Do you guys know of existentialism? i've tried to read up on it , but it's goddam boring . But most of all the concept (at least what i believe is the concept ) just seems like a waste of time.

I studied it as part of philosophy in college and psychology in high school.

Did you get it? What was the point? (both as subject and the reason you were made to study it ) Also how did it relate to psychology?

The underlying point as I understood it was that the individual is not only responsible for their own development, but that every person's perception is so unique that the world itself as we know it is unique to us. It is the ultimate distillation of the individual. Only one can truly define themselves correctly because only one's own perception can define their own existence.

As part of psychology, it was portrayed in a very negative, almost evil way. As if individuality was a criminal level of psychological disorder. I dismissed post of it as socialist grandstanding though, but it says something for the mindset.

Sounds rather similar to Solipsism, a concept where the only things that exist are those that interact with you or have an effect upon your life. It's a very self-centered concept as it literally is, you are the center of your universe (but each person is the center of their universe and what does not affect them does not exist to them or in their universe)

Existentialism does mirror that in a way. Though it does acknowledge everyone and that the universe exists outside of sapient perception. So while solipsism holds that only what you perceive is your universe and otherwise nothing exists, existentialism holds that everything exists, but only an individual can classify it for themselves.

In solipsism, your perception is the definition of the universe. You label everything for all. The perceiver labels others.
In existentialism, your perceptions are the definitions of the universe's substance unique to yourself. You label everything for yourself. Nobody can label you but yourself.

Thank you for the explanation my psych book only glossed over existentialism , didn't even mention Solipsism (learned about that from someone who was a Solipsist).

@ Exxos: The way you explain it . Makes it sound like "common sense ". Yet i read someone else describe it and it sounds depressing ,maybe even antagonistic.
@Kiev - had not heard of tha -ism before.

I pass, like night, from land to land;
I have strange power of speech;

I took 2 psychology courses at university and although I aced the classes, I could not see me working in that capacity and didn't pursue it further. I am, however, a professional psychiatric patient. xd My mother *finally* brought me to a shrink when I was in 8th or 9th grade. A bit late considering I'd been living a disturbed life since I was three. Seeing a shrink just wasn't acceptable at the time. *shrugs* I learned much more from my doctors and nurses than I ever did in uni. I've been under care for over 30 years, and have done a lot of my own research. I definitely made the right choice not to go into psychology...I don't know how psych workers can stand it. I've been hospitalised 4 times and there are some craaaaaazy mofo's behind those locked doors. *nudges self*

Hi!
How many active member is in this guild? As i see, near 10? smile
I'm noob in gaia, and lazy for reading all the guild forum topics, but as i think, the writing that total members is 168 only an indicative thing.
Is that a reason that some ppl are in more guilds or i wrong?

Yeah in most guilds you'll find that the total number is much higher than the number of people you'll see posting frequently. I do remove people from time to time who have gone several months without posting. Many of our number are still active but just not frequent posters. Hope that helps explain a little smile

Sadly, the few Psychs I've talked to, they end up having stress disorders from being the dumping grounds for humanities' darkness and then not being able to talk about it due to confidentiality. Both of them knew several in their profession that had fallen to hard drug abuse, they both were alcoholics and knew it.
