I've been playing the clarinet for four years. I play the B-flat clarinet in marching band, and the B-flat contrabass clarinet in Concert band. Clarinets are so fun to play!

@ arata-chou
I'm just asking, but does it squeak in every note, or just some? Sometimes my bass clarinet squeaks when something doesn't seal properly. Check your pads and springs. Makes sure the screws are all in and make sure that the mouthpiece isn't broken either.
Off course these are just suggestions, because this is just what usually happens to me.
@ ShikyoAmataka
You play contrabass? LUCKY! I so wish I was you!
-----
Anyways I've been in band for five years. I've play bass clarinet in concert band and Bb clarinet in cadet mil band.
I also play other instruments.. just not clarinet related.

Akane-senpai It seemed inapproiate to post without first introducing myself. My name is.... Akane-senpai! But actually, I'm probably Akane-senpuu to most of you guys. sweatdrop I've been playing for three years now... got a late start. And now for my question: Are there different grades of mouthpeices? And is there a reed higher than a 3 1/2? A fellow Clarinetist said she usually plays on a 4 1/2, but I have had trouble finding such a reed. I guess that was 2, but I have a nother one. I play on Rico Royal, is Vandoren really a better reed? IDK about diff. grades of mouthpeices but i have seen up to 5 reeds so there are some, just have to look in the right places to find them. Also, i've heard from fellow clarinets in my band that ricos are bad, and are made from leftover stuff that reeds are made out of, but i use rico royals, just vandoren reeds are thicker, and take a little time to get used to.

Landruce What do ya mean I'm crazy? I use at least a toothbrush to clean all my mouthpieces(all 5), it saves time, and puts use to old toothbrushes ^,^ the clarinet mouthpiece is extremely soft so it can get scratched by many things, the only thing softer than it is our finger nails D: thats why I say your crazy D: you'll scratch it ><; but don't kill me if I'm wrong...but randomly during marching band for the first time...ever...I got this deep scratch in the face of my mouthpiece...I'm still waiting to go back to rdg to get a new one...
but i'm just gonna wait until i get my r13 :3...which will be i dunno...a while. sweatdrop

Akane-senpai Hello! Well not different grades, but different types of mouth pieces, for example M13, M30, etc I can't exactly explain it, but I have that the mouth piece curves either more or less on each type, again its hard to explain.
As for reeds, yes, the sizes go up to atleast 5 1/2, don't kill yourself with a 4 1/2 [especially not a 4 1/2 rue lepic reed!! Those are harder than normal reeds], unless the reeds you use are too soft. You'll usually find them in the vandoren brand.
well there are disputes about the reeds, my teacher uses a mixture, he has all sorts of connections so he gets packs of vandorens AND ricos, we talked a little about reeds two weeks ago, he didn't say much about the normal vandoren reeds, but those are pretty consistant, if I remember I found a good amount of reeds in a box. As for my new reeds, the vandoren 56, they are inconsistant; every now and then they'll be horrible and just mortifying to play on, but then sooner or later they play great, then they go back to being cruddy -_-; I'm thinking of going back to the blue vandoren box again or maybe the V12s. But anyways, for ricos, my teacher uses the rico reserves, his friend sent him a huge box full of them, he told its hard to find a great reed in each box, but there will be 3 or 4 reeds that sound absolutely stunning, [and it does, I've gone to his concerts, he's played the rico reserves on pieces with orchs by frank ticheli with him there :O [blue shades, and shooting stars, the blue shades solo was crazy, everyone went crazy when he played it, and not to mention gershwin's rhapsody in blue smile ]
for him, rico reserves work, but really, it depends on your style of playing and just everything, in the world of music we all are different with the way we play, find a reed you like the best and that you sound great on, thats all that matters

Hallo! I should be practicing on my clarinet right now but instead I'm posting in the clary forum, oh well! I am a clarinet in the RHS concert band, and I feel a duty to my band to say this: OUR BAND WON STATE CONTEST FOR 3 CONSECUTIVE YEARS! WOOT! but that was years ago, after those three years we kinda sucked, but we are getting better. We won second the last two years, and by spreads of 5 and 1 points. Just goes to show that we totally raised the state bar! Kudos to senor Follose, our director. We don't have a marching band but we all march in the homecoming parade and play the school song. It's fun! Shout out to all yall in 2a bands! oh, what is the oppinion on cloth ligatures, I'm thinking of getting on(my brother's got one on his sax) do they help playing, are they more comfortable?
