The Hero Of This Story

User Image
Name: Tahirah
Age: 20
Sex: Female
Sexual Orientation: Demisexual, Heteroromantic
Craft: Runnercraft, Trainer
Rank: Journeyman
Location: High Reaches
Physical Description: A young woman of average height, Tahirah stands at five feet and eight inches tall. She is a bit heavier then one would expect, though not overly overweight. The build of her body has broad shoulders, and she is thicker then some might imagine, mostly from the work she has done on her families farm and with the runners.

Her face is a lovely heart shape, with almond shaped eyes, though her eyes are a bit on the smaller side. When she smiles, it can seem as if her eyes are closed when they are actually open. The color of her eyes is a bright blue. The expression on her face is normally a frown, though that does not mean that she is mean.

Personality: Tahirah has always been a young woman who never sought out ambition, glory, or even a role in leadership. While she would prefer to do things on her own, instead of working with a group, or work in the background, the young woman has this natural drive to her. When put into a group, especially one that does not have an already dominating power, Tahirah raises up and takes the position of leader. It becomes natural to her, even though she has never truly wanted it, she understands that if someone must stand up, it should be someone who isn't driven exclusively by the thirst for power.

The reason Tahirah is able to easily jump into a vacant position of leadership and take control, is because she is observant. She would rather wait and watch how everything plays out first, before jumping into an action. She is always watching everything and everyone one around her, making mental notes in her mind. This kind of observation has made her figure out a couple of things that were not supposed to be known. She has learned that, when people think others are not paying attention, they let their guard down, and there are a lot of times when people are normally not observing their surroundings as much as they should be.

From an early age, Tahirah found she had a gift with words, or perhaps it was her charm or charisma. No matter the subject, or the person, she can easily argue a point and even convince someone to join her side. It helps that she always takes notice of things around her, as well as has a thirst for knowing anything about a subject that interests her. She is also able to make herself into what she believes that person wishes to see her as. Of course, this is not always benevolent. Tahirah uses that persuasive charm of hers, as well as her observation, to manipulate and use people to get what she wants. While she knows it isn't the nicest thing to do, she doesn't see any harm in delegating more chores to others, especially if they were skipping out or slacking off to go and have some fun. As of right now, Tahirah just manipulates those to make things a bit easier for herself, though there is the possibility that Tahirah could use it for more then that.

You would think, with how persuasive, as well as how easily she can slip into a leadership role, Tahirah has confidence to spare, and yet what everyone normally sees is a mask. Tahirah suffers heavily from anxiety, especially social anxiety. Being raised on a farm outside of Keeron Hold, learning how to raise and train runners, didn't really help to get her use to the hustle and bustle of a Hold or Weyr. She was a very shy child, until she realized that she could wear a 'mask' and make herself into what someone expected her to act like or be, which would make them happy and like her. It helped to easy some of that anxiety, but it is always there nagging and pulling in the back of her mind. She does her best to keep from suffering from anxiety attacks. They were worse when she first came to the weyr a turn ago. Large crowds, especially when she cannot move without bumping into another person, cause her anxiety. She also fears heavily about disappointing anyone, especially if they have shown any type of interest in helping her through her future.

With her anxiety, a way that Tahirah found to cope was to think that nothing would ever go right. Whenever there is a chance of something good happening to her, Tahirah focuses on the bad, as well as what could go wrong. She doesn't see the glass as half full, instead the glass is always half empty, it is always going to rain, and no matter what you will die. It can make her seem to be a bit of a downer, never getting her hopes up about anything.
Positive Trait List Leaderly, Observant, Persuasive
Negative Trait List Manipulative, Anxious, Pessimistic

History: Born to a Master Runnercraft, who specialized in breeding and training, Tahirah was the first born to the man and his wife. She grew up wild, always running through the fields of their home, dodging this way and that as her mother tried to constantly keep her appearance fresh in some way. There was never a moment that Tahirah was seen without a skinned knee, or dirt on her face, her light brown hair tangled and wild.

Her father found his wild daughter amusing, and began to get her to help him with the runners. When she was three turns old, Tahirah became an older sibling to a baby sister. She was glad that the baby came along because with her sister, her mother finally got the daughter she could doll up and teach her own tailorcraft too. It gave Tahirah more time to be with her father and the Runners. She began to spend more and more time with them then the other children, enjoying their company then that of the other kids, though she did manage to have a few close friends.

As she grew, Tahirah officially began to apprentice underneath her father, and when the time came, at the age of seventeen, she walked the tables and became a journeyman. There was time for celebration within the family and then it was back to work, though Tahirah couldn't help but feel a nagging feeling in the back of her mind.

A turn later, that nagging feeling came to fruition. Thread returned. Her family had managed to stay safe, though many of the Runners perished, all thanks to the fact that High Reaches had not allowed themselves to grow lax like the other weyrs. There was a thankful feeling to Tahirah as she watched the dragonriders return to fight Thread, but she was unable to focus on it for long as, once more, it was back to work.

A turn after Thread returned, a dragon and its rider landed in one of their fields, spooking the runner. Her sister rushed out, curious to see the dragon up close, while Tahirah stayed back a bit, fascinated by the creature and yet, there was that nagging feeling once more, that something wasn't right. The brown paid some attention to her sister and then moved over to her, all while the rider spoke to her father. It was amusing how quickly she had a large dragon's head right in right of her, and then was nudged by the brown, the rider chuckling as he came over. "He seems to think you have what it takes to be a candidate." Tahirah didn't say anything, just listened to the rider speak to her parents, as well as her, saying that she didn't have to make a choice now, he would be back in the area in two seven days, and even then she did not have to come.

Tahirah wasn't planning on going to the Weyr. While, yes the idea of being a dragonrider was romantic and cool, the thought of leaving her home where she felt safe, the runners, her friends....it scared her. It took her father telling her that, even if she stood as a candidate, she may not impress, that she could return once she aged out, to finally convince Tahirah to give it a try. So, when the rider and brown returned, Tahirah had some of her closest possessions with her, ready to go. She promised her family she would write to them, that she would stay safe, and try to visit when she could, and then she was gone.

Becoming a candidate wasn't strange to her, the work and labor was something she had been use to. What she wasn't used to was the crowds. There were many times that Tahirah suffered anxiety attacks, having to move into less populated areas for a few moments to regain her composure. She enjoyed doing any chores where she helped with the runners, it always helped to ground her.

After she had written home about the crowds, wondering if she should come back home because of her anxiety, Tahirah was sent a firelizard egg by her parents. A lovely and beautiful blue hatched from it. Wedjet has become a bit of a comfort companion to Tahirah, always appearing and draping himself across her shoulders when she begins to feel anxious.

A turn has passed since she first came to High Reaches and Tahirah continues to stand, not thinking she is going to ever impress a dragon, but also not believing she will end up being able to go home either. It's a fine line she is walking, trying to keep her anxiety in check and make friends with some of her fellow candidates.

Here There Be Dragons

Brown Taoloth
Written by Uta

Origin of Name: Taoloth's name is inspired by the Sesotho language. This African language has a word for "control" which is taolo, from which this dragon's name is derived.

Inspiration: Imperio.

The Imperius Curse (Imperio) is a tool of the Dark Arts, and is one of the three Unforgivable Curses. It is one of the most powerful and sinister spells known to wizardkind. When cast successfully, the curse places the victim completely under the caster's control, though a person with exceptional strength of will is capable of resisting it.

The fact that the curse can be defended against makes it unique amongst the Unforgivable Curses. Additionally, unlike the other Unforgivables, being subjected to the Imperius Curse — when adequately cast — is not an unpleasant experience. The victim of an Imperius Curse is placed in a calm, trance-like state in which all feeling of responsibility and anxiety is banished.

After the first Wizarding War, many Death Eaters, such as Lucius Malfoy, Corban Yaxley, Walden Macnair, Amycus and Alecto Carrow, claimed that they had served under Lord Voldemort only because of the Imperius Curse. While their claims were accepted, the Ministry assigned several personnel to determine who was truly under the curse and who was lying to escape punishment. However, they were not perfect in capturing deception. Malfoy, Macnair, and several others still eluded justice under the cover of the lie.

Personality: Oh, look at this precious little brown! So small, so delicate, so adorable. Yes, that's exactly what Taoloth wants you to think! He isn't a threat, he isn't an enemy, he is just the sweetest, cutest, most precious little beast. And yet, behind that sweet, small, soft, exterior is a dragon who knows exactly what he wants, and exactly how to get it!

Manipulative perhaps sums this brown up best. Taoloth is the sort of dragon who will do whatever he has to do to ensure he gets what he wants. In some cases, that means buttering someone up, and then looking at them with bright purple-green eyes in hopes that they'll help him with this task; or maybe, as he's older, he just needs to swish his tail just like so, and do a little heavy-flirting. Honestly, Taoloth is the sort of dragon who seems to so genuine and sweet, that unless you really get to know him (or look at his circle of friends) you won't see that you're being played like a fiddle until it's well too late. His rider is well aware of his brown's desire to be the dragon in charge, and to pull all the strings; whether or not that's tolerated, or clamped down, depends entirely upon his rider!

When Taoloth says to jump, you do so willingly, and in many cases, before you realize what exactly you're doing. Oh, this brown doesn't always get his way. Those with strong enough will-power might well see him for what he truly is -- a great deceiver -- but the honey that comes from him is so sweet that many have difficulty seeing him for the trouble he actually is! When Taoloth wants something, he will get it.... even if it takes Turns.

Yes, this dragon is patient. Often, this is a good train. It means he has no trouble dealing with clutchmates who don't quite grasp concepts as quickly as he does; or that he can wait as long as he needs to ensure a situation goes the way he envisions it. Not everything happens swiftly, after all. His patience is a balm in case his rider is ever lacking any, and it well can be use for good.

Unfortunately, Taoloth is the sort of brown who just wants to be in charge. Part of him regrets he was not born a gold, or even a bronze, but he will work with what he was given without complaint. While he likes the idea of power, as he grows he will come to realize that he is not the sort who wants to be in charge in the obvious ways; no, he wants to pull the strings. He will strive to become a Wingsecon or Wingleader, but would prefer to befriend the Weyrleader than to usurp the role. He is clever, and smart, and can change the world with his forked tongue as opposed to bulk size and direct commands.

He is a ernest creature, though, and a hard worker. If his rider can keep him in line, which might always be a bit of a fight, he can be relied upon to follow duties and tasks assigned to him. He likes to see plans come together, and certainly is the sort of brown who doesn't hesitate to take charge of any situation that has room for him to maneuver. Even against larger dragons, or metallics, Taoloth is a brown who likes to have control in everything. And if he can't get it...well, just wait. He will.

Positive Traits: Disciplined, Patient, Ernest
Negative Traits: Controlling, Deceitful, Manipulative

Adult Size: 30'
Physical Attributes: Though he is small for a brown, he is sleek, and less bulky than some of his siblings. That doesn't mean he doesn't know how to throw his weight around! Besides, his delicate size can only better get him to manipulate him into giving him what he needs; a flick of a tail here, a limp there, or whatever else he needs to do to get him what he wants!

He is particularly graceful for a brown, and knows how to work with what he's been given!

Additional Notes: Taoloth might seem small and delicate, but rest assured, he's the one in charge. No matter who he winds up chasing, this dragon is definitely the one who is going to be in charge! He doesn't seem to have a preference for male or female, so long as he's the one giving the orders.

Theme Song: Control by Halcey
Egg: Imperio Egg: This medium large purple and yellow egg leans back against two of its siblings. Those who pass by it may feel rather drawn to it.

Why Me? Tahirah is the sort of woman Taoloth understands. Her manipulative nature sang to his hearts, and, in a way, he knows that she will see through his deception with ease. She is one of the few who will see him for what he truly is, and that is something he can respect. Her drive for leadership also calls to him; surely, she will help bring him closer to the control he craves, and perhaps, one day, they will both get what they seek. She needs a strong dragon to get her to the top, and he needs someone who won't hold them back.

Taoloth isn't a terrible creature, though. He will chase away her anxieties when they surface, and remind her that she has nothing to fear with him by her side. His love for her is true. Furthermore, the woman has enough willpower that she will be able to keep Taoloth in line when his need for control flares. Their relationship may not be one of tenderness, but it is one of mutual respect and understanding.

Grid: Illness Grid
Quote:
You wind up getting miserably ill. You have a high-fever that puts you well in the infirmary. If you're a dragonrider, your dragon is likely going to get very upset! If you've a weyrling, they're going to be in a miserable state of worry and distress! You don't know what you've got but it puts you out for a good two to three sevendays. Fever, chills, aches, pains; you have no appetite and likely wind up dropping some weight from the sickness. Any loved ones or family are likely quite worried.
