Marisol managed to swat down another of the blasted birds, whip cracking down its back, as she moved towards the hole. If she could get a break in the wave of attacks, she could try to shove a nearby bookcase over it. Until then, she continued whacking at the creatures.

    Marisol's Weapon: Whip (4 Base; +1 Hit)
    Damage Dealt: (100% x 4) = 4 DMG

How much longer would it be before they were able to get those speakers started? They seemed to be holding up alright, but Zebulon was starting to notice that the hotel's walls did seem a little weaker.

At the very least, more cracks were forming. Zebulon propped up one of his remaining frame pieces against a crack that was low on the wall to help block any drafts.

The sound of battle is harsh and chaotic: people shouting to one another and metal clanging against metal. The birds don't cry out but are oddly silent, and something about their silence makes the experience more surreal, more uncomfortable.

The first chords of music break through it, cut through the sounds like a knife. There is one rippling guitar riff, coming down from the mountain, that screams and makes the birds waver and sway, overwhelmed.

Then the song begins in earnest.

The Chosen will see the effect it has on the birds. Their flight turns erratic, their fight forgotten in favor of trying to hold themselves aloft. Assaults on the building are abandoned as drums pound and the birds tumble into the snow like stones. It is clear that Brynn and Diana's plan, finally now put into effect, is very effective.

The battle is over in a heartbeat, and a rippling sound of victory starts below the music. Then another sound fills the air: this one like running water or like pounding feet or some mix of the two. It starts low and builds slowly, as snow slips free of the face of the mountain and streams like a rush down toward the lodge below.

The speakers cut out when it's about halfway down, connections broken and sound smothered by heavy powder. Everyone knows when it reaches the bottom, snow drifting up into the air, visible in low twilight through gaps in the boarded-and-reinforced windows.

Snow, somehow driven off course, strikes the hotel with force enough to shake it in its foundations, and piles up along the far side. But their fortifications, their efforts at defense, were enough to keep it from knocking the building down. Had they gone out searching for missing civilians, perhaps it [combined with the attack from the birds] would have destroyed the hotel. They will never know.

All they do know is that now snow is piled up ten or twelve feet on one side of the hotel, leaning against its frame. Inside, they have saved roughly 50 civilians, all said and done, and it seems they have won the fight.

All is calm. They can tend to licked wounds while Brynn and some of the others try to figure out just how much success they've had, and if the fight is really at an end.

OOC: We are now at a lull! All the birds have fallen from the sky; for now, you are left to your own devices, to simply RP out some aftemath.

Around 7PM EST, we will be posting the final stage of our finale!

For the curious, the final HP of the hotel was 112.

The sudden silence was unnerving and Misha stood, frozen in place for long moments as it settled over her. Then, quite suddenly, she dropped her buckler and spun to wrap her arms around Beth in a tight, fierce hug. Everything was contained in the impulsive movement - fear and relief and exhaustion and joy and something Misha could not even begin to classify "We... Holy crow, we did it. We're still alive." Her voice was hushed and almost reverent.

Then she laughed, bright and warm and cascading, and delivered a noisy kiss to Beth's cheek. She still wasn't 100% sure of the other woman's name but, damn, if she didn't find herself fond of her. Misha supposed that stupid Speed movie had it right. Bonds formed in high stress situations and all that...

As she untangled herself from Beth, though, another thought hit her and she remembered the others who had helped her... and those who had not wanted to stay in the hotel in the first place. She bit her lip, took one final glance at Beth, and ran from the room. A new goal caught her mind.

Taking a corner quickly, Misha found herself into the last place she had been. When she spotted Brian, there was no hesitation and she flung herself at him, wrapping her arms around his waist in a hug just as tight as the one Beth had received. Her cheek pressed against his chest but she didn't say a word.

She remembered his vote and the anger wafting from him earlier.

Brian startled with the sudden inception of a foreign guitar riff. Of course he realized in moments what he was hearing; first, the Prytaneum's answer to the birds and, second, Slayer. He wasn't sure why, but he had been expecting something more classical. Maybe it was just the nature of the place. He let out a soft laugh and looked up, watching the birds wheel and collapse. Huh. Imagine that. So the legends help merit here...but of course they did. Nothing meshed with old-school "reality" any more. Everything had changed.

Then came the whoosh of snow letting go, the cracking of trees falling. The joy fled from his face. How many people were still out there? How many of them had been lucky enough to be killed by the force of the avalanche, and avoided being suffocated, starved, or crushed to death? He had never been a religious man, but he felt the urge to pray.

Instead, Misha came running into the room and wrapped her arms around him. He hadn't been expecting that at all, and so stood in shock for a moment when she thudded against his chest. It didn't take long for him to recover, though, and in a moment he had wrapped his arms around her and held her close. She remembered. She had been there. He was absolutely gobsmacked and remarkably touched that she cared.

When the sorrowful swell had become a shallow thrumming he could ignore, Brian pulled out of the hug and smiled down at Misha.

"Is that… Slayer?"

As the scrabbling against the outer wall stopped, Rob went to the window and looked out. Birds were falling out of the sky. "Yeah!" he crowed. Then the music abruptly stopped. The sudden silence was followed by a low rumble that increased to the point it was shaking the hotel.

Suddenly it was all over. Rob stood for a moment, letting it sink in, afraid the clawing sounds would start again or a bird would fly around the corner and attack with razor-sharp feathers and bronze beaks. When nothing happened, he finally stopped holding his breath. It was really over.

With a loud whoop, Rob let the greatsword clatter to the floor. "We did it! We beat those bloody birds! The speakers worked!" He leapt into the air, then went to Sid and pulled her into a tight embrace. "It's over, Sid," he said into her rainbow hair.

Her luck was just nonexistent at this point. She'd unstrung her bow, hoping to be of more use trying to fortify the hotel against the attack, seeing as her hands kept shaking and she just... couldn't land a hit. But before she'd even been able to do anything there... Music began to play.

Wasn't sweet, or haunting. It was hard, head banging, and nothing like her usual tastes. But it didn't bring her to the ground like it did the birds. They swooped and fought gravity, faltering in the air in time with the guitar and drums, before their metal frames plummeted. She smiled briefly. Delighted that the plan worked. Delighted the fight was over, far as she could tell.

Didn't last long. The horrific growing sound turned her blood to ice, stomach filling with lead as it built, louder and louder. Trees snapped, the speakers cut out. Her eyes shut tight, hands pressed to her mouth in horror of knowing people must be either dying from the impact of the snow--the same snow that shook the very hotel they were in--or would be forced to succumb to slow, agonizing deaths within the heavy powder.

She didn't even try to stop the tears. Her excitement over beating the birds was gone in the instant she'd registered the sound of the avalanche. Yes, the people in the hotel were safe. Yes, that was a triumph. No, she hadn't anticipated the snow would reach the hotel--and was, dimly, aware that that additional damage might have spelt the end of the building had they not been there. But her heart broke for the people whose loved ones they hadn't found, for the people who were condemned among the bleak white.

When the tears slowed, she wiped them away much as she could, shouldering her bow and moving rather quietly through the hotel. It took a little bit before she found Rob and Sid, there in one of the rooms on the upper floor, but her relief at seeing them in solid piece enabled her to give a tiny smile. Eyes red-rimmed and a bit glassy, she moved a little towards them, but didn't speak up, unsure if she was intruding. They were all safe, at least. It was as much as she could ask for.

Suddenly, music rose and Sidney paused, perking up to hear it. It rippled out over the snowy landscape in a driving, pulsing rhythm and with it, her spirits and determination rose. Music always had a way of touching her... and this was music for battle, music that would destroy the monsters... Needless to say, she was on a bit of a high when the snow came crashing down and not even that was enough to knock her down again.

She whooped and cheered with the rest, throwing her arms into the air with her bow clutched in one hand.

"We did it!" She squealed as she danced about. Catching Rob headed for her, she threw herself happily at him and let him catch her up in a tight hug. Laughter rippled from her as she hugged him back, but it wasn't enough to satisfy the buzzing energy inside of her.

Her thin hands gripped him by the hair and she pulled his head back so she could plant a fierce kiss on his lips, humming happily. It didn't matter where they were, or what people might see. The thrill of victory was sweet and needed to be shared.

Misha's enthusiastic hug was greeted by Beth's own joyful embrace. It was over. It was fby theinally over. She giggled loudly and clung tight to the other woman. "We're alive, we're alive!" She chanted, ignoring anything that might put a damper on her relief. She blushed a bit as Misha kissed her cheek, awkwardly trying to reciprocate--it was the woman's way, apparently, so best to mirror it--but only met air. Beth was on Misha's heels, intent on confirming that the friends she had made in this crisis were safe. It seemed like Misha had the same idea as she ran to Brian and threw herself into his arms. Beth followed close behind, wrapping her arms around them both. It didn't matter to her that she got a chest full of elbow. She was just relieved to find Brian safe, especially as it was not his choice to stay. "Thank you," she whispered fiercely, holding tightly to them even as she shuddered with relief.

Misha smiled back at him, grey eyes searching his face. Judging by the strength of his returned hug, she had been right; he needed that distraction and comfort. She could only imagine how the sound of the avalanche had hit the psyches of those who had wanted to save civilians. Personally, she was avoiding the thought. It made her sick to her stomach and she was determined not to cry. Certainly not in front of anyone else.

"Hey," she murmured and something like a mildly teasing light appeared in her gaze. She stretched an arm upwards to touch his cheek in a half-sweet, half-mischievous gesture. "Glad to see you're in one piece, handsome."

Brian chuckled at Beth's appearance. He heard someone crying. He had to look down to check and make sure it wasn't Misha or Beth. He released one arm from his raven-haired hugger and reached up to touch Beth's shoulder.

"Of course," he replied, then his gaze shifted. He watched the pile of birds on the ground. They could move. He's seen too much s**t to think that this was all over. Still, though, a break was nice. Some time to try and mentally and physically recover.

Misha reached up and he smiled to her again.

"The same to you," he replied. Somehow calling Misha "gorgeous" in return seemed inappropriate. He had probably aggravated some of his wounds, but they were all pretty scratched and bruised.

Rob suddenly felt fingers in his dreadlocked hair pulling his head back. Before he could protest, Sid was kissing him, fiercely and with the passion of someone who had survived a fight for their life. The surprise wore off quickly and he returned the kiss just as fiercely. His body thrilled with her energy and he embraced his childhood friend tightly as their mouths sought each other out.

Then he heard a slight shuffling/sniffling sound in the room. Breaking off the kiss and raising his head, he saw Tara looking at him and Sid, her bright blue eyes red-rimmed and filled with tears and her expression unreadable save for a small smile. She had made it too.

With a warm smile of his own he spared one of his arms around Sid and reached out toward Tara. "Come here, you." he nearly laughed, holding out a hand for her.

Cat paused in her pursuit of the bird as a tremble of bass rolled down the mountain and fierce music roared. It was eerie seeing the birds suddenly plummet and thrash about before succumbing to the music- a harsh song she wouldn’t normally listen to, but was uplifting in their battle against the monstrous terrors. She sank to her knees in relief, tears welling to her eyes with the sheer stress of the whole situation as the danger seemed to recede.

It wasn’t until the shudder of snow breaking free of its place on the mountains that her instincts kicked in and she scrambled to her feet. A tingling jolt shot down her spine as every primal part of her brain told her this was wrong, something dangerous was coming. She rushed from the back of the hotel to look for anyone she recognized, losing her balance as the avalanche shook the hotel and she careened into the wall beside her. She leaned against it, shaking, as it sunk in that their decision to stay meant people out there were just lost to the avalanche. New tears pricked her eyes as she thought of the loss of life, but she sniffed and wiped her nose on her sleeve as she made her way towards the lobby, taking some solace in recognizing the lives they had managed to save. She was sure after this assault that the birds combined with the avalanche likely would have led to an even greater loss of life.

She entered the front of the hotel, shaking and pale as a ghost, torn between utter relief and complete sorrow, as pink and puffy eyes scanned the crowd for a familiar face.

Diryas had gotten so into the zone of fighting back the birds that he was honestly startled at the sudden loud part, having not heard the earlier part of it. His whip strike went wide, and he swore venomously under his breath. Whirling around, it took a second for him to comprehend what he was seeing. Standing in one place, breathing hard, he watched with a savage sense of victory as the birds tumbled into the snow. Even the ensuing sound of avalanche wasn't enough to dampen it.

"Zebulon!" With volume unusually high for someone that usually spoke as seldom as possible, Diryas began the effort to find his husband in the crowd.

Beth nodded in acceptance of Brian being in one piece, and, more importantly, not angry with her. With one last squeeze, she started off. She ran into Briiva in the hallway and giddily squeezed her hands as she briefly paused by the other Chosen. Then she went flying down the stairs, calling out, "Cat! Cat, where are you!"
