Dari accepted and returned the hug with a warm smile. Toby was a bit too weighed-down to receive the same, but he shook his head at Maia's offer.
"No, no, I've got it. It's just dirty clothes anyway." God, what he wouldn't give for a shower...

Since hugs were not good when the other party was carrying several suitcases, Maia instead leaned up and placed a kiss on hos cheek. "Go rest," she suggested. They had to be exhausted. She looked to Dari too. "You rest too. Do you have a story for me?"

Toby leaned into the cheek kiss and smiled, then headed for the basement to throw in a load of laundry. Maybe he could fit it all in one. Toiletries had been provided at camp, whatever little there had been. He probably smelled like jungle and sweaty man himself. Dari was the same as ever, not even due for a purge.
"Unfortunately we can't tell you much due to policy," Dari said. "I can tell you that we were in the jungle, and that it was beautiful, and that we were successful." He'd leave out the part where Toby was slashed across the arm. There was no evidence of it by now anyway.

So whatever they'd been after, was top secret. Maia gave Dari another hug and led him into the kitchen. "What do you guys want to eat?" She asked. She didn't think they would have had the ability to cook in the jungle. "What do you think Toby would like?"

Dari returned this hug as well and followed Maia into the kitchen. "I would prefer to not eat, thank you. As for Toby...?" He looked of toward the basement door. "I'm not certain. His diet was limited in the field. He'd probably like anything."

For once, Maia did not insist Dari join them in eating. Instead she followed his gaze towards the basement. "I hope he gets some rest. After, I'll make something for him." She paused and studied him. He was the same as ever; definitely not any worse for wear, despite being in the jungle.
"I really missed you."

Well, they had slept last night, but Dari wasn't entirely sure how that sort of thing worked after hours of travel in a semi-unfamiliar bed.
"I missed you as well," he said, "So did he." He nodded off toward the basement. "He got up early to call you."

"I figured, since you had to go once everyone had woken up." She'd really appreciated the call. It'd meant a lot, even if the conversation had been cut short. "What special place should we go to?" She asked. Not today, the boys needed rest. But tomorrow?

"That was your job," Dari teased. "We could go to a special restaurant, or make a day trip somewhere? You didn't look?"
Toby emerged then, having set the washer running. He dropped a bag beside the couch for Dari and took his upstairs, then came back down again.
"Okay, what did I miss?" he asked, joining the others in the kitchen.

"I looked," Maia protested. But she hadn't been able to pick just one, one that all three of them would enjoy. "Maybe a day trip." She looked to Toby when he appeared a second time and smiled. "We were planning where to go for our special place thing. Got any ideas?"

"That was your job!" My word, they were like twins! "We can do anything you want. I'm sure it'll be fun." He didn't really mind. He made his fun where ever he went. After so many years, you just sort of had to.
"That's what I said," Dari replied with a nod.

What was something they hadn't done, that was better than the lake? Maia considered it for a moment, and suggested, "We could go to the carnival in town." It was a small one, apparently connected to a company that ran a traveling circus.
The selkie wasn't interested in seeing that, but a day out with the two boys, that'd be fun.

Toby considered this for a moment. The animals in the circus were captive and often abused... but what if he didn't tell Maia that? Would she enjoy it anyway? Or maybe they'd just see a sword-swallower or something and call it a day. Carnivals were better. They'd long since nixed the dancing bears on chains.
"Sure, if that's what you want to do. I'm up for anything."

"Okay, let's do that. I want to play the games there." And maybe go on some of the rides. She'd seen them being put up yesterday, on her trip to the mall. Some of them looked particularly dangerous and high up--she wasn't sure she wanted to risk going on those rides.
"Tomorrow? You should rest today. Get a shower, nap. I'll cook," she smiled at him. "I made cookies while you were gone. Lori's dog seemed to like them."

"Sure," Toby agreed with a nod. It'd be fun. Unfortunately Dari would probably have to be made-up to go as well. "Tomorrow it is. I desperately need a shower, so I'm going to go do that, but you don't have to cook for us. Rosie's sweet, isn't she?" He was already walking away while he spoke.
