But caaaaan I get a flavorful description of visible injuries? Obviously not now, but laaater? For the funsies?


This ghost's apparent death was by having his throat cut. The wound, ethereal as it may be, does not look "jagged" or anything like having a dagger forcefully dragged across it. It seems like a simple clean cut, as if from a single swing of a katana.

"I don't know," Michiko responded, annoyance in her voice as they walked south along the road.

"Well, the Crane probably knew about that ghost, yeah? They must've. I hope Chiharu-san's gonna be okay!"


I just have to mention how much I enjoyed this ^
I <3 NPCs (enemies or allies, it doesn't matter) it is always fun to know what is going on about them.

PROPOSED HOUSE RULE

Lore: Theology

Once per day, you may spend 15 minutes in prayer and attempt a TN 20 Awareness/Lore: Theology roll to pray to one of the Seven Fortunes to earn their blessing, adding +1 to the totals of the following rolls for the remainder of the day:
Benten: +1 to all contested Social skill rolls
Bishamon: +1 to all Weapon skill rolls
Daikoku: +1 to all non-craft Merchant skill rolls
Ebisu: +1 to all Craft and Artisan skill rolls
Fukurokujin: +1 to all Lore skill rolls
Hotei: +1 to all Void-based rolls
Jurojin: +1 to all Earth-based rolls

If you have the Seven Fortunes' Blessing advantage, you get a free raise on your roll when praying to that Fortune. If you have the Seven Fortunes' Curse disadvantage, you cannot make a roll to pray to that Fortune for a blessing.

Mastery Abilities
Rank 3: The bonus to the above rolls increases to +2.
Rank 5: You may make 1 more attempt to pray to the Fortunes the same day.
Rank 7: The bonus to the above rolls increases to +3.


Thoughts? I need majority approval between both campaigns before I add it to the house rules. If you think it should be tweaked, please feel free to give me suggestions.

The Unicorn are more "We have our own customs. Don't like 'em? You can go frack yourself." The Crab are more "Go frack yourself."

A slight distinction, but a distinction nonetheless.

If you can get the other players to post more frequently, then you can have the same XP level as the other players (56 total). I've been sitting on what XP you'd start at for a while; either from "scratch" at 50, half of what they've earned, or the full amount. What I decided on is if a new player/character starts in a new province, they'll start at the XP level everyone else was at at the start of the province. So Province 2 will be starting at 66 xp, since there are 16 regions to explore in this one.

You start with the Tetsubo emphasis in Heavy Weapons automatically as part of the school.

Also, you need to choose your Heavy Weapon in your starting equipment. I'm usually good handwaiving the Hida Bushi heavy weapons emphasis to match, as long as no one is bothered by it.

Katana is 3k2 damage, plus +Strength k0 dice. So Strength 3 = 6k2 damage. Note that it will be +5k0 for heavy weapons (Rank 1 school + Large + Strength).

17 points on skills + 24 points on traits + 3 advantages - 10 disadvantages = 34/56 points spent.

Looking more spot-on.

Question: Why have those 10 points in disadvantages? With NO disadvantages, you are at the points you needed, and you aren't spending the points you get back for it. Why not forgo them altogether?

Also, -1k1 and +5 TN to all social rolls is really, really crippling. Are you sure about that? Trust me, Awareness 2 and 0 ranks in social skills is plenty limiting.

EDIT: Something else we need to talk about: How aware are you of the story for this particular game? Do you know exactly what's going on or do you need a recap/explanation? And once that's settled, we'll need to figure out how to write you into the story. If you're adamant about having those social penalties, it'll be pretty hard to convince the party to let you join up if you just walked out of the bushes.

I was going to keep the 10 disadvantage points; being only 2 points from gaining a 3 to Agility (goal seeing getting my attack rolls to be #k3, making actually hitting something a better possibility). And I was hoping they would help me think of a backstory. They didn't help with a story.

I think I could also drop my skills to 1 and start with the end goal instead... I will do that one, then there is no planned need for those disadvantage points.

Other than everyone else's backstory, let's assume a recap would favorable... sweatdrop In hindsight, it may have been better if I started there first. gonk

Well, if you're friends with your courtier PC, forgoing social competency can work out (a co-dependency dynamic that I quite enjoy in L5R, between yojimbo/duelist and courtier/shugenja). Most of the time. At least when you're not separated or haven't used that antisocial-ness to start a fight with the party.

Iiii have player hooks for Lions, not so much for Crab. A gruff antisocial Hida seems like someone that would spend his life on the wall. You coooould replace one of those disadvantages with an Obligation (or spend xp for an Ally) to a Yasuki who's pulling resources and connections to curry favor with the Miya to perhaps ensure the next Emperor's Blessing goes to Crab lands. Or something along those lines.

48 on traits, 2 on skills, 3 on advantages, -6 on disadvantages.

Normally I'm not comfortable with players "keeping" some of their initial xp unspent (since it's supposed to be everything you've learned up to when you started your adventure!), though I'm more lenient about earned XP. The 6xp you're leeching off the others can be banked. If you want it easy peasy, you could always just make Heavy Weapons rank 3 and you'll be at 50. Or a couple rank 1 skills to round out your resumé.

(Also, I didn't want to tell you about taking Agility 3, I was willing to let you learn the hard way ninja I'm happy you decided on it).

In fact, I can even justify your disadvantages being the reason you were here. You were sent on an errand by your lord. Someone gave you bad directions (possibly on purpose) and now you're fracking lost. When did you even ENTER Crane lands?!

And hey, there's an imperial. A Miya no less. They're basically the USPS of Rokugan anyways, so she probably knows where she's going. If you follow her around long enough, you're bound to find your way back home!
