I disagree to a degree, but I don't feel like debating lol
DEBATE D:<
lol fine
While I agree a competition on vocals alone would only insult music as an art, American Idol isn't just a vocals competition. They judge on emotional connection and creativity with songs as well as the actual vocal pitch, tone, etc. Just because you don't write you own music doesn't mean your not an artist or a musician. Many great bands/singers don't have the ability to write the music/lyrics, so others write it for them. For instance, one of Whitney Huston's biggest hits of all time was written by Dolly Parton. Does that take away from Whitney? Not at all.
In fact, the show is all about giving an opportunity to all people around the US who may not have an opportunity otherwise. The show is about growing people and preparing them for a career and furthering them in their art. Just because it happens to be a vocal competition doesn't mean that's the only point of the show.
Some of the finalists from several seasons wrote their own music, played them on the show, and have gone on to do great things. I believe a generic statement like your making derives from not having watched enough of the show itself, or maybe you had outside or pre-decided biases on the show. Either way, I think the show is worth a second look.
