"We're certain," Lin nodded, "Half the fun of traveling is meeting and getting to know new people. We wouldn't have gotten to know half the people we do now if we didn't stop and spend time with them. Don't worry, it's nothing serious. Just a relaxing outing that requires one or two stops, the rest is just looking."

She motioned for Iorlas to join them and of course it helped Miyuki was still in some shape or form holding onto the girl.

"Really, I just like looking at the shops because I've seen craftsmen from other areas and I find it interesting the differences."

In otherwords Lin wasn't always out to buy something.

Iorlas smiled and blushed slightly. "If you're certain, then ..."

"We are," Earendil grinned. "Anyways, I think by now it would be best just to get Miyuki's staff and then stop somewhere for lunch. It would be a good opportunity for Iorlas to meet some of the rest of our group, I believe someone mentioned something about her doing just that? Finding out a bit about the places we're all from, too."

"Yea!" Miyuki nodded, "Iorlas did say she would like to meet everyone else."

At this point any thoughts Miyuki had about how strange her ada's comments was about how she met up with Iorlas flew out of her mind. She just wasn't thinking about that at the moment.

"Then it's settled," Earendil grinned, pleased. "Now ... I think we might have gotten a bit turned around. Iorlas, do you know which way the weapons shop is?"

Iorlas nodded. "One street over, right by the square. It's not far."

Earendil smiled and bowed slightly. "Lead the way, milady," he said in a teasing sort of tone.

Lin smiled at that, she knew how Earendil was at times.

"Let's go!"
Miyuki nodded, even if she wasn't a big weapons person, she still liked looking at them.

Iorlas was a little flustered by all of the attention, but she led the group down the street and to the weapons shop.

Considering the small size of the town, it was quite a large shop - at least twice the size of the manuscript shop. All of it was display: one wall was swords and shields, the back wall was all armour, the third wall was long-handled weapons - staffs and spears and the like. In the middle of the shop were aisles of displays, mostly of ranged weapons: bows, crossbows, arrows and bolts, among other things.

Earendil looked around and let out a low and appreciative whistle. "This is some nice stuff," he murmured.

"And quite a variety," Lin admitted.

Of course it was a weapon's shop it needed variety, but this was a far larger variety than Lin would have imagined for a weapon's shop in a small town.

"I'm impressed..."

"We should check out the staffs for Miyuki," Earendil suggested. He looked over at Miyuki. "Come on, Miyuki, let go of Iorlas long enough to pick out a staff."

He motioned for her to join him and Lin by the staffs at the far wall.

"Okay...." Miyuki let go after a moment or two.

She reminded herself it was this or blade work and blade work was far worse. Not that she never had used a staff before, but she had to make the effort, she said she would after all.

She tottered over to the staffs on the far wall and gave a good look at them. Though she didn't know anything about them to make a good choice.

Iorlas meandered around the shop while Earendil helped Miyuki to choose a staff.

"Try this one," he suggested, taking one down and holding it out to her. It was a bit longer than she was tall, an appropriate height, but if it didn't weigh properly in her hand, then the height was moot.

Miyuki took it with both hands before holding it carefully with one hand, and transferring it to the other. It was kind of on the heavy side, she wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not.

"How will I know if it's okay?"
she finally asked.

"You want it to feel good when you hold it," Earendil replied, watching her carefully as she passed the staff from one hand to the other. "That one seems a bit heavy for you ... it shouldn't feel heavy, but it should feel solid. So when you pass it from one hand to the other, it should be easy to do it, and it shouldn't make your hand dip down when you catch it, like that one is, but it shouldn't be too light that it would easily be knocked out of your hand."

He chose another staff, felt it for its weight, and held it out to Miyuki, holding out his other hand to take the first one back. "Here, try this one."

Miyuki handed the other staff back to her ada before taking the other one. This one actually was not as heavy as the last one and she was able to switch it from hand to hand with ease.

"How do you know if it's too light?"
she wasn't so sure, and part of it was just inexperience.

Earendil put the first staff back on the hooks. He had to think about the answer to that particular question. It wasn't nearly as easy to explain.

"Well," he murmured, "if you toss it back and forth and it goes so light and so fast that it tips a bit, or you fumble it, or you have trouble catching it, then it's too light. Something that can toss easily and you can catch without it going flying."

He paused a moment, then added, "And that won't slow down too much when you toss it. Make sure it keeps its speed."

If it was too light, it would take too long to get to the other hand.

Miyuki looked at the staff for a moment, uncertain she did give it a go trying to toss it lightly back and forth. It wasn't something she had tried, it wasn't hard to do but it was her inexperience that was making it difficult for her to decide.

"I'm not sure,"
she finally admitted to her ada.
