"Just had a bad dream is all..." Van said closing his eyes as the images continued to play against the back of his eyelids. "I think...it was my past coming back to me..."

"The dream? I was a kid again...." Van began as he looked solemnly at the ground. "I was playing with my friends in front of a burning house while a girl was calling me to help her from inside....Me, nor anyone else paid any attention though....But...I remember now..." he said as he put a hand to his face as if he didn't like what had come back to him.

Mala averted her eyes and snuggled herself closer, her grip on Van tightening a little. "I'm sorry." she murmured, as if an apology would help make it better.

"It's fine....It's not your fault..." Van said automatically before continuing, thinking it would make him feel better if he told all. "I had a younger sister....Mom died giving birth to her, and that song, that lullaby...That was what she did with her dying breath....My sister, Vivi, was always getting sick, so I had to watch her while dad worked....It was snowing one day and I wanted to go hang out with my friends instead of watching her. She said I could go and I left without thinking about her at all...." tears streaked his cheeks as it all came back to him as clearly as if it had just happened. "I don't know what happened, but later the next thing I know the house is on fire...The snow and cold temperatures made it hard to get enough water to put it out....I knew she was going to die and all I could think about was how much trouble I was going to be in with dad....I just turned tail and ran way....Dammit, I can't believe I was so selfish!!" he said burying his face in his hands, guilty and ashamed of what he'd done back then.

Mala listened silently, unable to think of how to properly respond for what felt to her like an eternity. Mala bit her lip after she said, "You've matured much since then. You've long since grown past that selfish cowardice and you've become a good person. You wouldn't be crying about that memory if you hadn't changed as you have, now would you?" When Mala spoke, her tone was soft - comforting. She dearly hoped that she was saying the right thing, that she wouldn't upset Van further.

"I know, I know....I just feel horrible that I was such an a*****e back then...She was my sister, how could I have done something like that? It's like if I tried to kill her myself!" Van said holding Mala tightly.

"I still feel terrible...." Van said putting a hand to his head. "I'm getting worried, Mala....My power's getting weaker, I can feel it. If we can't find that power source and fix it soon...." he trailed off and swallowed. It was the unknown consequences that scared him, possibly more than if he knew he'd kick the bucket.

"Don't worry, we'll fix it soon or I'll be damned!" Mala promised, positive that she'd be able to. After a moment she then said, "It won't do us any good worrying about the negatives constantly, either. It'd probably be a good idea to find some way to get our minds off of this."

"We'll find a way, just trust me. I'm still young, so I've nothing to worry about at the moment as far as that goes." Mala said rather easilly, sounding quite confident.

"Yes, but you were the one talking about all the risks that came with breaking me out of there." Van said looking at Mala's hand to see if she was still wearing the ring. "Wasn't one of them a shortened life span?"
