"What do you mean?" Naida blinked as she paused in her unknotting.
It was probably a bit more difficult concept for her to understand. The question sounded to her, like something Shiro would ask.
Lin resisted the urge to roll her eyes, "And I would never tell her what to do because she's not married. It has nothing to do with her marriage status..."
But everything to do with her duty, Lin hated to think in terms of bloodlines but if anything happened to Wren, what were the chances of another heir? Elves were very emotional people, her father couldn't just marry just to have an heir could he? She doubted it.
"But she would pull out the grown woman thing, and I wouldn't be able to disagree with it."
Even if she thought it was irresponsible, but that was probably pot calling kettle black since she was taking her children along. If she really felt strongly, she wouldn't go at all.
"Really, I more expect her to pull out the argument that we're taking Andarien and Miyuki along, because really in the face of that I really can't argue with her."

Lancaeriel smiled. "Well, I suppose my first question ought to have been, have you seen him create these items, personally? Watched him do it, I mean?"
If Naida hadn't actually seen it happen, then she probably wouldn't have the information that Lancaeriel was looking for.
Earendil shook his head. "I didn't mean about marriage, I just meant calmed down, personality-wise."
He glanced up at Amanya, who was looking away from the two self-consciously. "Could you excuse us a moment, please?" he asked her politely.
The scholar nodded and left the room quietly, and Earendil turned back to Lin.
"Lin," he said quietly, but very seriously, "if you want to tell her about the danger that we will likely be facing, by all means, do so. But if she says that she wants to come with us anyways, please don't argue with her. Respect her decision, even if you don't agree with it, because as we both know, it really isn't our place to tell her what to do. And to argue with her on the matter would be showing her nothing but disrespect - not disrespect for her as a princess, but as a person. She may seem freespirited, but she has a good head on her shoulders, and we need to respect that. She shouldn't have to pull out any arguments at all."

Lin looked back at him, "I have no intention in getting into an argument with her. If she wants to come, she'll come. It's not worth it and I wasn't going to push it."
Yes, it sounded like she was going to, but it didn't mean she didn't think Wren was going to immediately protest just from the advice. She didn't know Wren enough, but knew Wren had to really fight for whatever freedom she had.
"It doesn't stop me however from worrying, about everyone. Not just her."
This was the only time she was going to admit, that even for them she was having second thoughts. It wasn't just about them, it was about the people coming with them.
Naida shook her head and verbally expressed it as well, "No, I haven't. I've only heard about it after the fact."
And her Aunt use to keep them as decoration until she packed them all up when she left for traveling.

"Ah." Lancaeriel smiled gently. "I see. Then you probably don't have the information I'm looking for. Thanks, anyways."
She closed her eyes and sighed contentedly. No one had touched her hair since her husband had last died, and though she would never let another man touch her hair, she had to admit that it was something she rather enjoyed.
"I can only imagine how many knots there must be," she said in an apologetic tone. "That's quite the wind coming off the ocean."
Earendil pinched the bridge of his nose and rubbed it hard to keep himself from saying what he wanted to say. If she had no intentions of arguing, why had she been talking about it? Sometimes he didn't understand his wife.
"It's natural to worry," he said instead. "But honestly, I think ... of everyone ... Wren is probably the most capable of taking care of herself, with the possible exception of Daeron. Maybe Lancaeriel if you count magical abilities."
He smiled and cupped Lin's cheek in his hand. "I'm as worried as you are," he murmured, "but there's not much we can do aside from hope that Lily's message makes it through to her aunt and that we have the kind of guide that we need."

"That's okay," Naida giggled, "That's what happens when you have long hair."
She should know, her hair was quite long, though not as long as some. Besides she liked playing with hair, it was something she had gotten from her own mother. It happened to Naida too, but oddly enough she didn't do her hair up anywhere near as much as other people.
Lin leaned into his touch and sighed. She could tell she had vexed him once again. Sometimes he read too much into her actions, or maybe it was a culture thing she didn't know. Maybe it was just a her thing.
"Thank you," she reached up and ruffled his hair, "And sorry for vexing you again. I'll be clearer with my intentions next time eh?"
Though if they couldn't leave until they found a guide at least they would be here for a while.

Earendil's eyes softened, and he chuckled softly and kissed her lightly before standing up and offering her his hand. "Shall we take a break from lessons?" he smiled. ~~~~~ Time continued to pass, and the travelers learned more and more about the city and grew more and more comfortable there. After the group had been there about three weeks, Corazin and Andarien closed the shop early and went back to Corazin's parents' house for dinner. The dining room table was designed to hold six - usually Cantor, Lara, Lily, Earendil, Lin and Miyuki - but with two more, Cantor had added an extra leaf to the table so that there was room for Corazin and Andarien as well. "Nana!" Andarien beamed when he came into the house and spotted Lin. He broke into a run and threw his arms around Lin and hugged her tight.

Lin laughed as she hugged Andarien, "Andarien! Miss us?"
It was strange not seeing him as much as they normally did. Actually it was kind of strange not seeing both her children like she normally did. While sometimes, Miyuki went with them into the city, most of the time she was in lessons or for some reason or another off with River and Jess. Rumour had it she was working with Jess on something, but what it could be she had no idea.
Miyuki, also came into the house, but from the yard. In one hand she held a seemly empty bag with many pockets and in the other she held a scroll that had a seal on it. Both were experiments of hers. The first, was of course her experimental bag, which wasn't as hard as she had feared. It was simply isolating the different runes and putting them in their proper places. It helped that Jess was experimenting himself, so she didn't have to worry as much on messing up the process.
The other, the scroll was an experiment in a security rune. A weaker version of her chain runes coupled something to ensure only she could open it. It was held closed with a leather strap and buckle because that is where she wanted to put that security run on. The strap allowed her to "decorate" it with a chain rune and where the bucket would clasp on, would be where the security rune held. It was weak because the chains were only meant for one person (the person trying to open the bag), but she figured just the action of it would scare most people off.
She hoped, she knew some people weren't that bright.
Unfortunately she could only currently key it to herself using blood (which was ew of her on so many levels), and more unfortunately she needed to ask someone to try it out. She would see after lunch, maybe ada was willing to give that a go.
The bag however, she liked and wanted to show Andarien, because he had tools and odds and ends. Maybe he would like a real one.

Andarien pressed his cheek against Lin's chest and snuggled into her. "Mmhm. But I'm learning lots with Corazin and when we travel I'll be with you all the time so it's okay, I can do it."
Corazin chuckled softly. "He's a very fast learner," he confided to Lin with a grin. "In two weeks he's learned as much as any of my apprentices learned in a year."
He stepped aside to let Miyuki in the door and grinned at his sister as she came down the stairs. "Evening, Lily."
She grinned back at her brother. "Corazin. Good to see you again. Got tired of cooking for yourself?"
He chuckled. "Better than you cooking for me." He laughed and ducked as she pretended to throw something at him, but there was laughter in her eyes as well.
Lara appeared from the direction of the kitchen. "Well, now we're just waiting on Cantor to come home. Come on into the dining room and get settled, dinner's on the table. He'll be here any moment."

Lin beamed widely at this, "That is good to know."
And prideful of the fact she wasn't quite surprised by this. It was Andarien's love in life (in terms of what he wanted to do).
Miyuki waved at her brother, "Hey, I have something to show you after dinner."
She carefully set the bag and scroll aside, since they were being told to get settled. She hadn't realized so much time had passed, and since she planned to show Andarien the bag, she set it where she could get to it later with the sealed scroll on top.

Andarien grinned and waved back at Miyuki. "Hey, you got a new bag?" he asked, eying the bag that she had set on the floor. "It looks different ... like a different kind of bag than we usually see."
Earendil came in from the living room and ruffled Andarien's hair affectionately. "Did I hear dinner being called?"
"Yes," Lara nodded, ushering everyone to the dining room. "Come, sit."
Corazin led the way, and Earendil let his family go ahead of him before following, with Lily bringing up the rear.

Miyuki followed everyone else in but stayed close to her brother.
"Of sorts, it's a style found in this country, or at least around here. Jess made it because he wanted to try some new techniques, and he's letting me have his experiments to try my experiments on. I wanted to show you, I think you'll find it more useful."
Well, so would she, but she thought Andarien would like it too.

Andarien made sure to sit between Lin and Miyuki at the table, and Earendil sat on the other side of Lin.
"The kind with lots of pockets, like you tried on my bag the first time but couldn't think of how to do it?" Andarien asked hopefully as Lily and Corazin also took a seat. "Because that would be really cool - I could put all different gears in all different pockets and they could keep separate and I wouldn't have to worry about how many I have ..."
He already had a dreamy look in his eyes.
Just then the front door opened and Cantor's voice called out: "Set another place, Lara - you will never guess who's joining us for dinner."

"Yea," Miyuki nodded, "That bag also has inside pockets so those pockets have been runed as well. I thought it would be a good place to keep weapons in so if there are weapons you have packed away you don't have to go rummaging around for them... actually there's a lot I'd rather not go rummaging around for..."
Now that she thought about it, really the only thing she would want to rummage around for, are for clothes.
"The last bit I was hoping for are runes to prevent people from getting into your bag, but that one is... a bit harder, because well... if they really wanted into your bag they could cut it open and I don't think there's a way to prevent that..."
She wished there was, but there was only so much she could do in that regard. Her thoughts were distracted by hearing there was another guest.
"Who's coming?" Miyuki asked curious.

Andarien was really eager to see Miyuki's experimental bag - he loved the sound of it - but he was prevented from answering by the arrival of Cantor and the as yet unseen guest.
"Who is it, Father?" Lily repeated after Miyuki, pushing her chair back and standing.
Cantor just grinned and stepped aside, allowing a woman to step in after him. She was not tall, only a few inches taller than Miyuki, and had black hair shorter than Wren's. Her ears were round - clearly, she was not related to the family.
Her clothes were unlike any that Earendil had ever seen - even though the family was clearly not shocked by them. Despite the cold weather, she was not wearing much at all, only a leather bra-like top and short skirt that was slitted halfway up the sides.
She was therefore showing an awful lot of skin, and what skin was showing - aside from her face, which was smooth - was covered in scars. Interestingly enough, they did not mar the tattoo that curled around her torso, a red and gold tattoo of a dragon.
Andarien and Earendil were absolutely floored by her appearance, but Lily let out a squeal worthy of a very excited River and just about tackled the woman in a hug.

While no one in Lin's family ever dressed like that, she had been in a normal school long enough to have the (mis)fortunate of seeing girls dressed somewhat like that. Granted, Lin had to admit, a miniskirt had nothing on that skirt, and only a bra would have had them barred from school. So she had to stare a bit, but wasn't as floored as her husband and son.
Miyuki's reasoning though took the cake. She had to admit, she never had seen anyone dressed like this woman. However, she reasoned that maybe it was just the culture, after all mermaids didn't wear a lot. Though, she had to admit, if one didn't include the tails, mermaids technically wore more than this woman.
Granted her thoughts were more geared towards how the woman was not cold (maybe she was like the mers), rather than the amount of skin that was showing. Well that and she was wondering what she had been through to have so many scars.
