What did he mean though, in the first episode, where he said that he and his brother were punished for dealing with a certain kind of alchemy? Was he referring to their metal parts?

reviving people is illiagl cant spell today and they tryied to the magic it self tore there bodies apart leaving ed with no arm or leg and his brother no body so ed sealed his brother into a metal suit.
ed got metal replacement parts.
