Sammirah I've used Avast for a couple years now and it's always served me well. Recently, however, I'd been getting a LOT of those red pop-up warnings, like several in a day. So I installed Mal-Aware Bytes as a second line of defense. Didn't help, except now I mostly get those "we found a threat" alerts from Mal-Aware instead of Avast. The computer's running slower, but the most alarming thing is the ads that run in the background where I can't find them to close. I also have Ad-Aware. They all keep telling me that there's stuff in quarantine, but it just doesn't end. gonk gaia_nitemareleft Sorry for the long post but I know thing or two about these stuff due to my work so here's some suggestions. If the malware is just "add pop-up's" then ad-aware or your virus scanner should be able to remove them. Make sure you have updated them all before running the scans. If I suspect having malware I usually update the software's and then take my computer off from internet while I scan it. I do this because I want to make sure that if there are some active programs on my computer, they'll be handicapped while I scan the computer. Also I suggest you run a full scan on ad-aware. The quick scans are pretty light and might not find all of the stuff in your computer. I'm not big fan of Avast and my experience is that it's not good with removing threats so if it's not finding the bugs even if you have updated it, then I would recommend to try something else. For example you could check your computer with F-secure's online scanner. I've used it my self and with customers and it's working well. Here's the link for it: http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_us/free-tools F-secure is a Finnish company but they are well known for really crunching the bugs out of your computer (though their products are bit heavy to use for the computers) and they provide really good free online scanner. Having different programs is good idea because one might not spot a program another one notices. I use Anti-Vir, Ad-aware and Spybot. I recommend spybot but keep in mind that it might not be as user friendly as some more simpler programs. If the virus and malware scanners can't find the bugs (oh and you should delete the bugs not just quarantine them) then there are few options left. Firstly you should check your browsers add-ons for toolbars and other "odd programs". Uninstall all search toolbars and other "helper toolbars" you might have eg. google, yahoo and so on. Toolbars have tendency to operate as malware as well so I recommend not to use them. If that doesn't help then there's always the option of completely erasing your computer and re-installing it again. But I'd say to keep it as the last resort. One of those programs mentioned should be able to find the bug if it's "the basic stuff" if it's not, then you might want to consider taking the computer to a repair shop to be looked at. gaia_angelright

I pass, like night, from land to land; I have strange power of speech; I've finally done it. My laptop has literally been coming apart at the seams and the screen flaps around when I move it. I decided rather than buying a new computer I would buy peripherals and use it like a desktop/tower, yet keep the portability of a laptop for when I travel. I got great deals on the monitor and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo. It's weird sitting at a desk to surf the web...I'm so used to doing it from my recliner. I hope this arrangements means I'll tire of computer play faster and get some housework done. I can always fall back on my tablet if I'm in too much pain to sit at the desk.

It's wonderful to have you with us Misty smile @Lycanthropos - regarding your new computer set up. I find it really cool/interesting how we find unique ways to work around things to get the most use out of them.

Web security and ease of access don't usually coincide without a price, although, fortunately, there are exceptions. And hey, Misty! Welcome to our beloved home away from home. Be sure to check out each of the threads, including the sub- forums, to discover where your li'l niche may lie. And Renaissance- y attire truly rocks. ^^

Camwen @Lycanthropos - regarding your new computer set up. I find it really cool/interesting how we find unique ways to work around things to get the most use out of them. I pass, like night, from land to land; I have strange power of speech; Yeah, I have to be frugal. Summer is almost here which means my wife won't have any teaching jobs (she's a sub), or any income. I got the idea to keep the laptop and add peripherals from my former job. I was a traveller, and all the travellers had company laptops that we could plug into peripherals when we were working in the office. I miss that job...it was such a sweet setup. I got paid good money to travel from coast to coast and see the country.

I woke up sick yesterday, next to no sleep, the cats managed to break a bunch of measuring cups and a lamp - glass everywhere and huge clean-up, the shopvac burninated in the process of cleaning up so running outside with vacuum on fire and hosing it down, then my father came home, then we thought we lost zander for almost an hour but the little goit was just hiding in a place we never thought to look (under a sheet on top of a bookcase that he can't reach the top of for all we knew).
Then last night, fighting and abuse, and between my father's snoring and the wind, no sleep. By the time I started falling asleep, he got up to start his day screaming into the phone. Then the smoke alarm ran out of battery, so it is beeping every 30 seconds, but we don't have a ladder tall enough to reach it, then the gardener was here and because he does our 3 neighbors' houses too he was here for awhile, bloody leafblowers and lawnmowers.
So I lost my cool and got slammed across the face into a wall.
And then more fighting and harassment.
I need a small coma. I am not even kidding this time. Just hook me up to some tubes, sedate me out of my noggin, and let my body recover for 5 to 7 days.

Today has been really loud. My mother is also on one of her hyper-reactive benders. So she is so pissed off and scatterbrained that her entire day slows down and s**t is falling apart. Her patience is completely gone. And that pisses her off even more, so it gets worse and worse.
