On the sax? Right now, whatever's easy in pep band. I can't get out the low notes, embarrasingly enough. My teacher says "drop your jaw" and I do, and nothing comes out at all. Any advice from those who actually know how to play sax?

I had a real problem with low notes at first too (I switched from flute to tenor... so you can just imagine the problems there xp ). I hated low notes for a long while until I got the hang of it. My advice is to practice doing long tones with the low notes, and to practice working down to the low notes. That's what I did. Also, if you're using the school's sax... it could just be that. ^^;; I used the school's sax for close to a year, and I had SO much trouble, but when I got my own (new) sax, it was a LOT easier to get out the notes.
It is the school's; that could be part of it, and I'll take your advice. A harder reed might help too, but I though a soft one would be easier to start with.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet... but once you've had sax, there's not goin' back. 3nodding

Amen! I played Piano for a bit...then after I started playing alto, piano automatically turned dull. 3nodding

That happens to a few of my reeds. It takes me a few days to break in new reeds.

Really? It takes one 8 hour marching rehearsal for me to break a reed in. whee

I'm not in marching band. stare

I'm teaching my friend saxophone. XD She's a drummer... never played a wind instrument in her life except for a couple weeks when she was forced to learn french horn by her BD. So it's pretty interesting. ^^ She's mostly learning for our band (we're starting up a rock/swing band), but she might also march it next year if she gets good enough 'cause she HATES marching bass drum. She wants to get an alto though, since I play tenor and she thinks we should play different ones.

Yes.. yes you are teaching my saxophone. And I know TWO scales! But.. yeah. My lip hurts. -_-
By the way.. although the french horn sounds cool and all that.. I never want to play it again. Being forced to learn something takes away all of the fun. I had to learn 4 years ago. Oh.. is it hard to switch from drums to saxophone after 7 years? I'm catching on to it fairly fast, actually. biggrin

I'm teaching your saxophone? How can I teach your saxophone if you don't have one? XDDDD

But yeah, you're catching on pretty fast for someone who only played a wind instrument (and not even a woodwind... a brass) once for three weeks years ago. Really, you're learning about as fast as I did. Granted, you have someone teaching you and I had to teach myself... but I had an advantage, having already played a woodwind. Yay for you! You can play concert Bb and concert Eb! ^^

Tenor Sax here. I like it well enough. Its kinda easy. Its really fun to play. Although, what is not fun, is playing so long that your bottom lip gets cut. That hurts! My section leader uses wax for that. I say hes a puss.

Does anyone here know where you can get free Baritone scores??? I am a Barry player & will like to find out where you can get such scores, preferably jazz ones, as I want to learn new songs, especially jazz pieces!

Hello fellow saxes! 3nodding It's been awhile since I posted in this thread. I had a quick question concerning falls.

-I'm having trouble with them in jazz. I can do scoops and such fine, it's just the falls I'm having problems with. Yes, I know you can finger it, but that's not as much fun. Anyone know anything (tips, tricks, hints) I can do to help with them?

i play alto tenor, and berri, and i'm learning soprano....(it hurts my ears sometimes) whee sweatdrop i usually play tenor in my band, sometimes they drag me into playing alto....i like tenors though...being 5' 10" makes small instruments minuscule

I wish I played the soprano. gonk

I didn't like the soprano that much.

Sure it sounds cool, when played well, it that mellow jazz tone.

But my favorite sax has got to be the Bari sax (It bugs me when people spell it Berry...its Baritone people. not a vine fruit.)

As far as jazz tunes go, the best thing to do is learn to play by ear. Or if you're one of those people that need music, just search up blues, 7ths scales, and other jazzy note runs. Then just play them.
