You actually would just want version 3.5, and version 4.0. 3.5 is a good old fasioned version, and is fairly simple to get, plus most of the stuff from the versions before just rolled over, and 3.5 is the best one so far. I've only used 4.0 once or twice, but it is pretty beast. I only like 3.5 more because it has that classic feel to it. but for a starter, go with 4.0 and then if you want a classic feel, go to 3.5 for funzies. 4.0 was actually based off of a rejected format for an online set up. so if you play online games you'll get the hang of 4.0 faster. and no, not really. only about 200 - 300 pages, and quite a few are tables. ( Charts of feats, and pictures. not walls of text. ) you don't have to, a lot of people make their own monsters. it is just easier to use the monster manual. I made a grey slime once. level 5. level 1 barb in my campaign killed it in one shot... poor thing was actually just a cursed human... Also, Npcs are an intigral part of any D&D experience. you can get exp just by negotiating instead of actually fighting. if your DM is boss, he'll even let you forgo the actual roll, and if you can convince the enemy of something just by your verbal skills alone, he'll let you get away with it. ( House rules always make the game more enjoyable, because if something is broken, house rules can fix it. ) Ok, I'll have to find my players handbook, I haven't played in 2+ years, so Im a bit rusty. I'll look for it tommorrow and start a thread in the OOC area. And yeah, the feat system can stack with anything. It is basically like perks in Skyrim. Except you get a couple at base creation, and at every level you get another. ( In D&D every 3 levels you get a bonus feat. and Humans get a bonus feat at creation, otherwise you only get a couple. I think the character creation feats are about 6 at creation. But these feats are amazing, Combat finess allows you to forgo using your str modifier for to hit, and use your dex mod. great or rogues who have no str mod, or a negative one. ) I'll try and find it tonight... Wait, I can just use my guild for this. I'll pm you the link, and disreguard my guild's theme, I've decidied to give up on the whole final fantasy tactics idea. I'll send you the link to my guild, and I'll have the crash course set up in the free area. ( Everything else is locked down. )

So really, perks are just like the types and profession bonuses, just, more of them?
House rules are awesome no matter what game you're playing. They just add more flavor. But really, I can't imagine making a convincing argument on whatever topic is being discussed and then having it fall flat due to a failed dice roll, so I can understand why they would drop it on that.
I made a slime NPC once too... I dunno what level it would be considered in D&D, but it would definitely be a boss monster. Had some pretty extreme skills and such.
Anyways, I doubt the classic feel would do much for me, considering I've never played the game before. I suppose it'd be more of a choice of which I liked better for me. If I was to try DMing, I'd probably only use the character creation and dice rolling system rules from the game, and run everything else my own way. Even combining two different versions of the game wouldn't be above me if I thought it'd come out well.

No, Feats are much more, they are capable of even giving abilities. Like I created one that made your character's swings ( With a weapon ) so powerful seeming, that the weapon seemed to bend. ( Like how you see it in anime. ) and it caused your opponent to because shaken, which effectivly halves their abilities. Granted you had to have a +3 base attack bonus, but that is nothing for a Krell Barbarian. See, the reason you'd have the dice roll is because for the players that aren't good at talking. and normally you have to crit fail, I.e. get a 1 on a 20 sided die, to fail a dip check. See, mine had a fairly nice skill, it could spend one of it's turns and absorb an opponent and use them as a sheild. But it never got the chance. xD Combining versions is normally a bad idea. it was possible before 4.0, but not practical. 4.0 and 3.5 are VERY different. I tried to convert Krell over to 4.0,but even their creator said he didn't want them there. ( Krell were a race of bird people that my old DM created. I've told oyu guys about my evil Krell Barbarian. I think I have anyways... )

My slime absorbed people too! Except, it absorbed corpses and stole their abilities. If they didn't have an ability it wanted it'd absorb their stats instead.
(On iPod in Sam's Club, so no long rants for now.)

(On iPod in Sam's Club, so no long rants for now.) Lolz, but mine absorbed living humans. xD It would absorb them, and grow momentarily larger. It went from being a humanoid when in it's true form, to being a giant. xD It's stats basically quadrupled if it killed someone by burning them away with acid. xD But freaking barbarian picks up a freaking flat object and decides to hit it... It could have split into two different ones, but he just had to use blunt. TT^TT

You could Rp in Suna with me, he will be lazy and absent minded so walking off mid conversation wont be a problem, so if you do not have time to post I will walk off and you can find him when you get back and beat him to death. heart
