Jack had changed earlier, dumping the stained clothes for something more casual. In a way, not having to wear the uniform on this mission was liberating, even if it didn't change their purpose. It was going to be chilly, so he could at least hide his tunics beneath his coat again, at least to the best of his ability.
He was tying his hair back (not lazily this time) when she emerged, and his hands continued to work even as he looked at her. It was strange, looking at where the scars were hiding.
"Good work," he complimented, even though in the end he doubted they needed to worry about blending in with night crowds. The effort felt like it necessitated some acknowledgment. "Although the weather disagrees," he added, indicating the window. It was misting outside with no sign of stopping, only hinting at more to come.

She stared at him incredulously. "What you take me for, some b***h without waterproof mascara?" She moved to take one of her bobby pins from her belt and slid behind Jack, pulling his shoulder down (damn giant) so she could tuck back a piece of hair he'd missed. The struggle of hair that was neither too long or too short.
"b***h please." And they were off.

They required no additional light while traipsing through the city, but the further out they went, the darker it became as the streetlamps were left behind. Jack had heard of artifacts that allowed people to see in the dark; he considered researching once they got back. By the light of their runes and the screen of the scanner, they walked several miles south of Athens to the abandoned Ellinikon International Airport. Something made the readings spike as they approached, but he wasn't able to determine what had happened--what he did understand, however, was that they were in the vicinity of not one but two Fear-based individuals, which he shared with Chel in a low murmur as they picked through broken fences and strewn debris.
The skeleton of the airport seemed to groan around them. The mist pervaded in the interior though not quite as thick as it did outside, and they had to watch their step lest they crush trash noisily and alert whatever was waiting for them. Past a corridor that looked perfectly tailored for a horror movie, they could hear two muffled voices conversing. The corridor opened to another hall that lead into an open space that, judging from the broken down yellow sign reading AREA A in Greek and English, was probably where a multitude of gates had been. There was no additional light beyond what slivers of the moon made it through the clouds.
Jack stopped them before they went further and touched Chel's arm. "How do you want to play this?" he whispered. This was his mission, but Chel was the one who had more experience controlling the flow of battle.

Chel hated this place. It was dark and it was decrepit. The list of things that scared Chel was slowly growing, and broken darkness like this was one of the added. It was too black, too cracked, too much like a dream where the sky shattered and her skull split and-
< He is asking you a question and you have missed it. >
The touch to her arm startled her and she instinctively curled her fingers in his shirt, ready to lash out, snap-
She shook her head, looking at him with a mollified expression. "Sorry, what?" The hand relented, rubbing her own arm awkwardly. "Nightmares," was her explanation.

His eyes widened a little when he thought she would attack, and his grip tensed for a moment, ready to push her back. It was hard to make out her expression, but her explanation was enough.
"I can hear two," he said, slackening his grip but not letting go. "Means either the little s**t was lying, or someone else is paying the thing a visit. How do you want to play this?" His other hand slipped under his coat and pulled it back enough to reveal the runic torch. "I've got this if you need extra firepower."

She didn't say it, but she appreciated the hand on her arm. Her fingers reached up to lightly brush his hand before thinking somewhat more seriously about the situation.
Whatever had momentarily taken Chel dissolved. "Keep the torch for you. Harder y'can hit, the better." Better to put all the eggs in one basket; speaking of which: "Go for the war first. We'll both attack it. S'already hurtin' from earlier. Kick it while it's down-" As it had done to her earlier, "-Then we can double back on the other."
The hand fell from his to her second dagger, who's glow bounced off the columns and illuminated the foreign letters on broken signs and crushed pamphlets. "Don't be 'fraid to pendant out neither. We already got what we came for."
But her expression and the grip on her daggers said like hell I'm leavin'.

He'd thought as much but was glad to see they were on the same page, though it was clear even in the dark that he was going to avoid pendating out if he could. Whether he commented on it or not, Chel had a nasty habit of thinking she could take on everything herself--that, and frankly he thought himself the more likely to hit harder at this point.
He really ******** wanted that bracelet off her.
"After you," Jack said as he summoned his weapon.

Jack didn't have to worry about hitting multiples harder than she did, considering she completely missed her initial attack. After being whacked by Jack's sword, the war horseman was a bit wiser to the surprise and flew backwards before Chel could get a swipe in.

—Straight into Jack's sword. For a moment he thought he had pierced through its wing, but the horseman had a strong enough barrier still; blood spilled as it hissed a curse in a language he didn't understand.
With both horsemen alerted to their presence, the darkness seemed to grow deeper. Worse, it seemed to move. Hundreds of tiny little legs crawled from beneath the Famine in the form of shadowy bugs, its eyes literally gleaming in what little light was available.

Jack had at least been right about Chel's tendency to throw herself into the fray. Despite the plan being to focus on the war horseman, she still threw a purposefully missed slice at the famine horseman, diverting its attention from Jack.
Then she swung upwards with her second dagger. Both horseman had cornered her, but that left Jack the perfect window to cull the war horseman. It was a risky plan, but still a plan.

It was telling that even this early in the battle they had a sync established. When Jack wasn't busy letting revenge take him over and Chel wasn't trying to take on too much at once, they could accomplish things quickly. The moment the war horseman turned its back to focus on her, remembering that the hunter had shown weakness before and was a softer target to finish off, Jack maneuvered himself around it, surged forward, grabbed the base of one of its wings to anchor himself and give him a better idea of where he was about to strike in the dark, and sheathed his sword where approximated there was space between its ribs. Gurgling, it fell forward as the weapon broke through to the other side, short sword disappearing as it collapsed into a pool of its own blood. A meteor hammer came swinging hard from the side and nearly knocked him over the body, but the deed was done.
One down.

Chel had already turned to face the famine horseman, full faith in Jack's ability to kill it, and even more confident in the noise that followed shortly after.
The famine horseman was harder to approach. She hadn't had time to get used to it's battle tactics, it wasn't dying and it didn't even seem to have a solid form. She lunged forward, dagger first to strike the darkness, but that had been a bad decision.
It was a bad decision because as soon as she moved closer, the darkness surrounded her and she couldn't see the sky and she was afraid that the next words she would hear would be Chris was it?

Unlike the war one, this horseman seemed to blend into the darkness of the abandoned airport. As it slunk into a different corner of the room, Jack lunged after, fueled by the high of knocking one out--and struck the concrete. Bugs were crushed underneath, but in seconds waves replaced them, crawling up his sword, his legs, biting and burrowing under his clothes.
He flashed back to Nest's caverns and made a strangled noise as he fought to get them off. From somewhere to his left was the sound of rattling laughter, like dry bones tapping.

With the famine horseman momentarily focused on Jack, Chel ripped her pocket open and pulled out a smoke grenade, which she then lit and tossed at Jack's feet. Certainly smoke wasn't going to break his stupor, but Chel knew from Uttam that famine bugs were particularly sensitive to smoke, much like mosquitoes at a campfire. It didn't kill them, which sucked, but it made them docile, inebriated.
"Heads up," she called, completely aware that he could see the bomb coming, but more so to give him an audio cue to wake up from what was taking him away.
Then she turned her attentions back to the famine horseman, who had now turned back towards her. It scared her and the threat of Merlin shivered down her spine, but she plunged into the bleak nothingness, intending to stab it out of her way.
