Vinny Leavitt

As he waited for his answer - wholeheartedly expecting to be yelled at but still not caring - he was surprised to hear Mr. Olsen talk very gently on the phone. He almost sounded nice. Daddy...? Was he talking to his daughter? Vinny never thought of Mr. Olsen outside of school, and he sure as hell couldn't picture someone so cruel having any kind of lover. Now the real surprise came when he overheard Mr. Olsen mention Akito's name. He didn't know the guy personally, but he remembered having a class or two with him, this being one of them. So the rumors were true... The guy seemed friendly enough, then one day he just stopped showing up. This entire time the guitarist assumed he dropped out for some reason he didn't want to get involved in.
When the conversation moved to him, Vinny built his steel wall back up to defend himself from what would happen. He was a little disoriented by how quiet the teacher's tone was, but was far too angry to be completely thrown off. "We're not in the military!" he pointed out. "This is high school. About half of the entire student body doesn't care. You punishing me just tells them that they can get away with it consequence free!" He paused, his anger building up. There were thoughts buzzing in his head, vicious ones, and one slipped out! "Or are you targeting me because I'm a guy?" he accused. His expression was strong and firm, but his mind was a wreck. What are you doing?! he mentally yelled. Stop this! You're going to get murdered! But he didn't. He couldn't. "You get dumped by your boyfriend and now you've got a grudge against all men in general, is that it? Is that why you've been giving outrageous assignments, too? Because you're bitter?" Never mind that he just learned about something illegal, he wasn't as cruel as Mr. Olsen.

"Hey, pay attention!"

"That's not it, you're overstepping your bounds, Leavitt!" he barked, only to see something in Vinny's eyes that he'd seen before. Akito had stood up to him more often than not. "You're not as tough as you think you are," he'd say, then laugh, push Dexter's hair from his eyes and kiss him. It was the first time since his divorce that he'd been able to feel something other than frustration or anger, and it was suddenly snatched away from him. Akito left without a goodbye, without even a note. He'd heard through another student that he was gone to another school, that he'd gone back to study with his family, that he had a new mate in mind. not even Caroline could pull him out of his depression, and by the time he'd resurfaced enough to be a good father to her, something had changed. She'd become more distant, as was to be expected with her age. Expected or not, though, it was too much for Dexter. He was surprised he hadn't had a stroke yet.
Dexter fell back into his chair, slumping forward and covering his eyes with his hand. "You're right," he said quietly, choosing not to look at the student. "But it's not a grudge against men. It's against everyone." He ran his hand down, dropping it on his lap and looking over to a window. "I was married at a very young age, became a father way before I was ready, and realized far too late that my wife was having an affair. Honestly, I'm not even sure that my daughter's mine, but I've never cared. I raised her, she's my baby. I divorced my wife, but she took away my little girl, so until I came here, I was relatively empty. Then, I met Akito." He paused, taking a deep breath as he tried to figure out why he was telling a student all of this. But it'd been far too long that he'd been living in silence with this ache in his chest. He needed to tell someone, anyone, just get this off his chest before he exploded.
"Akito was young, fun, vivacious, already past 18 and beautiful. He was my teaching assistant, at least until he came onto me. Then he became a lot more. I fell in love very deeply, and very fast. I assumed that the feeling was mutual. Then one day, he left, without a word or even a clue as to where he was going, and the next thing I knew, I heard about him returning to his pack with a new lover and no qualms about what he'd left behind. Even Caroline, my daughter, couldn't pull me out of where I was. And now, she's far too old to spend all of her time calling her Daddy and talking to him all day. She's at that age where she's branching out, wanting to date boys and hang out with her friends. I can't even be there to protect her in case something happens." Dexter finally looked back to Vinny, running a hand through his thick black hair. "I'm not bitter, I just haven't had any time to grieve. I lost my wife, my daughter, my lover, all I have left is this school and my work and no one here respects me. I'm a joke, an old man to spread rumors about. So now, will you please just get out and leave me alone? I have papers to grade." He tilted his head so that he was staring at a stack of papers on his desk, but he didn't move. Dexter assigned as much work as he did so he would have something to fill his time with, that much was clear. At the end of the day, he really did have almost nothing other than school, work, and maybe Alan and Reed, but they were a couple now and probably often forgot about him. He was alone, and didn't want to face his broken heart, not before he even had time to mourn what should've been a long and fruitful relationship.

Vinny hesitated a moment. He didn't think he was actually right. No, he did, he just didn't think Mr. Olsen would admit it. Before he could revel in any self-satisfaction, however, he was presented with the teacher's entire backstory. It was sudden and strange for him to just tell him something so important, but he couldn't leave him. Besides, he could now understand the teacher's rage. All this time he was hurting, in pain from losing the people he loved, and he coped with it by lashing out at the world. It was a sad story to hear, but Vinny couldn't help but let out a tiny chuckle. This reminded him of a certain person he worked with.
When told to leave, the guitarist instead stayed where he was. His angry expression was gone and replaced with gentleness and compassion, but no pity. He knew well that pity would only make him feel worse. "You really think no one respects you?" he asked softly, a tint of a smile almost visible on his face. "Mr. Olsen, if no one respected you then they wouldn't do what you tell them to do. We hate your crazy assignments, and sure a good chunk of us are afraid of you, but we don't make fun of you." With his piece said, he began walking towards the doorway, stopping to pick up his backpack. He paused, as if thinking about something, and glanced up at the ceiling thoughtfully. "Maybe you should do what people that are out of relationships do? Go on a date here or there, just let loose. It's not like you'll be looking for love, just rebounds. Just don't let it eat away at you until you're a completely different person." The look in his eyes told that his advice came from personal experience. Smiling lightly at Mr. Olsen, he slung his backpack over one shoulder and walked out of the classroom. He had an essay to write.

As Vinny came walking out of class, looking as cool as ever. Violet was standing against a wall waiting for him to get out. Instead of trying to look at her butt or anything, the ginger just wanted to introduced herself to her classmate. "Hey Vinny," she called trying to get his attention.

"Hey, pay attention!"

Dexter prepared to be tormented or, worse, blackmailed by the student, only to find a gentle tone and a smile offered to him. He listened in silence, genuinely taking in what the young man was saying. As he moved to leave, Dexter stood out of his chair and willed his long legs to carry him quickly to the guitarist. He reached out and grabbed Vinny's wrist in an attempt to stop him, his grip weak enough for the young blonde to break away if he wanted to. "You don't have to do the essay," he said, cheeks turning a little pink as he looked away, his free hand moving to rub the back of his neck. "I mean, unless you want to. I wasn't going to grade it anyway. Honestly, I rarely ever grade the essays. It's way too much reading and I don't care enough to finish most of them." He dropped Vinny's hand and shoved his hand into his pocket, turning to walk back into the classroom. "I've got a lot to do before I go out for lunch. Just... stay out of trouble, brat." He nodded a little at the girl, then scratched his cheek as he moved back to his desk.

Feeling something grab his wrist, the guitarist turned to see the teacher telling him the truth about the essay. For a second a twinge of irritation caused his eyebrow to twitch. So every single one of those essays were bluffs? He should've known. But Vinny was too distracted by the drastic personality change. Mr. Olsen was nicer, even a little shy. It was as if he was almost a human being!
At the last comment, Vinny chuckled again and let his now free arm fall to his side. "Maybe you should cut down on all those essay assignments. If someone else finds out that you're bluffing you'll be dealing with a mutiny." he joked, though he wasn't entirely sure if that wouldn't happen. He turned to face the doorway, then paused and looked back at the teacher. "Look, I've had friends that've gone through tough times like this before, so... If you ever need to vent or just talk to someone, I don't mind. I don't really hang out with a lot of people here, anyway." he said. Giving Mr. Olsen a half-smile, he turned and stepped out of the classroom.
He had taken at least three steps outside of the classroom when he heard another voice say his name. He lifted his gaze from the floor to see the girl from earlier, the one that was new to the school. "Oh, hi." he said with a half nod. Why was she still lingering here? "Uh, did you need to talk to Mr. Olsen or...?" he drifted off, not knowing why else she could be here still.

"I'm actually wanted to talk to you but in the non weird fan girl way. Since I just transferred here from out of state, I don't know anyone here and I thought we could be friends or something since you a music major here too!" Violet explained holding her gutair case in both hands. "And you seem to need help in chemistry, which is like the back of my hand!"

"Oh. Heh, thanks." Vinny said with a light smile. That's right, she played guitar, didn't she. He looked down at the guitar case in her hands, wondering what model it could be and what type of music she played. He personally liked practicing classical guitar, but that was more of a hobby now that his job required electric guitar solos here and there.
When brought up the subject of chemistry, a bead of sweat rolled down the musician's head as he ran his fingers through his hair. He definitely didn't need to be reminded of that. "I didn't grow up learning much about science." he admitted then glanced down at her. "I noticed you wrote it all down pretty quickly. Do you like science?"

"Hey, pay attention!"

He sat at his desk, staring at a piece of paper, but not retaining any of the writing. He knew distantly that the first question was wrong, but he couldn't really understand why. At least, not right now. His mind was somewhere else completely. For the first time Akito, Dexter was finding himself able to talk to someone about the crap he was dealing with, the endless stream of terrible decisions coming back to haunt him as he stared at those words that he cared nothing about. He didn't even like Chemistry in high school, why the hell was he teaching it?
Dexter pushed his hair back, setting the paper down and writing a B on the top in red marker. He didn't care enough to properly grade it, then stood out of his seat and walked over to the door. Well, almost. He stopped himself, thinking about just what he was about to do. He couldn't confide in a student about his problems! That wasn't right. But he did need someone to vent to, at least a little bit, and besides, Leavitt offered. He clenched his fists in determination, then walked back out. "Mr. Leavitt," he called, seeing two students outside his room. He cleared his throat, clasping his hands behind his back and trying to put on a mature tone. "Uh, I'd like to see you during lunch, if you don't mind. Just meet me here during your lunch period, alright?" He crossed his arms, looking over to Alan's door. He never had to deal with this kind of stuff, did he? No, he just had Reed and his dumb instruments to deal with all day. Then again, Reed was basically a big child, so maybe he had it worse.

"Grew up in a very small town, dad is one of the only surgeon in town, and his youngest child. So conclusion is I always had to go to a doctor office and stare at the periodic table among other things until it got burn into my memory. but I don't like science that much." Violet explained in a joking manner. "I personally love music. My dad that is my mother in me but I can't believe that because I never met her"

Vinny scrunched his eyebrows up in confusion. "Why would a surgeon have a periodic table?" he asked. The surgeons he knew would have posters about random medical problems, usually ones they dealt with the most. Then again, he didn't grow up with a doctor family, so he couldn't say what was right or not.
When he heard about how the girl never met her mother, a sympathetic look shined in the guitarist's eyes. "Heh, I know that feeling." he mumbled more to himself than to her.
Hearing another voice, he looked over to see Mr. Olsen awkwardly standing at the doorway. Well, he guessed it made sense since they were here for a good few minutes. To Vinny's surprise, however, the teacher was there to invite him to lunch instead of yell at them. Was he taking him up on his offer? "Oh, sure." he agreed. He glanced at the girl for a second then back at Mr. Olsen. "Actually, I've got a free period right now if you want to go now?"

"Hey, pay attention!"

Dexter looked between the two students, then shook his head and backed up a step. "No, you two look like you're busy. I'd hate to pull you away from your friend." He shrugged, tucking a hand into his back pocket, the light hitting him at an angle that almost made him look handsome. "I'm sure you'd rather spend your time talking to someone less likely to assign you detention, anyway." He laughed a little, then coughed a little and looked up as he heard the psychology teacher leaving his classroom to go to lunch. Maybe he should take a page out of his book. Then again, he was probably going to eat with the sex-ed teacher. They were together, the last time he'd heard.

"Oh, it's no problem. I have this then lunch, so it's already lunchtime for me." Vinny assured. It was really weird, even unnerving, to see Mr. Olsen as a completely different person. Look, he even tried to make a joke! Poor guy was the only one that laughed. This was painfully awkward and the guitarist felt it was his duty to help fix that. Besides, all he was going to do was go home and watch a home decorating show, but he'd seen it already so there wasn't much for him to do right now.

"If you're positive," said the man unsurely. He nodded at the young woman once again. "If you'll excuse us then, Miss Young, I'm going to have to steal your friend here." Dexter then gestured for the guitarist to follow him into the classroom so he could gather his things. He started stacking up the papers, capping his red marker. "So I hear you're a guitarist," he started, trying to make a little small talk. "You any good?" He seemed a little more at ease in the classroom, with his back to the teen.

As Mr. Olsen moved back to his room, Vinny turned back to face the girl. He moved his backpack forward and opened a pouch to pull out a pen, then reached out to grab her hand and write numbers on it. "Sorry for cutting it short all of a sudden, but here's my number if you ever want to talk or hang out." he said as he finished writing his number. Capping the pen and returning it to his backpack, he smiled lightly at her. "I never caught your name, so just tell me that you were the one who talked to me after class and I'll remember. See you later." With a half-wave he departed to the classroom.
Not really knowing what to do now, Vinny went to his desk and set his backpack on top of it to relieve the weight. It was at that time that he heard the teacher's comment and glanced over at him. "Kinda." he said modestly. "I'm in a band and it does pretty well. Do you play any instruments?"
