qualmbeforethestorm You know, I really don't understand that poll. There are definitely more than 4 low brass instruments... Tuba, sousaphone, marching tuba (if all marching versions count), baritone, marching baritone, valve trombone, and slide trombone, and I'm sure I've missed at least one. And isn't it weird how when people switch sections they're always like "low brass is so cool I'm gonna go be new there and not know my fingerings/slide positions and make them sound like crap." In our low brass section we have an ex-trumpet player for a tuba and an ex-percussionist (who happens to be my ex-boyfriend and a total jerk) for a trombone. I guess we're just that cool! Mostly people switch because the low brass needs them more than their old section. Ie, I switched this year (the year all the other low brass members graduates) so I could learn and be covered be all the good guys this year so I can bear the legacy for next year. Also, people switch to low brass because they are considering in taking music as a major and/or career path and desire to learn as many types of instruments and view music from as many stand points as possible (switching helped me understand bass, alternate/lower melodies/harmonies, and rhythm parts so much better). And what better way to learn an instrument that you'll maybe only use in ensemble than IN one? It's a lot of fun, and there are people around you who are always willing to help you.

And how is low brass world everyone? I'm so glad that we're getting more and more people. The foundation of the band continues to grow!
Hmm...lately I've been getting ready for our festival in two weeks...but..for once I am not the only tuba at my school! There is a ..double bass player eek
He has strings!

There's a lot of different trombones. Alto Trombone (would that count as low brass anymore?) Tenor Trombone Bass Trombone Contrbass Trombone Valve Trombone then add the other Low Brass Instruments... Euphonium Baritone (yes there is a difference between Euphoniums and baritones) Marching Baritone Tuba Sousaphone Thats 10 low brass instruments if you count Alto Trombone so yeah you could play over 4.

Hmm, I don't know...as a fellow low wind player, I do have a mutual respect for them..especially bari saxes...they're good guys and gals...but as for being grouped with low brass? I don't know...yeah it tends to annoy me too
But it's all good...we're just all one big happy low wind family whee

Shizankoff I have a question, whry are tenor saxes and barisaxes bass clarinets and bassons consider low brass? thats racist! GO TUBA~ In Middle School, All the los Instruments were grouped together, because there wern't that many, and our parts were the same sometimes. But My teacher would say "Low Voices" when refering to us (trombones, a bassoon, tenor sax, bass clainet sometimes, tuba, and baritone). But know in high school, we have more individual parts and everything, so the directors are more specific.

I'm a tuba and sousaphone player. I've been at it for a few years and I turned out to be not too bad overall, although my practicing habits are... erm... nonexistant? sweatdrop Yeah I'm workin' on that...
Anyway, low brass rocks. Without us, there'd be no band. biggrin
