a brat. Hell, I'll move it myself." He said, turning and heading for his garden. He had a headache.

Silva was surfing. Aleric was sunbathing, Nick and Nack were building a sandcastle. And Ice was wracking her brain for the ending of her latest novel. She was sitting out on the backporch with them, working on her tan as she tried to come up with ideas.

"It's a kid's book, right? Do you think I could kill one of the good guys?" She asked Kisa and Jade. Both females shook their heads. "Well... there goes that idea..."

"So..." Aleric said, glancing over at Nick and Nack. "Think we should tell him the rest?"

"Nope."

"Not at all."

"Tell me the rest of what?" Silva asked, walking onto the beach.

"Nothing." Both boys said at the same time.

"If it's something to do with that brat you're getting, I don't want to know." He said as he laid down on the sand and closed his eyes.

"Then we won't tell." Aleric said calmly.

"What seems to be the problem, boys?" Ice asked, looking up from her notebook. She wasn't getting anywhere with her ideas, anyways.

"Silva doesn't want a kid." Nick said.

"No, he doesn't want to deal with the kid. He doesn't care if we have one or not." Nack said.

"I'd say both aren't quite accurate explanations." Aleric said, looking at Ice. "Silva believes he would make a... poor father figure. So he's decided to leave the raising of the child to us."

"But feien juveniles come out of the bloom practically grown." Ice said, looking confused. "At least, Silva did. And I'm surprised that Silva admitted to anything that he couldn't do..."

"I could do it. I just don't feel like it." Silva grumbled. He didn't bother opening his eyes. "Could we let this damn subject die already? We don't even have the bloom here yet."

"Good point." All three males said at once.

"You guys are really into this bloom thing, aren't you?" Ice asked, trying not to grin. "I saw the fishbowl you were setting up. It's really pretty."

"We figured it wouldn't hurt." Nack said, shrugging. "You know... to be prepared."

"Okay, dammit, tell me what it is you're not telling me." Silva burst out, making them all turn to look at him.

"Huh?"

"Is she retarded? Is she a crossdresser? What? If it's being interested in other girls, seriously, I wouldn't care. So what--"

"You wouldn't care if she was a lesbian?" Nick asked.

"Actually, tecnically we are neither male nor female, so--" Aleric started out.

"Could somebody just answer my f*cking question?" Silva demanded. "What's so special about this kid that you're keeping it from me?"

"Her coloring." Aleric said.

"...What?"

"I can answer that." Ice said. "Thanks to the fleet we get to choose what colors the feien we get are, even while they're in their bloom stage. So I picked one I thought everyone would be most comfortable with. Of course, she's going to have feathered wings... and a third eye, but--"

"..." Silva gritted his jaw. "Would you just tell me already?"

"Her coloring... it's..."

"Red and black with white hair." Aleric said calmly. "Sound familiar? And stripe markings."

"Well... s**t." Silva said, chewing on his toothpick for a second. Then he rolled over, presenting his back to them. "Doesn't ring a bell."

"Of course it doesn't." Ice said dryly.
