Catriona sighed and took her seat again near the back. She smoothed her hands over the skirt of her dress and crossed her legs as she listened to Invictus speak about the charms. She wondered which one would speak to her when the box was finally passed to her. Letting her fingers find the one meant for her, she smirked when she pulled the fish charm out of the box before passing it to the next student.

Well that made sense, she supposed. She was a cat sidhe, and fish were among her favorite foods. The meaning behind the charm fit her as well. As yet, she wasn't very interested in children. She was, however, extremely interested in monetary gain...

DAY 3 IS OVER!

No more rolling for Day 3 beyond this point, but you can edit your posts if needed!

As a note, for people who have missed previous days for being busy, as this is important to finish the class, please make a solo thread in this subforum and roll out/RP out your student doing the work there. However, to exchange a charm you must roll a 20 sided dice and get a multiple of 5.

You cannot make up the set-stuff-on-fire assignment.

Points will be posted here later.

** Note: RP played a much bigger part this grading than previously and the scores reflect this more than the 'luck' of any particular student. smile

There were no mats to sit on when the class entered the room that day. In fact, Invictus was standing calmly where he'd normally be seated and it almost appeared he was going to be heading out somewhere. He waited a moment for the entire class to gather in before he motioned to follow him, walking calmly, but not quickly. For those impatient, one couldn't really beat him to where he was taking them if they didn't know where he was going.

The walk wasn't a long one, however. Less than 5 minutes.

He stepped through a circular doorway and out into an outdoor garden which was simply alive with foreign plantlife, a few small koi ponds, and several ornate looking bridges. There had to have been about five or six 'islands', and if anybody went off exploring for a small bit, they would discover that there were small luck based games on each of them.

"Now, I'm going to have you test the luck of your incense as well as the charms you have gotten for yourself in order for you to see how effective they can be." he said simply. As Invictus had been the one to demonstrate them in the first place, moving to a table from the first island and quickly besting it, before he then moved on to the next one and made it a demonstration as well. He stopped there, however.

"You will need to pass five of these challenges, but so you know - sometimes being lucky will save you from harm." his tone implied that not being lucky might actually hurt a bit.

Before he moved to go settle on the furthest most edge of the garden, however, he did make a final remark; "I will have something for the students who do the best at the end of this."

Mechanics

Invictus has set up a luck-based obstacle course! Invictus wasn't about to let you all go without a bit more pain! Yes, this will hurt your student a bit if they fail their challenge.

There are 5 steps you must get through. Each is based off of a luck based theme which you can write as anything you want. Be creative! It could be anything from matching to actual gambling of a sort. It is open ended for your creativity within the limits of the rolls you get below:

Roll 5 d100 (in separate posts or same one, up to you if you want to interact with other people who may be rolling!) (If you get a 'roll again', count your -next roll after that- in the original rolls as the re-roll and then roll again in another post)

Quote:

1-10 - If your luck is 15 or higher, you move on unscathed. Otherwise, you lose 5HP. Ouch!
11-20 - If your luck is 35 or higher, you move on, but you lose 10 HP. If your luck is below 15, you have to sacrifice an additional 10 HP and roll again! (So 10 or less = -20 Extra Ouch!). You can choose to sacrifice 5 luck to save all your HP! All others move on unscathed.
21-30 - If your luck is 25 or higher, you move on unscathed! Lower rolls again with no damage.
31-40 - If your luck is below 15, you have to roll again and -5 HP. You can choose to sacrifice 5 luck to save your HP.
41-50 - If you have 35 Luck or higher IMMEDIATELY MOVE TO THE END OF THE ENTIRE COURSE (Skip the rest of the steps). Otherwise, -5 HP and roll again. You may sacrifice 5 luck to save your HP.
51-60 - If you have only 5 luck (or lower, somehow), IMMEDIATELY MOVE TO THE END OF THE ENTIRE COURSE (Skip the rest of the steps). All others take -5 damage
61-70 - If your luck is 10 or higher, you move on unscathed. Less than that and you lose -5 HP.
71-80 - If your luck is 10 or lower, you gain +10 HP! If your luck is higher than that, you -5 HP. All move on. You may chose to sacrifice 5 luck to save your HP.
81-90 - If your luck is between 10 - 15, you move on unscathed! Higher or lower lose -10 HP All move on. You may choose to sacrifice 5 luck to save your HP.
91-99 - If your luck is above 30 +10 HP. Move on. All others must roll again. No HP Loss.
100 - ULTRA LUCKY! No matter how much luck you have, you are safe to move on!

Willow's tail flickered as she took the new charm she'd been given and was watching Invicitus explain. The tigress seemed intrigued by the games. It was something different, and luck, it seemed to perhaps be on her side as she sat at one of the games looking it over. The game she'd sat down at seemed to be simple. It seemed she had to be lucky and get the right color marble to move on. They were all in a basket and when you spun the handle one would come out.

Willow was looking at the contraption curiously. As the tiger began to spin the basket she noticed there were a lot of white balls but mixed in were black, red, blue, green and a gold. She was really hoping for the gold but any of the passing balls would do. Shortly a ball rolled out of the basket. Willow looked at it curiously it seemed to be a blue ball. Well she still passed!

Dev’s interest was piqued when she noticed there were no mats in the classroom today. Would they be doing something more hands-on today? Her tail swished with excitement. This wasn’t the War Clan, where she was expected to fight. Whatever Invictus decided to throw at her she assumed she would be able to handle it so long as she wasn’t battling. Battling wasn’t very high on her list of favorite things to do. She kept her lips sealed when he gestured for the class to follow after him. Dev remained with her friends, occasionally making a remark or two during the brief walk before they passed through a doorway to enter an outdoor garden. Her ears perked at the foreign shrubbery then darted to the ponds then to the koi inside the ponds then to the bridges. She hummed thoughtfully at the instructions she had been given. Test out the luck of her incense and charm by passing five challenges. The cu sith eyed the islands before making her way toward one. How difficult could that be?

When she walked toward the first island, she noticed the attendant with a pile of cups. “Whit’s ‘at fur?” Dev inquired. The attendant smiled, easing into her chair as she spread the cups onto a table. “I have multiple coins.” The attendant brandished a set of coins, one of them gold. She placed the coins in a line and covered each of them with a cup. She continued to smile politely as she shifted the cups with fluid movements. The attendant lifted a cup to reveal the gold coin. “Find the gold coin.” Dev nodded her head. Sounded simple enough, although the attendant’s now-sly grin did unnerve her. Was there a trick? The attendant nodded in return and began to move the cups. Her movements with slow at first, but quickly began to pick up pace before the canine student was staring at the cups with dismay. They were all a blur now! “Find the coin.” Silence. Her ears flattened. “Uhhh. ‘at one?” Dev pointed to a cup and lifted it. She coughed loudly when smoke began to billow from the cup. “Whit?!” She quickly placed the cup back down and walked away, coughing and waving away wisps of grey. The attendant chuckled.

The next challenge had boxes lined up in a row. She walked closer to peek inside, but found they were covered with flaps. There was a simple piece of instruction for her to follow: reach her hand into one of her boxes to find the marble. Marble? So one of these boxes contained a marble? Dev eyed the boxes before walking closer and reluctantly reaching her hand into one of the boxes. Nothing awry so far. She groped around inside the box until she managed to brush against something small and round. Her face lit up, but as soon as she grasped the marble she yelled as a tiny shock race up her arm. “Whit a funny game,” she grumbled, tossing the marble back into the box and trotting toward the next game.

Her mood lifted when she realized that her next game would be a matching game. Not only would it test her luck, but it would test her memory skills as well. She beamed at the attendant before gazing at the cards spread across the table. “Please match all the cards as quickly as possible,” the attendant informed her. Dev responded with a curt nod before reaching for the first two cards. Soon there was only the sound of the ghoul constantly flipping over cards in a systematic manner. Her eyes took in each image, memorizing their position for future reference when she found the counterpart. Once she reached the midway point she began to slowly curl her lips into a grin as she mowed her way through the cards. It wasn’t long until she had the cards back in a neat stack. She shot the attendant a smug grin as she gently slid the pile across the table toward him. “Here ye go.” How lucky of Dev to stumble upon a matching game. She was pretty good at those.

The next game she stumbled upon was roulette. Her ear twitched curiously as she eyed the game set up. Dev had only played it a few times, so she didn’t feel particularly confident in her ability to gamble. The horseman at the set up offered her a reassuring smile and briefly relayed her the instructions. “Simply reach 10 coins in winnings to pass.” He passed her a small stack of coins and stood back, waiting for the student to place her bets. She crossed her arms, scrutinizing the numbers painted on the wheel before reluctantly selecting a couple numbers. “Three on five.” Dev didn’t want to bet all of her coins in one go. What if she was unlucky? But she grinned silently as the horseman slid extra tokens told her. “Thank ye. Four on nineteen.” Again, the wheel spun, gears clacking as the ball rolled from spot to spot before her grin stretched even wider. “Thank ye, again.” She bowed to the attendant when she counted up her coins: at least ten.

Dev was feeling fairly lucky. What challenge should she take on next? She decided to head for an island with a challenge involving dice. Again, the directions were simple: roll double numbers. She picked up the dice, letting them jingle against each other in the palm of her hand. The ghoul hesitated, wondering whether or not to actually roll the dice. Then she quickly snorted at the idea. Of course she had to roll. It was the challenge, but when should she roll it? Would the time make a difference in the results at all? She let the dice fly out of her hands and clatter to the ground. She snorted when she realized she had received a pair of snake eyes. Not exactly the luckiest combination, but for her purposes it was more than enough. Amused, she strolled away and headed toward another island.

On the next island, Dev found scratch cards. She furrowed her brows together, curiously picking up one of the cards to examine it closely. Why in Jack’s name would the Conquest Clan have scratch cards? She seemed highly suspicious of them, if only because she found the idea of Conquest horsemen and scratch cards to be an odd combination to imagine. Dev confusedly scratched the back of her ears as she considered which squares to scratch. How many squares were they supposed to choose again? Oh Jack. She could barely remember how these blasted cards worked. The cu sith pursed her lips before finally reaching up to lightly scratch the surface of one of the squares. To her disappointment, it revealed a blank. At least the next square she picked held the Horsemen clan symbol, but she needed to have multiples of the symbol to actually win anything. She decided to try out a couple more squares before sighing and placing the card down. This one was definitely a bust. Dev chose to walk away from it before anything bad happened to her.

Slot machines. Again, Dev knitted her eyebrows together as she observed the contraptions. She really couldn’t imagine Conquest and slot machines meshing well together, but somehow here the machines were in plain sight. There were already a few other students at some of the stations, calmly seated in the cushions as they continuously pulled the lever and eyed the icons that spun around in the screen. By one of the machines was an attendant with a basket full of coins. She walked over and the horsemen granted her a handful of the coins. Dev counted them up before making her way toward one of the free machines. She sat down and continued to stare at the slot machine. This was so Jacking weird. Dev shook her head before finally depositing the first coin and cranking the lever. It spun immediately, the icons moving in a blur before it gradually slowed down. She sighed. No good. She put in another coin and pulled. No good. Another coin.

Ding. Ding. Ding.

A swarm of coins spewed from the machine, leaving Dev confused and angrily yelling at it to stop. Those coins Jacking hurt.

Auri Listened to her challenge. Be the one with the most luck. Well, Auri made her luck. She owned her luck. And she was going to make it all happen today. She had a good feeling when she dawned her business wear this morning, and her midas touch was giving her suit a steady shine. To her that meant today was going to be a profitable day.

This first sign was that the Auri had been given an even better charm today than the one she had yesterday. And when she heard they were going to be testing them with games of luck, well, let's just say it was time to clean this casino out.

GAME 1: Roll 87, Luck 19, HP 30

Quote:
81-90 - If your luck is between 10 - 15, you move on unscathed! Higher or lower lose -10 HP All move on. You may choose to sacrifice 5 luck to save your HP.

Auri walked up to a dealer at a nearby table and sat down. The horseman running the game was dressed in a nice gown, something worthy of an upscale casino. He seemed like a decent enough fellow. Auri didn't catch up on any signs he might try to cheat her. So she asked him how to play and got ready to start the day off big.

It was a simple card game, much like black jack, only it appeared to have pictures of livestock. The goal was to own the most valuable animals by the end of the round without getting a wolf in your hand. You were awarded tiles which could be used in other certain games. Auri was always ready to move stocks... well in this case livestocks.

Hand after hand Auri was wiping the house clean. Her entire half of the table was taller than the demon ghoul with prize tiles. She figured at this point she has amassed her own weight in tiles and that would be enough to make it through the rest of these games with little effort.

"Hit me." She slapped down her last hand, three swine. The house cards showed two roosters and a herd dog. "That'll do pigs," she stated to her paper caricatures as she slid them to the dealer.

It was B-E-A-utiful. She hadn't cleaned out a joint this badly since her sixth birthday. Those clown had it coming. The dealer took another of what seemed to be his endless supply of tiles and threw it on top the stack. Auri stared at her earnings and sized up how best to even get them to the next table.

"Alright now to just take these and..."
she stopped as the sound of little wooden clinks began to multiply. To her horror a miniature avalanche of splinters and horseman letters came tumbling down. Auri tried to run away, but it was too late. The mass had caught her on the back and soon had her buried over her head.

She never thought that you could be too lucky. Well, lesson learned.

"You ghuys hafff a carptt?" she muffled out from the pile

The rest of the trials went particularly well. With her tokens she was able to put a tile on every spot on the roulette, guaranteeing her advancement. She traded them in for as many scratch-offs she needed until she finally won.

"TRIPLE CHERRY BABY! Moving on!"

She got dozens of marbles for the "plinko" game. Way more that she needed to land it the right spot. Many of them got stuck since she dumped them all at once, aggravating the horseman staff.

But none of that prepared her for the last challenge. A lone representative of the horseman clan stood stoically behind a table. "So what's your game?" she asked the clansman. He put a black silken onto the table and three coins. Two silvers coins and the third gold. He told her that this last test was to pick the cup with the gold coin. He put all three into the bag and shook it around. A large smirk spread across her face. He obviously didn't know what kind of demon she was. Auri reached into the bag while maintaining direct eye contact with the horseman. And to his complete surprise her hand emerged with not one but 3 golden coins.

She leaned across the table to him. "The citizens of Halloween don't rely on luck. We make our own!" She slapped the coins on the table and left the classroom.

Technically, Amarus was more or less awake. Technically, she was in one piece. However, her and her new friends had just gotten sucked into that stupid void thing, draining a considerable amount of energy. She was not at all well-equipped to handle the strain of whatever challenge Invictus was about to throw at them.

So when she arrived at class, and there were no mats whatsoever, she was incredibly skeptical. What was he going to do to them this time? Particularly, how was she going to ruin whatever he gave them to do. When he led them out into the garden, and she saw that there were several islands, she felt a nagging sense of dread ripple her calm interior senses.

This was going to suck. It was going to jacking suck so much. She scanned the surroundings slowly and carefully. An obstacle course based on luck...? This was not going to pan out at all. Especially since it was based on not only her luck, but rather her incense's luck as well. She stared at the charm she'd gotten to replace the lock one. Much better. She'd never even heard of this one, but... it seemed a lot more useful.

The first island offered Amarus an unpleasant game: she approached a table with a sign that said to "choose her weapon." On the table, there was some kind of gun, a fake flower, a lock-picking kit and a jar of goo. She really did not like any of those, because she was suspicious about the ones which MIGHT have a use, and most of them... seemed like they would have no possible use at all = A=;;; Still, she chose the lock-picking kit. The other items seemed to vanish, somehow (was it a trick?...) and she headed towards the next island, thinking she'd escaped this one's wrath.

Not so. As she was trying to cross the bridge to the next one, she encountered a very short clansmen with an insane beard. He bleated at her, much like a goat might. As he tilted his head up, she noticed his eyes were even goat-like. "I am... so... hungry..." he told her, between bleats. She looked at the lockpicks in her hand, and thought Well, I'm off to a great start.

"Unless you eat metal, I've got nothing for you," she told the goat-looking man. Weird. A small part of her held out the irrational hope that he really would accept anything.

Turns out the larger rational part of her was right. He shouted, "I ONLY EAT FLOWERS. ONLY FLOWERS. ARE YOU STUPID? ARE YOU DENSE?" He then headbutted her and ran off somewhere. Amarus was left clutching her stomach (as he really was rather short) and gripping the lockpick packet in her other hand. As if the flower was the answer. As the clansman retreated, she thought she heard him taunt her with, "If you're not dense, you must be incredibly unlucky!" before bleating into the distance.

Great. Good start, Amarus. Good start.

The next island wasn't much better. She came to a second table, her stomach still kind of sore. This table had three guns on it. ... Hadn't she just picked a weapon on the last island? This table had a crone surveying it, though. When Amarus reached up to take one of the guns, the crone swatted her hand away. "Not this kind of game, no you don't! You need to know the rules, first!"

"The rules?..." Amarus asked, immediately just a fraction more skeptical than she had been when entering the trial for the first time.

"Since you didn't pick the gun, you get one try! JUST ONE! Take up a pistol, and basically, what you're going to do is this!" The crone, before Amarus had a chance to react, took a pistol she had already been holding under the table and shot herself in the temple. It was a toy gun, and squirted water all down the side of her face. Her response to that was to laugh manically. Amarus was... not very fond of this trial. It felt like she had not had anywhere near enough rest after the void to deal with these things.

Still, she couldn't progress without this. She picked up the gun in the middle and fired it her temple, eyes screwed shut. Why was she playing their stupid game?

Confetti shot out at her face, and if it wasn't for the seemingly rocket-powered streamers which equally swatted her in the temple, she would have been fine. As it was, she rubbed her temple, muttering. Now her stomach and her head hurt. She was really... not enjoying this whole luck thing.

Amarus set the pistol down, the crone laughing the whole time, and carried her lock picks off onto the next isle.

Which had better not have any goats, nor crones, to mess with her.

So it was coming to this, wasn't it - a test of faith and luck - two things that he truly believed he had not of when he needed it the most. Walking up to his personal test, he looked down at the contraption in front of him, a simple box that seemed to stand precariously open, the teeth of the cover almost baiting the player to try their luck.

It was pretty obvious if you looked at it, put hand in box, grab the orb that just about sang to him, and hope that he had four fingers and a thumb when he pulled his hand back out. It was the whole . . . what triggered the mechanism to snap which was almost invisible, his ears twitching softly as he stared it down, deciding to wait and see if it would give it away to him.

Holding his charm in one hand, the auspicious coin soft him his hand, his fingers rubbing the unfamiliar words as he stuck his hand in, one eye winced closed as his coloured nails touched the soft surface of the orb. When he attempted to pick it up, he realized one of the difficulties that came with this challenge. It was smooth and soft and very difficult to pick up, without touching anything further, or slipping out of his hands and hitting the surface again.

It took a few more minutes of trying to paw at the orb that he caught purchase, and after gripping and just letting the dice roll, he safely got the first orb out. Whew! Rolling it between his fingers, he accepted a small smile break his concentration, he looked up at the rest of his trial.

This would take a while.

Walking up to the next box, he gave it a look over - there was nothing to it that had changed since the last box, with the exception that the orb had a new colour - a strangely nice yellowish green, the shiny ball almost teasing him as much as the first one.

Blast his addiction to shiny.

Going for the same way as before, Jack wasn't thinking caution anymore, the soft feel of the orb taking over his common sense. If it was going to stay this way - he would be done in moments and laughing his way home, an arm full of shiny orbs and --- SNAP.

JACK. DAMN.

An actual inhumane sound escaped from the cat's mouth as the teeth of the box clamped down on his hand. But it didn't sheer flesh from bone or anything, it was more like getting your hand banged between doors, an instant scrape followed by mind-numbing aches.

Pulling his hand out when he could, his eyes closed as he went to lick at it, his fingers death-gripping the orb.

Well now he knew what that did.

Ugh, he still had three to go, didn't he.

Wandering over to his third box, he looked in to the contents more carefully, sucking on his knuckles that were slashed with red from the teeth of the previous box, he decided staring might actually work. So, he was there, waiting and tempting the teeth, holding his sore hand between the jaws, expecting it to clamp down the same way it had before hand.

Frowning softly, he tempted fate again, pressing his fingertips softly on the next orb, expecting the snap again, his free hand holding the first two, and his charm, the soft metal almost like a silent promise. As he waited for his fingers to catch purchase again, his tail swayed softly behind him as he lifted the orb softly, exhaling the breath he was holding, unknowingly.

[[Redoing Roll 1, -1 save. Edit: I had read the wrong number instructions, and did all math from here on wrong OTL *redoes the text while putting in RP*]]

The third one was a series of doors. Not a word of a lie. There were 3 doors, in a row. And no way to get past them without doing... something. Without choosing any one of them, she opened all three doors. However, as she opened the third one, a little squeaky voice said "Time's up! Better get going, going, going!" She had no clue where it was coming from, but a little toy mouse started to approach her, making an ominous whirring sound. It was at the bridge, and she had some time yet, but... it was coming up rather faster than she had hoped.

She stepped into the middle door, just like she had last time, and saw that it led to only two doors. She chose the one on the left, and found that it was locked. She tried the one on the right, to find that it opened just fine: when she got through it, however, there was another door. There weren't ceilings or anything, just doors and doors and doors and some walls because, well, apparently that was part of this task's charm. In this space, as such, there was only one door to proceed through, and it was locked. Cursing, she took out the lock picks. This must be where they came in handy... The mouse, behind her, was saying "Ticking, whirring, just let me love you!"

When she dared to look behind her, it was approaching rather quickly. She had to assume that one of these paths had no locked doors, and that was how it tested one's luck. Great. It was a good thing her skill with breaking into things she wasn't supposed to be in would help her compensate for her heinous lack of luck: she did not want that mouse reaching her.

In a few moments, she had opened the painfully easy lock. Seriously, it just needed like.. one jiggle, and the tumblers gave way. Easiest lock ever. Clearly it was designed to yield to anyone with the lock picks. She headed on through the door, and as an afterthought, shut it behind her. Jacking creepy mouse thing.

As she was leaving this island, she thought she heard a tiny explosion, and some pathetic mice-like squeaks of pain.

Well, two more left.

Keeping another staring contest alight, he stuck his hand back in the mouth of the trap, his tail flickering constantly now, it was a wreck on his nerves due to the fact that he wasn't sure what was setting off what, or if there was something specific he was doing.

It was the hardest thing he had ever done, just letting time pass and not scooting away with the shiny stuff when he could. Sighing outwards, he finally decided that the critter was not ready to snap at him, he swooped his hand in and grabbed the orb, his hand dragging across the panelling around the holding hole for the orb. . .

This time he was ready, the click-click sound for the releasing mechanism more evident this time, as he skirted his hand away as quickly as he could. Which technically wasn't fast enough, the CLINK sound coming together and snapping him softly in the finger ends, sending a much smaller jolt of pain through his hands, but nothing. . . horrid.

Giving off a soft curse as he licked his hand again, his eyes narrowed on the last box.

He was doing this. He was making it happen.
