Dusting as much sand as possible off of himself, Imaru decided it was time to get off the beach already. Sulking wasn't his style, anyway. That and, he probably needed a bath at this point.

It didn't take very many steps before Imaru stepped on something wet and soggy. He lifted his foot up and stared at the wad of chewed up paper. While at first he didn't care or think much of it, he began to wonder if by chance it could be his sketchbook.

"Yeah, no use looking if it's already torn apart by the ocean waves." He shook his head twice quickly as if to physically remove the pout of a face he had on, and emerged sporting a ridiculous school-boy smile. He turned to the waves while walking backwards to the temple.

"HEY OCEAN!" He cupped his hands to his mouth to project his voice. "I HOPE MY BOOK TASTED DELICIOUS, JERK!"

Zainire was back in the deeper water by this point, floating on his back and performing the occassional somersault, bending himself backwards like a cat chasing its tail in anti-gravity.

"La la la la," he sang, alternating between tuneful and tuneless. His head broke the surface of the water on the back of a wave, and he shook his head extravagantly. Most of his long, wet hair fell back out of his face, leaving just a little bit around his eyes. Wet and plastered, it almost resembled face paint. He pulled this back, too, treading the water... if treading the water is what it can be called when you're so at one with the element you can float in place without the slightest bit of effort. "Ahhhh~"

The prince opened his eyes, and happened to be facing the beach. He squealed, and ducked back down into the water, leaving only a pair of wide, grey eyes and the upper part of his head exposed to the cold morning air.

"Chi-chi!" he hissed to his second-in-command, not at all aware of whether he was actually nearby or not, "It's the corpse from before! It's ALIVE!"

He watched the figure moving along the beach, eyes narrowing. It was moving very slowly. At one point, around the place they'd found the book, it seemed to stagger and drag its foot, shaking it and stumbling. Zain's eyes were like slits in his face by this point.

"It's a zombie."

There was no need to panic. Zain was trained for this exact sort of situation. He glanced around, tactically, working on his tactics. Tactically, the beach was totally bare, with no spots for hiding or stealthy approaches. Bad for tactics. Bugger. What other tactics did he know? Hmm. Utilise your surroundings. But his surroundings weren't helping him!

A wave of despair overcame the young prince. Had nothing in his lifetime prepared him for facing down the encroaching zombie army apocalypse of 2009?! Just what had his tutors been doing all these years, teaching him useless things like ripostes and counter-stances?! WHAT GOOD WAS ANY OF IT NOW?!

"Shinichi!" he barked, racing over to his companion. Grabbing him by his shoulders, Zain looked into his eyes with the greatest seriousness and utmost urgency, his voice filled with the passion of their desperate situation. "If I never come out of this alive, I want you to know that I've loved you more than I've loved any other man in my whole entire life."

As if expecting an interruption, he suddenly began speaking louder, with greater hurry... but no less drama. "I know this is hard for you, and I know you're going to ask that I please stay, but I cannot. This is something I must do. For you. For us..." A pause. "For Gaia."

He kissed his mate. Hard. His lips lingered on the pale merman's like the rays of sunset over their watery kingdom, when all at once he was gone, leaving nothing but the legacy of sweet memories in his wake! He charged through the water, but as there wasn't all that much water in the shallows anyway ended up dragging himself up onto the shore after coming face-first with the sandy bed.

Perhaps he should have thought this through a little more. Utilise your surroundings, Zainire. That's it! He fished a rock from the sand, yanking it out of the ground as if it were his last chance at survival, and turned to face the ultimate threat to Gaia. He was actually a lot smaller up close. And much further down the beach than he'd anticipated. Crap. Flop, flop. Damn it. And so, Zain resorted to rolling again to shift himself down the battlefield.

"HEY OCEAN! I HOPE MY BOOK TASTED DELICIOUS!"

"THE OCEAN DOESN'T EAT, STUPID!" he yelled back, coming to a rest on his side, slightly out of breath, a few metres away from the zombie. "AND IF IT DID AT LEAST IT WOULDN'T EAT BRAINS! UNLIKE YOU! ...BRAIN-EATER!"

Shinichi had been watching the figure on the beach as Zain frolicked in the water. He was concerned for the person on the beach, they looked to be breathing, maybe even sleeping, but would he be okay? Was he going to live or was he dying there on the beach? Giving a soft hum, he remained rooted in his spot and stretching his tail before finally swimming away. He hoped the man would be alright, he wasn’t able to surface to help him, he felt useless, but then Zain was talking.

He was lost in the other’s words, they were running together and confusing him, but he was able to pick up on a few of the words. Then, all of a sudden, the other was planting a searing kiss on his lips, making him gasp, yet he stayed relaxed in the other’s arms. He remembered the other’s last few words before the kiss. He was going to fight; Shin didn’t want him to go fight. The white haired merman made a grab for him to stay put, but he was too fast and already advancing on the beach.

Following fast, Shinichi let his stomach meet the beach, his wings pressing close to his head so he wouldn’t lag behind and stream through the water. By the time he caught up to Zain, he was already rolling his way onto the beach. Drat, he was too late. Pulling himself free from the water, he dragged himself slowly onto the beach, a tactic he used to get onto the beach to sunbath, but this time it was for a completely different reason.

What if Zain got hurt? What if he really didn’t see him again? Shinichi wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he let something happen to Zain. He loved the merman so much, but he was too shy to admit it, he would have done anything for the other, he’d bend over backwards to prove himself to the other and keep him at his side, his only friend and now… lover? He didn’t know, but he didn’t want to be alone again, never again. It hurt too much to think about, his hearth tightened in his chest and he started feeling an anxiety attack start to size him, but he kept trudging along to get his Zain back. “Zain, no! He’s not a zombie!” Was all he could muster to say before his breath left him, sticking in his chest as he tried reaching for the other merman rolling onto the beach.

"Shinichi! Stay back!" Zain commanded, propping himself up on one arm on his side and waving the other in a gesture that bade his friend to keep away. "It's too dangerous!"

Lovely Chi-chi's entrance onto the zombie warground complicated things. Protecting the white-haired merman was now the proud, possessive prince's priority. Precisely. Forget defending Gaia - there were greater things at stake here!

Fortunately, his body was already forming a barrier on the sand between the awful monster - who, now that he was close up, didn't look all that monstrous - and come to think of it, zombies couldn't speak, could they? - and his pet. For now, he'd stay on the defensive, until he could convince Shinichi to get to a safer distance.

And as if the ocean heard his insult, it seemingly threw a large fishman at him in angry reply. Imaru did his best to muffle a startled yelp, but it came out anyway, and he lost his footing to the sand. His a** planted on the ground, Imaru had nothing to do but stare Zain up and down, unable to hide the nervousness on his face.

"Gweeh! F-Fishdude!" He felt like a cornered mouse, unable to move, a million escape possibilities flipping through his mind, none of them sticking long enough for him to decide on a course of action. This was the almighty Clam's last laugh, watching his most skeptical of followers getting devoured by a beautiful fish-man, taunted to his death, lured by the disappearance of his sketchbook. Should he repent? Should he say sorry? Was he peeing his pants?

A course of action finally plotted out quickly, and Imaru reached in his pockets for anything he could find. His fingers grazed a few objects that would just have to do.

A bit shakily, Imaru whipped out his hand and lunged the objects at the fish man. A mechanical pencil and worn out eraser made contact with Zain, before bouncing off his chest and forehead without much damage at all.

((Okay I lied. I'll post it here instead XD))

The girl walked along the beach looking out at the ocean. It was so peaceful at this time of day; the water rippling just off the shore gave her a sense of calm that she hadn't felt in quite some time. Although the temple had been destroyed, she felt evidence of a new beginning, a new era of hope and peace.

"Alexi, look!" her plant friend called out to her. The girl looked up.
"What is it Total?" she asked.
"Look! Out in the ocean! There's...!"
Alexi looked further out in the distance, brushing her freshly cut hair off her face. She couldn't exactly make out who it was, but she could tell there were people nearby. One was on the beach, and seemed to be yelling at the two figures in the water. But then she noticed something even more peculiar. The people in the water seemed to be...
"Mermen?" she asked herself. "C'mon Total! Let's go see what's going on!" Alexi took off towards the people in the distance.
"Wait up Alexi! Don't you know I can't run that well?!" Total yelled out, but it was too late. The girl was already too far away.
"Oy vey..." he sighed to himself, trying to maintain a steady pace.

Distracted from protecting his mate, Zain blinked curiously at the flailing monster, arm falling back to his side, as he fell back and began searching his person. Then, as the little eraser came hurtling at him and bounced harmlessly off his chest, his face became totally Srs Business.

"...Bringing out the artillery, eh, Mr Evil Zombie?" he said gravely, "Well... this means war."

And war meant lifting up the big ol' rock in his hand and chucking it as hard as he could - which was pretty damn hard - in the zombie-who-probably-wasnt-a-zombie's direction. (But it was okay, he could still be a zombie for the duration of the war games.) Or at least, it would have... if he hadn't been distracted by the object that flew at him next.

"GASP," he gasped, catching it in midair after it bounced off his forehead. "Is this what I think it is?!"

It probably wasn't.

"IT'S A CIGAR!" he exclaimed excitedly, dropping his makeshift weapon in order to hold up the pencil in both hands with a look of sheer jubilation. Okay, it definitely wasn't. "I've heard about these things!! How do you make it work?!"

Flopping onto his back like a kitten with a ball of yarn, he turned it over, bit it, sniffed it, bit it again. Fiddling with the end, he somehow managed to press it correctly, causing the stick of lead to protrude with a click. "Oooooooooooooh...!"

"You, Zombie!" he cried authoritatively, flinging out his arm and beckoning in the creature's direction. Well, as authoritatively as a fish-man lying on his back in wet sand playing with a pencil can be. Which is actually surprisingly authoritative. It must have been his princely air. "I demand that you reveal to me the secrets of your magical drug stick!"

Shinichi had been paralaized by his anxiety, he was scared of losing Zain, he didn’t want him hurt in no way shape or form. His breath was still caught in his chest as he clutched onto the other’s arm, holding him tight as he tried to bring the other back to the ocean, but it was no good. He lifted his eyes up in time to see two mysterious objects hurled at his lover, his heart sinking in his chest. The white haired merman had no idea if they were harmful or not, but he didn’t want to take the risk.

After the first just bounced harmlessly off Zain’s person, he was perplexed. Why would this human throw something harmless if they were meaning to do damage? In any event, Shinichi realized that this man was in fact just as harmless as the eraser and pencil he threw. This made the other sigh in relief as the other merman rolled onto his back and started his usual way of examining things. Flopping down onto his stomach and resting his chin on the sand, Shinichi finally caught his breath, his frilled, puffed up wings finally relaxing where the rested, stretched out on the sand.

His nerves were fried; the other did this to him any time he would go out to war. He was a panicking mess every time, always worrying if his only friend would come back alive or not, it was a constant struggle. Nothing could ease that pain, but Zain seemed to be the only one who could. His heart would beat rapidly when the other would return to him, embracing him and telling him everything was alright. Sure, maybe he’d break out in a torrent of tears when he returned, and sure, maybe he’d hit the other on the chest and tell him he shouldn’t be out there like that, but it was all made better by the darker merman by just a hug and a few simple words.

Looking over to the one laying beside him, Shinichi couldn’t help but give a soft smile. Zain looked so carefree now that he was examining a new object instead of focusing on battle. “Zain… I don’t think he’s a zombie… he’s just a human…” Shinichi knew the other wasn’t listening; he was too absorbed in the object and demanding on how it worked and what its uses were. At least he was alright, that was Shinichi’s main and only concern when he first left the water.

Alexi got closer to the action and observed for a little while. It seemed like the mermen were upset about something.
I've got to get their attention, she thought. But how?
All of a sudden, Total could be heard panting a few feet away from her.
"...Dammit...Alexi..." the plant said, trying to catch his breath. "You...can't keep...doing this to me."
"Shush!" Alexi said quickly. "I'm trying to figure something out."
Total looked out at the ocean. "What?"
"Those mermen look like they're mad at someone, and I'm thinking it's the guy on the shore over there." The girl pointed to the guy a slight distance away. "I don't like violence, so I want to see if I can stop it."
"But what about the stories you told me about the guys from S.I.N. who captured you?" Total asked. "About how you beat the crap outta them and how you gave them wedgies and stuck them on the end of your trident, and how you paraded them around for all their colleagues to see, and..."
"That's different,"
Alexi interrupted. "They brought that on themselves."
Just then an idea came to her.
She took a deep breath and...

"HEEEEEEEEEY!!! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY!!!" Alexi yelled out. She ran closer to the crowd. "Anybody hungry? I know a good food joint!!"
Total sighed again. "Always with the running," he said to himself. "And the food."
But those were two of the things he loved about her.

"This is not the time for food, or for deciding who is what species and who is not what species they are or are not!" the prince barked, waving off his friend and the newcomer's attention seeking calls. "This is my first experience with mind-and-body-altering substances, and by the Overseer's hair I am going to use it to its fullest!"

Pulling away from his mate, he launched himself sideways across the beach as far as he could - about half a foot - and then proceeded to roll closer to the terrified zombie at speed, charging across the beach like the wheel of a steamroller. He was obviously oblivious to the fact that the man was cowering away from him as if he had the plague, and that he must have been horrified to see him drawing ever nearer. Shinichi gave a whine as Zain rolled away from him. He couldn’t help but feel a little hurt that the other would dismiss him so easily and roll away, leaving him in the dust. Well, sand is more like it, but he still didn’t like it. Feeling his wings droop sadly, he pushed himself up and started to work his way up to Zain. He resembled a worm wriggling through the sand as he got closer, keeping his distance from Zain so as not to upset him. That was the last thing he wanted to do.

“I know it doesn’t matter… I just don’t want you hurting anyone…” His voice was small as he buried himself in the looser sand they were laying in, trying to be out of the way so he wouldn’t be in the way. Shinichi hoped Zain wasn’t mad at him; he just wanted to make sure he was still able to get back on his good side when he had the chance.

Alexi laughed at the prince's speech.
"That's awesome!" she said. "Psychedelic arts huh? Sounds...very 60s...or rave-like."
Just then she got another idea. Actually two. But it looked like the first of her two ideas would have to wait, as her train of thought was broken by the prince's actions.
She looked over as he began chasing the guy on the shore. His partner, however, didn't seem as eager. He looked sad, as if he'd been hurt. Alexi felt a slight pain in her chest when she looked at his sad face. She wanted to help.
But that would have to wait.

"Hey mister!" she called out after the boy the prince was pursuing. "Teach me the ways of the psychedelic arts too!" She took off running after the two.
Meanwhile, Total stood off to the side in the sand watching the events unfold.

"I don't know whether to join in or be completely alarmed," he muttered, sighing.

((For the record, Alexi has no idea what Zain means by "psychedelic arts". XD))

After having quite a bit of time to observe the two mermen roll around and interact (or one's loving attempt to the other, at least) Imaru had enough time to calm back down to 'Cool Aru' mode. He took a deep breath and relaxed his posture, making his way even closer, until he was standing before the mermen and Alexi.

"Er well, it's not a cigar, I can tell you that much. That thing is actually a pencil. I myself use it to draw in my sketchbook more than I use it to write." He explained, taking the opportunity to pass his eyes over the mermen, secretly taking note of their features. Admittedly they were rather pretty.

Imaru looked at Alexi next, before putting his hand on her shoulder in a friendly manner. "I'm rather certain she knows what a pencil is too, hmm? Haha..." He smiled and looked back at Zain. This wasn't so bad after all. Hopefully.

"Oh, I'm sorry for throwing things at you earlier. I was startled and it's been a really long night and morning for me." It was at that moment Imaru remembered the state of his clothing and person must not be much too pleasant. He tried to pass off subtle movements to fix his hair and straighten his clothes, but his discomfort was pretty obvious. "I'd show you how the pencil works, but I'm afraid I've lost my book."
