Hmm, they can pose a bit a threat I guess.
Although it wouldn't take much to swat them out of the air.
Take all of one turn.

the thing I going on about are piranha launched drones.. they don't form a group of 10 drones.. they form 5 groups of 2 drones...

and yes... never dis the 5+ sure.... it doesn't give much chance but with twin link you get all the more chances

thats why I tend to use battlesuits with twinlinked weapons, gives better chance of hitting where it's needed... but in the higher up points games I forego the twinlink because I have a skyrail and pathfinder plus several marker drones and tones of seeker missiles... i have enough marker lights to aid my fighting

thats what make gundrones deadly.. a since or double marker light use... BS3, then 4

or reduce leadership to easy pin 3nodding squad of 8 pathfinders gets say.. 3-4 marker hits

1-2 to BS and the rest to reduce leadership which can cause even necrons to fail easily 3nodding ...from what I have heard best to reduce to leadership 5-6 for best results as 7 tends to come up the most when it comes to 2D6 results 3nodding

.... and sanity.. you underestimate the drones... they are fast and quite difficult to handle.. specially depending on the race.. with I4 they could easily assault say a group of heavyweapons and keep themself alive..... hit and run into cover like most battlesuits, or pin a squad nearest them preventing the deadly rapidfire

they have a 4+ save so they have about as much chance as living as all tau units do.... only thing that gets them is heavybolter fire.... but then thats a wasted heavybolter/s allowing a squad of firewarriors to remain still and open up with a 30" ranged volly. Gundrones are better as shields and destraction units 3nodding

worst thing about a piranha squadron launched drones is even heaviest devastator squad can only kill 2 of them per turn as each pair is separate unit then...

That is not my understanding of the Piranha squadron rules. I'd quote you a page number and passage, but I'm away from my codex til Thursday night. As has been pointed out, having 5 squads of two is better, but I don't beleive that is how they work.

I don't go for Markerlights in my army. If I have any, they're in Fire Warrior Squads or in Sniper Drone Teams. Mostly, I see Pathfinders and Skyrays as point sinks. They're very points heavy for little effect. If you put Pathfinders somewhere where they can hit most of the board with thier Markerlights, any wise opponent is going to turn them into dogmeat with every weapon they can. If they're somewhere where they limit the enemy that can engage them, then they limit thier own field of fire, and force themselves to waste at least two turns repositioning. I'd like the Skyray...if it wasn't a Heavy choice. Tau are overburdened with Heavy choices right now. If Sniper Drones or the Sky Ray was in Fast Attack, I'd love to take them. But they're heavies, and Broadsides and Hammerheads are just way, way better than the newcomers to the codex.

Yeah, heavy weapons like make the drop like flies, but it will take multiple squads to take them all down.
Angel Goddess, stacking up the markerlights just for some gun drone squadrons would make the pathfinders or whatever useless for that turn, plus the benefits can only be stacked up to a ballistic skill of 5.
I plan on Implementing two teams of probably eight drones each, anyone know if I can buy them separately?
Sniper Drones I consider Ideal for marking targets because they can shoot at other squads while lighting up another one for others to handle.
What, in your opinion, is the best Markerlight benefit?

Yeah, I think Ill be making two squads or perhaps 8 drones.
That will work nicely, too bad they each take a fast attack, I wish it were more like the sniper drones when they take up a third of a position.

Babbalui
What?

Sniper Drones.
3 to a heavy choice.
Wish Gun Drones were the same way.
But they aren't.
Which sucks.
Because I like them.

He's referring to the Sniper Drones, and how you can take three squads of them in one FOC slot. That would probably make Gun Drone Squadrons far too good, and would probably cause them to cease scoring as well.

agreed.... ahh drones.. so wonderful, so useful..... they help anoy, they help pin, they offer support fire.... they act as meat shields when a squad loses some saves... but they cost a fast attack choice when taken as a squad.. and can often prevent firewarriors from taking a transport without having to remove 2 models.. ((sqaud of 12 warriors+2 drones = 14.. transports only carry 12 3nodding ))

so many uses.. so many faults... gonk

Putting this to rest since I now have access to my codex. Page 31 of the Tau Empire Codex, in the subsection on Drones, under Gun Drone:

"All Gun Drones on a vehicle or in a Piranha squadron must disembark at the same time, counting as a single unit."

well, so by buying full strength piranha squadron you get overstrenth drone squadron ! two in one!
PostPosted: Sat Mar 31, 2007 4:12 pm

.... rules can be interpreted differently 3nodding ... either way they each form some squads. Anyway on a good note I have gotten lucky.. should things go well my tau army will have about 1000pts heart ... with no job I must admit I am lucky 3nodding .. soo i shall be playing with full armies ninja

.... what are some peoples thoughts on the changes from old codex to new codex.. personally I glad hounds and krootox don't count as a fastattack and a heavy support stare ... that made them almost useless because they took up valuable space..... 3nodding with the new codex I use them more frequently now for my planning and such... kroot would do good in a city fight as well as vespid.... god those vespids are cool mrgreen

I bought all of my units without a job and my parents are broke. I have about 2000+ points worth of units. When they are all upgraded they equal nearly 2500+ points. I guess i'm just amazing when I can buy a full army for nearly nothing! xd I think I spent 250 dollars for 4 1/2 squads of firewarriors, 2 ethereals, one railhead, one skyray, 3 broadsides, 6 battlesuits, 3 squads of drones, 2 squads of 20 kroot, 3 stealth suits (The old ones, mind you), a commander, and tons of spare pieces that equal about $50+.
