The only reason the video game industry is getting away with the 120 thing is because they can. I'm waiting for the government to become informed and throw regulations at it to stop the money abuse.

LoL, for instance, make people pay up to $300 just to remain competitive. To buy everything without having to spend time grinding so you can have all the game content (minus skins), that costs about at least $1K. I added it before, and it was very very expensive. And WoW makes people rent the game for $15 a month, in addition to paying money for the expansions. That's $180 a year, plus expansions.

Then you have mmos over in Korea and China that do microtransactions that grant them more money. And the same for mobile games, especially Farmville. It's such an evil, but effective marketing ploy. And it makes me sad seeing them get away with it mainly because it's a short term goal that eventually eats away the legitimacy of the video game industry. Soon, most consumers are going to be afraid of touching another game due to these kinds of procedures. It's sickening.

Micro-transactions isn't a bad thing like I said before.
LoL is a prime example of that because they it right.

They aren't forcing you to buy anything from them. Everything needed to play the game can be earned through time and effort. Most people don't have that kind of time or/nor do they wish to put in that kind of effort so there is also the option to buy.

Other MMO are adapting because:

It allows people to leave and comeback without any regret. After you've grind umpteen hours into game, it starts to lose it flavor. This in turns usually leads to a "rest" period. You go off and do other things and then one day remember "oh I got this to play". The less red tape (subscription fees for example) you have before playing that game the more inclined you will be to try it out again and proportionally the more inclined you will be to spend money on them.

This leads to less "buyer's remorse" and less bad publicity.

DLC for most games isn't functioning like that. Making you pay additional cost for a fundamental aspect of the game is not the same.

If DLC was simply additional "fluff" people wouldn't mind so much. There would still be complaints because at the end of the day, you still had to shell out $60 bucks initially but that would be a moot point.

On a side note, although this theory has not be proven ... I think it has to do with replay value. Console games have a fixed variable system because of the limitations of consoles themselves. They can only process but so many outcomes for a given event. Computers don't have that problem soooooooooo
in essence you will always get wider range of variables with a Computer game then you with a console.

As for mobile games... they are simply replacing handhelds which has always been and will always be a lucrative market. That's how Nintendo made the bulk of their money until PlayStation horned in on it and now you can get the same quality (plus or minus) of game on your phone.

I buy all my OTC s**t at Wal-Greens.

Wal-Greens is awesome only for that reason, the rest of the store is complete s**t.

I used to buy Gundam action figures at Wal-Greens when I was 13...

That's about it.

Even here on the coast of BC, we had some Amazing winter weather til suddenly snow hit yesterday and today!!! Stop it snow! your delaying my house reno! Thank goodness the new furnace is in this week, then i can finally finish the plumbing and electrical work.

I'm going to school in B.C. right now. Canada's weather is so nice despite the fact it's damn cold...

Yeah, it can get mighty cold here, At least around the Rupert/Smithers/Terrace area its been rather good this year. Haven't had a lot of snow or crazy colds. This may be a record year for the lacking of that deadly due.

You going to school at like UNBC in Prince George? or you in Van?
I'm in Van right now, and surprisingly it hasn't rained hard for awhile. MIRACLE OF GOD MAN....

@ Vintrict, that's why I prefer online games like League or DOTA due to the fact that money only get you aesthetics and extras, not much else. When money can actually get you a leg up on people is when s**t get's sloppy. And it's 10x worse when it's for a DLC that's required to understand a game's story or truly enjoy an experience.

Battlefield 3 had a sort of pay-to-win system going with their DLC.

Because a big chunk of the DLC guns were a lot stronger than the vanilla ones.

Colonel Iyam A Heita

You read Kotaku, Gameinformer, and Gamespot do you? All those points you made are false. I would spend a moment and refute them all, but I'm currently at work, so I can only think passively and roleplay for now.

But the gist of it is that I disagree with all you said.

LoL is a cash bank that borrows from Chinese/Korea mmos.

The F2P system for MMOs is just another marketing gimmick.

DLC has turned into "split content."

The console replay problem doesn't exist.

Mobile games are not the same as handheld games. Mobile phones aren't dedicate game devices. They aren't optimized like the 3ds or Vita are.

I have played a good amount of BF3 mutliplayer on the ps3, and i haven't notice any issues in terms of DLC guns appearing superior. But that being said, i haven't used them so i can;t make a true self comparison.
