Luca was fairly impressed with Lori's range of languages. "Old fae?" He echoed, smiling at the other elf. "Like old English? I'd like to see that."
"That's a handy talent. I wish it were that easy for me."

"Yeah, basically," Lori agreed with a nod. "Yeah, he's... not. I mean. I think he's technically a fluid? Semifluid? Something otherworldly. He's one-of-a-kind. Apparently his people have eidetic memories. Plus he can shape his palate... it's really cool." There he went, rambling about nerdy things other races could do.
"Do you know a lot of others? People-wise, I mean." Other entities, of course.

Luca stared at Lori for a long moment. "A talking fluid?" he asked in disbelief. "Huh." He shook his head when asked if he knew others. No, not really. Well he knew that dryad that lived in the willow in his backyard, what was her name? He'd planted the tree and she'd appeared a while later.
"You know talking fluids, I know a talking tree. Fiesty thing. I planted this little willow in my backyard and she popped out demanding why I'd moved her."

"Mm-hm. We have her on file. Dryad, right?" Lori asked, taking another sip of coffee. "You two still getting along okay?" Most rooted nature spirits just sort of sat around and did their own thing. With the way Luca was talking, he didn't imagine they were having any problems.
"I also know a cat that can spell. ... well he tries his hardest, if you have enough ham."

"Dryad," Luca agreed with a smile. "Yeah. She's good. Stays out of her tree until winter. She seems to hibernate around then... I don't know, do dryads hibernate?" He hadn't made an effort to do extensive research on the species. He figured Lily would be offended if he didn't ask her personally.
"Sidhe?" he guessed.

"Uh, they do in some cases," Lori nodded, and then shook his head. "No, 'he.'" It took a moment and he laughed. "OH. 'She' like... sidhe... yes. Yes. He is a cat sidhe. He's the office cat. Seamus."

Luca nodded. Huh. Dryads were certainly different. "Nice name," he commented. "Haven't met one myself. They curse people, don't they? And take souls?" why would someone keep one in an office? He sipped at his drink.

"Well, we don't have any bodies buried nearby and the one dead guy on staff is still on staff, so we're still up in the air about the 'souls' thing. Funny thing, though. Cat sidhe can only curse you to think you've been cursed by them. They can't do any real damage, not directly anyway. Hey, look."
Lori pointed to another word in the volume (if it was a word) that hadn't been translated.

Luca studied the word indicated, still grinning about the revelation concerning cat sidhes. So they pranked people into thinking they'd been cursed when they hadn't really. Funny! "I could introduce you to Lily sometime," he offered.

There was always a little hint of inner awkwardness when it came to meeting registered entities. Their files were at HQ. Most passed through Lori's hands at some point. He thus knew who Lily was but felt obligated to pretend that he didn't.
"Who? The dryad?"

"Yeah," Luca smiled. "She says her name is impossible for me to pronounce and told me to call her Lily. She might be lying though." he shrugged. He'd always had a feeling the dryad was teasing him. He took another swallow of his drink. "What can you make out?" he asked.

Well, it all depended on if she had a family or a community, right? She might not have a name at all! That didn't deny her the right to make one up, of course.
"Make out?" Lori turned to Luca with a raised brow. "These read like log books from some fae court. Elves, maybe. My sort." He refused to refer to himself as a 'fairy' in any language. "Unless those mystery words aren't words, though, it's not Irish. Or Scottish. Of course fae courts can appear anywhere there are fae, so..." Hm. Maybe given time they could use context clues to decide what court this was and where.

"I didn't recognize it, either. Or the magic used to translate it," Luca admitted, scooting closer to Lori to look. "Important logs, if they took care to ensure everyone could read it." He rubbed at his chin in thought, curious. "Do you think elves could've done this?" he asked.

Lori nodded. He too could generally recognize spells and enchantments and curses and the like. It was a part of his job. Something like this? This wasn't a spell to make the words secret, it was a translation.
"It's completely possible. We'll have to look a little closer."
It was another three days later when the lock on the front door began to click, as if someone were coming inside. Toby was carrying all of their luggage, standing behind Dari as he turned the lock. When the door pushed open, Toby gave a call: "Hello?!"
Maybe they had missed her?

Maia sat up when she heard Toby's voice, she'd been reading on the couch. She ran to the door to greet them. "You're back!" She beamed, quickly wrapping Dari in a hug. Toby was holding all The luggage, so she reached to take some of it. "Set It down, I'll put everything away."
