What about the drops and units that appear right in front of you and are automatically in close combat?

Then a squad or two gets raped. Pull back, have the fast moving squads make a diversion or try to take them down and then reestablish another firing line.

That won't work too well if they continue to kill. They can drop several units, wrap them up, and stop your main firing line. When those units are tied up others will advance and cause even more damage. The main downfall of Tau; Close combat. My opinion would be to have one unit, such as Farsight and his guards, designated for close combat, so when a unit gets caught up in close combat, they will go in and save a unit or two or simply stop the enemies slaughter of firewarriors. That way, you can continue to fire at on-coming enemies. 3nodding I know it ties up one of the more powerful units of the army for a short time, but that is only a minor set back compared to how it would be if close combat units came in, slaughtering your mainr firing units. sweatdrop

Van Evok SM drop pod army is bane of Tau, especially Black Templars with their insane "pass Ld for shooting and fall forward" move... Drop Pod Armies aren't that good against Tau. Sure it's not good that they can get in that close, but at the same time, it forces them to break up thier force for it to come in in easy, bite-sized chunks. What's really the bane of Tau armies are Drop Pod or Biker Boo armies. Rolling morale checks at Ld 5 or 6 is terrible, especially when you're already pressed up against the back of the board.

-Mykal In general when your just talking about flat drop pod armies its not so bad because one units handleable. But when that one drop pod comes down with something that can send every unit within 12" (or worse with some special characters) fleeing off the board it becomes a problem. Its all a matter of how much damage a single drop pod can do, and with Fear the Darkness, its a whole lot.

-Mykal It would make more sense if you quoted the WHOLE post. A regular Drop Pod army isn't that bad. The units come in piecemeal, odds are half of his reserves come in on Turn 2, and then more start to show up. The fact that it generally doesn't all rush at once is what makes it manageable. A Boo army, uses a Drop Pod, Bike, Jump Pack, or Teleport Homer on a bike to get a Librarian or two with Fear the Darkness right into Tau lines by Turn 2. Every non-HQ Tau unit within 12" of the Librarian is making morale checks at Ld 5 or 6 and likely being destroyed given that they are generally pressed up close to the back of the board. No real counter is available to the Tau now that Ethereals only affect units in LOS. Even with the Ethereals working on all affected units, only around half will stick around. Boo armies are the absolute bane of gun-line Tau. It's not as effective against Mechanized Tau.

[Sanity_is_for_the_Weak] Babbalui Mechanized tau! That's what i'm getting! WOOT! But mechanized tau fall to many a heavy weapon. And non-mechanized won't? I don't quite follow. Truth be told each 40k army has an optimal niche that occassionally gets changed by metagame. Tau's optimal niche is full or partial mechanization, just like with Tyranids its Hybrid Swarm with Monstrous Creatures, or with guard and the static gunline. When you take armies out of their niche they tend to underperform. Looking for an army that is unstoppable by all means is rather silly. Sure a ton of heavy weapons could destroy mechanized tau should you fail to have terrain to hide behind and you get shot at alot. More than likely you can outflank their static defenses and take them apart. A tau gunline just isn't really that great of an idea, you need alot of mobile assets.
