i guess that's a pretty good rule of thumb...if they sell underwear, it's highly unlikely that they know good reeds.

Shorty-Nymph
I play clarinet too, and use a size 3 reed. I changed reeds recently and now it sounds really airy...and I don't like it sad

ive been using a 3 for about a year because my bd said its better for high notes, the airy sound goes away when get used to them.

reeds do different things for different people and different mouthpieces. you can't say for sure that someone else will have the same exact results that you did.

I started off Rico 3.5, but now I play on Vandoren, usually 3.5. The hardest I've played on is Vandoren 4.5. And actually, I didn't even know there were other brands of reeds other than Rico and Vandoren. *is feeling newbish* redface

I love vintage 3 and vandoran 2.5 those work the best for me smile rico does not work for me at al

ive been playing on Vandoren reeds for about 3 and a half years now. i use size 3 1/2 reeds because its easier to hit those higher notes on my clarinet (like that 2nd G above the staff and higher ocasionally) than with a rico reed or a reed less than a Vandoren 3. i wear out ricos way too fast. and as some other people have said, if you just switched reed brand or size and you are getting that airy sound, just give it some time. you have to get use to it.

so many clarinets! *dizzy* poor oboes like me feel left out. uhhhh anyway for those who play the oboe, the choise between handmade reeds and storebought ones is a big fat difference. storeboughts are pretty easy to use but have a horrid sound.... handmades, however, play beautifully, but im afraid that their hard to play on... i prefer using handmades myself, but after a week or so its hard for me to play on. for you it may be different though............

I use a Rice 2 1/2... My director says we should use at least Rico Royals, but Ric's work for me and I'm on a budget.

I use a plastic reed for playing clarinet in marching band...which is great for playing loudly and not breaking. It sounds kind of duck-y though. xD

Does anyone have recommendations for brands? And how the sizes compare with normal reeds?

I play Mitchell Lurie reeds hardness 3 1/2 for my clarinet. I love it death. My tone sounds better, and overall I just love it. I think I'll be on a strength of 4 by the end of the year, but you can never be sure. I've also used a Vandoran reed, but I don't like it as much. It sounds the same so to speak, but Mitchell Lurie is more comfortable to play with. It's also easier for me to hit high notes in general, and they flooooow better. ^^
