Julian was thrown off Sin, the blow hurting him just as bad as most of her attacks had. He ended up lying flat on his face, his wings spread out like a broken bird. There wasn't much left him him, he was quickly losing hope that he would make it to the end of this fight. But that wasn't what was important. Surviving wasn't what was important. Protecting and saving his friends was the only thing that mattered. In that moment he didn't think of any of the other consequences, all he thought of was doing as much as he could for as long as he could.
Anything to help his friends.

He got up, as quickly as he could (Which wasn't terribly fast, but eh). Something had changed in him, he didn't stand the same way anymore. His eyes... the pupils were gone, all that was left were huge golden irises surrounded by inky black sclera. And, despite everything he had taken, despite all the pain, the agony, the sorrow, he stood with a warrior's stance, ready to fight until the bitter end.

"I will not let whoever made this world take my friends away from me. I won't!" He might have laughed at Belladonna's words if he hadn't been lost in his own emotions.
He was weak, but not that weak and he launched himself into the air, coming down at Mort in a dive. As he plummeted down, the bracer on his left wrist, the one he'd gotten from the king, glowed and enveloped his talons in a green fire.
It wasn't a terribly strong attack, but it hit it's mark and he dodged away as soon as he had slashed at the manifestation.

The room was growing gray, were they running out of time? They needed to finish this, and quickly

Sadness. He couldn't hide it from his face, couldn't mask his emotions so well as some people that he knew. This Mort might not be real, but that did not make this any easier.

And now, as the ceiling began to crack and turn grey, his gaze rose upwards. "The illusion is starting to shatter. We have to end this quickly, and find the source as Medea told us." He said, eyes lowering, as he looked first to Belladonna, then Sophie, and finally towards Julian, though the boil was going through quite a lot at the moment.

Mort's next spoken words chilled him to the bone. He knew. He could see them, could tell that they weren't a part of this make believe world, that they were different. The blast of power had him crying out, falling back, though he kept his grip on his dagger even as he crumpled beneath the attack.

"Mort, I hate to break it to you, but this whole world is one giant glitch, not just us."

He then threw one of his daggers, hoping that his aim was true.

The faerie tripped back a few steps from her attack, still glowering at Mort when she noticed... Sin on the floor. And familiar green seeping out.
That bad copy dream b***h was healing him.
"You're just as stubborn as your actual self!" The faerie growled as she swung forward with her staff. The end pointed down against the Eladrin's chest as she continued to frown.
"I like your succubus form better." With a sudden rush of green as a bundle of rose vines shot forth to obscure Sin. The faerie stood there a moment longer before she shoved the staff down until it clinked against the floor.
"I am vastly sorry..." And she was, if the quick hand pressed to one eye that came away wet was not an indication.

His tight expression softened when he glanced down at Sin's touch, the trickle of green small in amount but large in meaning. "You've done nothing wrong," he told her in a surprisingly soft voice, given how he had shouted moments before. "Nothing at all. You've done your king proud."

And yet before Mort could concentrate his power to heal, Julian set upon him in a flurry of talons and green fire that forced the king back. With a cry he began to fend the champion off, startled by the the fact that he was staring into pure yellow eyes where once had been the sharp eyes of his ranger. And Belladonna and Alex once again attacked as well while he was thrown off, the faerie screeching words that wounded for some reason he couldn't fathom, every syllable stabbing at his heart while the dhampir's acted more like a blunt weapon, smashing that which was opened. And Sophie continued to just approach, tense as a cat about to pounce on its prey, no words leaving her -

And then without warning Belladonna turned to Sin and destroyed her.

That was the final straw: that image of seeing his beloved wreak destruction in the hallowed halls of creation broke whatever frail barrier of optimism he had left. This was real. This was happening. They wanted to murder everything precious to him.

He could not stand for it.

The king rose and lifted his head imperiously, the death of his champion igniting righteous anger that flared in his green eyes, a pair that seemed to glow oddly against the growing gray around them. Without warning the ceiling of the great hall groaned and cracked, falling to pieces around them to reveal the new darkened and bruised sky. But Mort did not care for it: only for those who threatened his kingdom.

"You are not my friends," he hissed, brandishing his sword. "You are worse than enemies.

"You are monsters."

The sword began to glow white, humming as if alive. Baring his teeth in a snarl, the king rushed forward in a sudden burst of speed, his weapon cutting through the air with more force than it should have to clash against the faerie's miasma shield. The light pulsed as it struck each blow like an erratic heart, and in one fluid motion the barrage of attacks turned on Alex, a silvery ring emanating harshly in the open air. Even when the king leapt back to view them all once again, the sword did not lose its light - perhaps fueled by pure fury rather than the kingdom's magic.

"I chose you for your bravery and strength, but most of all for your character. I needed the knightly, the resourceful, the kind, and the confident to bring our - my kingdom to greatness. And now I see that all this time I have been conversing with traitors," he said coldly. "Tell me this then: If this is naught but a dream, why must you destroy it? You were all happy, were you not? You could create yourselves into whoever, whatever, you wanted, you could do whatever work you chose . . . Is that not the dream we all want in the end? To be in total control of our lives?

"What about your accomplishments? Your patients, Sophie, are they nameless faces to you now? You are one of the most celebrated alchemists in Om and the youngest to boot, and people of all races have come to see your wares and be healed. Kill me, and you coat your hands in not just my blood, but the blood of hundreds of innocents who once called you healer.

Julian, you told me the story of how you led your party out of the clutches of goblins when death was at hand, and not only did you show the ambassadors courtesy, but when I asked you to scout a high-risk area, you plunged in without a word. I thought you a brave and smart lad - this behavior is beneath you,"
the king raved, the image of a knightly warrior crumbling into disrepair spiking his anger. "Attacking your fellow champion in hopes of murder is inexcusable. I regret ever having thought chivalry was still alive in this kingdom, and you shame this kingdom and its king by ever thinking it was anything more than inhumane. You are as nothing to me now."

The king was practically quivering with rage by the time he turned his sharp gaze upon the thief. "Alex, you gods damned little b*****d. You came to Om when your home was too painful to stay, and I let you in no questions asked. I weathered your antics, your crimes, your smartaleck attitude, and even dared to call you friend in spite of all of that. Is this how you repay me? With a dagger in the back?" He scoffed derisively. "I should have known, seeing as you have two."

And by the time Mort faced the faerie, he was no longer bothering to mask the obvious pain behind his anger, the betrayal and hurt that fueled his indignation. There were a few moments of silence where he simply stared her down, his jaw taut as he clenched it. "When I first met you, you said it bothered you that no-one thought a small faerie could defend herself. But never did I think you could kill someone," he began, his voice growing heavy with emotion stronger than rage even. "Never. You were the spirit of Om, always asking questions, always poking your nose in, always welcoming to even complete strangers, always wearing that kind smile to warm even a weary traveler's heart . . . You were everything that I wanted and more and I loved you." Oh did he hate how his voice cracked. "Gods, but I loved you, moon lily. Wasn't that enough for you to be happy? Was I not enough . . . ?" Or had that been a ploy to get him in this very situation one day?

Mort backed away from them, the impact of his own words growing too much for him to bear. The tower revealed in the wake of the ceiling collapse called to him, and the urge to follow it became his only option now. "You would all destroy my happiness . . . But if you follow, heed my words now: I will strike you down if you get in my way." With one final troubled look to those he had once called allies, the king activated a spell: his cloak split in two and grew the rounded edges of wings, and with a powerful beat of his new limbs he lifted out of the stony carcass of what once had been his home and speared his way towards the tower.

Maybe there, he could find the answer to all of this. This time, the Voice would not be allowed to remain aloof about the truth.

Sophie took a step back from Mort. His words hurt her more than any damage she'd taken during this.. ordeal. Monsters. Not friends. Would this be how he thought of them when he woke up? Tears welled up in her eyes and she shook her head, unbelieving. It couldn't end like that. They couldn't do all this for nothing. Surely fate wasn't that cruel. Fingers clenched into fists and she wanted nothing more than to make him shut up. To make him stop filling her head with doubt. Especially when he directed his rantings at her. She wasn't that Sophie. She was the real Sophie and she real Sophie did whatever she had to to protect and save those she loved; even if they hated her for it.

On he went; from her, to Julian, to Alex, to Bells. Oh, Belladonna. This was hardest for her and her heart broke for her. She imagined it would be the equivalent of her killing Alex. The person you care about most in the world.. Even if they weren't them they wore that person's face and spoke such cruel words. But she knew Belladonna wouldn't hold a grudge. It wasn't her Mort saying these horrible things to her, after all. She was stronger than most gave her credit for.

So lost in her thoughts was Sophie that she didn't realise Mort had left until there was silence. Her eyes focused in time to see him off and it was then she felt the pull of the tower. That was where it would end. The final show down. She hurried to Belladonna, taking her hand and squeezing it. "Let's go, okay? We'll get this over and done with as quickly as possible."

His dagger had struck, but only barely. He grimaced from where he lay, and pushed himself to his feet, only in time to see Belladonna destroy Sin, completely and utterly.

Of course, that as about the time that Mort decided to be well and truly pissed.

Alexander kept his silence for a moment, giving the King his time to rant, to rave, to cut at them with words that were meant to hurt more then any mere blade could. It was when he said the word monsters though that Alexander had to laugh, the sound coming out of nowhere. It was so ridiculous, how could he not? In there true home, in the real world that they so desperately were trying to return everyone to, that was just what they all were.

Monsters. Like it was some kind of insult, he called them monsters. Alex continued to laugh, uncontrollably, unable to stop now that he started. The only thing in that moment that could halt the gales of laughter that bubbled forth was a flash of white hot light, the sound of humming, of power, just before Mort threw himself at Belladonna. Ya, that finally cut him short.

"No, Mort!" he called out, rushing forward himself in an attempt to pull his attention away from the fairy that he knew to to actually be a Reaper, a Witch.

A monster. If only Mort knew the truth behind those words.

When the attack was turned upon him, he was almost sorry he had put himself in it's path. The power behind it pummeled against his miasma shield, cracking it, weakening it until there was almost nothing left. The boil fell back onto the ground again, using two arms to shield himself from the onslaught, not that he helped even in the slightest. Pain lanced through him, as though every nerve ending in his body was set aflame, as though he had quite literally been set on fire.

Was there any version of Mort, any at all, besides the one that had grown to become his best friend, his zombro, that didn't want to completely destroy him in the worst way imaginable?

And then the attack was done, the King backed off, leaving behind a dhampire who was huddled down on the floor, teeth gritted tight, eyes closed against the pain.

"That wasn't me." He whispered, his voice hoarse. "I am not that Alex, nor would I want to be!" His voice raised in both strength and volume as he slowly uncurled himself from his place on the floor.

"A lonely man who traversed the land with no family to speak of, no loved ones to cherish, and who so desperately craved the attention of others that he would steal, cheat, and lie to gain it? That is not happiness, Mort!" He struggled up to his feet, stumbled, almost landed back on the floor but managed to catch himself.

The ceiling about him began to crack, to crumble and fall, revealing an inky black sky above, and a tower in the distance. The floor quaked beneath his feet.

"Back in my world, in your true world I have love. I have friendship. I have a home, I have happiness."

He looked towards Sophie, then gestured towards her.

"I have a family. And you, you are a part of that family as well."

He shook his head, very pointedly looking up towards the ceiling.

"No Mort. There is no happiness here to destroy. You will come to understand that." His second dagger flashed in his hand, he was ready to take this man out, this copy of his friend, and to have him understand.

....And then the man flew away, leaving a gaping dhampire behind.

"JACK DAMNIT! We have to go after him!" He stated, as though that wasn't already quite obvious. He took a few shaky steps towards where the dagger he'd thrown earlier lay, and bent down to retrieve it. With their power, he could run, and he could run fast. There was a chance that they could still catch him and end this.

He nodded at Sophie, though he looked tired, his body abused, his face haggard. "Yes, let's go."

How funny that Mort would call them monsters, when in reality none of them were. Undead, reaper, demon, but none monsters.
And then...
And then words cut into him like a thousand shards of glass, tearing and ripping at his heart and soul. He had forgotten his memories. In the fight with not-Sin, he had been too focused, too focused on his friend, too focused on reminding himself that he wasn't actually attacking his friend, he was attacking a copy made by whomever had stolen her.

He couldn't move as not-Mort railed against him, couldn't even speak up in his own defense. He knew he should have, deep down, but he was still learning, still trying. He wasn't a knight, he wasn't a ranger, that was a figment of his own imagination. He was still just a kid, still afraid of water, still terrified of humans in white coats waiting in the shadows. He hadn't been ready for this but he had signed up anyway, willing to do anything he could to save his friends. Sin had saved him more than a few times and she cared so much about Rosc and he didn't want to lose Lumi and...
And his nightmare was coming true. He was useless, there was nothing he could do but fail and fail and fail as one by one his friends were cut down before him. He'd had the nightmare several times since the fall of the Clans, even when he was at home. He'd wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and have to run to Michel's room like a terrified child. Mich hadn't understood, didn't know what was going on but said nothing. Julian had made him promised not to tell Mum, she had enough things to worry about. Mich was the only one who wouldn't press.

His memories, the fake ones, laughed at him. He was just a little boil playing pretend again. He hadn't done any of that, he would never be that brave. Only when he was delusional had he run into the face of danger, he never could have done such a thing if he'd been himself. He couldn't have been that friendly to a stranger without having a fake part of him, he never would have-

Stop.
He jerked once as if the word had been an audible snap against his spine.
You are smarter than this. Stop and think.
He took a deep breath as the not-Mort started cutting his speech into Belladonna and thought.

He hadn't channeled his miasma into a dire wolf, but he had tamed one in the wilds of War. He hadn't saved a group of travelers from goblins, but he had grabbed his best friend and shielded her in his wings while their former teacher breathed down a fire that made him scream. He hadn't been in his own mind when he helped up that ghoul from a destroyed kingdom, but it had been him, Julian Thanatos, who told Lumi to stay where she was, kissed her, and ran into a throng of students fighting hunters. He who had gone to Christmas Town for a second bloody time after pretty much vowing never to go back to that place of colorful madness to collect Joy to help save a student he'd only ever heard of.
He hadn't chosen to run into the crumbling tower to save his kingdom, but Julian the Ranger hadn't been the one to step forward when his friends were trapped, who volunteered to come into this sleep to try and save them, who had almost lost himself to this world but who was now fighting with everything he had to bring the ones he cared about home.
That boil was him. Julian Thanatos. Not a ranger, not a harpy, but a demon, an omen of Death.
He was a Harbinger. He was Halloween.
And Halloween can. Not. Die.

Dust from the collapsed ceiling kicked up when not-Mort took off, flying towards the tower in the distance, forcing Julian to shield his eyes. When his hand fell, he looked to his old friend, and maybe two new ones.

He walked over to to the others, both of the boils looking pretty worse for the wear. But at least the ghouls hadn't been hurt too much... At least not outwardly. All four of them had probably been pretty slashed up on the inside...
Everything Alex had said, it was all right. This world wasn't happiness. It might have been, but the Voice had certainly destroyed all hope of that. It might have been nice, but home... Home was better. He wasn't a lonely harpy raised by foster parents. He had a mother and father who cared deeply for him, four brothers who looked out for him. A friend who pushed him, a ghoul who made him want to try to be better than he was. Sure, there were hardships, hunters and things like this. But it was home.

"I'm with you guys." His smile was small and sad. "I could really use a good cup of tea after this." And a long, long, LONG cuddle with Lumi. If she'd let him, of course. Hell, he probably wouldn't even have the nerve to ask her for it, but it was nice to pretend that he might have the courage when this was all over.

Little time was given between the finishing blow on Sin and the words that followed, not even time enough to prepare oneself for any sort of attack. Belladonna was left to only stand there a moment and stare at where Sin had been, feeling guilty as hell but knowing it was right, and then snap her head around to see Mort attack her. A cry ripped from her as she staggered back but still felt the attack, surprised that he was hitting her at all when he hadn't this entire time. It hurt fiercely and when the attack was finally directed elsewhere, the faerie still lost her footing and crashed to the ground in a heap of gasps and pain.
And just as the physical pain was settling, the King felt it within his power to grant the emotional sort as well. Betrayers, they were traitors and liars. Each one of them a fake, a nearly flawless copy that had only just recently had control over their lives. Before that... They were all invented. By Mort, yes, but... Still just a creation not of their own.
Yet how did they explain that? When everything was steeped so fully in rage and disgust? Mort's words rang out and though they weren't yet directed at her, Belladonna still hated how angry they were, how bitter and how un-Mort. At least she was given the benefit of being the last, for when she finally was able to sit up and turn her tear stained face at him, it was her time to be destroyed.

A moment stretched out, agonizingly silent as that broken, enraged face looked down and found nothing it wanted.
In another lifetime there would be an apology for this moment. In another world they would both beg forgiveness and Belladonna would cry and tell him how hard she'd tried, how difficult this was and by some miracle of fate, he would understand. He would know, if he remembered this moment at all, that the girl on the ground who sat there with wide eyes and a ruddy tear stained face, who took all his harsh treatment without a word suffered so acutely because she loved him.
But even the knowledge that this was all fake, that all those fuzzy, loosening memories were just a dream, did not soften the blow. It still hurt far worse than anything in her life and the faerie still choked on her own breath when his voice cracked. And though she had been silent thus far, his last question brings out a startled, "Mort, no, please--" because that is the one thing she cannot handle. Having always been more than enough that she would happily toss herself into harm's way for him, the fact that even his subconscious would doubt that is the worst insult of all.
Involuntarily her head dropped to the floor, her cheek pressed against the cool marble as she bit her lip and tried not to sob. Hecate damn it, it wasn't real! It was fake and a lie and yet why did it hurt like reality?
Fingernails scrambled against unrelenting ground, tried to find a reason for all of this and returned to empty.

The sudden shout from Alexander snapped the faerie up and she hastily clattered to her feet, clumsy hands doing their best to snatch tears off her face. But they kept coming and she felt a fool for crying, but it was to be expected. No one could really think she would be that strong to take in his words without a few tears shed?
A sensation against her hand made Belladonna stop as she looked to see Sophie next to her, kindness extended in the wake of sorrow and the faerie did not bother to stop herself as she reached out and brought the girl into a fierce hug.
"Its not real." She murmured against Sophie's hair, for their mutual benefit though it might seem the words were more for the one who was crying. After a second the faerie let her go and wiped one more streak of wetness from her cheek. The staff that had been forgotten during all of that was retrieved and Belladonna nodded at Julian, a silent thanks of his loyalty. Tea sounded amazing right now, but it would be bitter if they did not succeed, if it could not be shared with Mort.
"We'll get him back." Belladonna announced, and then she was off, running toward something she didn't know apart from the fact that if they didn't hurry, they would lose. And she had already promised that this love would not be in vain.

Without another word, Julian summoned his animal companion and it broke his heart that Alpha was still loyal to him, licking his hand and whining over his weakened state even though they were now disconnected in a way. There wasn't anything left to say. They all knew what had to be done, and that was that.

Trying to remember just how it was done, Alexander stared at his daggers, concentrated, and then clashed them together, feeling a surge of power rolling through him.

With a glance towards Sophie he gave her a small smile. "See you at the tower, Sis." No Sissy today, she had earned better then that. .

And then Alexander took off out of the castle at speeds he would never be able to hope to achieve again in his lifetime.

Aiden appeared back in the Green Kingdom, only now in silver pants and a silver shirt instead of in armor. He looked around briefly to see it looked like a battle had taken place, one that led to the castle. He almost stepped forward to start heading there in hopes of finding out what happened but instead he forced his self to turn and portal away.
