Shinichi saw the girl barreling towards them and panicked, shrinking down slightly as she got close. He bit his lip and kept quiet, moving back out of the sand he partially burred himself in and started to slowly crawl away from them. Even if Zain was there, he didn’t want to be around the girl. He never had any good experiences with females at all. He had a light scar over his eye from one, but it was hardly noticeable, which he was thankful for, but it still hurt. It almost made him blind in that eye.
Hearing that the stranger had lost a book, however, made him freeze and remember something he and Zain had found. Was that the same notebook he was talking about? It had to be, there were no other ones in the ocean or around the beach at the time. Turning around and remaining in his spot, he lowered himself back onto the sand on his stomach and sheepishly opened his mouth to speak. “Well… Zain and I… we found a book of some kind… maybe that’s what you’re looking for? Zain… he has it right now…” His voice was small, and probably inaudible, but he said what he wanted to say.

Alexi smiled as Imaru patted her shoulder. But something didn't seem right. "Wait...a pencil?" she asked. "Cigar? I thought psychedelic arts meant..." She couldn't exactly finish her sentence. So the prince had been chasing the boy around because he thought his pencil was a cigar? So that's what he meant by psychedelic arts... "N-never mind," Alexi said, turning red in embarassment. Just then something hit the back of her leg. Hard. "OWW!" she screamed, looking down. Total had been running at full speed and decided to slam himself--flower pot and all--into her. "What's your problem Total?" the girl said as she rubbed her leg. "Me? What's the problem with you?!" the plant asked. "I'm trying to stay by your side and all you can think about is food and psychedelic arts?!" Alexi was taken aback. Total was not one to get angry easily. But she hadn't done anything worth getting angry over...what was wrong with him?

Having barrelled at full speed down the beach alongside his new female friend who was obviously very cool if she also wanted to partake in the mysterious and wonderful psychedelic arts, Zain came to an abrupt halt as the zombie approached them and began talking rationally. He cocked his head, looking up at him with interest.
Huh.
He was pretty cute.
The first part of Imaru's informative talk washed over him without being heard as he examined and appreciated his cuteness. Something jumped out at him from the next part, though: book. Now why did that ring a bell? Ah, yes.
"You mean this?" he grinned, pulling the bitten, soaking wet sketchbook out of his pouch and waving it up at the zombie. "I liked the picture of the octopus. It tasted like crap, though. You might wanna think about buying something more yummy next time. Do they make eel-flavored books?"

"Octopus?" Alexi asked curiously. "I've never seen one! What's it look like? Can I see the picture?" Total looked at her with disdain. He was still frustrated. Why doesn't she get it?! He thought angrily to himself. Ugh, girls sometimes are so... He was brought out of his thoughts by what Alexi said next. "Eel-flavored books? No...I don't think they make those," she said. "But you could invent them! Heck, they might become the next big thing!"
((Ugh...too short ><))

Zain stared up at the girl in shock, horror, dismay, and many other sorts of associated emotions.
"NO! My book!" he cried, hugging it to his chest like a child with its favourite doll. It didn't matter that he'd barely had it half an hour and it really meant nothing of value to him at all. It was his. "I found it fair and square!"
Well, technically this wasn't true, as Shinichi had been the one to point it out in the sand... but it didn't matter! It. Was. His.
He shoved the book back down inside his pouch as if one of the humans might suddenly lunge forward and try to snatch it away, and then... noticed the fifth person on the scene, lurking just behind Alexi's legs.
He fell to the ground, staring at it from its own level. It stared back.
He stared.
It stared.
They stared.
The staring never seemed to end... until, abruptly, Zain reached out and grabbed Total with both hands around his plant pot, pulling him close and shaking him.
"SO CUTE!!" he squealed, whirling the plant through the air, "PUPPY SO CUTE! PUPPY PUPPY PUPPY~"
But something was wrong. Zain stopped swooping Total around, and stared at him hard once again. He tugged at one of his leaves, then felt the leafy material between his finger and thumb. (He may have technically been molesting the sentient plant, but as this was for the twin causes of examination and science it didn't matter.)
As you can see, nothing gets past our bright and princely prince.
"You is not puppy," he said, glaring, this time with utmost suspicion, into Total's beady eyes. "Puppies is fluffy. What is you?!"

The girl giggled as the prince held onto the book as if it was his most prized possession.
"I don't want to take it," she said. "I just wanted to see a picture; that's all."
But by the way he put the book into his pouch she could tell she wouldn't be seeing the 8-legged creature's picture any time soon. She was a little upset.
All of a sudden she heard the prince cry out, "PUPPY!" Alexi turned to notice that he had caught sight of Total, and was now squeezing and shaking and molesting him with happiness. Total did not seem to be enjoying it.
"Eh...." she said uncomfortably. "T-Total?"
Dirt was spewing everywhere from the pot as the little plant was shook up and down and around. Looks like her friend would need a little fixing up when the prince was done with him.
The girl couldn't help it; despite the fact that her friend's situation was clearly uncomfortable, it was unbearably funny all at the same time. Still, she had to do something.
"Umm...that's not a puppy," Alexi said, trying to help Total's situation. "He's a plant, and he's my friend."
"Yes," Total said. "Now please...will you quit shaking me around? I feel like I'm about to toss my fertilizer."
((Toss my fertilizer = Total's equivalent of tossing his cookies, or throwing up XD))

Zain blinked at Alexi and Total.
"Plant," he repeated, looking at the creature in his hands.
...
"Why do you talk?" he asked innocently. Then, his voice became rather breathy. "...Are you... magical...?"

"Uhh..." Total didn't know how to reply to the prince's question. "I...I really don't know. It's...hard to explain..."
"I don't know either," Alexi added. "We met back during the war. He was just about to get..."
"That's enough Alexi!" Total yelled, using a vine to hit her. Unfortunately, he hit her too hard and caused her to fall over.
She hit the sand with a thud! but was relatively unharmed. Looking at her wrist she saw she had a fairly large red mark on it from the vine. It hurt a bit, but she'd be fine.
Total looked away. He truly hadn't meant to hurt her, or even hit her. Stupid stupid stupid! he thought, smacking himself in the face with his left leaf arm.

"BAD magical plant!" said Zain, giving him another hard shake. "VERY naughty! Evil!"
He shook the pot a few more times, but it grew gradually more vigorous. He paused, thinking.
"...Could you grant me a wish?" he whispered, looking hopefully, wide-eyed into the plant's soul. Would he be able to resist those big, sparkly eyes?

Total didn't take the extra shakes well. A lot of the dirt from his pot fell out and scattered across the beach. He'd be dead soon if someone didn't do something.
"Alexi, please!" he cried out, turning to his friend who was still sitting on the beach. "Help me!"
"Why should I?" she asked. "You hit me."
"I know I did, and I'm sorry! I didn't mean to! I just didn't want to talk about that event!"
"Hmm..."
The prince continued shaking him, but then he asked about a wish. Total looked back at him and saw the prince gazing at him adorably.
His expression...reminds me of Alexi when she gets really excited about something, he thought to himself.
"Please do something!" Total yelled out to Alexi.
"I'm still mulling it over," she replied. "Give me about an hour."
"An hour?! We don't have that long! Do something NOW!"
"Okay, okay," the girl said, standing up and walking over to where the prince was. "I don't know what kind of wish you're talking about, but maybe I can grant it in his place."

"...Yes... of course...!" said Zainire wondrously, gently setting down the plant and gazing up at Alexi with a kind of awe, "Why didn't I see it before...?"
It must have been obvious by now, even to a bystander, that some fine mer logic was about to come out of his mouth.
"As the guardian of the magical plant... the true magic must lie with you!"
It just kept on coming, didn't it?
He prostrated himself on the ground - which wasn't a difficult or impressive movement, as he was already lying flat on his belly anyway - and, arms outstretched, offered his praise to the carer of the magical plant.
"O wise and benevolent keeper of the Magical Plant of Wisdom and Knowledge and Stuff," he began grandly, managing to make his voice heard even though his face was shoved into the sand, "We have travelled many miles and overcome many obstacles to seek your wisdom and knowledge and stuff today. If you could grant us the benefit of your mystical arts and godly powers we would be forever in your debt!"

Alexi blushed. She hadn't expected the prince's mannerisms to be so...full of grandeur. He was honoring her like he would the Overseer, and it was kind of embarassing. But also funny.
She giggled slightly.
"Uhh...I'm...not sure what to say, I..." she started, massaging the back of her neck. "I'm not as impressive as you think, but maybe I can grant you a wish...as long as it isn't outlandish..."

Turning his head to one side in order to look, one-eyed, up at the Keeper of the Magical Plant of Wisdom and Knowledge and Stuff, his face more covered in sand than it already was, the prince knew that now that he had secured a wish, he had to... think of something to wish for.
He rolled onto his back, looking up at the sky as he thought. When he first came up to the surface as a child, he'd been afraid of the sky... and the air... and the strange noises, and the sound of human voices...
It was all so different. He'd cried.
His mom had told him off so badly for that. She'd told him that if he was ever going to be king, he couldn't afford to let things overwhelm him. He had to be strong, like the immovable cliffs that supported all of the coral outside the city. He was meant to be the face on which everything else rests. She said she wouldn't accept a son who was more like the coral itself - pretty to look at and showy, but more delicate than an angelfish's spine. She never knew, but he cried again later that night, for disappointing her. He'd always remember it because Afayana, his foster mother, came into the room and held him, making him laugh with silly songs and jokes until he felt better. Whenever he thought about that, it made him remember that he loved her, and that maybe she loved him, too, even though he always used to be running off and hurting their family's reputation. Nah, he still did that - scratch the past tense.
He stared up at the swirling clouds, eyes slightly glazed.
"...First of all, I wish that Shinichi and I can be together forever," he eventually said, very earnestly. "Because I love him. Then I wish we could rule together. I'd be king, and my mother would be happy. I also wish my family could all get along even though some are gypsies and some are nobles and some are adopted and some are blood. I wish I didn't keep upsetting people, and that they'd just let me help like I want to."
A short silence fell. The prince, who'd kept on staring seriously at the sky, suddenly tilted his head back and grinned at the tomboyish girl. "But if you can't do any of that... I wish I knew your name!"

Alexi was moved by the prince's words. He seemed truly genuine about wanting all those things, and it made her wish that she could give them to him. She looked over at the other merman, the one called Shinichi and smiled. He seemed timid, but she could sense a definite affection for the prince. They were cute together.
"Unfortunately, I can't give you any of that," the girl said. "I'm not endowed with magical powers that transcend the Gods. But I can honestly say that you're well on your way to getting those things." She smiled. "My name's Alexi. Alexi Silver. You already know Total over there." She pointed to her plant friend, who was now attempting to pick up the dirt from the sand and stuff it back into his flower pot.
"What's your name?" she asked.

With a happy, dolphin-like series of purrs and clicks Zainire rolled right over energetically once, and then back in the direction he'd come. If at some point either of the humans had forgotten that they were talking to a giant man-fish, it certainly reminded them even as he grinned up at them happily again. Or, at Alexi to be more specific.
"Nice to meet you! I'm Zain!" he enthused.
"That's Pretty Shinichi over there," Zain continued, gesturing back towards his partner.
"And this," he concluded, pointing up at Imaru, "Is Mr. Zombie."
He lowered his voice, glancing around dramatically, as if he were sharing a secret with Alexi. "Mr. E. Zombie."
