Alexi laughed at how Zain regarded the boy as a zombie.
"He's not a zombie, silly, he's a human," she told him through giggles. "Although...I've never seen him before."
It was true; in all of the time Alexi had spent on the grounds of the temple, she had never run into the boy before. It was funny how so many people could be brought together by one event.
As the two were enjoying their conversation, Total looked on in sadness.
She seems really happy, he thought to himself. I hope she hasn't forgotten me.

Shinichi felt so left out as they conversed, but he didn’t want to be around girls if it could be helped. Though he didn’t like the way Zain seemed to completely ignore him. He was touched about what the other said though, for the wish, he loved Zain just as much, but then they pushed him aside once more. His wings wilted more as he started crawling back towards the water line. Finally back to the water, he sighed and felt his scales become re-hydrated and finally comfortable. He turned himself so his chest was still on the beach and his tail in the water as he watched the others interact.
Sighing, he wished that he wasn’t so shy sometimes, that he didn’t have all of those anxieties, but it came from years spent alone. Humming to himself softly, he hoped Zain would return to his side once more, but it looked like he was having a lot of fun, so maybe he shouldn’t bother him. He just wanted to have Zain by his side again to tell him everything was okay and that they were safe, that they’ll be okay, because if Zain said it, he believed it. Nothing would be okay until the other merman said it was, because then he felt safe, because then he knew Zain was there to keep him safe and be by his side.

Also a bit left out in the conversation, Imaru decided to approach Shinichi. He did see Zain had his book, and while excited, decided it would be wiser to try to get the book back at a different time. It would be fine, so long as he didn't try to eat it again...
"So, Shinichi." Imaru had been observing the expression on Shinichi's face for a while now, while listening in on Zain, Alexi and Total's conversation. Mostly, anyway. "I can tell Zain really adores you." He laughed very gently and softly. "He did that cute thing people do when they love someone so much that they take the chance to mention it to someone else. A lot of people would give for someone to wish for forever with them."
Imaru took a moment to wonder about what made him digress a bit on the subject, but quickly shook it off.

"Not a zombie, eh?!" the prince said sceptically. "I don't understand why everyone keeps saying that, because it's SO OBVIOUS to ME!"
A lot of things were obvious to Zain that didn't add up to everyone else, but why should that damage his credibility in this very important issue? Sure, he didn't walk like a zombie or talk like a zombie or look like a zombie (hot damn, he looked nothing like a zombie) but his hypothesis was still very sound.
Perhaps he could prove it correct by carrying out the Ultimate Test for Zombieosity.
"If you do not believe me, I shall carry out the Ultimate Test for Zombieosity!" he proclaimed thusly. "Watch and learn from the zombie detecting master, my little boy and plant friends."
The operation began by turning his considerable amount of body around. It was carried out with the excruciating intricacy of a woman driver attempting to parallel park.* He eventually managed it by turning onto his side and bending forward for his head to touch his tail, and then suddenly flinging the tail back with all of his might (and almost knocking boy and plant down in the process).
The second phase was to reach the water's edge, where Imaru stood, talking politely to Shinichi. If Zain hadn't been so busy concentrating on enacting the Ultimate Test for Zombieosity, he might have realised he'd been ignoring his mate, felt bad and given him lots and lots of attention when they reunited. He often tended to forget about his Chi-chi when caught up in the swell of new people and experiences and objects, but it rarely mattered in his mind because he knew he would always return - the problem was, Shinichi didn't know that, and it played on his anxieties. It wasn't that Zain was insensitive. Well, not really.
He eventually managed to cross the distance using a combination of army-style elbow-dragging and the Worm. He was face to face with Imaru's shins, and this was where the final stage - the true Ultimate Test - came into play.
He gathered up all of his strength for what he was going to have to do.
"SNEAK ATTACK!" he yelled once prepared, launching himself forward in some awkward way which was probably related to his powerful tail, and barrelling straight into Imaru's legs. The two were set on course for full immersion in the lapping waves.
Exactly how this would prove Imaru was a zombie made no sense to anyone at this point in time.
((*and as a woman driver myself, I feel I can still joke about all other woman drivers who drive horribly =D))

When Imaru could get his head above water, the most that could be made out of what he was saying was "AAGGHHH".
THIS was that nagging reminder that fish people were not to be trusted.
THIS was the way he would die.
Imaru did his best to try to break and swim free of Zain, but the task proved difficult because of the sheer power of Zain's swimming ability. All Imaru could do was cling to the fish in hopes he wasn't being pummeled against a rock, or drowned. He didn't have much breath to hold either, as he was too busy screaming it out.

Well, this was working out perfectly. Sure, Zain hadn't planned to take him for a swim - just to knock him over - but now that he was back in his natural element, the instinct to swim was itching at the back of his brain. So, his arms around Imaru's waist, he dragged him along for the ride. His tail was so powerful they could perform a circuit of that entire part of the bay in seconds, and as the man screamed like a baby in his arms, Zain matched his volume with laughter.
"Calm down, you scaredy catfish!" he shouted, though under the water it came out as a lot of dolphin-like squealing and chattering that must have sounded rather ungodly to the human in his state of terror.
They must have spent no more than twenty seconds under the water, but with Imaru noiselessly screaming fit to bust, Zain carried him back to the surface and held him, floating as easily as before, with his head an easy two feet clear of the undulating water.
That didn't stop him from screaming, though.
Well, that didn't matter. Zain could still enjoy this time pressed against the pretty young man.
Smirking, the hunger that sometimes came into his eyes when he looked at Shinichi returning, he nuzzled forward and ran his tongue up the length of neck beneath Imaru's right ear. The overpowering taste of salt as it scraped along his soft skin, so incredibly familiar, closed the species gap between them, in the mer's mind. As long as he was part of the water, he was part of them. He belonged to them. "You're pretty."

"S... So now am I clear of the zombie accusations, now that I know you're not trying to kill me?!" Imaru asked, breathless, his voice like a whimpering 9 year old who just went through a haunted house. After regaining his senses a bit, filling his lungs with precious, precious oxygen, Imaru looked around at the others wondering what the ordeal looked like through their eyes.
It had been a long evening, long morning, and it looked like the day wasn't done with him yet. Imaru wondered how much more excitement he could take. This is why he usually stayed out of the way of others. Not that he didn't like them, but more that he wasn't prepared for the taxing demand socializing entailed. Still, fish assault aside, Imaru could admit to himself that maybe, just maybe, he was enjoying this.
And that's when he felt tounge against his neck up to his ear. His body reacted with a tense shiver, one the fish boy was sure to have picked up as even his very toes curled in reaction.
Despite the alarming gesture, Imaru's mind quickly focused on an issue more pressing... he was becoming hungry. Hungry for sushi and ocean salad. Perhaps it was best not to mention this fact.

"Hm? Zombie?" said Zain, apparently forgetting the entire point of everything that had happened up until that point. Fortunately, not for long. He wasn't that dense. "Oh yeah, my bad. Yup, you're clear, and I'm not trying to kill you."
He grinned, tongue flicking up to the lobe of his ear. "You're far too tasty to kill."

"I could REALLY go for sushi right now."
It came out of nowhere, really. Just blurted out like that. Like as if his thoughts flooded overtime, pushing the top idea out. It really had nothing to do with the fact he was getting a bath (which he wanted, albeit not like this) but simply that his brain could only hold three thoughts at a time.
The other two thoughts were of fish molestation, the other of Shinichi.
"Yo, you know, I just put out a good word to your boyfriend about you. Cause uh, you know, he looks so left out. Maybe you should put your tongue on him instead? Hahahaheeeeh? Oooh...."

"Boyfriend?" the prince purred, rubbing against his catch in a way many humans would deem uncomfortably intimate for a first date, "I don't have a boyfriend."
Well, he didn't. Not really. Not properly. Sort of.
He didn't have a boyfriend right then, at that instant. Not when he was having fun with his new human.
"What's sushi?"

Shinichi had been watching the entire act, his heart breaking at the sight. He knew he would only be able to hold Zain’s attention for so long, but hearing those words… it hurt more than any blade would. Moving himself slowly into the water, he stayed close to the bottom and found himself a place to rest on a flat rock. Were all of Zain’s words lies? Was he just leading him on this entire time, taking advantage of his anxieties and keeping him around for a good lay? Looking down to the necklace the other gave him, he felt his heart break a little more.
Pulling the jewels off from around his neck, he looked up to where Zain had been floating; a few tears escaping his cerulean eyes mix with the water around him before flinging the necklace up at the other. With this done, he swam away, on his own once more. He found a small coral reef off the beach and rested among the anemone and coral as he finally gave in to his sadness and despair. Perhaps he’d move on and stay with these people here on this island somehow, but it’d be hard, he was alone again. Maybe he could go back to his mother… no that wouldn’t work, he wasn’t accepted there anymore either. Sniffling, he rested on his stomach and crossed his arms in front of himself, resting his forehead on his arms in defeat.

The ordeal that followed made Alexi laugh so hard that she thought her sides would burst. She felt bad for Imaru because he was dragged under the water potentially to his doom, but the way Zain went about carrying out his Ultimate Test for Zombieosity was quite entertaining. She breathed a sigh of relief, however, when Zain came to the conclusion that the boy was not a zombie and released him.
"That was a close one," she said to herself.
Feeling slightly left out, Alexi sat down on the beach to watch the water for a little while. As she watched the boy and the two mermen interact, she thought about romance and what it would be like to have a relationship with someone. After a few minutes she felt a slight touch on the lower part of her right leg. It was Total.
"I'm here," he told her, sensing her emotions. He smiled at her softly and she smiled back.
But this moment was not to last long. Alexi perked up when someone said "sushi".
"Sushi's a Japanese dish," the girl explained. "It consists of rice, fish or other seafood wrapped in seaweed. I've heard it's good, but I've never had it because I'm not one for seafood."

"OW!" cried Zain, as the very heavy, very pointy necklace smacked him in the bottom while he leaned around to kiss Imaru on the cheek.
He rubbed his behind, plunging his head down to see what had happened. Unfortunately, this meant a rather rocky ride on the waves for Imaru. "Chi-chi, what's up with you?!" he shouted, "Can't you see I'm totally busy playing with the human?!"
Shinichi didn't reply - probably because he was too busy swimming away as fast as he could. Zain blinked at his retreating figure. That wasn't normal. It rang alarm bells.
Let's see, let's see. What had just happened, in reverse order:
Kiss - fondle - sushi? - fondle - lick - fondle - boyfriend, no boyfriend - tasty - lick - fondle -
Wait. Back up. I don't have a boyfriend.
Sledgehammer to the brain.
Oh, s**t, he panicked, I've done a bad thing.
"CHI-CHI!" he shrieked, dropping Imaru as if he'd never been carrying anything at all and racing after the white-haired merman. "I DIDN'T MEAN IT!"
He'd only swam a few seconds when he came screeching to a halt again, however. THE NECKLACE! He swam back, searching, and soon found it resting, glittery and majestic, on the sea floor beneath their encounter. No time to check whether Imaru had survived. He had more important things to attend to. Imaru who?
"Chi-chi! Chi-chi!" he cried, again and again, making a rapid circuit of the beach and quickly heading offshore. "Chi-chi! I'm sorry! Where are you?!"

Sniffling softly, Shinichi remained immobile in his spot. A few fish had swum over to him and around him; he knew they could sense his distress. He lifted his head enough so he was looking at the fish that swam by, his hand reaching up slightly to pet the side of the fish as it swam by, the scales rough on his fingers. He sniffled once more; he felt lost now, so many emotions and questions running rampant through his confused head, but a cry echoed through the water, catching his attention.
That voice, it was Zain. What could he possibly want now? Sighing, he looked up slightly before flattening himself in the sand and rocks a little more. He didn’t want to talk with the other, but it looked like the other was regretting his words and actions. As Zain drew closer, he lifted his tail up slightly to make his presence know, his wings were fanned out in the water, though they were floating sadly beside him. He couldn’t bring himself to use his voice; he knew he wouldn’t be able to muster up the words. Biting his lip, he reached up to touch another fish that had swum in close to him.

Zain pounced upon his pale quarry the second he caught a glimpse of fin.
"Shinichi!" he cried, smothering the smaller man against the coral with a huge amount of body and love, "I'm so sorry!! I didn't mean it! I love you!"
