It depends on what you're trying to draw.
The dark color attracts the eye. On the first one you think "it's a creature with a shell on its back" because you see the shell with a creature under it. On the second one you think "it's a creature" because you see it, and notice that it has a funny back.
Top one looks better for no reason other than that white eyes look wrong.

The first of the two. The contrast works better with the shell instead of the body.
